    As a detailer of 20+ years, nothing says "sleazy used car lot cheapo paint job" than over spray in the wheel wells, exhaust, and other under carriage components. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Do yourself a favor and black all that out with a rattlecan.

      Tip for doing screen protectors. If you get a piece of dust stuck under it, pull the corner up and use a piece of scotch tape to get the dust out. If you use your finger or a cloth, it just makes it worse.

    The fingers are because the window is a slight compound curve. The tint must be shrunk first on the outside of the window with a heat gun and the clear backer installed facing you. You spray heat and squeegee untill it sticks to the window with no fingers. The quality of the tint is probably crappy but there are so, so many tricks to doing it and everything needs to be perfectly clean. Always worth trying yourself :)

    I've got the same tint on my truck. It actually looks great. You have to spray the soap on both sides and everything will squeegee out. You won't have fingers, bubbles anything. And the instructions tell you to pull the "extra" tint outside of the window cutout first. If you don't it will rip the tint.

    I put some cheap pre cut tint on my jag 4 years ago. Still looks perfect now and the car is kept outside. Just have to make sure to install it well

  • @czamman
    @czamman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Before installing put the tint on the outside of the glass and heat it up.. let the tint contour from the outside. Next, put masking tape on the fuzzy bottom molding inside. When installing the tint, get the glass drenched. With the window an inch down, slide the bottom in first make sure it's really wet. After getting the tiny behind the bottom molding then move it up carefully into the corner and top. The key is drenching it. Dish soap might work better, just a couple of drops. Keep drenching it while you squeegee. Let it dry 24 hours.

    Sam, the cheap 20$ ebay tint is actually pretty decent, i had good luck with it my second time around after learning from my mistakes.
    You can't tint outside. I found it is infinitely easier for a rookie like us to actually remove the window from the vehicle and tint it, then re install the window. A little more work but you will get a perfect result.

  • @bluelight456
    @bluelight456 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Having just recently done a black magic window tint on my old truck I can absolutely agree that the wind will be most peoples number 1 headache. I don't have a garage and the wind ruined my first attempt. But I pushed through and managed to do all the windows myself saving quite a bit of money. Trick to get the tint into the weather seal is to pull out from the center of the window and finesse the sides down then slide the center in. Shrinking the tint at the bottom can help with the fingers, but personally I baby sat mine and used a squeegee every time they started forming until it was mostly dry and that worked fine. The windows already had old tint on them and most shops will charge you extra if they have to remove it (only fair). But Sam if you remove the tint be sure to use your heat gun and/or a steamer. Steamer makes pretty quick work when removing tint.

    Applied coating in the sun and right after sprayed it with water. Correct me if I'm wrong, maybe it's different with ceramic coatings. You want the car to be cool to the touch and away from sunlight when applying anything to your car and you don't want to introduce it to any moisture for a few hours.

    • @RTM459
      @RTM459 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are 100% right. Old detail guys wouldn’t even wash my car and leave it in the sun. You would think “drip dry” the best. After further review, leave a wet car outside the dirt from the passing air just sticks to the car (because it’s wet) so you gotta dry you car (with the right rags) just to get a pro looking wash, any paint or clear coat application needs to be cool and dry. Other wise you are wasting your time.

    I did all my car windows with ebay precut tint and it came out really good, tint isn't easy to work with but with patience it's no problem. TIP keep a razor handy to trim anything that doesn't fit perfect. And also you need to clean your windows PERFECTLY before applying, the tiniest dust particle will show up as a little bump and bubble so keep everything clean.

    Just a thought on the tint, since it's JUST you with no helper: A large, plastic tote, with the water/soap solution, and do all the "unwrapping" in there, so it and your hands are wet in the whole process, including when you take it out and stick it to the glass. Kind of like the water-slide decals for a model car.
    Edit: P.S.: Silver for the calipers.

  • @eman0621

    From having my cars tinted in the past, I think it's way easier if you remove the door panels so you can get right in and cover the bottom of the widow(s). Plus you can adjust it easier with the soapy water. You need to clean the windows first with a squeegee and a dust free environment. Let the pro's do it, honestly. All the hack DIY tint jobs I've seen, lots of bubbles. Car looks pretty good. Keep it up.

