Stanley Kubrick's staging of the moon landing! Although, rumour has it that, because he was such a perfectionist, he demanded that the whole thing be filmed on location...
😂 Yeah right in the airplane hangar. My grandfather worked on the set. He obviously signed an NDA but told us right before he died. He couldn't believe that although there were a lot of mistakes and things they forgot to take into account, everyone still believed it. Buzz literally tells people it was faked and they think he's kidding 😂. My grandfather always said that sometimes the truth is the greatest lie.
All of your videos are so well researched and put together. I love the clips you pull from movies and TV to put between the informational clips. I look forward to seeing more of your work!!
I would love to go back in time, and convince James Cameron to keep the Titanic set. No, not because of the movie, but because its a near exact replica of the actual ship. Think of the historical value a reconstruction like that would have! It could have easily been made into a museum and make something that we only see in pictures so much more. It's a shame that it was torn down after production, in my oppinion.
Yes!! Cameron's work on the Titanic is truly incredible. The man himself went diving to see the wreckage dozens of times. (In fact, he only made the movie so he could do the dive.) Him and the crew were dedicated to getting the depiction in the film as accurate as they could. I can not fathom how they could just break it down. I understand that it was huge but!! The work, dedication, and passion that went into such an incredible historical recreation should have been preserved.
apparently the grand staircase broke apart during filming, which is used as a reference for what probably happened to the real titanic's staircase. it probably would have been too broken inside from the filming process :(
the second best thing is that there's an ongoing project to create a virtual Titanic, complete with all the interiors. It's been going for several years and it's difficult to say when they'll be done, or how complete it will ultimately be
After watching the maintenance stuff on park rides, I can only imagine the cost of up keeping a replica shit. Probably cheaper to actually build a real titanic. Nobody under 80 years old would give a fuck tho.
After the scene was shot of the train wreck in The Fugitive, it was recreated as a miniature and shot again on a soundstage using a technology called Introvision. Harrison Ford jumping out was on a stage. My old neighbor owned the special effects film studio that produced the special effects for the film. I was at the studio and saw some of the film used and for other projects firsthand. Really cool technology.
The town of Sweethaven on Malta is actually nicer now than it was in the movie. I know Malta isn't as popular as other islands in the Mediterranean but if you ever get the chance to see it you will never forget it.
I recently had the pleasure of spending a week in MALTA but regrettably didn't find the time to visit the set, maybe next time (of which there definitely be).
They even do a wedding for Popeye and Olive Oil for the tourists! Sounds like they really have fun hamming it up and making that place alive with kooky characters.
I grew up in Santa Clarita, California just north of LA. My friends and I would hike in the hills and would come across old movie sets all the time. Your channel is bringing back so many memories I had almost forgotten about. Like that barn and UFO ship from the movie "Critters". This was before the internet and 911... both the number and the event in New York. So nobody cared if two kids were on there propriety just fucking around. Amazing time to live. The cliff in Spielberg's movie "Duel" and "War of the Worlds". I remember coming back from breakfast one morning... and million militarily jeeps were driving the other way(?). My friend and I were like 14 hiking when we saw about twelve General Lees' six Boss Hog Car's and dozens or so new and crashed "Hazard County" Police cars. It's blew our little minds. Everything from WW2 sets to castles and game show sets. These days you can't get close to anything. But I did just see a making for an Eminem video in the hills here where you can still hike (Lighters?). Town gets bigger while freedoms get smaller. Looking forward to more! I really do just love your stuff!!!!!
This is one of my favorite channels. Keep it up! Just please don't get sucked into trying to pump out videos too fast to meet expectations. Viewers can always wait for this level of quality
I just saw this today. We watched parts of The Fugitive as it was filmed in Bryson City, Dillsboro, etc in NC. The bus is in Dillsboro. We have keys to one of the buses and some scripts to the movie. Was fun watching it be filmed. Thank you for posting this. 😀
This is great - thanks for showing what happened to Orca 2 - in 1991 was surprised to see it across the channel in Menemsha, Marthas Vineyard (we only took pictures on it). The local Deli still had a sandwich called the “Richard Dreyfus” - turkey with light Dijon on Rye. Small detail - the 1977 Star Wars was not called “A New Hope” which was added in re-release.
