I got fitted for clubs last week and I hit majority of all these irons but I kept going back to the AI Smoke. It just stood out and felt the best! Can’t wait for them to come in so I can tryin the course!
I'm a high handicapper. Last year I shot as low as 90 and as high as 119 on an easy course. Even at my level I can appreciate the feel of one of my well struck Mizunos!
Adding Joe to the staff was a great decision. For this review, I appreciate that he gave credence to being open-minded to brands. It points out that we've never had so many good choices in clubs.
I took up golf in the 1980's when a 6 iron had about 30° of loft.Manufacturers have lowered the lofts over the years, so that a 7 iron is now closer to a 5 iron back then.Of course the ball goes further, but we now have to buy a gap wedge because the pitching wedges have too big a gap between them and the sand iron. Good business and more profits for the manufacturers..
Great video. I play the Cobra F9 one length irons(personally going to the one length irons my handicap went from 18 to 11.6-12) and the shaft on my sand wedge cracked and splintered so I went and got fitted for the one length dark speed irons even though I am only buying the sand wedge the fitting detailed what I need when I go with the rest of the set. If anyone was considering one lenght irons they should go try them. Consistent ball position is a game changer. As far as distance I am 64;years old and hit the 7 iron 160 yds and the sand wedge 100 yds. No distance loss compared to my old Mizzuno’s. I did hit the dark speed one lenght iron 5 yards further on average and hit one 174. These irons go along way and nice feel.
I'm using the Cobra Radspeed and have no plans to change. If I had to pick one from this test it would be the WIlson - because it made a solid performance here and I'm cheap. Really, the Wilson is just over HALF the price of the Ping and Titleist making it the value king.
Considering the ridiculous price of the titleist and that the performance is virtually on par with a Wilson Dynapower and the best value that the Wilson brand offers, I think it’s a clear winner. Why would you pay all that money for one or 2 yards more distance when the Wilson offers everything on the table for a fraction of the price? The dark speed is OK but compared with all others.
Well they are expensive the Titleist is 2 full degrees less lofted and still 2 yds farther carry??? That's actually fairly substantial when you go spec for spec but Wilson makes a damn nice and much more affordable iron and truthfully their blades are most years the sexiest clubs on the market
I would agree with performance and overall pick. I was fitted for the Darkspeed irons and it gives me such protection on those right shots. I agree with the way the look from the top. That darker color does make the top line look small and I do like that it looks like it has less offset. And they really do look so slick. Close second for me was the T350,
@@andybt3989 mine have a few marks but not any worse than my old M6 irons which marks badly too. I did hit my 7 iron on a bolt holding down the mat at a driving range and nicked the bottom towards the heel. Doesn’t look great but it’s not horrible either. I figure any golf club that impacts the ground and dirty golf balls will get marks.
Wow! Best review this year Joe on untuned very thorough and extremely interesting. I’m trying various irons in this category and lucky enough to be testing at my club and also manufacturers days at my club. So far tested G430, Callaway smoke, Qi, and T 350. My favourite so far the T350 fabulous looks and feel and the numbers really stacked up. I like tungsten I’m a big fan and this iron has nearly 100 g double any competitor and it’s forged only Srixon ZX4 also forged. Downside price I suppose but would like to test Cobra and Wilson as you know I’m a big fan of Wilson and that price is a bargain today. Interesting to know that Wilson will be bringing out the Dynapwr forged iron. So hope you will test that one! Once again fabulous review Joe really enjoy your reviews always fun but detailed.
I was buying new irons for this season and it was between the T350 and the PXG Gen 6. After hitting them both extensively, I choose the PXG Gen 6. A truly great club.
I play the i230s but every time I hit the G430s, I wonder why they aren't in my bag. I've tried game improvement irons before and had trouble stopping them on greens, but the Ping spins.
I don't think hitting a 7 iron 190 yards is evidence you are in the game improvement crowd. You need old guys to hit those clubs. We are the ones who move to those types of irons.
