I just went through a fitting. The only one of these I didn't hit was the AP3s. I ended up with the Cobra F9 Speedback. They were the longest, straightest, and most consistent of all the irons I hit. I cannot wait till they get here.
Exactly, and I'm a loyal Ping guy. My Pings were stolen, so I tried a bunch, including all 5 of these, and the Cobra F9 and Calloway Big Bertha were equally head and shoulders above the others. Significantly higher and longer trajectories, with long carry and short runout, plus I almost couldn't hit them wrong. While I could hit the others well with a clean strike, they were nowhere near as forgiving. Only problem with the Calloways was they cost 50% more. Then I found out a friend just bought an F9 set for the same reasons, and another friend also came to the same conclusion, except he thought the F9 was better than the Big Bertha. Sadly, I tried the F9 driver, and HATED it. I did get a few good shots out of it, but it was the least forgiving driver I've ever tried. Ping G410 driver came out at the top.
This was great, been searching for "best rated golf irons 2017 golf digest" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Aanraaster Particular Authority - (do a search on google )? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method without the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
This is glorious, I've been looking for "what is the best set of golf clubs?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Aanraaster Particular Authority - (just google it )? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my co-worker got amazing results with it.
Loving the content, James. Reading through the comments, so many people get stuck on the mid/high handicap label and don't bother to listen to the rest of the commentary. Overall, the concept is simple: buy clubs that will help you play better, more enjoyable golf. If you are a 6 handicap because you are proficient around the greens and can drive well but still need help with forgiveness in the irons, these are great options. Same goes for the player who is a 12 because, say, his short game and maybe his driving are suspect but his iron iron striking is really good. Even though he is a mid-handicap these irons may not appeal to him.
I’m a 14 handicap junior whose handicap is constantly dropping and swing speeds ever increasing and I bought a set of jpx 919 forged irons which perfectly fit that gap if ur transitioning into a better player. The also look stunning. Highly recommend
I hit a "7" HONMA TW747 P IRON yesterday and it was very nice. I'm 66 and was hitting it consistently 160 yards I also liked the Mizuno JPX Hot Metal and Tour models. All the club manufacturers have done a great job at improving their lineups making it really difficult to make a decision. Even the Wilson blade was fun to hit and I'm really a mid to high handicapper because I don't play and practice enough. I think how they look at address is important because I am finding your address on each and every shot is so so important. I've been playing about 25 years now and I hit one of my very best bunker shots just last weak. I had been using too much arm and hand movement, IMO, in my chipping and bunker play and I was awfully inconsistent with those shots. It was at least 50 feet from the pin. I stuck it to 3 feet and made the putt for my par 3. I think my address was the key and of course using my torso and arms in sink. While watching the Masters, I just happened to watch Tiger hit a chip shot from maybe 10 to 15 yards off the green and notice how rigid his arms were, keeping the triangle (his chest and arms) rigid, using more his torso to turn and actually make the swing. Now that I tied it and it's working big time to me, it's just a matter of setting up properly and making sure I don't fall back into my old habit. I am hitting chip and bunker shots closer and better than I've ever hit them before. It may not work for everyone but is has been a real game changer for me. Shot a 39 on a 9 hole par 36 that day. Some of you are probably laughing at me for not realizing this sooner. Really never had the extra money to take lessons so all the teachers on TV and TH-cam are my coaches. James is a blast to watch and learn from. Thank you for all your videos.
Mine are winners!! Absolutely love my mizuno jpx-919 hot metals. Went in to be fitted for pings and walked away with these. Feel and look is outstanding. Amazing forgiveness. Go hit them and you'll agree.
Bought my MIZUNO JPX 919 HM PRO irons in July and love them. So easy to hit and added at least 10 yards per iron. Got the graphite shafts at no upcharge. Best irons I have played in over 40 years of golf. Shot 75 yesterday with them. Great Choice!!!
Coming back to golf after 12yrs due to health issues. I loved your and other you tube videos. I am going to a studio tomorrow to get assessment for best clubs for me 63yrs old.
