I was a huge fan of Paula's Choice back in the day, when Paula was actually running the company. Since selling it though, the product line has ballooned to the point of over-saturation of the same key ingredients in 100 different varieties. Paula also used to call toners an unnecessary waste of money, but now they carry several. The prices have also gone way up, putting them in a more luxury tier of skincare. I continue to use a couple of her products religiously, and am relieve they haven't been reformulated (yet), but I feel they've completely lost touch with their original philosophy and I just wish they'd scale back their line a bit. I also wonder why they no longer offer makeup -- I hadn't tried much of it, but it made sense, given her career history and the books she wrote.

I have been a Paula fan even before she created her skin care line. Not sure what happened over the years, but I don't use any of her products anymore except the BHA 9.

Yes, I remember ages ago Paula saying basically that Paula's Choice would never make wild claims and the type of marketing every other company does. Interesting how it turned out. 😂

From the very early days, Paula’s Choice made and sold toners. I don’t recall her being deadset against toners in principle. I think she was just against making overinflated claims around them.

I happened to get a major deal on the renewing mask once and that was excellent, but every other thing I’ve tried has been a major miss for me. And as much as I liked that mask I can’t justify paying full price for something that isn’t at all necessary 😅

100%! They still have many great products, but the brand has changed so much. I wish they would reel in their line too! The whole point was to demystify skin care and make quality products, not oversaturate the market and create a new unnecessary product each month.

I just started using the cleanser and I don’t have the same issue you do. It mildly foams, spreads nice and even, and rinses great. I use just a dime size and it works wonderfully whether it’s in the shower or over the sink.

This review was so validating! I have used the calm line for years and loved it for my extremely dry, rosacea-prone skin. I tried the new cleanser right away knowing reformulations can sometimes be for the worse...and I really hated it right away. So validating to hear you found it to be disappointing as well!!

I felt the same way! I loved the Calm cleanser for N to Dry skin (formerly Moisture Boost), and I was disappointed with the new Calm cleanser. I've been using the Moisture Boost for 22 years! I can't believe they've discontinued it. If you feel like I do, please let them know. I'm hoping they bring it back if enough people "complain." Thanks! : )

For me, I really like creamy, extremely moisturizing cleansers because my skin is really dry all times of the year. I think when they changed the cleanser to be universal and not specific to either dry or oily it lost some of the hydration and moisturizing I loved about the original and it felt almost stripping to my skin.

How odd I have the whole set and LOVE the cleanser. It's so gentle and silky, I don't find that it clumps at all, perhaps if I don't have enough water on my face before i can maybe see what you mean. The toner is so soothing and I also love the bha and moisturizers. I don't find the lighter one drying at all but it's certainly light. They have a pretty good video on this release that I found informative and they touch on that peptide from more of a soothing perspective

I’ve been using Paula’s Choice for decades. The only “must have” for me is the Ultra Light Super Concentrate Antioxidant Serum. It’s the only PC product I’d pay full price for. Luckily PC has regular sales here in the US. When there’s a good sale I will sometimes buy something new to try, some I’ve liked and repurchased but never at full price. Dr Dray is right these products have become over priced compared to what you can get elsewhere.

Dr Dray, a whole video on urea would be great! I can see from various online comments that some people still think it is related to urine in some way. It has SAVED my dehydrated skin; in only 2 weeks, during a very cold spell in an arid climate, I have been able to cut back on several layers of moisturizer, the humectant + occlusive action seems to be perfect for my mature, dry skin. Also, I am assuming the GB overnight retinol does not contain enough retinol to really affect my skin or irritate on top of the retinol (a suspect one by juice beauty that only admits to being half bakuchikol in the French packaging language) that I use 3-4 layers earlier? That GB face & body line is incredible!!!

I still use sone of PC products, but only the ones that have not been changed. The perfectly balanced cleanser is very nice. Dr Drey recommended it here in this video. And the Pore reducing Toner in the skin balancing line. Of course the Skin perfecting BHA liquid that Paula originally created for herself.
The Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30 is also vey 18:50 18:50 (newer product.
I learned a-lot from Paula, one important lesion was that fragrance in skin care is NOT a skin care ingredient.
    Something E.L needs to learn!
P.C still has some good safe bets.

The OLD calm cleanser was one of the BEST cleansers I've ever had on my sensitive skin - and I've tried many. I didn't purchase it that long ago and planned on repurchasing but now they've changed it and taken out all the ingredients that attracted me to it in the first place 😭😭😭 They better not mess with my Resist hydrating cleanser.... As someone with oily, yet sensitive and redness prone skin (potentially mild rosacea)who can't use cleansing oils or balm, finding the right balance of effective cleansing without stripping and flaring redness can be extremely difficult and having the right one makes all the difference. Not happy about this Paula, why mess with perfection?!

