I'm an instructor in Texas. It is perfectly legal to aim a gun at someone threatening you with a knife. It's also unwise not to. You did what you needed to survive and won. Congrats! Hope you called the police.

@Birdsofparadiselost Can you threaten deadly force even when you can't lawfully use it? Assume they are merely trespassing, and you don't reasonably believe them to be threatening something much worse.) On that, states disagree. The LaFave & Scott Criminal Law treatise tells us that "merely to threaten death or serious bodily harm, without any intention to carry out the threat, is not to use deadly force, so that one may be justified in pointing a gun at his attacker when he would not be justified pulling the trigger." Likewise, Black's Law Dictionary defines "nondeadly force" to include a "threat of deadly force, such as displaying a knife." (See this post on the Siwatu-Salama Ra case from Michigan.) That seems to be the majority view."
It goes on and says rarely it goes the other way but the example they give is a guy who got pushed 3 times. That means he had a reasonable way to deescalate. That's far from having a knife up in the air pointed at you and that's the example what we're talking about. I'll be honest your advice sucks imo. Why would you ever tell someone to consult a lawyer on if to point a gun at a person coming at you with a knife? The same person that chased your friend over. You do what obvious to protect yourself and deal with the courts later. In this example the courts heavily lean in your favor and there's camera's.

This is an awesome story man, and you told it well. It shows a handgun is a strong deterrent, and you don’t always need to pull the trigger for it to be effective, yet you had the ability to if it came down to it. It seems you handled it very well, especially for being only 18 at the time.

    • @citizenresponse
      @citizenresponse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Exactly. I want to get people away from the mindset of feeling like they always have to shoot. So many crimes are deterred by the mere presentation of the handgun, and we should strive to preserve human life as best we can. Thanks for watching!

So Glad you had the gun within easy reach! Weird guy could have taken your life like you said so easily! Back in the 60s, I was only 12, and my Uncle lived on a farm near Vernon, Texas, and he helped me learn to lead my shots. That was with a rifle. He was an excellent shot. I was one a 22, or a 410 shotgun chasing rabbits to eat for supper. Much later when I became 21 and had moved to California, I bought a Ruger Service-Six in 357. Awesome revolver! Also had to pull it out once against 2 gang members right in front of my house. They were in a car. I was in my yard not far away at all. No one was hurt, but 3 shots were fired straight up in the air from his gun. They left. We called the police and reported them. Nothing more came of it.

For an 18 year old man, you handled that situation perfectly! The main thing is to keep every one as calm as possible, you did it. Situational awareness, you was on it! When I was 18, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have performed as well as you did. I had a similar experience happen to me about 15 years ago. I hadn't started carrying then and all I had on me was a buck knife on my waist in a holster. I was pumping gas in my truck when a car pulled up on the other side of the island and asked me for directions. I knew something was wrong because his license plate had the same county as mine. His buddy came out of the passenger side telling me to give up my wallet.. My heart was racing my sight started to form a funnel and all I could see was him reaching in his waist to pull what I assumed was a gun. I pulled my bic lighter out of my coat pocket and pulled the nozzle out of my tank and I threatened them to die a terrible death over 20 bucks, I pointed the hose right at him with lighter in hand and he said you're a crazy mfer and ran for the car and they peeled out. I felt so full of adrenaline that when it was over I felt sick.

Bro god works in crazy way I was in a similar situation where I was at a function and people started arguing and I went outside to my car “instinctually” once at my car a guy came up and grabbed my shirt and put a gun in my face. He was standing between me and my drivers door with a pistol in my face holding me by my shirt. Once everything went down I was so lucky because I was in my car I had no duty to retreat in my state. Your body knows what to do faster than you are aware of what you did. Shit happens fast. that’s why I always park strategically and leave people alone!

