Regarding the energy tablets,I once talked to a man who had been a Lancaster flight engineer who told me that when they went into mission briefings there would be a table by the door that had big bowls containing (presumably) the same energy tablets in them and the crews were encouraged to help themselves to as many as they wanted to get them through the mission ahead, he also told me that many men became addicted to these and after the war when they could no longer get these tablets suffered terribly from the drug habit they had got from their war service.
Interesting. I’ve heard stories that soldiers that got addicted to heroin during Vietnam war came home and were able to quit relatively easily. Probably depends on the person.

My grandfather served in WW2 in the south Pacific. He never saw action, he was a Marine stationed on a Navy communications ship that relayed messages from the front back to the mainland. During the war he amassed a small collection of curios and memorabilia and after it was all over, EVERYTHING that was in his box of WW2 stuff and his old dress uniform perpetually smelled like motor oil or a diesel mechanic shop. No matter how much time went by the smell never faded either. It's my belief that the smell of motor oil is the official smell of WW2. I think they perfumed everything made in WW2 with eu de mechanic shop by order of all countries involved.
Coretta Hattereaux The Germans actually mixed it in their chocolate rations during the invasion of France in 1940. It's kept them awake for 3 weeks without the need to take any sleep.
Never knew reviewing rations videos could be so interesting and historically educating. I have seen some other MREs channels, but yours is the best. You respect the things you get and always try to taste it and give a fair judgment no matter what it is, where it's from or which year it's from. Keep it up :)

It seems like that is basically a survival kit and not just a run of the mill ration. In any case, it's much more likely for a flier to have to do the whole escape and evasion thing alone or with 1 or 2 crewmembers, so giving them the ability to skip sleep, stay alert, or ignore hunger for a couple extra days doesn't seem too unusual

Standard British tobacco tin still available today, in fact we used to build our own survival kits using such a tin, usually an Old Holborn or Golden Virginia tin and would have for example waxed matches, water tablets, rope saw, couple condoms, Oxo cubes, chocolate bar, fishing line and hook, sutures and tape and assuming you had your combat knife at least, you had everything to survive in the field from building an A frame shelter to fishing, snare and the condoms were for water storage.
By "Ration" they really meant "sugar and amphetamines" lol. Love what you do and thank you for doing it. Been binge watching your videos after finding your channel.

I suspect given most countries have grandfather clauses for both firearms and other generally prohibited items, given the historical importance and rarity of such items they would not be sold with intent for consumption and thus probably would not be considered dealing

Those certainly are 5mg tablets. Read an interesting paper just recently about the war prison during this time, where soldiers were taking up to 250mg of benzedrine at once by cracking open the plastic inhalers given out with this stuff prescribed for congestion. Many of the soldiers who took these amphetamines, probably 25/100 would end up habitual users.

Just seems like a fantasy to imagine what they experienced. We as people take it all for granted. Every nation does I feel. I can't even imagine what that would have been like. Thank you for making these review videos! I found your channel through clicking on random related videos from watching gundog's videos. I don't understand everything because, well, I'm a 20-year-old female going to college for video game design, but nevertheless your videos are fascinating. :) I am currently taking a class on The World Wars, so it is interesting to get an inside look at the different rations that soldiers had through the wars, it give a different perspective as well.
I like the tin on this one. The gasket was a nice idea to try to help preserving the contents. I can see the idea of a stimulant, but would be more likely to have thought they would have used caffiene tablets. I am amazed at how few of them were issued either a pain killer of some type (even aspirin would have been nice) or other first aid supplies.

Me too, reality is it would be schedule 2 or 3 still... but kind of a grey area type deal. amphetamine is schedule 2 I think.

Like, back during prohibition, all the senators and the president all had their collections of alcohol and spirits which they had built up in anticipation of prohibition, and this was legal to own and for personal use, as you it was yours before the law passed.
I figure, the DEA isn't going to care about this old stuff floating about in collection circles, it'd only start becoming an issue legally if he began distributing and selling it for consumption (though nobody would because this wouldn't be an economically sound way to go about it)

I don't understand everything because, well, I'm a 20-year-old female going to college for video game design, but nevertheless your videos are fascinating. :) I am currently taking a class on The World Wars, so it is interesting to get an inside look at the different rations that soldiers had through the wars, it give a different perspective as well.

I like the tin on this one. The gasket was a nice idea to try to help preserving the contents. I can see the idea of a stimulant, but would be more likely to have thought they would have used caffiene tablets. I am amazed at how few of them were issued either a pain killer of some type (even aspirin would have been nice) or other first aid supplies.
They definitely were not caffeine tablets. They were benzadrine, the British’s answer to the Germans pervatin.
