I'd say you're a minute too soon. the groove that starts at 22:20, which is in TSRTS album/film version of the song, is killer, until it kind of falls apart at around 23:00. You can hear at that point they hand't quite worked out the perfect transition to the next groove section yet, but they did by the time they hit NYC. But that one groove there was up there with the best of the jams.

I love the ‘California’ section so much; full of drama, energy and motion. When Gods walked the earth…

It's almost criminal that stuff like this will never have a "professional" release. I wouldn't mind if Jimmy dropped it all one day, each concert was different and I will never get tired of LZ.

There are some similar things that the band had done on this performance of the song when they had performed it at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the film “The Song Remains the Same!!!”

Really clear mix , bass quite audible , drums nice and loud - Plant and Page on top as always . Pretty great .

Amazing version, but still short of the MSG version, especially the original TSRTS album recording, not the one tied to the film where some of the funkiest grooves and solo parts were butchered to have visual continuity. Bonzo in particular didn't do any of the pull-outs/stops at MSG he has here and the bass and drums in general are just way more locked on the album version (partly no doubt because the EQ/production was way better so it sounded more together. Still, it seems either they simply hit an absolute peak those nights in NYC, or knew they were recording so keep it a bit tigheter, or there was a lot more postproduction going on to edit out anything that didn't kill in the song and strengthen any weak parts than I would have imagined because it seemed so seamless on the album. Either way, this is a pleasant surprise to see Jimmy sounding more or less as insane as he did on TSRTS album.

The original TSRTS album is full of edits and overdubs. You have to remember that it's a sound track, not really a live album. Jimmy could never just leave anything alone. He was a producer and he had control of everything that came out. That's why these bootlegs are great because we get to hear true live Zeppelin blemishes and all.

@@johns7097 that might be for the actual guitar solos, but the grooves and call and responses with JPJ and Bonzo couldn't be overdubbed; they had to be there to begin with. I think by the end of the 73 tour they were at the absolute height of their powers. There is a collection of MSG bootlegs from those dates that one can compare TSRTS to and see what was changed in post-production. I did it once and I was surprised how little was changed. Page never sounded this good again, sadly.

Yes, they were at their live peak in 73, this is an amazing performance. Have you ever checked out The Garden Tapes site? They break down to the second the edits and changes between all the versions.

yeah that's what I was talking about. Thank you for reminding me of the name. It's definitely a fun way to pass a couple hours if you're a Zep fanatic. I think the original album/ soundtrack recording of D&C as well as no quarter and Sibly hold up pretty darn well. I'm placed against the unedited/ raw recordings. But I'm happy to be corrected (well I guess I'd be sad to be corrected, but I'm certainly willing to be...).
