Finally! Shadow for me is Suga’s take on the pressure of their rising fame. This was when he was only 26 years old and the band is on its phenomenal rise to success. Like in their other songs, shadow is referred to their haters, note those black images in the micdrop mv. It can also refer to the over zealous fans, the sasaengs. “I run but the shadow follows.” Lyrically, this song is so on point.

I have loved this song from the moment I heard it…getting what you thought you wanted and then not really being prepared for the downside of that is something I think everyone can relate to…and he raps like a god 💜

Yes! This song is so beautiful, so personal, expressed perfectly. I heard Shadow early on in my BTS journey and it's one of the things that really made me take interest in Suga, his writing, and his voice. Then I went down the rabbit hole and realized his writing resonates the most with me. It's one of my favorites from him.💜 #HappyBirthdaySuga!

To me, this song is Suga expressing what fame is. At the beginning of the song, he says he wants to become a rap star, etc. He got everything he wished for but didn't realize how lonely it would be at the top. He keeps rising higher and higher, but the depression and stress of being at the top is eating at him (the shadow) he doesn't want to keep going up if the shadow will get bigger but it's something he must accept in order to move on. This is such a great song even though it's sad

I always have conflicted feelings about Interlude: Shadow. I really love the song, it is so emotional, raw, and honest. Once again, Yoongi bares his heart to us.💜😻
On the other hand, I am always in tears listening to this song. It's so, honest, emotional, and raw, with Yoongi once again opening his heart to us. Beautiful and vulnerable, it grabs hold of my heart, rips it out, ties it up in a pretty bow, then presents it back to me. Leaving me sobbing, and in awe.😭💜😻
Happy Birthday Min Yoongi 💜😻 Borahae 💜💜💜

The people in black can be interpreted as a few things ... They are his Jungian shadow who he is trying to get away from but in the end he cannot escape them, thus he has to get along with them because the shadow is a part of the whole of who you are psychologically (react to the orchestral MV version of Black Swan, it is similar). When the vibe, mood & beat switch to what seems darker, less happy, more minor scale tone, & the room/clothes/colors feels blacker, that is now his shadow talking. He, the shadow, wants to be a rock star, but at the same time, being famous can give you anxiety. The people in black can also represent people who chase you down, especially when you are a celebrity, which these can be the aggressive Paparazzi, or just BTS ARMY in general. However, if they are ARMY, they are more like the toxic extremist fans perhaps, much like the "sasaengs" in Korean nomenclature. That is why there are people waiting at the closed doors of the hotel, them figuring out which rooms BTS are in & cannot wait to meet them. It is considered an invasion of privacy. And of course, all the people with smartphones at the end. Personally, there is something biblical about the smartphones, but I won't reveal what. I believe there was an explanation video of this song/MV somewhere. I cannot remember what the red stuff on the walls are, it seems like something organic. As always, a solid reaction.

As someone commented, DKDKTV did a good, clear explanation th-cam.com/video/LD0J4gr9Wno/w-d-xo.html , plus Bookish Theories also did one th-cam.com/video/-WY5KV-31_Q/w-d-xo.html The red material seems to reference Sir Anish Kapoor's work "Svayambh", made of a block covered in red wax & vaseline squeezing through smaller doors in galleries, thus leaving part of itself on the door frames - fans speculated that it represented that each stage to fame Yoongi passed through, he left part of his true self behind.

Wow. You're finally checking out shadow!?! This is one of my favorites of his and I HOPE he performs this on May 5th in Chicago!!!! So MY interpretation of this trailer is that the hallway scene is INSIDE Yoongi and all the doors are different sides/aspects of himself. The whole song is introspective... Yoongi looking inside himself and coming to terms with his darker side and that he can't ignore it since it is a part of him as well.
This was from the online concert "Map of the Soul ON:E" You could buy a ticket that allowed you to have multiple camera views so this may have been a fan that screen recorded and switched the view part way through... it's also why the live performance of Jimin's "Filter" and JK's "My Time" have weird camera angles at times; they were from the same concert.

