  • How to Easily make Wood Chip Micarta Hybrid Knife handles or Scales. Micarta is typically made by saturating paper or material with resin and then compressing in a press until the resin dries. We have altered the process slightly creating a hybrid micarta. The results of this hybrid are perfect for knife makers looking to create unique knife scales. These wood chip micarta knife handles are easy to make and can be made with an assortment of different color backgrounds as well as different color wood chips. Check out this knife making how-to video to see just how easy it is to make your own wood chip micarta knife scales.

    Nice job. Good to know my shop isn’t the only messy one around. The laboratory shops some people have just make me smile. My favorite shops are the ones where people sweat or freeze depending on the weather. That shows the real desire for creativity.

    Very creativie work sir! Those turned out really nice. I am getting ready to try to make my own micarta and probably will just start with canvas material. I had forgotten that fiberglass resin turns yellow, so that was a good reminder for me. Thanks for sharing this video.

      DIYeasycrafts , awesome YT channel man ! I was wondering if you can help me with this problem. I´ve just make a denim micarta , i sanded it but i don´t know what to use for the finish . I tried using Watco Oil but turns my micarta really dark and dyed the white fibers of the denim into yellow . i want my micarta looks as natural as posible , what can i do ?

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have actually never made fabric micarta. Only time I have used fabric is on the wood chip micarta. That fabric was thin and absorbed the resin nicely. All I did was polish. I would think you may have to add an additional layer of resin after forming the handle. Just an idea. I would de grease with acetone then paint on thin layer of resin let it dry the lightly sand and polish. Will keep my fingers crossed

    Really love the results and how well you explained the process... But I have two tips that might help other DIY's make this Wood Carta...Tip One -- use cardboard instead of wood for first layer -- easy to remove during sanding step !
    Maybe sanding off all of backing would be a good idea
    Tip Two: Lose the Bar Clamps and Used A 30 LB. Dumbell To Weigh Down Jig Ram While Drying...:)

    I was thinking of this last night and can you technically make micarta anything?or does it have to be fabric to be micarta. Can I make a lego micarta handle or a bunch of coins? Idk I feel like that would just be a resin handle? Either way ima try one with some camo paracord so I can have a nice camo look hopefully

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Micarta has to be pressed. So it can be made from almost any material, paper or cloth. The wood chips I used were laid on top of cloth and pressed so I got away with calling it micarta. Otherwise you can creat some awesome looking scales but they would just be called cast scales
