Got this from a forum and I think he pretty much hit the nail on the head. The song is about Dream Theater and their influence on progressive rock. The first 13 and a half minutes of that song sound very similar to pink floyd, yes, genesis, the beatles, and many other progressive rock pioneers. This is done on purpose, considering that they started the genre, so Dream Theater started the song by playing their music very much like their influences - "i never wanted to become someone like him" basically means Dream Theater, when they were young, never wanted to be like their influences because they wanted to be independent. However no matter how hard they try they will end up being just like them in some way, although still original - "Then all I swore that I would never be was now, so suddenly, the only thing, I wanted, to become, to be someone just like him." The next part of the song is sort of a metaphoric explanation of how Dream Theater became like them, other than that there is not much i can explain. At about 14 minutes into the song, a strong, very progressive metalish riff comes into play, and that is where the line "Isn't this where we came in?" (sample from Pink Floyd The Wall) is heard. The basic reason for this quote is to explain that at this point in time (around 1989), Dream Theater opened the door to a new genre (Progmetal, for those of you who dont know). thank you for reacting to my all time favorite dream theater song! i think the reason i love it so much is because its very reminiscent of "shine on you crazy diamond" which is my favorite floyd song. im so happy yall loved it as much as i do; and yes you need to hear it at least 10 times to start to understand the lyrics and music. to me, its about the cyclical nature of life and humanity in general.
Great video! Came here from the post about the negative post to spread w positive energy. I love the hat, dude! That’s my style. And Kel, *chefs kiss* you are a gorgeous woman. 😍😍😍
Craziest think about this song, is that the last piano note, is the exact same with which the album begins in the first song. So you come full circle....
The 1st song is Root Of All Evil (ROOT). The 8th and last song is Octavarium (OCTAVE). If you listen to the last piano note on the last song (In The Name Of God) on their 7th album (Train Of Thought), it's the same piano note as the beginning of Root Of All Evil on their 8th album. Tying these albums together. Additionally, if you listen to the static at the end of last song (Scene Nine: Finally Free) on their 5th album (Scenes From A Memory), it's the same static at the beginning on the first song (Glass Prison) on their 6th album (Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence), tying those albums together.
Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory is actually their first rock opera. It was released in 1999. It is also amazing and epic and mind-blowing as all their other epic albums!!!!!
I think Kel would love their song Illumination Theory - there is an orchestral part that is out of this world. Last tour they did Change Of Seasons for an encore which is also 23 minutes and it was awesome!
Rich & Kel you guys are awesome just sharing your life with us keep it up. Haven't been with you all to long but love what you do for turning us on to different music. An just love seeing you two love life an each other don't change. Love you guys
It's so beautiful to watch two wonderful people grow fond of each other, bonding and feeling the music at the same time! It's been so great to watch you react to my favorite DT song as well. This was my first reaction video from you guys, but will def not be the last. Liked and subbed!
Second Life Syndrome by Riverside is one you’ll probably like. Also, since you asked for songs that could ease you into the screaming vocals, The Drapery Falls by Opeth is pretty balanced in that regard I think.
Dream Theater - Illumination Theory ( Live From The Boston Opera House )..Is another amazing, moving 20 min Masterpiece...with Choir, Orchestra and 5 distict parts....Awesome! Rich has probably heard it as they play in concert from time to time. But a great, emotional ride ..building..building and Killing it at the end..."what are you willing to live for, die for and kill for?"... Beautiful!
This is 1 of my all time favourite Dream Theater songs. Quite an emotional song especially the middle section (which is centred round Robin Williams/Robert DeNiro movie 'Awakenings'- which i would advise a watch if not seen). I cry everytime i hear this song. (I am a metalhead of 40yrs listening to the best music on the planet. All genres like your good selves. But a lot of bands still catch me unawares. Anyway great reaction. You guys are great. Keep it real 🤘🤘
Hi guys, trust me, one of the KEY performer in terms of accessible screams is Devin Townsend. One of the best vocalist in the world, clean and harsh and emotional. Easiest songs to access his screaming abilities : - stormblending - kingdom (live EMGtv) - grace live retina circus Then mandatory - dead head live at Royal albert hall - deap peace - bastard live royal albert hall
Just like the Orion song from Metallica, this Octavarium song seems to be brought from heaven to be enjoyed by the inhabitants of the earth. This is what I call a Masterpiece ...
Kel & rich, continue doing what your doing. I wouldn't personally give this person any creedance, but it's understandable why you wanted to inform your subscribers! Anyone can see you love the music& each other. Respect to you both.