How about a top 5 underrated, or top 5 value for the money? These clubs are crazy expensive. Let's get a look at clubs that the majority of people don't have to go into debt for. Brands like Hogan,Wilson,Srixon,Cleveland, etc...
I purchased the Mizzuno 919 HM irons at the beginning of the year. I was previously playing the Taylor Made R9's. While the R9s were very good when I was playing 3 times a week, when I could only play once or twice a month they became very, very difficult to hit. I am now 54 (old) and again don't get to play nearly as much as I would like. The Mizzuno HM 919's are a pleasure to play with. They are very forgiving and are easily a club or two up in distance. What that means is I previously hit the Taylor Made 9 iron 125 yards, the Mizzuno 919 will easily travel 135 to 140 yards. TM 8 iron 135 yards, Mizzuno 8 iron 150 yards, TM 7 iron 150 yards, Mizzuno 7 165 yards, TM 6 iron 160 yards, Mizzuno 6 iron 175 yards, TM 5 iron 170 yards, Mizzuon 6 iron 185, TM 4 iron 180 yards, Mizzuno 4 iron 195 yards. With that distance your confidence goes up and in turn you hit the ball more consistently. The big separator for me is you have less miss hits, and when you do have a miss hit the result is amazingly different. When I miss hit with the Taylor Made the result was catastrophic. When I miss hit with the Mizzuno the result is not a great shot but it is rarely catastrophic, just a missed green or something. This is the forgiveness part, I play with a group that averages 3 or 4 rounds per week. I however only average 1 to 2 rounds every 30 or 40 days. My lowest round in the last 10 months was 82 at Black Horse GC in Houston TX. the South Course. I consider it very challenging. These clubs have allowed me to play more consistently in the mid 80's only playing 1 to 2 rounds per month. I've been playing for 30 yrs now and that stat is amazing. My mid 80's scores have everything and nothing to do with the Mizzuno irons. My down fall is in my chipping and putting. If I played even twice a week these irons would have me in the 70's easily. I know this because I did it with the Taylor Made's but I had to hit balls at least 3 times per week.
Had a go with the TaylorMade MCGB yesterday at the new British Golf Show at Wycombe air park, I’m off 20 and they felt amazing and I hit the 7 iron and pitching wedges at least 15 yards further than my current set. I booked a fitting for them and/or Mizuno JPX 919 hot metal and can’t wait.
@@Tops1212 I have no gaping problems. Although I was fitted for these clubs. I will say the 5 and 4 iron tend to have a lower ball flight. I believe I will be moving into the forged Tec one lenght irons this year. As my game has advanced to be able to play a players distance iron. I would also recommend the Wilson Duo Professional golf ball with the F9 irons. It's plays as good as a PROv1 just as durable, but is only a 60 compression golf ball. They feel way better off of game improvement irons.
I have been using the Cleveland hb irons. Purchased the mizuno 919 tours. Looking to up my game. I couldn’t believe that the Cleveland’s could out hit them. They did the Cleveland’s are softer through your hands during contact and carry farther
I just traded in the Cobra F9 Speedback for the Mizuno 919 Hot Metal and could not be happier with my decision. These irons inspire a ton of confidence and are so easy to hit. Yew!!!
I purchased a set of these irons. Upgraded from mp 54. I increased the lofts by 2 degrees on each club. These clubs are great for me. They do everything you said in your video. Thx
P790s all the way for me, went from 18 to 12 HCP in one year time. Next goal is single digits at the end of this year! Loving your vids James! You’re the man 💪🏻
Wilson Staff gets no love but they make excellent alternatives and are priced much better than some of these. I currently game Di9's and will look very hard at Staff in the future. They are great clubs.
So glad I got fitted for your number one choice .I love the HM pro .They feel amazing and are hugely forgiving and let's not forget how sexy they look . Fantastic set of irons .
Go Mizuno, just got a 2nd hand set of JPX Ez (2018) only had practice hits but feel really good and hoping to get to mid teens after a few years off of golf, cheers an keep up the gr8 videos, thanks
Those I have tried at the new PGA Superstore here in Austin TX. Really nice, and very easy to hit! I am 62..but don't play as much anymore...old college football injuries, right shoulder, left knee. Plus...I think my wife would object....so I'll just keep my Nike's... they're really nice clubs too.
