About opera being so inaccessible: Tarja has organized in the past a set of concerts called "Beauty and the Beat" where she performed both classical songs like this and her metal songs. These concerts were always in theatres. The whole point was to invite metalheads to the classical side of music.
We need more artists like Tarja that span multiple music genres!!

Sweden had a crazy opera hype dubbed "the Malena-effect" after the opera singer Malena Ernman won Melodifestivalen with "La voix" and went on to represent us in Eurovision Song Contest in 2009. She's the reason I have a number of operas on dvd, Die Fledermaus being one of my favorites (Malena plays Orlovsky). I've been to a couple of her concerts (same concept as Tarja, classical pieces mixed with pop songs in this case), and she's so funny and laid back. There's a clip on youtube where she wears a dress that is slightly "too big" and she keeps hiking it up during her aria, finally bringing a guy from the audience on stage to hold it up for her. Judging by Tarja's shoulders in this clip I think she would have liked to do the same xD

She was the star pupil at the Sibelius Academy. She was bullied ofc. She's very humble especially with the debacle with NW. She's excelled since parting with Nightwish. I think she has hit a D7? Opera is amazing and opera is a chore. The arias are what I listen to. I had a friend who is a trained opera singer. He actually stopped the vehicle under the underpass one day with sunroof open to show off his ability to sing along with Yma Sumac😳 Johann Strauss is easy to listen to. I speak some German and her diction was virtually spot on.

Imagine singing this insane coloratura aria in the middle of a concert where she also sang Led Zeppelin and Queen medley, musicals, Bach, her stuff, Puccini, etc, etc...her formal training was as a chamber music (Lieder) singer! How brave!!!

I am only a few months into watching/listening to Tarja. Multilinguial for sure. Finnish, German, Spanish ( Italian my guess for opera) and such styles and range. She is happy. She is having fun. She has family and is very wealthy. The lady has it all and lots of people love to hear her sing as much as she wants to sing to us. Thats wonderful. That she is open and generous. She has teamed up for duets with Floor. Best of all her anda Marco have renewed their friendship. It goes back to being single digits in age. Thats awesome. She said it, she got her friend back this year. That is wonderful.

She's really glowing when she sings this! I can see a lot of her personality here. Tarja is like this when she gets on well with an interviewer- smiling and very sweet and charming. And 100% agreed- it's not ok to put down one singer to uplift another. I see this time and again, especially with female singers, and especially with Nightwish. With the singers Nightwish has had, it's like comparing an apple, banana, and a strawberry- all a matter of opinion.

You explained it effortlessly the thing I have tried to convey to all the Tarja haters saying she is a one-trick pony. I hate to say it, but too many people nowadays just see everything in Black and White = Operatic, and nothing else. They are too blind to see all the artistic effects she adds and how she uses her instrument in ways that is MORE versatile than just singing average growls or belts. I think one needs a sense of maturity and openness to appreciate Tarja's talent. Luckily, many do, seeing as she is the Nightwish member who of all has the most successful solo career (Marco, Tuomas and Floor also have solo careers).

omg! this is so beautiful to hear and to see !! I love her voice and the charisma she conveys with her expressions. I always listened to a lot of rock and heavy metal but when I was a little girl I danced ballet. So when I heard the combination of Tarja's voice with metal and heard that symphonic metal, I fell in love with that style. And also listening to Tarja sing opera amazes me. She opened the opera to many people who listened to metal and made it available to many because in those concerts she sings opera and her songs from her solo career. She said that her dream is to sing in El Colón, a great theater in Argentina and recognized worldwide.

She is an amazing lied/chamber singer. I am happy she doesn't stick with Opera or Metal. She expands her range as she expands her vocal versatility. However, her vocals truly shine with chamber music. Her Ave Maria En Plein Air is still her best album vocal-wise, recorded live!
Her Herr Marquis is surprising. The climax needed more ease and control but this is not right for her tessitura. She is a spinto leaning on the heavy side. Her legatto is exquisite, in my perspective, but she lacks the dynamic and the light timbre to make the transition to the high notes with ease but she has such a wide range that maybe she just needs more training to sing such a challenging piece like this.
Regardless, this is outstanding, the way she carries her heavy voice up and down and does the staccatos with so much precision always leaves me gawking.
And she is not an opera singer, she is a lied singer. One must stress that at all times, this aria is extremely challenging, I believe it to be the hardest she has sung to date.
I love Tarja because she reminds me of the truly unique singers of the golden times like Obraztsova. Big dark voices full of emotion that are instantly recognizable even if not precise.

