As someone who studied fine arts the idea that a makeup artist in the 90's created the golden ratio itself is hilarious. To do anything on or with a face you have to have an understanding of anatomy and color, MUA's before her weren't just throwing down powder and hoping it worked 😂

Their current palette is 80 bucks Canadian 😅and has a defective shade which I sometimes think is done to bring hype to that palette/company so it gets talked about….but this isn’t 2018 .Many of us changed with the pandemic and thankfully grew up. Norvina was selling her lifestyle at a time when people like Jeffree were creating mass consumers out of children who didn’t need 850 eyeshadows but were told they did to be that awesome influencer wannabe. Todays consumers thankfully for the most part can’t afford to drop that kind of cash . We want simple affordable products that do the job and make us feel confident, and not pay for the 50th birkin for some vapid idiot 😂

I think the pandemic also played it's part in a lot of brands losing traction. People could no longer afford nor did they care about buying a bunch of makeup. We had bigger fish to fry. Then coming out of the pandemic there's been more of a trend towards minimalism and anti-consumerism. People got tired of it all.

And with the massive inflation kicking off due to the invasion of Ukraine, of course we're buying even less of the non-essentials. I believe the reason people are not buying from these brands anymore it’s because in the boom of make up era, everybody bought so much make up try to so many different products and bought from so many different brands that at this point, we all know what our favorite products are, and we only go to buy our regular make up products that need refills. I used to go to Anastasia for my brows before she had her own salon, when she worked at Juan Juan in the early nineties. Of course she didn’t talk about ratios or techniques then, you would just go into her room and come out looking so much better. No one could figure out what you had changed, because we really didn’t know how important brows were back then. She was always booked like crazy.
When she opened her own salon I still went to her for a few years, but it got more and more expensive as she got more famous, so I eventually went to other people at her salon and then other salons, because by that point there were tons of brow places. Brows were having a moment. A couple of decades later, I can definitively say that my brows never looked better than when she did them, and she could do them lightning fast. She could do them perfectly even if I had a toddler in my lap. Did I see that being the basis for an empire? No, I did not.

I moved to LA in 2006 and was eager to get my brows done at Anastasia in Beverly Hills. When I finally did, the workers there were snobs. They were looking me up and down - I was dressed nicely because I was having a shopping day, but they probably could tell I wasn't from BH and that was a problem? I WAS a paying customer, but they made me feel so awkward, I never went back. I tried Damone Roberts the next time and they were so nice, offered me water, made small talk, plus the brows were better! I've since moved, but still go to Damone for brows when I'm in town.

I feel like I missed some other launch that didn't go well, but Subculture is the only one that sticks out to me. It doesn't mean I like the owner as a person, but the ABH formula is one of my faves and I love their color stories.
Meanwhile, I finally splurged on a few ND palettes and I honestly never reach for them. I get why people like the formula, but for some reason I don't like the looks I end up creating with them?? Maybe it's because I got the Retro and Retro Glam palettes? Maybe someone will say it's user error, but for $70 I shouldn't have to be an MUA to like them as much as my ABH or even Colourpop palettes. I have to say... maybe the issue is also eye shadow pallettes.
I went through a pallette phase where I collected maybe 10-12 pallettes. And then one day I looked at my collection and I realized I just had all the shades I wanted. I am cool toned and with 2 ABH pallettes and a handful of pallettes from cheaper brands I was covered. I haven't bought a pallete since, and since powder products are mostly safe for years ( 6 month experation date on the box be damned), my collection has been the same since 2020 .
In 2019 all these influencers had collections of 30-150 palletes and at a certain point we all realized that we were just addicted to buying new stuff and lost interest. Those de-haul or de-clutter vids started to become popular because it was fun to compare similar products and gag at the excess of beauty TH-cam. The "glam" phase also became unpopular as people started to go for a "soft clean" look.
So maybe ABH should focus on eyeliner or something that you want to replace every 3-6 months ... a nice clean black that doesnt rub off, wash off when I tear up or is usable on older more wrinked skin is still hard to find.