Happy Birthday Suga! The red stuff on the walls is in imitation of an art piece by Anish Kapoor (called “self made or auto generated”) where wax was left on a wall like this about how we always leave traces of ourselves behind as we go, this and the use of the Jean Michel Basquiet art and the reuse of old artwork (and samples) from their debut days makes me love this MV. It’s such an interesting way to show the doubts your shadow self has but also the confrontation with the shadow as being an equal part you must accept. Ugh I could go on and on about how much I love this. “This particular phrase from Carl Jung‘s quote, “The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul,” has been thematic for BTS in many ways. Most significantly, it was written on the chalkboard behind RM in BTS’s “Persona” album trailer.” The way you can deep dive into all the aspects of the way they make MVs… so dang cerebral but also just pure raw emotions.
Vulture magazine asked the top 10 recording engineers the toughest song they’d ever mixed and the BTS recording engineer listed this. You have to listen with headphones but Suga went crazy with sound layering in it so it’s got a crazy number of tracks to put together also that in general compared to others BTS uses often 200 or more tracks and are just always a bear but this one was especially crazy.

  • @faymcdade5156

Hiya John, so glad you reacted to this on Yoongles' birthday 😊 The red stuff around the doors seemed to ref an artwork by Sir Anish Kapoor, called "Svayambh",in which a big block covered in a mixture of red wax & vaseline moved slowly on a rail through a series of doorways in galleries in UK, France & Germany which were smaller than it, so squeezing through meant that parts of the wax were left on the door frames. Fans speculated that it represented that each time Yoongi went up'through another level of fame, it meant he left a part of his true self behind. Another poss meaning is that the word is from Sanskrit meaning "created out of itself" and the colour red to him represented India -when he started using red wax in his work in the 90s it represented "blood, flesh, transfiguration" and " became a metaphor for all emigrations and cultural cross fertilisations...and the melding of Kapoor's Indian, Middle Eastern and British experience" - so it might also rep the coming together of Jung's Persona, Ego and Shadow in a person. Just google "explanation of Suga referencing Anish Kapoor Svayambh" & it will bring up various links if you want to read it up ..and also Koreaboo's article "12 Things You Might Have Missed In BTS "Shadow" Comeback Trailer". I also put highlighted links in someone's prev comment to 2 explanation videos about the MV and Jung's shadow, persona etc.
Btw, have you done a reaction to his "First Love" yet, I can't remember? If not, can you pls do it☺🙏 - it's about his relationship to the family piano and music in general as he grew up and went through his depression etc & makes me really emotional - he said he cried when he recorded it 😢and there's a really heartfelt live performance from their Wings tour, where he had the actual piano on the stage! Thanks and I always really enjoy your genuine, thoughtful reactions 😊👍