I don’t know a whole lot about classical singing, but I have learned a lot by listening to people like Tarja as well as the great opera singers in the actual opera genre. I have no problem listening to them all day every day. I think what they do is beautiful. That being said I am primarily a contemporary fan. The people who turn away from Tarja because she’s too operatic are definitely closed minded to me. But like you said, they’re not used to it. But that doesn’t give them the right to take away from her and put her down the way that I see many times happening in comment sections.

@@larryzigler6812 She is not that operatic for you and me, but she might be very operatic to almost every other listener, because her classical training breaks through. So even the songs she sings with her "contemporary voice", she sounds operatic to some. And for me, her operatic and mixed voices are the best. I didn't like that they started to went more contemporary style with each Nightwish album after Oceanborn. Or lets just say, that I would have preferred, that she would have sang them more operatic, like she did at live.

Went to a physical therapist - discovered I'd been holding my shoulders up from their natural position - learned to bring them back down to where they're supposed to be - no longer have pain. She may just be holding her shoulders that way because she doesn't realize she's doing it and it became "natural" for her like it had for me.

Fun fact: Finnish national opera (as Tarja is Finnish..) offers near-free shows for small kids. I used to take my daughter to see them put a spin on classic pieces like Carmen, they used everything from silly stage plays to puppet theater. It was brilliant! 😂😂 The shows cost like 10 or 15 euros, and in one 30 minute show you could see stars like Johanna Isokoski up close having fun. 😊❤

As someone that has absolutely no knowledge in music whatsoever and is a big fan of opera (a fan is an understatement:) I have to say that it is not necessary to understand the technique to enjoy the performance. Of course for reason that I don't know I like one performance better than others (probably because of those "choices" you're talking about) but still I can enjoy it very much. Is it inaccessible? hmmm... would not say so! Many places, many opera houses, you can go anytime sometimes at low prices. Is is a little bit elitist? Well yes, but it's a good thing. Not everybody can ba an opera singer, and between them there are also differences in skill and one might consider it as a supreme league. The problem is that people got so used to "shit" music that they treat opera like something strange and weird. well... their loss!

OMG how had I not seen you'd done a piece on this frankly stellar performance?! Aaaagh! This is the ur-fun opera piece to bring non-opera loving people to, it's accessible, it's expressive, it really codifies and *parodifies* the whole Noblewoman's Laugh trope. It's silly, you can get what's going on just based on the vocal tone, and it all makes sense when you think of opera in terms of very, very staid archetypes -- think modern-day sitcom and reality TV tropes and character archetypes, and you're most of the way there! Opera can be accessible, but it does have a bit of a drag factor lol.
So why's her character laughing? It's Strauss and opera at its keen-eyed best in this otherwise scene; the maid character has seen upper class women schmoozing upper class men for year, and knows enough to mossssstttlllyyyy make her way through it, pitch perfect; the wobble is purposeful, to show the character just bumbling along anxiously, and the whole thing is a soft-skills version of the infiltration phase of a heist movie. :D
Also? This is Tarja getting to let loose, relax, and just show off her classical training in a way that seldom comes across purely in her mixed-media efforts (which is... just her whole career). I adore this record and this show because we seldom see her stick to one genre this tightly, and she really does have the voice for all of those acrobatics.

The comment about opera having become an elitist thing brings up something that I've wondered about for years. You as an opera performer might shed some light on this. Namely, who do you think is a greater fan of opera: the rich guy who buys box seats, wears expensive tuxedos, and shows up in a limo, and donates substantially to the opera company, or the blue collar worker who walks to the opera house in blue jeans and work boots, and sits (or stands when there is standing room only left)at the back. I am one of those two types of fans.

So Mahler is the one who started to quiet the audience? My hero! I'm going to find his grave and get flowers there! O! how he is needed in today'a opera houses? I personally hate when people are starting to yell, clapping even whistling when the music/singing is still going on! That's fricking horrible! I did pay for the ticket and I want to here the singing and not feel like in a pop concert! Had to sad it because it's something that is really pissing me off .

I love Tarja and operatic music. The only thing I do not like about this performance and it perplexes me because she is Finnish and Germans are like cousins to them is her pronunciation of the word "Ich". Ich is probably the first word you learn in German (Ich bin, du bist etc)

Finnish language has nothing in common with German. It belongs to Finno -Ugric group of languages and the four largest groups that speak Finno-Ugric languages are Hungarians , Finns , Estonians , and Mordvins .