So difficult to go apples for apples with these considering the varying degrees of loft??? I Hit them all for hours a few days ago and what I found to he the best overall were the Ping G430 with incredible feel/sound and dispersion and the 923 Hot Metals. So you said the ball was so long and powerful on the Cobras?? Well it is a yard longer than the Ping but is also 1.5° stronger loft. So the ball speed is lower in the Ping than most but it's also got the highest degree of loft and carries farther than most??? Its all really tough but I feel that industry wide the push was to get these clubs into a smaller and more traditional profile and although they all look great it will be interesting with them being smaller with less offset if they actually help the target audience??? Great breakdown and iam not sure where you are but man is that a beautiful backdrop
You've GOT to try the Honma TR21x. I've got the JPX 921 pros on 950 GH S shafts and PXG Gen5 0311Ts on Project X LZ S shafts. I put SteelFiber 110CW S on the TR21x heads, and they are the most phenomonal feeling, bar none, that I've ever hit. Dispersion is about what I get from the 921 Hot Metals, and a little wider than the PXGs... and I don't care a whit!
I wished you touched on the feel of the Titliest T350 which you noted earlier in your clip that it as your favorite. I was always curious how the feel of that iron was in your expert opinion.
fairly new to the game, and my 7 iron is only 125 yds.. 190 would be a dream. playing my cobra speed zones, for now. a joke of numbers I know, but one thing is certain.. I will choke most ppl out, on the mat in under 20 seconds all a matter of time spent in your sport. thx for the vid
Thanks for the video. I like that you have carry distance, but something I would like to see is total distance. I want something with more stopping power around the green and I can’t see that from your video
The 7 iron lofts are all strong. I have a slow swing speed and have been told these type of lofts are too strong for me to get decent carry. Any suggestions on other irons please?
Hey Joe, I lliked the review. Different golfers have different biases on every category. I tend to go with fitters recommendation, but I am a bit of a brand snob!
Not understanding why these irons are for "mid to high handicappers." I'm a 7.2 hdcp, and play the Callaway Rogue ST Max OS irons. I hit them where I want them to go. I love the feel of them. I can draw, fade, punch, flight them, etc. Not sure why they're marketed to high handicappers. They just make golf more fun. I used to play blades. Nope. I like these more.
I either have a set of some of these or ordered a 7 iron for testing. I have to strongly disagree with your top performers based on spin numbers. This is one of my biggest issues with game improvement irons when it comes to holding greens, especially during the warmer months of the year when the greens become firm. I agree that the JPX923 have the nicest feel, but unfortunately for me, I did not get the performance some of the others provided. I was also not able to get good performance from the Darkspeed. This may be that I just don't have the swing speed to get the performance that you saw. For me, the best performers are the G430, Titleist T350, and Callaway AI Smoke. I play the 350 and G430 interchangeably at home and have a set of the Callaway AI Smoke HL's at our home in Palm Springs. Switching between these sets is quite easy because the performance is so similar. If I had to pick just one, it would probably be the Titleist T350's because they just have such great balance and feel. Appreciate the video.
You’re right Paul, it’s not for everyone but it performs well. DarkSpeed will work well for most speeds in my opinion. While strong lofted, they launch well so slower speeds wonts struggle in my opinion 😊
This is not my photo. I have been playing Callaway x-22s for 15 years and got down to the low 70s with them as a part time, weekend golfer.. My driver distance is good, so is my fairway woods and hybrids, but my long irons are shorter. So I am thinking it’s shaft weight b eing 105 grams on my long irons. I looked at all the clubs here and really wanted to like Stealth….but I like compact heads better. I liked the way the original Air X cobra irons felt……but of the new ones….I liked Paradign smoke…..older Apex……but in the Titleist, I like the 150 heads……much more than t-350. I like the Srixon , but they are expensive and the players Titliests have heavy shafts, not lighter. I like Mizunos….too……but what I am considering doing, is putting True Temper AMT shafts in my x 22 Callaway irons, so the short irons are heavier……so I don’t pull them…..and the 5 and 6 irons are lighter. And I bought Tommy Armour irons from Dick’s sporting goods, on sale for $299. They actually have more compact and less offset heads than my Callaway x 22 irons…….and if I don’t love the new irons. I decided paying a lot less for irons I don’t love but don’t dislike is better. Darkspeed stock shafts turned me off……I didn’t like it enough to pay for better shafts// I still am thinking Takomo golf or PXG, but I think the AMT blacks would work to still use my old clubs, as I transition to 85 gram shafts in the future. I turn 64 years old next week…..and got to a point where I almost always break 70 in golf…..by eliminate errors, hitting fairways……and getting good at chipping and pitching and putting. I am a good putting day away from breaking 70, but I don’t play that often and still need help with the clubs
What's the best bang for buck/budget game improvement Iron set folks?. I'm not concerned which brand as I'm returning to golf after 12 years and don't want to spend a bomb. I'm looking at getting best value for the money with feel distance and forgiveness .Thanks in advance.