This is one of those Songs that just Sweeps you Away and just won't let you go until you reach the End and after you have really gone through the Full Emotional Range of Each Stage in the Song.... But it is Such an Amazing Ride
Portnoy tweeted the following yesterday about how first album: I can’t believe it’s been 30 years ago today that my very 1st (real) album was released!! March 6th 1989 Dream Theater’s When Dream And Day Unite was released l and it’s been quite the journey ever since!! Thank you to everyone that has allowed me to continue this journey...
Oh Yes!!! Jaw drop for sure! Takes you to another Planet!! Thanks for that one! Watch the live version of Octavarium from 'Score" (A live Concert) with the full orchestra and that last "God Note" just cuts you in half! Amazing....Octavarium is played second to last just before Metropolis
I think this song represents a picture of the universe, a human being with his life. Born, alive, until the time of death. Listening to this song is like feeling the arrival of a gentle fairy, and also the appearance of a cruel monster. I am sure God is in all the harmony of Octavarium songs. It's hard to understand how this song was created 🙏🙆♂️
I love the song and your reaction to it. I also kinda like the fact that the end of the previous album is the beginning of this one. The DTalbums from 1999 and to this one are kind of intertwined. Metropolis prt 2: Scenes from a Memory --> Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence --> Train of Thought --> Octavarium
After hearing Octavarium, please listen to Trial of Tears - I swear this one they play live all the time, but has a bit of Rush beginning. Beautiful lyrics and music that will take you to somewhere else for 13 minutes! Wonderful long solo guitar/ keyboard instrumental section too!
If you want a great listening experience you guys should check out Ayreon’s album The human equation. It has Dt’s singer James Labrie who sings the part of the main character. It’s a concept album and has a lot of different singers who play characters as well.Amazing piece of work.
Couldn't find the OP that led me to this reaction, but I wanted to inject some positive on this thread since negativity was spewed. I found Kel and Rich about a week after my wife filed for divorce. It makes sense our marriage survived hell for a long time, but didn't make it in the end. Your mind, body and soul still goes to a very dark place with the death of a relationship you poured everything into for almost 17 years. From what I've been able to gleen from your channel, both of you were previously married and lost a son. I may not be exact on this but your relationship has actually provided a light at the end of the tunnel. It is an example that sometimes life beats the crap out of you, but there is hope for love, joy and happiness to re-emerge and sprout anew. Keep doing what you do, you are an inspiration to more than you may realize.
I was married 20 years to my first wife. I was unhappy the last several years and filed for a divorce, life is too short to be unhappy! Then I met an incredible woman over 2 years ago that truly showed me what love was for the first time in my life. I feel so fortunate, we've been married 5 months now and our love grows stronger every day. My advice is don't settle for someone, you'll know when you've met your soulmate, they really exist!
So you're really going to need to watch the live performance of Illumination Theory in Boston. I promise you that you will be blown away. Live with an orchestra and a choir. Simply one of the best live songs they've ever done.
My all-time favourite song by any band and/or artists. Thank you for reacting to it! If you have 40 minutes - react to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (the song). My second all-time favourite song. Thank you.
Probably the coolest thing about Octavarium is how it fits within the album as a whole. It calls back on musical and lyrical themes detailed in previous songs (this is the last song on the album) and subtly revisits them. Also, the stream of consciousness section in the middle is chock full of song references to a lot of their favorite bands and they flow together almost like word association. Check out some of the information available about how the song and album is all tied together, it’s kinda mind blowing.
Nerd facts... DT will often revert back to older songs with their lyrics sometimes. This album, Octavarium, isnt a concept album but the songs reference each other a little bit. There are a 8 songs on this album and starting with the first song, The Root of All Evil, the songs move up in octaves. Until they reach the final 8th octave, titled, Octavarium. The first note of, Root of All Evil, is the final note of the last album, Train of Thought. And the beginning of Root of All Evil is the ending to, Octavarium. The song, Octavarium in the middle section towards the end, they give 7 references to the prior songs on that album until they reach the climax of the 8th octave. And finally, this song is about, the band not wanting to become like the other progressive metal/rock bands before them. Not getting in that groove of what it means to be your "everyday progressive band". But throughout the years, it inadvertently, ended up happening anyway. Ok, I'm done lol I loved your reaction!!!
If Y'all got goosebumps from this, you should 100% react to the live version from the Score DVD. They had a full orchestra backing them up for the entire second set of that show.
One of the best bands to listen to with harsh vocals is Opeth. The song 'Bleak' is a perfect starting point for those not used to the style (like me at first listen), and it has clean vocals to balance things out.