While I was making my "Lost Film memorabilia/props" video, I came across this in a documentary...I was fascinated by not just the story of the 2 Orca's, but how little it had been covered. One day I'd love to visit Marthas Vineyard myself :) I am aware that Star Wars was not originally titled "A New Hope", but it was a lesser of two evils of getting comments of, "Ummm....it's called a new hope?!" :)
Yesterworld Entertainment - For the longest time the remains of the fallen locomotive from the climactic burning bridge scene in Buster Keaton's "The General" were still in that valley in Oregon. It was just sitting there since 1926 but when WW2 broke out, they broke it up and scrapped the much needed metal
You may be interested to know that David West Reynolds, the archaeologist who searched for and found the original Star Wars set in Tunisia, is currently producing a documentary entitled JOURNEY TO TATAOUINE, due to be released in December 2017. Dr. Reynolds did much more than discover the old movie set; he wrote several best-selling Star Wars books while working for George Lucas at the Skywalker Ranch. The detailed documentary will no doubt be exciting and of great interest to every Star Wars fan!
What a great, well put together video. I think I have just found one of my new favourite TH-cam channels, amazed I've not found it before. :) The Star Wars entry is particularly surreal - archaeologists effectively digging for a village (or whatever) built and lost just forty years ago.
Chase Osborn it didn't actually belong to him it belonged to universal studios but still it's absolutely unforgivable they could have restored it instead of destroying it
That was a major stupid decision.. There are so many other things they could have done, put it in storage, restored it, sold it as a prop... To go straight to cut it up for timber was really dumb... Maybe you let them off the hook if it was on the side of the road or on someone's property... But it was on Universal Studio's property for God sakes... (you know the place that makes famous movies)......While yes it was Universal and not Spielberg that owned it... (word was he would have lunch and visit the boat every so often) you might want to just ask the guy who made Jaws, (one of the biggest grossing movies of all time) should we chop up the Orca or not? Just saying!
Another astonishing video, my friend. These are so thorough , so detailed, each one is like a professional documentary. Excellent work. Oh and it would be fascinating to see any set from the Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka's factory (or his boat), or Alex's or the author's apartment from Clockwork Orange.
Just wanted to quickly address some afterthoughts: 1. In regard to the Orca, while there is another side to the story about Universal attempting to repair the vessel (causing it to break in half), I was unable to find definitive proof of this. So I decided to let Spielberg speak for himself, as he also recounts the same story in a later interview not shown in the video, and again neglects any mention of an attempted repair. 2. While in hindsight it would have fit perfectly here, I covered the destroyed/abandoned Ten Commandments set/sphynx props in a previous video, which can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/B2iKXkWUTRM/w-d-xo.html 3. Yes, I misspelled "The Fugitive" rather embarrassingly.
I was in Florida on my way home from a trip I stopped at a place called the Palms Motel there was a marina right next door to the place. There was an Orca in the Marina painted just like the boat but neater and the craft may have been a bit longer but it looked like the real thing to me tall mast and all. I could see it off my balcony from my room I should have taken a pic but I was too sun baked and tired from driving all night long
I thought that Moses originally brought down three stone tablets from Mount Sinai containing the 15 Commandments. He dropped one tablet and so we were reduced to having only 10 major laws to live by.
Yesterworld Entertainment There is an abandoned movie set here in Alabama in Wetumpka it’s from one of Tim Burtons movies I can’t remember the name of it but it’s pretty awesome
Definitely my favourite youtube channel! Keep it up with these videos, they're so well researched and neatly made, and always super entertaining to watch :) definitely deserve lots more subscribers!
I was maybe 4 or 5 in the late 80's when I first saw that movie and it, along with the old Mork and Mindy reruns they used to show on Nick at Night around the same time, was my introduction to Robin Williams and I've been a fan ever since. I still have kind of a hard time watching his movies now.
I remember as a kid going to visit that Popeye set, sadly it was closed for a private event. Still got a good view, and my parents took us to a smallish water park instead. Unfortunately it was closed too. Not going so well. But the guy running the park decided to just open it up for us and let us have free rein. I don't know why he was so kind to this day, but from a grown woman who's never forgotten having their own private water park for a day, thank you to him and thank you to the Popeye set for being closed. (Also thank you to the old capital's torture museum for making my sister cry and run off. Best holiday ever.)