English comes from German.. Finnish has nothing to do with German whatsoever. Never read such a weird statement. I believe Estonian is the closest. But could be wrong. The are both from completely different groups, Germanic and Finno-Ugric. Besides, you always carry your accent onto other languages like a crutch.

I like Tarja's voice and I grew up with Nightwish while Tarja was still a member. And I do like opera, but I can't listen to it for long. Hurts my ears at some point and I don't know why. Pity. So I do get that comment about not being able to listen to it for long. Does not neccessarily mean that you don't appreciate the music. I guess it's more like eating it for dessert instead of the main course xD

Is this supoposed to be german? I have a rly hard time figuring out what opera singers are singing. Same with "Vilja Lied" by Floor. Oh and I am german. This pure opera sound is just not for me. Just can't understand the words.

    • @NightwishArena
      @NightwishArena 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's because you don't listen to opera. Your ear needs to be trained to hear the words. It is the same thing with metal music. If one doesn't listen to it very often, they usually have hard time to hear the lyrics, especially with harsh vocals/growling/vocal fry. Yes, Tarja is probably far from having perfect German accent, but as far as I know, she is not too bad either. Someone commented not too long ago, that it is amazing how she can be so good on German and Spanish, but she still have so strong accent when she speaks English.

This is German. I am German and I do listen to Opera.
There is some accent but I can understand her just fine. I have heard that piece from different artists of different nationalities and she's doing an amazing job, even though she's not an opera singer (she said herself she'd need a lot of training to sing an opera).
Edit: Tarja did a beautiful rendition of the Vilja Lied as well. And I think her German is even better and the control and space of her vocals as well.

Opera singers do exaggerate and prolong some sounds too, and hate consonants!
So, if you are listening to an aria, even if in your own language, you will find it odd too.
They round all the sounds to project them to the last row. Remember guys, opera used to be for everyone, an entertainment for folks to go and see and enjoy themselves.
      There was no TV.
Also, no microphones and no amplification, all was done with the vocal tract, modern opera singers use hidden microphones to help them sound louder as they are not taught to sing with mixed voice and with core, it is all head voice, no power.
I do second that if you listen to opera on a daily basis, you will understand more and more each day, but that is why there are librettos.
I listen to a lot of metal and half of it is not understandable either if you do not read the lyrics, it is not just a matter of accent at all.

German is her 3rd language. Finnish of course. Finland has about 80% English fluencey. Studied German. Maybe some Italian? For the music. Definitely her husband's native spannish. 4 languges and being from rural Finland much akin to Appalachia in the US they have a thick, distinctive accent that might never go away unless you stick to the one language and practice. Now try doing that AND learning to sing it. Now try learning to sing it not for diction or conversarion or just pop musuc by rote but for accoustic and dramatic effect. Act and sing in a foreign language while reading musical notation.
Now who among us can manage that feat?
Lol. Which is why we will stop, listen and, maybe pay to hear HER do what we cannot. 😊❤❤

Tarja Turunen is a great (but not top level) Opera singer. I think her capabilities are more in their natural habitat then in a rockband. She is more at home here. For a band like Nightwish a singer like Floor Jansen with her much wider pallet is much more in place...

    • @artofstormdancing3319

She is a classical singer, she went school for it. And that is the cornerstone of original Nightwish premise. Nightwist wouldn't be Nightwish without Tarja and the originality of putting heavy and opera together (not just a female singer, but a classically trained one). I don't listen Nightwish nowadays because it misses the operatic Tarja factor.

@@artofstormdancing3319 Well, that is your prerogative. My personal observation and opinion is that (in most cases) the songs or compositions of Nightwish don't really work with Tarja. They don't "flow" in the natural way that they do with Floor. With Tarja it all just doesn't get of the ground.

I guess if Tarja sang this in german, i dont have a native language at all. It is really quite funny to me, that i can understand them better (Tarja and Floor) singing in english than singing in german.
What i consider quite boring about this piece is that it has no tention at least in my mind. What i like the most about Nightwish is that it often seems like Floor is trying to make herself heard, trying to overcome all the metal going on. There is just a different quality to it. Watching this aria is not that interesting to me. I would even go so far to say, that it is quite dull. I have heard this kind of music over and over again.
