    I wonder if it should be treated like stacked leather? The hidden tang is relying entirely on the resin. For permanency I think it would work best with a tang-through and a pommel?

    • @S8tan7
      @S8tan7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      As he said the resin soaked all the way into the cork, I imagine it wouldn't have any trouble with de-laminating as it would likely act more like a solid resin block, sorta like micarta or G10

    • @LewisSkeeter
      @LewisSkeeter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it would be stronger with a tang going all the way through.

    I have some squares of very dark brown cork that are much thicker that I have been thinking of using in this manner. I thought I might stack it with leather in between.

    Very nicely done . Even though you used the finished blank on a knife , l have several other tools in mind. I inherited many old tools from my dad , and am thinking that matching handles on all the files would look good . Dovetail saws will also benefit . Thanks for stimulating some ideas . Stay healthy.

    That's an interesting looking block of material. What would look even more interesting is if you cut the stacks at an angle and have 2 halves (scales?) before making it into the knife handle you could then get chevron stripes for example on the handle instead of just plain strips either running along or at 90 degrees to the blade.

  • @bigghoss762
    @bigghoss762 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That looks great. What might be cooler is if you do it so that instead of being perpendicular to the knife tang the layers are at a slight angle to the tang of the knife.

    Does the cork retain it's texture and sponginess after being coated in the resin? I really like the look with the blue, and if the texture remains the same, I would imagine that the handle would be very comfortable in the hand. Great job!!!

    • @stormkhan4250
      @stormkhan4250 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt very much the cork would retain its 'sponginess'. The resin soaking and gluing it all together would be rigid and would make the entire handle feel solid also.

  • @icerazar713
    @icerazar713 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work. Does the and resin work as well for full tang knives as it does for hidden tang. Must say the cork handle gives the blade a unique look. 👍

  • @Katzztar
    @Katzztar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always see cork used by stacking the small squares, never in the long strips(similar to micarta [sp?]). Is there a reason why? If there was contrasting material, like the stack in this with blue material/cork, in the long strips, would it make a interesting pattern when shaped?

    Listen, friend, it seems to me that there is not enough brass top on this knife, it will have a slightly oriental style and will look more assembled in general, you can even make a brass guard, but if to the end, then a curved-shaped wedge, sorry for my English, with love from Russia🇷🇺😉

    I will be honest to you so you may take my comments in consideration to enhance the result in the future ... you did a good effort on making the handle material. . Although I didn't like the choice. I know it was more of a test ... also I didn't like the handle profile. .. since you made a successful attempt then try making micarta it's the same method but different materials but it's so much prettier and stronger 😉