Wow James. I am so happy to see this video. Some of these irons I would not have put into this category and you did. Gives me hope that I can use some of this technology and not be way over my skis in terms of fit. Glad to have watched.
Over the years I have owned irons from every major club maker. Dynacraft makes an iron head similar to the TaylorMade you rated 1 last year and 3 this year. You can have these custom made for less than $50 a club upgraded graphite tout shafts, the shafts will be spine aligned, your choice of grips, lie adjusted to uptight or flat, with a shaft vibration insert and length adjusted for you specific height and swing. The upside is you can get the number of clubs you want, 6-GW, 7-P or the standard 4-GW, it’s your choice, no buying clubs you won’t ever use. I’m 71, been playing golf nearly 60 years and still carry a single digit index.
I have never considered even hitting a mizuno golf club, however, just because you made it to be number one of the top five, I willing to seriously try them out and might even end up buying a set. I am taking your word for it.
Great information James, loved the bloopers at the end LOL, I was the black P790’s were in black when I was fitted for my M3’s , I have my 2 and 3 irons in the P790 and love them
I went into a fitting wanting Mizuno 919 but ended up getting Srixon z585 and am very happy. 919 HM are great irons but seemed a little too chunky for my liking. z585 seem more streamlined and agile. Both great irons though.
Just played my first 9 holes with the Mizuno hot metals, shot 1over, laser straight, night and day over my old X-20's, still figuring out distances as It's much longer than the old Callaways
Late to the table checking out 2 year old reviews....but got a too good to pass up deal on a set of M6 irons. Even though my previous set for the last 12 years was more of a players iron - I don't find the look of the M6 irons offensive at all behind the ball. I've only had the chance to hit them off mats, and I'm a little concerned about what the turf interaction is going to be like. So far I really like the ball flight with the M6 irons - I've struggled forever with a low trajectory, and was really looking for a club with a low CG that would help me. So far they seem great. I played off a 12 handicap at the end of last season. The goal for this year is to play and practice more and work on getting down to an 8.
Coming from old technology of 2004, testing a set of Cobra F8 and F9 One Length irons really made a difference. Even my not so well placed shots feel sweet off the face, and they are a very straight hitting club. I ended up with the F8s, due to the fact that I got a 5-PW, GW set for under 300 bucks. Was there much of a difference between the F8s and F9s? A little, the F9s were better, but a new set at 800 bucks compared to an on sale price of 284, I think the choice is clear. I'm happy, my scores are happy, and my wallet is happy.
My handicap is 22 and I have moved from Titleist AP1 to Cleveland HB. Fantastic difference. I love them. They are so easy to use. None of the pundits seem to put them in their top 5. Why not? Afraid to go out on a limb or do they think Cleveland don't rate as club manufacturers? What is the point of super slim snazzy looking clubs if you can't score with them.
Mid and high handicappers are two completely different levels of golfers, and their club choices often reflect this. The Cally Apex and Mizuno are more of an iron for a decent mid handicapper, not a high one. Realistically, high handicappers need to look at super game improvement irons, ie Cally Big Bertha, etc, not the Apex or Mizuno. Possibly a video where you can review each level of handicap per intended iron.
There are other variables than handicap tho I could be horrible at putting and driving but strike my irons very consistently and that person can be a high handicap
Quietly thought Mizuno may top the lot when I started the video. Not tried them as I have the Callaway Apex which look wonderful and the feel is even better.
Nice video, very informative. I haven't tried hitting any of the new irons on the market, despite the fact that I worked in a golf shop in the 1990's. But...a shoulder injury and lower back problems have limited my golf the past couple of years. I'll just be keeping my Nike's....I like the extra distance and how easy they are to hit.
