Today's training: sprints on the fells to recalibrate the mind & perception to pain (share with someone who should read this). Inspired by Emil Zátopek (considered to be the greatest runner of the 20th century) he's best known for winning 3 gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki (5k, 10k and marathon). But the reason Zátopek is a hero of mine is because his success had little to do with his running technique, but rather his unparalleled work ethic and resilience to pain. He famously said, “It's at the borders of pain and suffering that the men are separated from the boys. Essentially, we distinguish ourselves from the rest. If you want to win something, run the 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon." What Zátopek understood is training expands the capabilities of the muscles and heart but also recalibrate the brains horizons and perceptions to pain. This is based on research based on the European Journal of Physiology who found high intensity training does not change your pain sensitivity (the point at which you notice pain), but can increase pain tolerance (how long you're willing to endure pain) More videos & articles coming on this soon as I take the @Gymshark familia up the fells to film and we test their latest base layers against the wind, rain and elements.

YOu have inspired my 14 year old son to start getting outside after being off school with anxiety for the past two years. He convinced me to help him carry a massive log home from Eskmeals beach 3 miles to Muncaster where we live, west coast Cumbria. My shoulders are knackered, but we have a new training log to hoike around the valley. Bonus.

This is awesome parenting, and you're making memories that will last a lifetime! There's good evidence emerging that the connection to nature is crucial for people with anxiety/depression, as many of the microbes encountered in the natural environment are beneficial to reseeding the gut microbiome, the lungs, and the skin. We have been in a symbiotic relationship with these organisms throughout our evolutionary past, and they play a crucial role in many systems of the body. Unfortunately, our sanitized, sedentary, polluted lifestyles are not conducive to good health. Get your son, and yourself, mobile and active in nature and you will both benefit immeasurably. Good luck and have fun! :)

Ross, you sir have been a total inspiration and have made me go from a 5k parkrun to the Inverness marathon in October. I'm a heavy fella at 106kg and love weightlifting however my training and diet has all changed leading from what I've learned from you over your many TH-cam vids and I'm currently waiting on the delivery of the world's fittest book. Also wanting to come to your tour in Glasgow however trying to convince a pal to tag along so I don't look like a lonely saddo 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 hopefully see you in May boss.

sprinting up a steep hill for over 2 minutes is absolutely brutal but it's one of the very best exercises for improving stamina and strength. When I first started doing it I would actually feel sick afterwards. It takes a while to get used to it but the improvement you will see in your running times will be worth it.

Millican Dalton , the professor of adventure, lived in that cave on Castle Crag in Borrowdale for more than 40 years, he was a vegetarian, teetotal pacifist and should be venerated by alternative lifestylers as he was a pioneer of living with nature a hundred years before it became more popular ( and easier, he must have been a tough man to survive the Cumbrian winters).