As for "Shadow", Suga refers to the shadow I mentioned above - one of the archetypes introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. With Yoongi’s installment of “Interlude: Shadow,” we now have more Jungian themes to unpack, as well as some references to past Bangtan eras and lyrics that discuss one’s duality.
Before getting into the music video and lyrics, it’s helpful to have an understanding of some of Jung’s ideas surrounding the unconscious, the shadow, and the self. Jung believed that beyond our consciousness, a deep unconscious realm exists-a realm in which repressed attributes reside. The shadow, he theorized, contains negative traits we’ve put aside, as well as any traits we learned were not acceptable (even if those traits weren’t inherently bad). The shadow represents the unwanted and undesirable parts of ourselves. Often described as the darker side of the psyche, representing wildness, chaos, and the unknown. Additionally, Jung thought that our consciousness was not the whole of the “self,” and that in order to achieve wholeness and reach one’s true self, one must go through the individuation process. This process requires us to encounter and integrate our unconscious elements into our conscious selves. After a person acknowledges their persona (a social mask we wear to fit in with society), they can move on to their first encounter with the unconscious: the shadow. These latent dispositions are present in all of us, Jung believed, although people sometimes deny this element of their own psyche and instead project it on to others.
Murray Stein, in Jung’s Map of the Soul, writes, “The problem of integrating the shadow is a moral and psychological problem of the most thorny sort. If a person completely shuns the shadow, life is proper but it is terribly incomplete. By opening up to shadow experience, however, a person becomes tainted with immorality but attains a greater degree of wholeness.” Jung believed that shadow integration was difficult and that if someone did not go through this process, the result could be chaos. Stein notes that most people “only reveal shadowy elements by accident, in dreams, or when pushed to extremes.” The shadow exists in everyone, and it influences us from the unconscious. And if we don’t deal with it, we can’t become truly whole. It’s this first step into the unconscious that is expressed through “Interlude: Shadow.”
When they first started out in 2013, all the boys had big dreams. Suga starts off the track by listing his ambitions: "I wanna be a rap star, I wanna be the top, I wanna be a rock star, I want it all mine, I wanna be rich...". Suga raps in an additional verse: "[you have a] big house, big cars, big rings". A similar line appeared in their debut song "No More Dream", but it was the boys saying they wanted these things. This track reminds us of their growth: from merely having these as goals, to eventually achieving them.
When I first listened to this track, I was reminded of a RUN episode when BTS shared poems they had written. This is an excerpt from Suga’s poem: We dreamed of a blue sky, but it is too high up and cold here. I struggle to breathe, and as more light shines on us, it’s only law that the shadows multiply too. There is a price to pay for being in the limelight, and Suga acknowledges it in this track: People say, there’s splendor in that bright light, But my growing shadow swallows me and becomes a monster. The higher one climbs up, the greater the pressure they face (and this applies across any industry).
Yoongi goes on to discuss how his shadow has gotten bigger, which can be understood both as one’s unconscious shadow growing in force and as a description of the shadow BTS has due to the bright light of fame that keeps shining brighter. He describes his shadow following him-whether our real shadows or our unconscious shadows, they’re a part of us we can never escape. He raps, “I’m afraid, flying high is terrifying,” lines that are reminiscent of similar sentiments he’s made in the past (such as in Halsey’s track “Suga’s Interlude”), because we all know that the higher you fly, the further you can fall. He also references the loneliness of being successful and at the top. This can mean many things to each individual, but it’s understandably a nod to how difficult it can be once you reach certain heights. Your life changes forever, the circle of people you can trust dwindles, and the expectations placed on you grow and grow.
He talks about achieving what he wanted, but that the shadow grew in that light, showing both the duality of fame as well as humankind. The descriptions of his shadow becoming bigger and threatening to swallow him resonate with these words from Jung in Psychology and Religion: “Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.”
There’s not much of a resolution for this song, but as it’s an interlude and a representation of the first encounter with the unconscious, there doesn’t need to be one. In “Interlude: Shadow,” Yoongi doesn’t try to hide his shadow but rather embraces it and acknowledges that it’s a part of him. This was one of the main points of Jung’s individuation process-you can’t be rid of your shadow or other unconscious elements, but you can work to integrate them into your whole self and become more harmonious within.

One of the coolest things about BTS for me is how they always talk about unspoken things, raw emotions and conflicts. They are freaking poets.
And the fact that their thought processes have progressed with years. They talked about love and crushes when they were teenagers, now as they are adults, they talk about adult issues. Being in the same age group, i feel like they are like those friends whom we can relate to and grow up with.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUGA! Baby ARMY here so this is my first time seeing/hearing Shadow and LOVE it! OMG!!! Suga's concert is going to SMASH!!! Those of you that get to go, I'm so jelly. Even at 56yrs old I know I would love it. So, I live my life with AvPD which effects me in a way that stifles personal growth and success. It presents itself as me being so afraid of rejection and criticism that I don't want to be seen or have any attention in my direction at all so I avoid EVERYTHING that might bring attention to me. I was devastatingly shy until my mid 20's then learned to mask when I became a mom and I had no choice but to get shit done. I became very successful twice and ultimately crashed each time from the weight of it. I've spent the last several years cocooning myself in apathy and disassociation with no creative outlets or joyous experiences. I haven't listened to music in 10 years. When I found BTS 8ish months ago and began listening to and watching them, I started slowly stretching out, paying attention and caring about the world around me again. It's baby steps and I have a long way to go to feel safe, but now I at least I can see the road ahead and I care that it exists. I still don't know why I was able to listen to their music, when I couldn't listen to anything before but I'm grateful. This song speaks to my experience and I'm so glad you helped me find it. Thank you.