This is a fun little exercise! in no particular order: 1) Titleist AP3 (thanks for the freebee! although you know i would have listed them anyway) NOTE: scheduled to be replaced within the next 3 months 2) TaylorMade P790 NOTE: They shouldn't touch these....they are so good already...but i know they will. 3) Mizuno JPX Hot Metal/Hotmetal Pro - NOTE - Either is great but they can be a game changer for some as a combo set. 4) Ping i500 NOTE: just a beautiful iron that is so easy to hit 5) Callaway Apex/Apex Pro NOTE: The Apex is the more forgiving of the 2 but as with the Mizunos, these were designed to be used as a combo set. Game changer that the combo set comes in a unified color scheme! Well.....this video should help you get to 50K!
Am gaming the Mizuno 919 hot metal and they are fantastic. Am still struggling with the long irons but it’s got such a wonderful feel when I strike the ball
Make life easy, drop the long Irons and replace them with Hybrids. Hybrids are much easier to hit and as they launch higher than long Irons you stand a better chance of landing and stopping them on the Green.
If you added a value category, a factor many high handicappers consider important, then the Wilson D300 and Cobra F9 irons would rate highly. If you added ease of hitting the club consistently, the One Length Cobra F9 wins . If I wasn't convinced that for me one length is the way to go, those Mizunos would be on my list of desirable
The Mizuno JPX line is amazing. I am gaming jpx850 forged for a few years now and love them. I would love to try the 919 forged and the 919 tour irons. See if they are better than the 850's.
@@skithewhitestuff I just like the dark almost stealthy look too them also a little different to what most people are playing but as you rightly say it is all down to personal preference, and yes really enjoying them thank you 😁 I went from a beginners set to them so the look and feel are worlds apart
Chris Davis Hi Chris. As a point of interest how are they holding up as far as looks are concerned, as I thought that they may show marks more than regular silver finish clubs? I know what you mean about going from beginner clubs to a better club, you should try taking a beginner club to the range when you go next, it feels very strange going back to hitting the ball with them.
I've went through 3 different sets of irons in the last year.... G30,TM rsi, and old Titleist 822 os irons and I think the old 822s are where it's at for me with old school lofts and oversized heads went for a fitting with them and at 2* flat I can hit my 7i 155-170 and I was getting the same distance with the g400.... Got some low launch DG shafts put in them and I still spray the ball but I think it's all in the head and all irons are fractionally the same just different lofts and means less clubs... Idk what I'm talking about anyway
I have Callaway Rogue Irons now and they are just spectacular for me. I really doubt anything this season could out-do them for me. I usually buy 1-3 year old clubs anyway so maybe one of these sets will be in my bag in 2-3 years lol
I bought a 4 and 7 iron JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro off of Ebay to snack around in the spring. I'm guessing I'll end up with the JPX Forged set and keep the 4 iron.
I would love to see your test the Lynx VT against these, I did I bought them. look like a blade but have hollow cavity (and come in gun metal) very forgiving and keep up with the big boys.
Oh my goodness James. The Apex irons look just the business I liked the look of them in your original test. It must have been a tuff choice not to have that as no 1.
Nice vid James !👌 Went to a Mizuno demo day and went looking at the JPX 919 forged. Eventually got fit for the hot metal pro. They felt good ! I'm around 13-15 right now, have been down to around an 11. My question is, if I'm trying to lower my handicap, would it still behove me to get these ? I'm 62 yrs old and these will probably be my last set ? 🤔😁 I value your opinion. Thanks !
It's 2020 and I'm looking to upgrade from my 2008 Callaway X20's. I'm relatively new to golf as the X20's were hand-me downs. Any advice would be great!
Black irons look great--when new, but like crap after just a year of use. The Apex 19 is a beautiful club, but I think people get too caught up on how they look (and they do look fantastic!). If this is truly about "forgiving irons", I think you would need to consider the Callaway Rogue over the Apex. Yes, thicker top line, chunky, etc., but do you want forgiveness and something easier to hit, or something that looks good in your bag?
Hi Matthew, TH-cam golfers like James only tell you about the top end of the market. If you want to see good reviews Rick Shiels and a couple other TH-cam golfer don't mind promoting Benross and they great golf clubs well made and half the price of top brands. I'm going to test some Benross golf clubs next time I'm in the Uk. Still a lot of snobbery with many golfers who get sucked into buying what they think is the best.