T350 and dynapower were the two best iron sets I hit. Virtually no difference after hitting 8 of these 10 irons on this list. Those 2 stood out on the data. I let price be the determining factor for my personal choice.
It completely depends what you’re looking for. If it’s simply launch, spin and height then yeah. However I factored in everything such as workability, performance from different lies etc. Golf isn’t all about launch monitor data, there’s more to it than that 👍
Let’s put this video into perspective. This is one man’s opinion. You are not him , so may I suggest that when you get prepared to purchase your clubs , you swing these clubs and then let the clubs pick you . The clubs will tell you which ones are designated for your game.
@@joeferguson8911 It’s a setting, just like loft. Saying that a bias is a performance characteristic is like saying that right-handed is a performance characteristic. I
Ok, I understand your point, but to me CG location would be the setting and the flight bias would be the performance characteristic that creates. All down to interpretation I guess. Thanks for watching 👍
I enjoy your reviews Joe, but to select a best GI iron based on your fast swing (which is great by the way), is flawed. Very few of the people who would potentially look to buy these clubs will have your speed, so won’t generate enough launch, spin or descent angle.
Have a look at video by New Nine Golf. In the latest video he fits his 18 handicap, 60 odd year old dad for new irons. Not all the clubs mentioned here are on show, but some of them are, and the results are interesting.
@@geoffhiggins742 yeah I already watched it. Annoyed he didn’t try the extra light graphite shaft on the Mizuno HL’s. They might have gone further then and ended up in the bag
So is anyone ever going to let high handicap golfers hit GI clubs on the range and find out what they think? Do you think it’s helpful for a 20+ watch a single digit golfer tell us which GI club we should hit
Why Does Callaway always use the shiny metal look on their irons personal preference? I do not like that. The sun reflects so hard off of that and bright.
I wish people would review these correctly as whom they are intended for . Mid to high handicapper do not swing at that speed. Do not have a 3 to 4 down attack . If you went to 80 to 85. -1 to 2 attack angle and probably a lot of slightly fat and thin shots . Spin . Peak height and decent would be unusable on golf course
I appreciate your point Colin, but I feel I have taught, fitted and played with so many people that these are intended for that I can make a pretty good call on what will work in this category. I see where you are coming from though 👍
for players with an average swing speed would you recommend stopping at the 6 or even 7 iron with the Darkspeed as they would not have the speed to launch 6 and 5 irons at 24 and 21 degrees. Carry distance and decent angles would be very low. i thnk a better option would be a blended set. Maybe Srixon ZX4 - 6 to 8 iron and ZX5 - 9 to Gap wedge. You get all the forgiveness in the long irons and feel and control in the short irons. so much more useful even for a high handicapper
Game improvement clubs review by a pro or a scratch golfer is of little use for us mere mortal high handicappers, unless an average golfer is the one hitting the balls in the test. Look, dispersion and price in that order should be deciding factors to choose which club to buy. If you don't like what you see, there's no sense of happiness using it. One can get used to the feel and sound, and one can adapt to the loss of a few yards distance. But I'd prefer to hold a beautiful club 18 more times per round any day!
All this noise (hype) about using AI to determine where the ball strikes are in these thousands of real golfers shots, makes me wonder what on earth was the approach they were using previously. Were they just focusing on center strikes and therefore ignoring those that weren't therefore favouring perfection over forgiveness?
Looks are subjective but that cheap plastic badge in the back of the Titleist is unforgivable. You can see its attracted deep scratches already. Fine if you change your irons every other year but not great if you plan on keeping them for a decade.
For high handicap guys wanting game improvement clubs they aren’t interested in the pro golfers disliking the look of a club and then giving negative opinions
I went for a recent fitting and yes Titleist T-350 & T-200 ( mix ) was my first choice in the category golf improvement ( not getting any heights) before getting on the dance floor. Oh boboy ! Was Greatly Disappointed with capital G / D….🥴, not the quality sound and no butter feeling at all. Even if I’m a 17 handicap the T-200 felt better. Tried TM Stealth HD😢, Big Bertha B-23 😢, That’s the side affect of big push’s by those pedlars called > they’re polluting the web. Anyway I picked to my surprise Callaway Smoke Paradym HL irons irons 6- aW ( gap W ), Ping G-430 LST 9* set at 10.5*, fairway woods : Max3-D H , Max D 7&11 Happy choice. ErEf
TM not even in the top 6 of peak height, spin or carry! ALL of those qualities in a game improvement iron are critical!. TM pay for this vid or what? And the Cobra is a 6 iron loft on most golf sets on this planet with low spin, low launch. Lets just say this is your fav irons vid and not an everyday mans game improvement comparison test!