It is so delightful to see Kel's reactions to the orchestra parts in the ending... I think I can imagine her hearing what she played all her life but this time put together with the power and strength she said it always lacked for her. And it's equally delightful to see you, Rich, always so happy to se her realising she loves metal. I wish I could do reactions like that with my girlfriend, but she thinks metal is too loud haha You're both lucky to have each other and thanks to let us see a bit of all this love that exists between you.
As others have pointed out - this song is an homage to the music that the band loved. I do love this song also.... and you guys HAVE to listen to Genesis: "Supper's Ready", and "Cinema Show" (both songs were mentioned in the middle of this song - and for good reason. Both are equally epic to this - and if you folks haven't heard them before, they will blow your mind equally.
Loving your guys reactions to DT. It’s a long one, but do Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Or for a shorter one, with one of Petrucci’s best guitar solos, The Spirit Carries On.
Haha you're wonderful. Regarding the screaming i'd say White Cluster by Opeth has a very tasteful ratio, with the overall arrangement being what's focused on most. A truly beautiful composition in my opinion.
hey you guys should check out their album Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory if you haven't. It's a concept album and the whole song makes up the story so make sure to listen to it sequentially .
That last guitar note, no matter how many times I hear it, raises every hair on my on my body. My desert island song, Along with The Odyssey by Symphony X. If you guys have never heard Symphony X, then you need to change that immediately . Dream theater, Symphony X, Haken, and Ayreon are my golden prog bands. Also, a good place to get into screaming vocals/harsh vocals would be Trivium, Opeth, Ayreon(very rarely has scream vocals but always going amazingly well) or Between The Buried and Me. These were the bands that got me into harsher vocals. Good place to start for each would be Beyond Oblivion or if you want an epic Shogun for Trivium,. Opeth - you should check out Ghost of Perdition, one of their best imho Ayreon - listen to Everybody Dies or Day Twelve: Trauma, also if neither of you have ever heard The Human Equation album by Ayreon, it is my favorite concept album of all time. It is a masterpiece. Betweeen the Buried and Me - They can be a bit much with harsh vocals but their album Coma Ecliptic is kind of like their Scenes from a Memory and is a little lighter, the song The Coma Machine is a great place to start! Cheers!
Someone mentioned "SCORE" in the comments down below. It's a 4 or 5 disc DVD set of the live performance. Half the performance is this album, with OCTIVARIUM adding a full size orchestration behind them. If you can score these DVD'S it's well worth the price!
React to their perfomance of the song in the "Score" concert....A live orchestra accompanied the band...It's probably their best live rendition of it...
There is some good screaming in Faith no More because Mike the lead singer sprinkles screams here and there depending on what album your listening to. I'd suggest songs off of "Angel Dust." Alot of great singing and screams when needed.
Wow! 😍 I love all your videos! And in this video, it's so amazing because you kissed each other right at the moment when my favorite part was playing! (it was even exactly the second at 24:59 🤩😊👍🤘 😅👍

thank you for reacting to my all time favorite dream theater song! i think the reason i love it so much is because its very reminiscent of "shine on you crazy diamond" which is my favorite floyd song. im so happy yall loved it as much as i do; and yes you need to hear it at least 10 times to start to understand the lyrics and music. to me, its about the cyclical nature of life and humanity in general.
U guys are amazing. U bring to life the energy that ur supposed to feel with music. Thank u.
great couple❤️ cuteness lov u guys
Octavarium is masterspiece, should have grammy , period
This song is so beyond majestic.
Great video! Came here from the post about the negative post to spread w positive energy. I love the hat, dude! That’s my style. And Kel, *chefs kiss* you are a gorgeous woman. 😍😍😍
A Change of Seasons. Another long one, but quite excellent. Appreciate the content!!
"John Petrucci is a senseless heartless guitarist with no feeling"
John Petrucci: hold my beer 24:06
Liked and subbed!
incredible song...a masterpiece
You guys are awesome. Thank you for encapsulating what I feel every time I listen to DT. Rock on!
I love watching your reactions. It's the closet I've ever come to hearing the songs again for the first time.
Beautiful!
Octavarium is my favorite song of Dream Theater..! Great reaction guys..! Cheers from Argentina :)
YES!!!! 11:23 I must have listened to that transition half a million times. Beautiful. John Myung's bass line is masterful
Keep it real
🤘🤘
This song lives up to their original name: Majesty.