  • @Im1CrazyCow
    @Im1CrazyCow 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Sam a few things on tint, first off if you really want to do it your self just go buy it from one of the Autoparts stores, it comes in depths of tint.. or percentage of tint .its what they check when they pull you over to see if its too dark ..Anyway I have done my Car , Truck which has been on your property before when I delivered HAY to your Dad ....But as I was getting to i did it on my old house too but that I bought at Home Depot ( its different tint than at Auto parts store ) BUT you still use the same method to install it......stop using them Bondo spreaders and get your self a good 6 -8 inch RUBBER Squeegee and a 10-12 inch one of you plan top do your house....The Squeegee will have a Metal Base on it that can be taken apart to replace the Rubber if need be or shift it for weird corners. OK to install it first off never try to line it up and Always CUT IT BIGGER you will trim it with a single edge razor blade or a break off blade style cutter. NEVER USE HEAT GUN!! to get it behind the window sweeper (felt) on the door panel you can do it 2 ways one (and this is why you cut it bigger) after you cut your piece and you get ready to remove the clear backing on the film you roll the window down about 3 inches and then you can either slip the film behind the sweeper by just wetting it and slipping it but i like to un pop the panel just on the top it makes it alot easier and then slip it down far enough to were it goes well below the window if you rolled it up all the way.
    Make sure as you are doing this you keep the top sprayed or wet against the window this allows you to move it in any direction easy.......OK here is where the magic comes in with the Squeegee start in the center and work your way to one side ONLY i normally do the hardest ..in your case that odd part at front dont worry if it is a big big and comes up ( really hard to explain this on here) anyway you do that and then you use tool to take the solution out at the bottom all the way to the end of window so now it looks like the front is done mostly and the end where it would the key in the door is,. turn your tool around and use it to remove all the solution all the way out to the top until the film is more or less looks like its been done by a pro ( this is HOW YOU GET NO FINGERS...the solution and lift and squeegee over and over till it sets right) at first it seems hard by the 3rd you will go at it like you been doing it for years.......ok the final and the part that makes it look like its been done by a shop........TRIMMING you want to cut the top first and this is IMPORTANT...CUT IT 1/8- 1/4 short all the way across the top following the top edge of window... THE REASON: when you roll it up its unseen because of window rubber.....now why you do it: so it wont roll back or get pinched off in un-stick cut the sides about 1/8 same way not as important you just need to make sure its even ....its very easy........ok here is why you left the bottom long and DID NOT DO THE DUMB CREDIT CARD SHIT......now take you single edge or break away cutter and roll window all way up for now pull back on bottom window sweeper/felt and CUT ABOUT 1/2 an inch below it and use squeegee to push it down flush to window........ now after thats been cut all the waay around your done ...ALMOST.......ONE step left is to ROLL DOWN any of the windows you had to Roll up so if 2 or 4 door roll them all down about 2 inches

    Should paint the area behind the grill black. Looks a bit cheap seeing the blue through it. I think the grill bezel itself should be a contrasting colour as well, maybe the same as the wheels.

    As a 25+ year window tinting veteran, this was painful to watch. Get it done professionally, because you'll end up paying $100 just to remove the old film before they retint it.

    With the window tint to get the fingers out place on the outside of glass and heat shrink to the curve of the glass. Plus you have to peel the extra tint off around to expose the actually pattern of the window then you wont rip the film and its best to tack the film to the glass so you can peel off what they call the release liner.

  • @kksquad69
    @kksquad69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Samcrac, the reason for the fingers is because the tint is flat and the window is curved. Take a heat gun and heat the fingers and the will start looking like a snake and you can flatten them out with your hard card. I usually do that on the outside before installing. If you ever need help I can walk you through the process and tricks such as how to carry the tint.

    You have to take the clear film off of the sheet first before you push out the cut section! It even says so in the instructions. That's why it ripped.

    Bought pre cut tint from Bay and installed it with no probs. Did my truck 5 years ago, car 3 years ago and other car 6 months ago. No fade or purple. Looks as good as the day it was installed. Believe me when I say it is your lack of skill that was the main prob. Using a sharp edged bondo spreader is a quick way for scratches and rips. Rubber squeegee and soft edged tucker would have helped.

    I prefer the silver brake callipers. I feel bright smurf blue is at really a colour that complements red but I think it’s going to be tough to revert the red callipers back to silver so might as well just go with it.

    Love your built. Just watched a couple of jaguar videos and I think it came out nicely. It's not the colour that I would recommend, but it doesn't look that bad at all. Their are some minor things that I would tackle if it was my car;
    1. Firstly, I would black out the wheel arches because of the overspay with some body wax that also protects rust (if they were metal).
    2. Chroom wrap or black out the trim pieces on the bumpers that are painted blue. Now it just looks odd.
    3. Black the rubber/plastic with some "back to black" compound and clean up the interior by detailing it.
    4. Fix all the overspay with Aceton/paint stripper. Be careful with it but overspay is a no go on a good paint job.
    Hopefully it's advice that can help you. Would love to here if you agree on those thoughts. Just became a sub..😄

      Meh maybe but you know that anything a pro can do is something that you can also potentially do yourself right? Especially if we are talking about simple handy-man jobs like this where intelligence/education is not needed, the only thing separating a car "pro" from the common man is experience, and anyone can get that if they are willing to give a few tries.

    • @Samcrac

      Definitely clay bar; this is a "new" paint job so there shouldn't be many surface contaminants why I didn't have to do it.

    From what I've watched,with fingers in your tint heat the glass on the outside for 3 seconds then squeegee the inside to get rid of fingers.repeat until fingers have gone.
    Do the same for air bubbles too!!👍