I just went through a fitting. The only one of these I didn't hit was the AP3s. I ended up with the Cobra F9 Speedback. They were the longest, straightest, and most consistent of all the irons I hit. I cannot wait till they get here.

I have never considered even hitting a mizuno golf club, however, just because you made it to be number one of the top five, I willing to seriously try them out and might even
end up buying a set. I am taking your word for it.
Bought a set of jpx 850 forged, currently dropped from 19.2 to 17.5 in 5 months aiming for 14 and division 2 butter soft and big distance!! 👍 👍 👍
What about Cleveland Launcher CBX. Forgiveness, looks and great value.
Great information James, loved the bloopers at the end LOL, I was the black P790’s were in black when I was fitted for my M3’s , I have my 2 and 3 irons in the P790 and love them
Callaway Apex 19 all day long I'm a 17 handicap and the 4 iron is as easy to hit as the pitching wedge love them
Titleist AP3, Callaway Big Berta 2019, Ping G410, Taylormade M6, and Mizuno 919 Hot Metal
Just bought the Mizuno 919 Hot Metals. Today is the first test on the course. Great video James.
My favorite for top forgiving is the Tour Edge HL3 irons, but they never get any love............
Oh yeah. I like those G410s and the P790s. I hit some good looking shots with those irons at a demo day.
Just got fitted for your number one iron for 2019. pick them up next week. handicap of 14.
I'm playing the Mizuno Jpx 919 hot metal Pros and they are amazing. The apex's are incredible as well.
Love the bloopers. I subscribed because of it 😂. Good job
The truth is if you have a good swing all these irons are fantastic. Develop a good swing and doesn't matter what you hit!
You got this list spot on. All those irons look great. I do like the Callaway Apex a lot, need to go try them all.
Why did you not include Wilson D7 irons? They are great for golfers with slower swing speeds. They are also excellent value for the money.
I think that Wilson D7 qualify as beginners SGI
Because he doesn't like them my comment was same as yours that was his reply after insulting me.
They are a great iron
James when it comes to good to very good iron..all depend on the right shaft..and you must be fitted..
For the money AP2 and callaway pro
This is a fun little exercise! in no particular order:
1) Titleist AP3 (thanks for the freebee! although you know i would have listed them anyway)
NOTE: scheduled to be replaced within the next 3 months
2) TaylorMade P790
NOTE: They shouldn't touch these....they are so good already...but i know they will.
3) Mizuno JPX Hot Metal/Hotmetal Pro -
NOTE - Either is great but they can be a game changer for some as a combo set.
4) Ping i500
NOTE: just a beautiful iron that is so easy to hit
5) Callaway Apex/Apex Pro
NOTE: The Apex is the more forgiving of the 2 but as with the Mizunos, these were designed to be used as a combo set.
Really enjoyed that review 👏👏and we definitely need to see more bloopers 😂😂
If you added a value category, a factor many high handicappers consider important, then the Wilson D300 and Cobra F9 irons would rate highly. If you added ease of hitting the club consistently, the One Length Cobra F9 wins . If I wasn't convinced that for me one length is the way to go, those Mizunos would be on my list of desirable
The Wilson C300 forged should have definitely been on the list.
Could* I’m happy with my list. Great that they would be on your list though
The Mizuno JPX line is amazing. I am gaming jpx850 forged for a few years now and love them. I would love to try the 919 forged and the 919 tour irons. See if they are better than the 850's.
Great video looking forward to the beginners irons video currently playing of 47 need as much help as possible only 8 rounds under the belt
Is it just me but do all clubs look better in black ?
Loved the Apex when I tested them added loads of distance and felt great
No, it’s just you. I much prefer the chrome look of an iron, but it’s good to see the finish options available.
@@skithewhitestuff I'm probably a little biased I bought the Cobra Torged Tec Black not long ago 😁
Chris Davis It is a matter of preference but I can understand why you like them, I must admit that they do look good. I hope you are enjoying them.
I got the apex forged , i tried the Mizuno, but just lived the feel of the Callaway. It was close .