Hmm, I guess I'm just a regular person and not an MUA, but I generally like ABH's formula better than all the high end options you mentioned lol... partly because they have products I love that aren't that common elsewhere, so I'm surprised she's ripped off ideas from others. I'm very pale, and the ABH eye primer is the only one that really works for me because it's actually light enough. (Before I go further, I totally understand not liking a brand for political views, if the owner/their family is unlikeable, or they're problematic. I'm sharing my opinion of the products themselves outside of any political or moral views I don't share with the owner.) Don't get me wrong, I have products I love from all those brands, MAC's Face & Body Sheer Foundation is one of my faves, and NARS had a blush and bronzer palette that also had a setting powder. I used that NARS palette to death for a quick full face look until I panned it. My feelings on ND have been much more mixed, though.
For some reason I still prefer ABH to my ND's palettes, to the point that I've started thinking ND is a bit overrated, or at least not quite worth the amount of money I spent. For instance, I have been disappointed with the looks I get from the Retro Glam palette, especially since I already like Lime Crime's version of that color story in the Venus XL II palette, but I bought the ND version because her formula is supposed to better. I can see why people like ND's formula, but for some reason the Lime Crime palette is more flattering on me? I also haven't used the Retro palette as much as I thought I would despite the colors being my favorite kind.
So, when I decided I have too many palettes and for the sake of my ADHD need a very basic one for when I'm in a rush or need to get out the door asap, I didn't even consider the ND Glam palette that might've been a good fit. Despite TH-camrs rolling their eyes at how boring Tarte is, I took a chance on the Clay Play Volume II and one of the Tarlette Tease tiny palettes. This was mostly because another TH-camr pointed out that despite Tarte being considered boring by the beauty community, their products are actually still extremely popular.
I'm not sure what ABH's sales are like, but I wonder if they're a lot like Tarte, where beauty influencers have decided they're "over", but your average consumer still likes the products.

Since I got into makeup in 2019, I noticed this thing in the beauty community - we always pick a "holy brand." You know, one brand that everyone agrees is like super special in the industry. They set the trends, and whenever they launch something new, it's all the rage. Reviewers won't skip a single product from this brand, even if it's just mediocre. People go crazy over it just because it's from that brand. Right now, I think the "holy brand" is Rare Beauty, before that it was Fenty. And back when I started getting into makeup in summer 2019, it was definitely Anastasia.
At that time, you couldn't miss a single new product from Amastasia even if you tried because EVERYONE was talking about it. But then, things started to change when in six months of summer-autumn 2019 they dropped like ten new palettes. They used to feel unique and rare with 1-2 palettes a year, but the constant releases took away that magic they had.
For me, it became impossible to keep up with all those new palettes, and I just gave up on the brand altogether. After they lost their "holy brand" status, people started seeing their products for what they really were - not just blindly favoring them 'cause they were from Anastasia. These products were not bad but when that aura of uniqueness dissapeared, all that was left were mostly just mediocre products. And that's when the brand started struggling to make their products as popular as before..
I think that once you lose that "holy brand" title, there is no way back. But they can still become a popular brand if they put out some really outstanding products. It will not be the same evel of popularity though. However I personally won't support them anymore after the "Anastasia supporting russia" controversy.
Also here's an interesting thing I heard from a few people (can't prove it though, so take it with a grain of salt). Allegedly Sephora might have funded the development of the Norvina line. They wanted more colorful eyeshadows in their stores to attract younger customers and makeup pros. Since Anastasia was the most trusted brand at that time, Sephora thought it was a great idea for Anastasia to come up with this line. That might be the reason why Anastasia was pressured to release those palettes so quickly.