"For some reason they just took off running"
They took off because they are cowardly trash who wanted to threaten a nice young couple with death and perhaps more than threaten, and they realized that it wasn't going to be anything near a one sided affair.
I admire you for your compassion and empathy. I like to think I have a measure of both as well. I can't say what I'd do in the situation, but my instinct is, once someone decides to put me in fear of my life or that of my loved ones, offswitch as soon as I can hit it. Not to punish, not to be punitive, not to be bloodthirsty, but because I am not going to risk innocent people trying to figure out what some guy is going to decide he wants to do. He created the situation, chips fall.
Your situation turned out as well as could have been hoped for, for everyone. Only way it could have been better is if you already had a full tank and kept rolling.

I left one door open, just before we closed and bam. 2 guys rush in with pistols and straight to my head it goes. I have carried almost everyday since I turned 21 and got my concealed. I’m 33 now. That is awesome that in Texas you can carry a pistol in your truck at 18, I’m sure your story isn’t the only one like it. I’m in Florida and we also have very pro self-defense legislation as well. It really helps when I’m doing late-night service calls at industrial complexes all across Florida, in the worst parts of cities, knowing I have the means to protect those around me. I couldn’t imagine living in place knowing only the lawless have access to firearms. Mind boggling.

Fantastic story and thank you very much for sharing! That situation could have deteriorated very quickly and it's a good thing that both you and your date had at least some sense of situational awareness and she sensed that something wasn't right and alerted you too that possibility. Having good situational awareness and as it's said, having your head on a swivel is so very important. Y'all are very lucky and I am so glad to hear that it turned out ok and this encounter definitely changed your attitude and attention to the investment of training and taking your self defense very serious.
Simple tasks like filling your truck with gas or sitting in a drive thru or carwash can be some of the most dangerous and opportune times for car-jacking or robbery to take place and most people are so wrapped up with their phone or their conversation at the time that they don't even see or sense the threat until it's too late. It's so very important to always always stay vigilant and aware of your immediate surroundings and take inventory of who and what are around you and look for escape routes and alternate ways of egress. The most important thing is if something doesn't feel right, just keep going, your gut is usually right. Stay armed, stay safe and thank you again for sharing! God bless!

Excellent presentation! It was not jumbled or rambling (in response to your ending disclaimer).
You are obviously a courageous and quick thinking young man. The fact that you were scared is what any person would be. Even experienced, seasoned combat veterans have that reaction.
You saved four (if I kept up) people's lives that day.
If you weren't armed, it could have easily gone differently.

Your parents must be awesome role models as proven by your ability to analyze, protect, reason, and belief in God. Unfortunately, being raised in Houston, I've been in similar situations so I am a strong advocate for my family to carry and have frequent training.

Good job, you won this critical incident and didn’t have to kill that bad guy that day. That’s called “WINNING.” But, just so you know…. If someone brandishes a knife at you in a threatening manner, you have the right to point your gun directly back at him. Don’t hide it.

My young brother, you handled that situation Very well for your age! Yes, I know the Lord protected you, but you showed great maturity!
Please clarify, was the "homeless" person who first approached you just a bystander, or was he connected with the attacker? Praise God you both were delivered from harm! Blsgs, gg

Glad you came out on top, and only a show of force was necessary! He brought a knife to a gun fight!
As far a "comments" from key board warriors on how THEY would've, should've, could've,....I say don't sweat it, you achieved the optimal outcome, no one was hurt or injured, on either team. That is a solid win to me!
If/when someone asks me "why do carry/ need a gun" , unless you have been under a rock in 2020, turn on ANY news source ..THAT is enough reason
Thank you for sharing, it takes guts to put yourself out there!
Please look down at your holster when you are re-holstering, I grit my teeth both times watching you do that! I don't know if your firearm is "hot" for this demonstration, but i refer to "rule #1"

Good job brother on handling your situation. We have such a bad homeless problem in our state. I never leave the house without my firearm. It is sad what this world has turned into with crazy people on drugs running around trying to rob people. The police in our city are very understaffed so too many people get away with bad crimes. I am always on the lookout when it comes to visiting the city to pick up groceries.

I am a left hand amputee. I live in Texas. Went through something similar. I have carried a Kimber Ultra Carry II 45 ACP for over 20 years. I feel comfortable carrying my pistol. It is good to train at the range.
Is never the same shooting at a target as having a confrontation with anyone.