  • @TheWilDOn31
    @TheWilDOn31 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I recently started using the cleanser. I think it's amazing.
The foam was the same as explained in this video, but the result is great 👌. Works really well for my skin (combination, acne prone, sensitive). I use a gel moisturiser from their Balance line, and the hydrating mask - the green one - and it works wonderfully for redness, sebum and I get just the right level of hydration.
I'm glad I didn't listen to a review based on the consistency of the foam. I care about the results.
I hope Paula's Choice keeps making these products I'm using because I'm tired of searching and trying new products and wasting money.

I had a completely different experience with the new Paula's Choice Calm Products. I'm using many of the new Calm products, and my skin has not looked this good in many years. Redness gone, irritation gone, smooth, plump, far fewer pores. I have very sensitive, combo skin, sub-type 2 rosacea. I use the Calm Weightless moisturizer under my makeup, and the Rescue & Repair Intensive Moisturizer at night. I also use the Calm Serum. Cleanser, and 1% BHA. I'm posting this to help others who have super-sensitive skin. Nothing else was working for me: Avene, CeraVe, LaRoche-Posay. I was desperate, so I tried Calm, even with this pretty bad review. As someone who is currently undergoing treatment for melasma, using Tretinoin and Hydroquinone- The Calm line has been a godsend. I’m on my second bottle of the Ultra Gentle Cleanser, and I love the bouncy and fluffy cloud, gel-like texture. I have not had the application issues that Dr Dray had. Sorry to hear that it wasn’t spreading easily. I do recommend using plenty of water to first emulsify enough because a little bit goes a looong way. I LOVE THE NOURISHING MILKY TONER! Feels more like a nurturing and hydrating serum. NOTE: I’ve been using PC products for over two years, I’ve learned so much about ingredients and skincare, and my skin has been transforming and progressing wonderfully in a realistic and safe way. i LOVED the 1% CALM BHA lotion exfoliant and i was looking for it again to put it on my christmas wishlist and was heartbroken to see it was reformulated and clearly a very different product. this video came at the perfect time to decide if i should take the risk on the new formula. the application footage makes it look a lot more like the old formula than the marketing picutres shown on the PC website. thank you! i think ill try it

I suspect the PC products could be reacting to whatever other brand products she's using. I only use one brand, for this reason... Paula's Choice. Brands are made to work best together. I use the entire calm line, and I don't have any of these issues. I've never used a smoother flowing, better hydrating moisturizer. And the cleanser does not "clump up"! Maybe she's not applying it to a wet face, or not adding water? Anyway, don't be afraid to try it.

  • @lorainemcgillivray77

Hi Dr Dray the previous incarnation of the calm line has always been a reliable choice for my rosacea and eczema prone skin. Apparently the serum is unchanged in formulation and only the packaging on that one. The others however are new formulations. The 1% BHA was a HG product for me and I hope I can still use the new version. As to the moisturiser from the calm line previously - It was fine, but I prefer the clinical ultra rich moisturiser or the omega moisturiser on my skin. Truthfully although it's not an inexpensive line my skin responds well to most of the products I've tried from PC and that in of itself can be worth the money - having more affordable products i can't use is a false economy after all. I like the omega cleansing balm more than the old calm cleanser, but the texture of the new one does look odd. I'll try the travel sizes first as you said. Best wishes.

I tried the new Calm cleanser, and I think it works better if you add a little water to it and rub your hands together and then apply it to your wet face. What happened to Dr. Dray doesn't happen to me when I use it. That being said, I do prefer the old formula, but I think that's just personal preferance as the former cleanser was more "creamy." This is more of a gel that turns into a cream when water is added.

If it's in a white bottle, you will love it!! If it's the new one, you will probably like it as well. The new Calm cleanser is a gel that emulsifies into a cream when water is added to it. Put a little into the palm of your hand and rub your wet hands together. Also, you need to wet your face first before using either of these cleansers.

The brand just isn’t what it used to be back when Paula was owning and running the show. The new owners have clearly turned their back on the principles the brand was built on. They’ve successfully destroyed what used to be an innovative and successful niche brand . Now they’re all about the gimmicky marketing and higher prices. Even their customer service isn’t what it used to be. I will buy the occasional “legacy” product from them if I can’t find a less expensive alternative somewhere else. Otherwise all I have of Paula’s choice is the good old memories.

Late to the party, but I wanted to chime in in case it helps anyone.
If applied to a soaking wet face and massaged slightly in wet palms first, the cleanser spreads nicely over the skin. (Probably why using it in the shower worked better). I do double cleanse to remove makeup first, but find it a very soothing cleanser that rinses clean and leaves skin soft. And is great for a non-stripping morning cleanse.
The toner is super calming. It needs to be shaken first, and is best used poured into palm and dabbed onto the skin with fingertips, section by section, and gently spread around like a serum.
I haven't tried the other items so can't comment, but I did use the OLD Calm line and actually find the new cleanser & toner to be more soothing.
It'd be a shame for some to miss out on the benefits as a result of a poor review.
And yes, trying travel sizes is smart.
BTW, love your channel, Dr. Dray! 🙂