The special edition Orca is probably the best thing that could have happened to the boat. I assumed it was going to be thrown away, but at least that way there would be no hard feelings and something similar to what happened to the original Orca. I can’t believe that they would have destroyed the Orca :(
Dances With wolves scenes, are fairly well documented, and to the best of my knowledge, it is possible to follow a movie set location tour ranging over a couple of States in I think North and South Dakota. I am not able to travel due to a critical injury leaving me paralyzed, I would love to see these locations again.
I have high hopes that today's modern robotics (like the Spot robot dog) would enable someone like yourself to visit locations like that! While it seems a little steampunky, one of those self correcting robot walkers could be repurposed as a kind of walking chair you could sit in to see these locations in person and have a lot more freedom of navigation then a standard wheelchair could provide! here's hoping they actually think of it and put some thought into it!
These videos are such treasure to me! And if i could, even without the Orca II being there i'd love to see the area of Martha's Vinyard where Jaws was filmed! And seeing any location of any of the Star Wars films would put me over the moon!
The valuable set I'd reconstruct would be the town/city set that stood on the famous RKO backlot in Culver City, California. It was used in 'Gone With The Wind' in 1939 and on television in 'The Andy Griffith Show' in the 1960s. And in TAGS, just beyond a fake wall, stood the GWTW train station and Tara, both of which I would rebuild.
William French The RKO backlot was also the home of the Stalag 13 set from Hogans Heroes, and Camp Henderson from Gomer Pyle USMC. Several Star Trek episodes were filmed there as well.
I was in Matmata in 2002. Visited the original set of Luke and his family. Slept in the Star Wars hotel..... as a first hour fan it was a dream come true.
Ive been to the Star Wars Set in the Tunisian dessert during my holiday there. its a two- day- trip and really worth it. Amazing how these sets are constructed and managed to say somewhat intact after all those years. The remote dessert location makes it seem very authentic.
Nickolas Gagama we lived in Bryson City for 21 years and watched Fugitive being filmed. We have scripts from the movie.my husband watched the train wreck being filmed. (This is Sally, not Brian)
Interestingly, isn't the filming of The Fugitive why Ford had the beard during his cameo in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles episode, "Mystery of the Blues" ?
A movie set I would like to visit if I could? Hmm, definitely something from the movie Labyrinth (1986), as seeing a place where David Bowie once stood and acted would make my little nerd heart happy. xD
In doing research for this, there were a lot of film locations that aren't "lost" but also aren't really "known". It's a grey area I'd be curious to explore in the future.
I was just in Inner Course Pa last week and took photos and video at 10 Queens Rd. That's were Harrison Ford beat the shit out of a guy making fun of the Amish in Witness. Also the store where he used the payphone is just down the street from there as well. The phone booth is still there. Although sadley the store has closed down.
The outdoor ampetheater set at Universal for Jessus Christ Superstar was spectacular and I would like to see it again. Also the Deathstar trench set would be cool to walk along. Lastly, the Well of Souls set from Raiders would be neat to stand in.
Your story about the Orca leaves out an important point. They originally wanted to restore the rotting boat, but when they put a harness around the boat to lift it up with a crane it broke into pieces. THEN they decided to chop it up for timber.
From my research, there are two sides to the story, and this is the 2nd side. I was initially going to go into both, but decided to let Spielberg himself tell the story as appears in the documentary (only edited out dead air and some stutters, but the information remains intact). He also recounts the same story in a later interview, never mentioning anything about the supposed attempt to restore the boat.
8:15 any person over 47(today is October 4 2019), knows the voice of the great William "Cannon" Conrad! WWII fighter pilot, great actor, and his voice can be found on Rocky and Bullwinkle, as well as the intro of Buck Rogers In The 25th Century (79ish-81ish I believe).
I'm 34yo but I knew that voice. After a quick look on *Google* I'm pretty sure the I know the voice best from *Police Squad* (1982), however I also watched *Buck Rogers in the 25th Century* (1979-1981), *Murder, She Wrote* (1984-1996), *The Lone Ranger* (1980-1982), and *Hudson Hawk* (1991). I also watched *The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends* (1959-1964), and have probably seen other stuff he's been in, but if I have, I watched them nowhere near as much as the above shows. Plus my dad loves watching old stuff especially *Westerns* (even when I know he's seen a show or film before, and tell him, he himself won't remember, even when it's just a few weeks or months later, so he watches the same stuff repeatedly), so it's possible I know his voice from the *Westerns* my dad's watched too.