How about the Wilson D7. Fantastic value
That’s what I have and they are amazing, I play off a 10 handicap.
He doesn't like them only like the big names
wilson clubs are shit
I've went through 3 different sets of irons in the last year.... G30,TM rsi, and old Titleist 822 os irons and I think the old 822s are where it's at for me with old school lofts and oversized heads went for a fitting with them and at 2* flat I can hit my 7i 155-170 and I was getting the same distance with the g400.... Got some low launch DG shafts put in them and I still spray the ball but I think it's all in the head and all irons are fractionally the same just different lofts and means less clubs... Idk what I'm talking about anyway
Ben hogan frt worth. And wilson D300
Yep, absolutely love my HM Pros
I have Callaway Rogue Irons now and they are just spectacular for me. I really doubt anything this season could out-do them for me. I usually buy 1-3 year old clubs anyway so maybe one of these sets will be in my bag in 2-3 years lol
Loved the Taylor Mades and Mizunos, but landed with the Srixon 585's - such a great set, but would have been happy with any of these.
I love the Mizunos. Looks are incredible. I’m currently gaming Titleist 981s. I need an upgrade lol!
Love my P790s!!! Very deserved to be on the podium!!
I bought a 4 and 7 iron JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro off of Ebay to snack around in the spring. I'm guessing I'll end up with the JPX Forged set and keep the 4 iron.
Mizuno JPX 919 forged, Ping g410, TaylorMade p790, srixon 585
I would love to see your test the Lynx VT against these, I did I bought them. look like a blade but have hollow cavity (and come in gun metal) very forgiving and keep up with the big boys.
The most forgiving iron is Cleveland HB Launcher now the turbo and what about Wilson D7 . The prices are pretty good too you must test these irons.
Cobra F9 or Miz Hot Metal then Ping 410 , Titleist AP1 or AP3 , TaylorMade P790 are my Top 5 wants
I tried the Ping 410s and the Mizuno JPX HOt Metal. Bought the Mizunos.
I got the apex at the start of this year, hate them! Saving for a new set to start the 2020 golf season
Great video James, these are gonna be my next irons👍
I would bet my life that Cobra One Lengths have taken more stokes off of mid to high handicaps than any of these irons.
Are they good for high handicappers?
I loved the bloopers at the end lol.
Clearly never tested Epon AF-505. Spectacular
Oh my goodness James. The Apex irons look just the business I liked the look of them in your original test. It must have been a tuff choice not to have that as no 1.
Mizuno,Ping ,Callaway,Taylor made , Cobra .
These aren't in the video but my Wilson Staff D7's are coming this week for the money they're highly underrated!
Totally agree with your top three.
Nice review James. Top of the morning from the states.
You not only missed the boat, you missed the ocean not selecting the Srixon X585, My second choice was the Apex, 3rd the Mizuno forged.
As I said Jim I’ll be covering those in another category. Totally agree with the black
Titleist are great but they get scratched up pretty quick. Outside of that, they're brilliant. :) Great video Robbo! :)
Just another golf site for men. Best to leave the women at home where they belong Right?
Christine
@@christinetciosek6374 huh
That trough a spanner in the works ill defo trying these great vid
Benross I think they are super forgiving 🤷🏾♂️
Hi Matthew, TH-cam golfers like James only tell you about the top end of the market. If you want to see good reviews Rick Shiels and a couple other TH-cam golfer don't mind promoting Benross and they great golf clubs well made and half the price of top brands. I'm going to test some Benross golf clubs next time I'm in the Uk. Still a lot of snobbery with many golfers who get sucked into buying what they think is the best.
No he only like big names clubs
Unsubscribe I did because he doesn't like feedback about his reviews
Try honma 747 vx🏌️🚀
I tried the g410s but I found the g700s easier to hit, longer and straighter.
The most forgiving blade type iron....
Ping i500.
Well good info, but no mention of Hogan Edge or new PTx Pro
I’d love to get the JPX Hot metal pro to replace my MX200.
Odd that all of them are high end (price wise) names! I’m sure the appreciate the advertising.
Black finish, chrome finish, both? I can play a mixed bag, what about ya'll?