The pandemic definitely played a role in my change of heart and also I realized that nobody pays too much attention to your make up unless it's badly applied. A fit body, nice cloths and a little bit of make up to make you a better version of yourself are a better overall strategy to look put together. I don't have 2 hours to just apply a full face with an elaborate eyelook.

After digging into it more, I came to realize that it wasn't the first time and that they had a rotten history of ripping people off. It was disheartening because I used to go to all the makeup events in LA and met Anastasia, and she was such a lovely person (at least to me, anyway). I wanted to support her brand even more because I haven't always had good experiences with many brand owners at these events. But I noticed things got worse when Norvina took over. I’m glad you’re talking about this because I’ve only heard about the Putin crap on Reddit. It’s good for people to be aware of things like this so they can make informed decisions whether or not to continue to support the brand. I own the Soft Glam palette… when I bought it I really thought it would become a favorite, but I felt like half of the shades were too warm for me so it didn’t become a staple. I just pulled it out yesterday after like a year of it being in my closet and I still feel the same way. I did like the clear brow gel, which I use for special occasions, and the brow pencil but I like my The Balm one better. I just don’t feel like I personally can support the brand in the future, and even if it wasn’t for her supporting Putin there are just so many amazing brands out there that are so much more creative, unproblematic and affordable with even better quality. Especially when it comes to indie eyeshadow! I’ve also heard some weird stuff about Norvina.. apparently one time a girl I knew in college and Norvina bumped into each other at a restaurant or somewhere and she was like “do you KNOW who I am?” and the girl was like “no sweetie” and then a few months later her friend randomly was on her IG page and she saw the phone, that’s when she recognized Norvina was the girl she bumped into 😂

But I used to watch so many youtubers who are from the US, and as someone who is interested in makeup I used to always check out the products and think about one day I will buy all those products. So when I saw all the youtubers are using anastasia Beverly hills, I followed their Instagram account too, to just see their new makeup releases. At that time many influences were collaborating with different makeup brands and releasing pallettes and other products.
When they started these ABH norvina palettes, I literally thought norvina is some influencer or celebrity who hust keeps collaborating with the brand ABH. I also think it was made to look that way. So I completely agree with you about norvina acting like she was a celebrity before being with the brand. My sister is a cosmetologist here in the US and worked as a markup artist here for several years (early 00s mainly), so when I was growing up, I learned everything about makeup from her. She never mentioned Anastasia or her brow technique, even tho I distinctly remember her talking about Kevin Aucoin, Pat McGrath, and Bobbi Brown (among others that I sadly cannot remember these days). So, I don't think very many people outside of SoCal probably knew about Anastasia until the brand got big on socials 😆 I have no idea where the idea of her using the golden ration first came from lol

ABH was a moment. I think the moment has passed. I was 18 in 2000 and I do remember at some point her brow products coming out and being pretty popular. I think it was for good reason because they did work well and I'm not sure there was a brand before that was exclusively helping you enhance your brows. It was a cool concept! Over time, I never tried anything else form her, but continued to buy the brow wiz pencil and occasionally the powder or another new launch. Now there are so many great, affordable, thin brow pencils, there's no need for me to spend 30 bucks where I can get ELF or Milani for under 10

Then my generation got into the Kevin aucoin book and just used eyeshadow to get the looks, and I'm from veryyy rural Europe. I was kinda stoked when abh came out with those palettes but the quality was heinous. Crème texturised your skin like an orange and the powder either disappeared afte an hour or stained like soot. It really was the dawn of skin that only looked good on pictures

@Wildthinglove Kind of agree _just_ based off of what is written here. About being cold, no one is obligated to be friendly to everyone, so long as they're still polite. And special hair + makeup rules make sense for a salon, especially one with a bit of a name - obviously they'll want to be perceived as skilled and professional by their clientele.
Now, if Anastasia was downright nasty to her staff, or unreasonably restrictive about the dress code, that's a different story. But it doesn't seem like that was the case based off of what this person stated.