I love this song - The most people only see the light side of showbusiness and tend to forget the fear and pressure an artist has to face especially when they are at the top like BTS. The way Suga is adressing this in this song is really beautiful and sad at the same time. You can actually hear the emotion in his voice.

I always interpreted the hotel corridor as a representation of Suga’s mind. The closed doors open at some point and let all the shadows (fear and insecurities) come out and chase him. Also, the extended version I saw it as a conversation between Suga, Agust D and the shadow. Suga afraid of the lights that cast more shadows and Agust D (the ambitious part of him) telling him “wasn’t this what you wanted?” And then the shadow telling him “hey, I’m not going anywhere. Accept me and embrace me because we are one, I’m always with you” I really love this song. 💜

I love how this song shows the conflicting side of an individual. Suga's shadow represents greed & ambition of which he is having a hard time dealing with afraid that he might lose himself in the process of being a worldwide superstar. But in the end part of the song, Suga's shadow was talking to him saying "I am you, and you are me".

The red stuff on the walls is a reference to Anish Kapoor's art exhibition 'Svayambh' where he slowly sends a block of red wax through an art gallery. As the block moves through the doorways, the force of it changes its shape and leaves smears and gobs of wax behind. It's a representation of how progression can both evolve us and cause us to lose parts of ourselves.

This was supposed to be on the Map of the Soul Tour of 2020 that never happened. They sold out in less than 20 minutes 13 stadium stops across the US and Canada, that they added a few more dates in CA and I think NY and FL. The dates were announced for Europe and tickets were to go in sale in January, and we all know what happened January 2020.
They cancelled the Asian and European dates, but waited as all of us ticket holders did, in hope they would be able to complete the the US leg, and finally cancelled it fall of 2021. Then they announced the PTD concert series in LA for end of Nov/Dec 2021…..I had tickets, but couldn’t go because I was in recovery from life saving surgery. Bummer. Same thing happened with my Vegas tickets. Unfortunately by the time the Vegas tour happened, Ticketmaster had a monopoly on venues and became developed their own scalping division, raising prices as the stadium was selling out in Vegas. They did the same with Yoongi’s concert. Horrible…..
But that doesn’t matter today…Al that matters is it’s Yoongi’s birthday and let’s all hope that Hybe or BH streams at least one of the concerts. If we could all hold hands in a 🙏🏻 circle!
Happy Birthday dear Yoongi! You deserve all the success in the world. You are one of the most talented artists of our time. Don’t ever forget that!❤❤❤❤❤

Interlude: Shadow refers to their pressure in the rising fame. He's terrified as they fly and scared in downfall in just a small snap as the vast audience are watching them. The more fame they have, the more struggle and fall they experience (e.g. paparazzi/ sasaeng fans, privacy invasion, mistakes on stage, etc.). The shadow represents the unwanted and undesirable parts of ourselves.
the reason why I love this track is bcs I really love psychology study. If you want to get to know more abt the song and it's meaning, you can check the Carl Jung's book called "The archetypes of Collective Unconscious" since it's connected to the album.