They don't exist anymore, sadly, but I'd love to visit the sets used for filming The Andy Griffith show! Not only because they're so iconic from the show itself, but they were also used in OTHER shows, like Star Trek! There's literally an actual scene which features the crew of the original Enterprise walking past Floyd's!
I’ve actually climbed on both the train and bus from the Fugitive back when I went to college in the area. It was a favorite area to sneak into back then.
Damn Jawas stealing movie set doors for their houses... Not gonna lie though I would love to have that for my house, walk in using a door from a movie no one would thought would get so far as it has now.
I have been to two really nostalgic film locations. From Wargames the numerous display screens where you see Joshua learn that there is no winner in Global Thermal Nuclear War on March AFB in Southern California. The other was from the 1969 True Grit shooting locations in Ridgeway, CO that simulated Fort Smith, AR and the Ross Ranch.
There's also the abandoned set from Pirates of the Caribbean in the Bahamas. I don't remember what movies it was from (maybe Curse of the Black Pearl?), and I think it was destroyed by a hurricane (when our group went to visit it last March of this year). We could still see old pier supports, an old storage building, and shambles of an old tiki bar-ish place where they used to gather all the actors/actresses. It was pretty cool!
Stanley Kubrick's staging of the moon landing! Although, rumour has it that, because he was such a perfectionist, he demanded that the whole thing be filmed on location...

I meant to say the train is in Dillsboro, maybe the bus also. The bus used to be in Bryson City but was foolishly taken away.

Larry Lee Moniz no. It is Tataouine. A village in Tunesia that gave Luke’s homeplanet it’s name....
I love your videos, they always cut out all the unnecessary stuff and gets right to the core of the video!
I would love to rebuild the Visitor Center from Jurassic Park!

I don't blame Spielberg. I would have gone nuts too if I heard something valuable of mine got destroyed for the dumbest reason.

I would like to go see the set built for the Ten Comandments with Charlton Heston.
awesome video as always! I have seen the fugitive site in person and it's pretty darned cool..gotta love practical effects!
Good video, thank you. I'd love to spend some time on the sets of 1950s Hill Valley from Back to the Future!

It always makes me depressed to hear about the two Orcas.

I'd love to visit the Bates Motel in its original form!
Isn't it still on the Universal back lot with the house? Would be cool to go see.
it was dismantled at the end of the TV series...
That sucks. Little room for nostalgia in Hollywood I guess.
The Bates Motel used in the tv series was a reconstruction in Canada. I think the original set in Hollywood still exists as part of the tour.
That's good, thanks for clearing this up.
Ive been to the Star Wars Set in the Tunisian dessert during my holiday there. its a two- day- trip and really worth it. Amazing how these sets are constructed and managed to say somewhat intact after all those years. The remote dessert location makes it seem very authentic.
The set that I wish I could see would be the town in Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter.
This is an excellent post. Very interesting and informative. Well done.
These videos are so interesting, and I love them!
Thank you!!
your channel is really fun to watch my guy, keep up the good work 👌
I live 15 minutes from the Fugitive train wreck.
Nickolas Gagama You are lucky I live 4788 minutes away!
Anthony Sullivan it's just out of Sylva NC, 28779
An hour for me. First time I saw it was on the Dillsboro to Bryson City train ride.
S Tho + Me too. Ever take the Nantayhala Gourge trip? Great scenery.
Nickolas Gagama we lived in Bryson City for 21 years and watched Fugitive being filmed. We have scripts from the movie.my husband watched the train wreck being filmed. (This is Sally, not Brian)
Great video! I hope we can get another episode for the podcast soon!
It's nice to see that Darth Vader got over his hatred of sand
Im addicted to these videos now hope you have more
Only the two videos?
These videos are amazing
I was white water rafting in NC and saw the left over train scene from the fugitive! It was so cool!
Bat Cave. Any one of them, but Adam West's is my favorite.
This was cool and interesting.
GREAT video.
Good job, guys.