It's the 21st October 2020 and listened for the first time to the live version of this song and was as the saying goes.blown away what an amazing song
Hi guys, trust me, one of the KEY performer in terms of accessible screams is Devin Townsend. One of the best vocalist in the world, clean and harsh and emotional.
Easiest songs to access his screaming abilities :
- stormblending
- kingdom (live EMGtv)
- grace live retina circus
Then mandatory
- dead head live at Royal albert hall
- deap peace
- bastard live royal albert hall
I have literally listened to this album for weeks straight. Every listen I get more and more enjoyment from this master piece.
so good! I haven't had this much fun experiencing this since I saw it live. Thank you!
Portnoy tweeted the following yesterday about how first album:
I can’t believe it’s been 30 years ago today that my very 1st (real) album was released!! March 6th 1989 Dream Theater’s When Dream And Day Unite was released l and it’s been quite the journey ever since!! Thank you to everyone that has allowed me to continue this journey...
Portnoy suck.. move on with mangini..
Yeah that Guitar Work is AMAZINGLY INTENSE and Crazy..... This song is one Wild Stick of Dynamite. Glad you are Loving it
What a wonderful tune. I'm glad that I found this on your program. :-)
Thank you guys... I have nothing to add, you just expressed and said it laike we've felt it. Thx, we agree.
Oh Yes!!! Jaw drop for sure! Takes you to another Planet!! Thanks for that one! Watch the live version of Octavarium from 'Score" (A live Concert) with the full orchestra and that last "God Note" just cuts you in half! Amazing....Octavarium is played second to last just before Metropolis
I really like your channel. I have tickets for the September 26 show kicking off in Louisville Kentucky. I am so Psyched! Keep it going guys!
DT with great musician making great songs. Being listening to their songs since 1995. From Singapore
You two are adorable together. Great reactions
Great reaction. Keep going , so much music to explore!
I was sure there will be a reaction of you to this song and thank you for that
A nice pair😉
Check out some of the information available about how the song and album is all tied together, it’s kinda mind blowing.
she felt that solo
The live version of this song is ten times more breathtaking!! They play it with a full orchestra.
Miss you guys
Hope all is well
Nerd facts...
I like how she had her eyes closed most of the time, letting the music take over your soul
Scream reference... Pisces by Jinjer. A brilliant study of duality.
I wish I could do reactions like that with my girlfriend, but she thinks metal is too loud haha
You're both lucky to have each other and thanks to let us see a bit of all this love that exists between you.
OCTAVARIUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMM!!!!!!! one of my favorite... Illumination theory, count of tuscany, and all of their songs oh hahahaa
The masterpiece above all masterpieces. Everything in it, story, meaning, nuggets behind it, the messages and everything else is outstanding.
No, no shortened live version, just a LONGER one. Jordan always did an extended intro that made the song almost 30 minutes live.
Scenes From A Memory (the whole album would be great!) you will notice the diference in James` voice now and then... great album, nice story.
Thanx the sincere reaction!!!
I also enjoy Pantera because like Faith no More the feeling is there and it doesn't sound forced at all. Pantera is heavier though.
One of times i saw them this was their encore. Absolutely fantastic
🤘🤘
Loving your guys reactions to DT. It’s a long one, but do Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Or for a shorter one, with one of Petrucci’s best guitar solos, The Spirit Carries On.
Best song.. Every fucking second is Enjoyable.. Best musicians 🍻
Opeth - you should check out Ghost of Perdition, one of their best imho
Ayreon - listen to Everybody Dies or Day Twelve: Trauma, also if neither of you have ever heard The Human Equation album by Ayreon, it is my favorite concept album of all time.
Great react, great!!!!! You've been so emotional. Amazing. So You're ready for "The glass prison" from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
There is some good screaming in Faith no More because Mike the lead singer sprinkles screams here and there depending on what album your listening to. I'd suggest songs off of "Angel Dust." Alot of great singing and screams when needed.
Is the second time that I cry with you with music... first was "Blood Brothers". Thank U GUYS!!!!! love you.
Pleas do HELLS KITCHEN
Wow! 😍 I love all your videos! And in this video, it's so amazing because you kissed each other right at the moment when my favorite part was playing! (it was even exactly the second at 24:59 🤩😊👍🤘
😅👍
Octavarium live is absolutely mind-blowing. I do believe it is at Budakon also
Great description Kel.
That "Medicate me" section of the song is my favorite mainly because of the bass, but the lyrics, keyboards and drums are also great.
have you guys done Nightmare to remember** and "Count of Tuscany"?
Guys.. Watch this song in live version .. Octavarium - Score
They’ve listened to this song before and definitely had history