Strong lofts indeed, but the launch is still there. It’s not all about data either… I try to take a holistic approach and factor in everything including feel, looks, workability etc. All subjective though and everyone will have their own opinion, this is only mine!😬
…and it depends what you are looking for if Ping wins the data battle too… If it’s launch and spin then yeah, that would be a great option. We all value and need different features 👍
Ok swinging at tour speed but this is the game improvement category. No consideration for the people that will most likely be using these clubs. I hate to critique but this review needs improvement!
I enjoy reviews like this, especially when they're for regular golfers. Cobra makes good clubs.

Not a mention for the two cleveland options? Seem to perform well for a sharp price
Wonder what the difference carbon shafts could do to increase the spin for the darkspeed. Big cobra fan myself
I have received my Wilson Staff Dynapwr forged 5-GW and can say im over the moon with them.
Wilson Dynapower are fantastic!
Yeah, strong product and well priced 👌

Let’s put this video into perspective. This is one man’s opinion. You are not him , so may I suggest that when you get prepared to purchase your clubs , you swing these clubs and then let the clubs pick you . The clubs will tell you which ones are designated for your game.
Why do you never mention the grips?? To me they are important.
XXIO should be part of your test
It isn’t a none biased review , who paid the most ?
Was it a flash auction on the highest bidder
Alex Elliott tested the Cobras and they marked up badly after only a few hits.
Im at the golf store anyone have any ideas for a set
I thought the ai smoke looked great but ill stick with my p770s
What does draw bias have to do with "performance." I don't think that the word "performance" means what you think it does.
Draw bias is a performance characteristic 👍
@@joeferguson8911 It most certainly is not.
What would you describe draw bias as then Marcus?
@@joeferguson8911 It’s a setting, just like loft. Saying that a bias is a performance characteristic is like saying that right-handed is a performance characteristic. I
Ok, I understand your point, but to me CG location would be the setting and the flight bias would be the performance characteristic that creates. All down to interpretation I guess. Thanks for watching 👍
titleist t350/200 hybrid set. Nothing comes close to it.
G430?
No Takomo 101’s?
Fortunately 😂
Hard to agree with your performance findings. 90 ft height and 5k spin means you better be hitting into a mud pond if you want to hold the surface.
@1:13 my wife describing my little guy.
Wear sunglasses 😮
Fine if you change your irons every other year but not great if you plan on keeping them for a decade.
why does nobody ever test and compare Ben Hogans in these best of videos?
For high handicap guys wanting game improvement clubs they aren’t interested in the pro golfers disliking the look of a club and then giving negative opinions
Im sorry but the highest bidder won this, Cleveland ziocore was in the top 3 of almost every category and didnt even get a mention. Rubbish
In Australia -
Dynapower = $90 each
T350 = $320 each
🤔
Wow
I went for a recent fitting and yes Titleist T-350 & T-200 ( mix ) was my first choice in the category golf improvement ( not getting any heights) before getting on the dance floor. Oh boboy ! Was Greatly Disappointed with capital G / D….🥴, not the quality sound and no butter feeling at all. Even if I’m a 17 handicap the T-200 felt better. Tried TM Stealth HD😢, Big Bertha B-23 😢, That’s the side affect of big push’s by those pedlars called > they’re polluting the web.
Anyway I picked to my surprise Callaway Smoke Paradym HL irons irons 6- aW ( gap W ), Ping G-430 LST 9* set at 10.5*, fairway woods : Max3-D H , Max D 7&11
Happy choice.
ErEf
The finish on that Cobra is horrid. Thats going to look terrible after a year of use
Give me a set of Tour edge irons for $ 400 less any day
TM not even in the top 6 of peak height, spin or carry! ALL of those qualities in a game improvement iron are critical!. TM pay for this vid or what? And the Cobra is a 6 iron loft on most golf sets on this planet with low spin, low launch. Lets just say this is your fav irons vid and not an everyday mans game improvement comparison test!
The stats for these clubs are useless no high handicapper will hit them like you?
Looking at the data the ping won by a mile. The cobra has 27 degree of loft? Are you kidding me, would not go near it.
Taylor Made all day long!!!!!!
Professional golfer testing doesn’t work for me.