Do alien encounter from disneys
It may...or may not...be the next theme park video...but you didn't hear it from me...
+Yesterworld Entertainment can you do TOT
It does interest me, I just wish I could have the opportunity to experience/film the park itself before making a video about it.
Anthony Sullivan because maybe he realizes that yesterworld can do it much better.. He's basically the best in his business!
Wewe
another great video!! keep up the great work!
Interestingly, isn't the filming of The Fugitive why Ford had the beard during his cameo in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles episode, "Mystery of the Blues" ?
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thank you
i would like to visit the film location of Avatar, but then again, it would take 7 years to get there and i'm not really in the mood.
Did you get there yet?
I've seen the Fugitive train wreck. It's so awesome in real life. You get to see how large a job that scene was to shoot.
I would love to recreate the entire MASH 4077 set.
The Tunisian sets are so cool from Star Wars--I'd so love to visit them!
A movie set I would like to visit if I could? Hmm, definitely something from the movie Labyrinth (1986), as seeing a place where David Bowie once stood and acted would make my little nerd heart happy. xD
I would love that as well
what about ohhh i don't know...MARK FREAKING HAMIL
I would love that too
I loved the Helping Hands, and the Door Knocker oafs.
Bog of Stench. Its one o f my all time faves
That Frank Oz excellence.
RIP Bowie.
Dance Magic Dance
Keep up the videos! Love all of them so far!
The Popeyes village on Malta is a tourist destination. Interesting to see.
David Reece Its probably more popular now after Robin Williams passing
David Reece interesting since the movie tanked so badly, but nice to see a set truly 'recycled'!
Finally a channel that is a top _______ that's not click bating!
query? its quARRY
Ant T that’s how it’s spelled
They certainly pick some uneducated narrators
He does a good job mispronouncing Tunisia as well
People pronounce things differently
Query? It's quarry. Those in glass houses...
You're videos are really satisfying I love them!
can you do something that involves the Jurassic Park series?
One of my favorite films, note taken :)
Yesterworld Entertainment and also, I'd like to find the original sight of the Visitor Center. Maybe that can be in the next one
In doing research for this, there were a lot of film locations that aren't "lost" but also aren't really "known". It's a grey area I'd be curious to explore in the future.
Yesterworld Entertainment can't wait to see this in the future!
The JurassicMan Jurassic world was shot in New Orleans closed six flags
Nicely cut together..thank you ! :)
I would like to visit the Cleopatra set from Elizabeth Taylor and Burton, out in the desert. A few years back many many Egyptian items were found.
I love your vids!keep up the good work!
Thank you ever so much!
I wonder if since George Lucas has nothing to do now, if he could help with that fan-run project to preserve the tatooine sets.
Your videos are so well done!
Thank you!
The set of the Alamo is rotting away in Texas.
It burned down seven years ago.
There's no basement in the Alamo!
J W large marge sent me
@@JW...-oj5iw 😍😍😍 I see what you did there lol
@@twalling This one still exists en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alamo_Village
Fascinating video. Thanks for sharing.
I live in NC, most movies taking place in a pine tree forest seem to come from here. I get to see so many sets!
I'd like to visit Dixie Square Mall (the mall used in the Blues Brothers) before it closed.
Time has long passed on that one. Some might even consider it symbolic that they built a police station on part of the former mall's property.
Disco pants and haircuts. . .New Oldsmobiles are in early this year!
Keep up the good work, your videos are awesome
Disney buried Star Wars far deeper than any stinkin' desert.
I love Disney but they should never have had anything to do with star wars
I have been to two really nostalgic film locations. From Wargames the numerous display screens where you see Joshua learn that there is no winner in Global Thermal Nuclear War on March AFB in Southern California. The other was from the 1969 True Grit shooting locations in Ridgeway, CO that simulated Fort Smith, AR and the Ross Ranch.
The mansion in the 1980's movie Clue.
Bravo! Well done! Thanks for the video.
5:14 an empty what?? I think you meant to say quarry.
I was wondering what a querry was!
I was also wondering why the narrator couldn't pronounce 'quarry' ??
Excellent video!!
How cool to see Sarah Jessica Parker being interviewed as a young foal.
The Wizard of Oz
Yes, take me to OZ!
Spielberg was spot on. Wonder what that interview was about that the subject of the Orca came up.