I believe that the thing on the wall in the music video is inspired by this art installation made of wax by Anish Kapoor called ‘Svayambhu’ (from around 2007, look it up, it’s REALLY COOL). They say that the installation is meant to show the process of what an object undergoes in making itself (in the mv it could symbolize suga the process suga goes through to shape himself as a person).
A koreaboo article quoted Anish Kapoor talking about the installation: “What I did was cast a block of wax and set it on rails and moved it through the building. And it, you know, takes the form of the door. It’s as if the building is some kind of… forgive the phrase, but shitting this thing. Pushing it out. Forcing it.”
That would also explain the rails in the mv. Suga is the block of wax going through door and shaping himself, leaving parts on the walls and door frame, potentially losing some aspects of himself and leaving traces in the process.
There. That’s the answer for “what’s that thing on the wall?” 😂😂😂

The red stuff is wax, inspired by the work of Anish Kapoor. His exhibition consisted of pushing a large block of red wax through doorways leaving residue behind.

Perhaps that as you go through life some parts of you will be “broken off”. (Like the bits of wax on the doors as the big blocks go through them, but that art form will never make a substantial difference to the “body” of wax.) So you may tame/trim away your shadows but never completely be separated from them?

#HappyBirthday SUGA 💜💜💜 One of my favorites of any of Suga's songs.... I consider him as an "old soul" and his way of thinking is so intellectual it shines in is songs. I totally agree with Amberlash... Once hearing this song sent me down the rabbit hole towards Suga and his music just because it resonates with me as well.

Yeah the weird filming of that live performance (as i'm sure you figured out) was because it was cropped from a paid-for content that has never been released for public use. It was one of their live online concerts during covid. The full performance is so good if you ever get a chance to see it!

This is one of my favourite Suga songs I really love it.
This was from their map of the soul : one concert which was an online concert that really replaced their map of the soul tour that was cancelled due to the pandemic. You really need to watch the whole concert (there was 2 days) as both definitely had differences to each performance but when watching live there was the option to change camera views so depending on what the person used might not mean the best camera was used for the shot when the edited it. You can get the map of the soul : one on official dvd and I would highly recommend getting it not only for the concert itself which is amazing but the behind the scene content to. 💜

Yes this song/rap is so good. SUGA is very talented. His birthday live was very good. People in the chat were very nice and asked good questions.....and not just "marry me" or "I Love you". And he was very responsive to the comments. I even think he started playing the guitar because people encouraged him and he just followed along.

This song and Daechwita both came out in 2020. Interlude Shadow in Feb 2020 and Daechwita in May of that year. I think understanding Shadow first helps understanding Daechwita better. That live you saw was an online 2020 pandemic concert. (Would have been a world tour had things gone differently.) #happybirthdaysuga

About the live performance, it was during the Map of the Soul ON:E concert. This was the concert that was canceled due to the pandemic so they did it online instead. There were many camera angles and yes there were somethings happening that they didn’t show in this video you watched.

#happybirthdaysuga Thank you for this reaction! Actually I cannot name a favourite song by Suga because ALL his songs hit really hard. However, I particularly like this song because it seems to me the completion of the thoughts he expressed in his poem in Run BTS ep 56 (at the end each member read the poem they have written for the other members). All beautiful; and Suga's poem concluded: "Though we dreamt of a high sky, it is high here, and cold, and so hard to breathe/ It is true that the more light that burns upon us, the more shadows appear/ What a relief, that we are seven/ What a relief that we are together" Minstradamus indeed! There are so many songs that I'm sure fans are requesting for Suga's birthday week. For something different, may I suggest "Suga's Interlude" which he did with Halsey. V and Jin are my sweet boys but every now and again Yoongi kicks the door down with songs like this, lol!

The red stuff on the wall is inspired by a work of art by Anish Kapoor. It is supposed to represent what you give up on your journey to become what you are, what you have lost on the way up. The mirror scene must be inspired by an installation that I visited in South Korea, I don’t remember which museum, we had to take our shoes off and go in one by one. It looked exactly like the one in the MV, although that one is clearly a movie set.

Map of the Soul is such a powerful series, and I think it did an amazing job showcasing the rap line's individual strengths. Suga gave a taste of the intensity and almost visceral emotion of Agust D, and the catharsis that an artist can give when they draw on the depths of themselves to express what we all share: the raw pain and beauty of being human.

