  • Finding the best pastel paper can be hard so in this comparison I'll look at two market leaders, Velour and Pastelmat. I'll show you how well they take pastel pencils, how easy it is to blend pastel pencils and how to add details.

I like both, but I find the velour actually looks more realistic because even though it doesn't quite have the really fine details of the pastelmat version, the feel of the drawing is different. The shadows just look so good.

You're so right! They both look real but in different ways...I swap and change between which I like more!

I love them both equally, but for different reasons!! The velour version is so painterly and soft, and the pastel mat one more photorealistic, I think. I'm excited to try the velour--already have some on order! Thanks for sharing!

I only use Velour paper and my results are fast and beautiful using PanPastels for my underpainting, then pastel pencils including Derwent and Faber Castell and I use NuPastel by Prismacolor for the super bold and bright colors (the black and the white is amazing) or for super fine lines. Nothing else compares to the results I get using this combination.

Never thought I'd say this as I've never had much success with velour but I think the velour was the best! Maybe I'll dig mine out from the back of the cupboard and give it another go😊

The velour has a softness to it that is appealing, but when compared side by side with the Pastelmat, I would choose the Pastelmat every time for the richness of color and the how the details stand out. I think the final choice would depend on the mood you are trying to create. For realism, the Pastelmat, but for a bit more ethereal version, the velour sure is beautiful. Great video!

I agree totally with you. I liked the softness of the velour, it has less of that photographic look.

So interesting to know about the various pencils on velour I've used velour with varying results - I think you've given me the answer. Thank you so much - I think both works great - maybe stronger colour on Pastelmat which I like.

I think its a wash. A client not having comparison would think both beautiful. I think the softer look would be well suited if the personality fit and fur and shorter hair stronger angles in a breed the PastelMat. Getting tired of paper prices and pastel hikes so considering looking into velour and using Carbathello Conte’ etc. Love the rich shadows in velour.

I think they are both great and the merits being what efect do you want. For a sharp crisp finish with lots of details the Pastelmat is great. The Velour gives a dream like finish and I think would be great for very young or more mature pets. Very interesting.

    • @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
      @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nice perspective...the velour gives a subject a very pensive feeling. But you do need the right photograph to work with which can be tricky for pet portraits. Nice to have both papers!

I haven't tried the velour paper yet but it does look similar to suede mat and if it is, I really like using that. I've tried pastelmat 3 times and each time it quickly went south and I never got a finished product from it. I know it has a huge following though so maybe someday I'll master it and jump on the pastelmat train. 🙂

I know the feeling...It was a painful moment when I bought three new brands for a new 'cheap' pencil comparison video (coming out soon). I quite like to collect individual pencils as I go along. It's much cheaper and gives you a feeling for each brand and which one you might want more of.

From the two time-lapses you have shown, I definitely prefer Pastelmat, though (IMHO) you are not so comfortable with Pastelmat and work on it the same as you do on Velour.
I strongly recommend you to watch the videos of Dave Porters Art channel and see how he works on Pastelmat. I personally have learned a lot from Dave, and honestly, I have never seen anyone else with such expertise of drawing with Pastel Pencils on Pastelmat.
Once again, I appreciate all your time and effort for making this video.

Wow thank u for making thia video. i was able to use both of these 2 papers i would say they both have pros and cons. when it comes to pet portrait pastelmat is better choice but since im a human portrait artist i do love velour also.velour loves softer pastel that is why fc which is a harder pastel is not match with it.kohinoor pastel pencil match with velour that is also cheaper than the carandache.but in the end it will still depend on thw artist on how can she/he maximize the potential of the paper.like Emma Colbert she use more of velour on pet portraits.but i think the larger size will be much easier to make fur details

  • @francescacatlow

They are both fabulous but I think I prefer the velour version. I have tried velour and created a kitten on it but used too much soft pastel sticks and the pastel fell off when I took it to the framer, creating a ghost image on the glass! Amusing, but not so much after all the effort I went to. SInce then I have not used velour but I have a piece waiting for an owl portrait that is so beautiful and full of shadows. I am just scared to try again. I have been using Pastelmat all the time for my pastels and mostly have been successful with this. I love your art, and just wonder do you ever paint using an easel? I find it tricky for details
