It really blows your mind. When this tin was first sealed, only packer was the last person to see the contents of the rations. people used typewriters, big chunky radios and Marilyn Monroe was still a teen. 70+ years later when the contents of the tin are finally reopen, It's a completely different world and thousands of people around the world are able to look at it once more from various interconnected glass screens. An amazing time capsule

Yea i love it when the packacking is also useful object on its own. Sure they wouldnt be boiling water on the raft, butnthis could bail water. And when/if they do make it to land the tin works as a pot and the lid could even be polished with sand and ash to make a signalling mirror.

And they were almost all produced, packed, shipped by domestic American companies! What an interesting world that must have been to navigate if you ever traveled internationally as a civilian. Like going to an alien planet, instead of seeing a McDonald's, Starbucks, AND a Dunkin Donuts on the same city block while in China or W. Europe

I remember my grandpa back in the 40s and 50s told me getting this ration pack from surplus on Halloween was today’s equivalent of king size candy bars. Everyone then had these from the war from surplus people bought them up. My grandfather said he got about 3-4 of these as a kid and it was the greatest thing ever. Was a tin full of candy.

Technically not mint I suppose but as close as is feasible. If that is the condition of the candy inside the best case scenario preservation then it will never get any better than that. You're basically playing semantics as it is impossible by nature of the candy to get mint condition at that age.

It's mainly to maintain morale. Survival at sea is mostly a question of keeping hydrated. Chewing gum and sucking on boiled sweets takes the edge off that urge to drink seawater. Today you can still find these sort of sweets in sea survival kits.

They didn't really make it shiny, the metal is just naturally shiny. Exposed to the elements for 70 years tarnishes it but the inside was sealed so it looks brand new like it did the day it was made.

    • @duanecoleman387
      @duanecoleman387 8 ปีที่แล้ว +47

They were burnished on the inside to be nice and clean to catch rainwater, signaling was a possibility too....the edge was sharp enough to cut fish and birds if they were caught.

I notice you comment on the "slightly smaller" pack of Charms. It may have been to fit into the can, but I think it more likely that it was they reduced the size to avoid raising the purchase price.
In 1966 I was issued my first British 42-hour ration pack. The leaflet with the menu and instructions was dated 18 years earlier
In the sweets was a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate, priced 6d ( Six old pennies, or 2 and 1/2 pence in Decimal Coinage.
6d was the price in the shops in the time the rat pack was produced, and 6d was still the price in the shops when I opened my first rat pack in 1966, but the first thing we noticed was that the 1948 bar was MASSIVE compared to the 1966 one. They must have been reducing it bit by bit over the years without anyone noticing!

It's really cool to see these rations on high quality video. Not only is it seeing a little piece of the past every time a tin gets opened but it's also incredibly interesting to see how different countries preserve their food with the technology they had at the time and seeing the different foods they gave their soldiers based on what purpose the ration had. How did you get into reviewing these rations?

Still can’t believe the last time this stuff saw light of day was the 1940’s, such a different world. I guess it’s a testament to the excellent packing and preservation of the time. Not so sure today’s packed food would survive as long!

It's amazing to think that when you break that seal, albeit if the seal maintained it's integrity, it's 1940's air you're releasing. It's also interesting to think that label and contents were last seen by the worker that put them in 70 years ago.
It saddens me when I think about the manufacturing power we used to be-in that we produced nearly everything inside the US. Now we produce nothing but political correctness.
(And yes, that shearing of the can with the key is still soothing...must be my ASMR trigger.)

The fact that we put candy in our rations showed the amount of resources we had. The reason why our country is in decline is the fact those jobs that used to employ people putting candy in rations used to mean something-now it's all done overseas.

well, considering the Germans didn't necessarily rely on prepackaged rations like the USA I can image it'll be tough to find some still intact, or not in the hands of a collector. Not saying cool ration items didn't exist cuz they did. They just had so much of a variety of what they got their hands on. They relied heavily on field kitchens, so it was decently often that they were served hot meals. But in the event they couldn't get to one, they were fairly well stocked in various rations given to them via the army, local, and commercial. In the case of an emergency, when they couldn't get to a kitchen or their food stores were low they would carry a Half Iron Ration which consisted of mainly one 250g tin of meat of varying flavors, and 250g of hard biscuits (Knackebrot/Wheat Crispbread, Keks/Biscuits, and Zweiback/Hardtack). There was also the Frontkämpfer ration that was given to soldiers on the front lines, used as a moral booster. A small box treasure trove of treats.
if you wanna know more I'd definitely suggest checking out Jim Pools book Rations of the German Wehrmacht. Fantastic read with beautiful pictures well documented.

The United States Army Air Corps became the United States Army Air Force in early 1941 several months before Pearl Harbour. However the Air Corps still legally existed as an Army branch until 1947 when The United States Air Force came into being. All WWII combat and training units were part of the USAAF. :)