I think he means the more the light, the more the darkness in his life.More popular he becomes, the less freedom he has in his personal life/need for security and body guards. Bright Lights, grow bigger shadows. Like RM talks about the lightness/darknes in all our lives,

One of my favorite songs and another great reaction by you! The red stuff on the wall represents losing a part of yourself as you make choices and achieve goals. There was an artist who made a big, I guess clay block. It was at a doorway on a rail system, and as it went through the door, it would lose part of itself around the door, representing as said. You should check out sugars birthday live. He played the guitar and sang a song to us. I feel like it was a sound from him that we have never heard before. It was amazing! He is so darn talented! Thanks for the reaction.💜

Suga in white, his persona. His public self
Suga in black, his shadow. Inner self. Not public
    Both in conflict.
One wants all, the other rejects all the attention and fame.
In the last scenes he is in black all the time, his shadow fighting to accept the persona. He looks at himself standing on top.
He accepts both his persona and shadow as One and is at peace.

9:24 re: the red stuff on the walls…
shortly after it’s release, I saw some ARMY saw similarity between the red stuff and an art installation from some years ago. I feel that this connection hasn’t really been carried forward and talked about so that post MOTS ARMY can know about it.
    So…
The red stuff on the wall looks similar to an art installation by British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor back in 2007. It involved a huge block of red wax set on tracks that was drawn imperceptibly slowly from one room into another through an arch way. As it passes from one room to the next, the wax block is moulded into the shape of the archway, and also leaves behind a residue around the archway of the first room. The piece was called “Svayambh” which translated from Sanskrit means "created from itself".
Metaphorically, I think the block of red wax represents one’s self, that as we go through life we are shaped by our life events, and that parts of us are left behind. But we can not see the shape we are becoming or what we left behind because it happens so slowly and have to wait until we are through to the other side.
Similarly, I don’t think in the beginning that BTS as a group and as individuals could have imagined how big they were to become, could not see how they have changed over time until now that they have space and distance to look back at it

I think the shadows connects to his fear, hardships, temptations, etc. So pretty much all the "dark stuff". I think his song The Last tells us some of the things he might deal with, or dealt with for example: OCD, Depression, Social anxiety, greed, etc. In The Last it says, "I, thought that success would make it all worth it | But then, but then, | It feels like I’m becoming a monster as time passes | The monster, my success earned at the cost of my youth, wants greater wealth | The greed that used to be my weapon now swallows me, ruins me, and puts a leash around my neck", that is why I say greed. Also, in his song Tony Montana he says, "I want money to chase me | I hope I don't become a monster who chases only money".
@7:53 and @8:06 all the words it says O!RUL8,2? which is one of their older albums. I also think it is referring to the intro song on the album which the lyrics really coordinate with what Suga is saying in this song...Some of the lyrics, "did you enjoy your life | I want to ask why the natural became unnatural | And why the unnatural became natural | Why am I not in my life and in some other person's life? | This is real, it's not a gamble nor a game, it's just one life | Who are you living for? | My heart stopped | when I was nine or ten | Put my hand on my heart and ask what my dream was | Ah, what was it, really?"
Personally, when he is in the hotel room and all the doors open and the people wearing black start running out. I think that the "hotel" is his mind (p.s. I think hotel is a great idea of what the area is supposed to be because like you said when touring besides that stage that is pretty much your home, so that is when you start facing your demons aka shadows the most) and the doors are like different things he struggles with aka shadows "running at him" almost like it is going to devour him...Also, he seems like he is in a hallways, which might be where he either coming from or to a concert so maybe those are times when the shadows come for him the most, maybe???
Anyway, this is my ideas and thoughts and some added knowledge....

Sometimes when we get everything we wanted - we realize that maybe it’s not as good as we thought. Consequences of fame. He said once before too when you are high up (successful), your shadow is also bigger. Your fall can be greater.
