Absolutely beautiful, you are so talented and thank you so much for sharing your skills and techniques. They are super helpful and I’m really enjoying your patron and it’s amazing 🙌😍🎓🫶💕
Thank you for this video. I had purchased a couple pads of the Clairefontaine PaintON to play with but haven’t decided what to do with them. Now I feel inspired to try my pastel pencils on it. I am also wondering how it will handle colored pencils.
Oh my goodness, how beautifully done! Just found you by chance, you now have a new sub. Thank you so much for sharing. Absolutely gorgeous! Lynda 🧚🏼♀️💕
Thank you Zara! You are very articulate and easy to understand your instructions! I love how you explain the whys along with how! I’m very grateful for your generosity in helping!
I only work with soft pastels and do abstract art. I use Canson Mi-Tients top side, along with paint store 500 grit wet/dry sandpaper. I've been trying out another Canson paper XL Dry Mixed Media. All have been fine for my style. I do not use pastel pencils though.
Thank you for your great explanation and video! I see you use many blending techniques. Fingers, cotton buns, brushes and maybe more? Could you explain me a bit when you would use which blending method? Thank you!
Thank you. So pleased to hear that ❤️. This is a great question. And it really depends on what effect I'm going for and based on this project the paper that I'm using. Pastelmat requires more blending techniques and more layers to achieve the softness which is ideal because that helps to increase depth and realism so for that paper I'd be using sponges for base layers, possibly my finger for the next 2 or 3 layers because in most cases there I just want to soften rather than blend and the cotton buds are more for smaller delicate areas. I won't use a cotton bud for later layers of blending as they can slightly move the the pastel around to much. I personally never use paper blending stumps in my pastel work because I really dislike how they actually disturb the pastel and lift it off and push it around. I've just personally never liked the results they give in my work. But majority of the time I use the pastel pencils themselves to blend and soften layers and details =)
Currently drawing on this Clairefontaine PaintON mix media paper and just finished the background with only panpastels. Next i wil paint the bird in. Thanks!
hi Zara I will be joining your patreon in a few days so will hopefully try this tutorial, I have this paper and wondered if you know if it will fade over time as I have heard some of the pastel papers do. ?????????? I do have pastelmat but looking for another all round paper so hopefully the Paint on might work ok for me if its lightfast.
Vielen dank für die tollen Videos. Darf ich fragen womit Sie die Stifte spitzen? Bei mir brechen sie beim spitzen gerne ab. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland😊🙋🏼♀️
I would love to hear your thoughts on wet/dry sand paper from the hardware store! I also am looking for a cheaper paper to learn on before I use expensive pastelmat.
Would I be able to grid the outline of a subject for accuracy of proportions with this paper, as I understand a grid on pastelmat is somewhat difficult. Your picture here is amazing, on this paper. I’m just learning. Thanks.
I wouldn't draw a grid on this paper but I personally have never drawn my grids on any of my art paper or canvas. I hate erasing the lines or having some lines showing if they can't be fully erased. So I have created a tutorial on Patreon showing how to create a grid and use it to create your outline without drawing the grid on our drawing paper/canvas. But this PaintON paper is thinner so I just wouldn't draw anything on it that I was anticipating to remove later. Just to be on the safe side =)
I’m grateful for that advice, thankyou. I’ll have to see if I can consider a short period on your patreon. The line drawing tutorial would be really helpful.Sorry retired & got to be careful with the outgoings.
Hi Zara! Your portraiture is stellar!!! Love every one of your videos! I have just been commissioned to create a portrait of a white cat with blue eyes. I've been researching various sites to get some information on creating white fur, but haven't been able to access a good one. Do you happen to have a video giving precise information on the "how-to's" for white cat fur??? I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks, dear.
Hey, thank you so much that's really kind 🥰. I have quite a few videos here on TH-cam focusing on white fur and then there are some in depth tutorials on Patreon. When drawing white fur there are many tonal values and in most cases colours to bring into the fur to make it look realistic. White fur is never white so on the white Poodle tutorial on Patreon I have provided a colour swatch to show just how much variation there is. I do tend to layer white fur differently but the videos here on YouYube although time lapses do show that =)
Hi,your art is stunning! I have gotten my eye in buying the natural beige paper one,but I mainly use colored pencils, you think this paper would work well with colored pencils? Also,is this paper thick, like cardstock?
Yes I think I'd like this for colour pencils although I haven't tried it. No it isn't thick. Care needs to be taken when removing tape from the edges for instance.
I think I may light it for colour pencils. This is something I want to try. I can't say for certain but I think it would be ok. It's not to textured which I prefer for my colour pencil work. I'm not sure how well it would cope with blending solvents though.
so I just found this paper on dickblick. more my price than pastelmat. was wondering since this tutorial was done 4 months ago, if youve used this paper for any more pastel work? very interested in knowing the out come of the work before i buy the paper. does pan fill up tooth too fast or is there still workable room for pastel pencil realism. thank you for you time in doing these videos. i know they take a lot of time. Clairefontaine PaintON mix media paper, can you put a link to the paper you mean as so many out there, cheers this is brilliant.

Beautiful and absolutely stunning. Thank you so very much for sharing what this paper can do and used for.
My pleasure =). Pleased to hear it was helpful 🥰

Hello Zara. Another fantastic lesson from you. I'd like to ask which pencil sharpener you use suitable for pastel pencils.
Thank you =). I use a Stanley knife to sharpen my pencils. I always find pencil sharpens blunt really quickly with pastels.
I would love to hear your thoughts on wet/dry sand paper from the hardware store! I also am looking for a cheaper paper to learn on before I use expensive pastelmat.
I haven't tried wet/dry sand paper as I've wanted to ensure the paper I use is still acid free and archival. I was really surprised with this paper.

Hi Zara, I’ve looked on pixabay for this reference pic but I can’t find it, can I ask what search you used? Hoping to join your patreon later today ☺️
I typed in either cat or kitten and just scrolled through loads of photos. The person on Pixabay was Adina Voicu if that's any help.

I am finding it very difficult finding dark grey pastelmat here in the UK.
It's called Anthracite, and I've found it on Amazon UK and Jacksons art.
When I put white over top my base layer, it hardly shows up or changes to the color under it 😢 anyone know how to fix this? I use stabillo carbathello
Where can I find this paper in the UK please?
Amazon, Jacksons Art, ArtDiscount. Quite a lot of places stock it =)
@@zaratomsart Thank you..❤
Thank you, its a great help. 🇩🇰

Hi Jill, I have just uploaded a real time tutorial to Patreon where I am using this paper and using PanPastels for the base layer =)
Can you please let us know here, how this paper performed with pan pastels as a base layer. Thanks.
Is it "Paint On Gris" ?
Yes
Have you already made other drawings on this paper? are they on youtube?
So, do you make others paints in this paper with pastel pencils? Can you compare this paper with pastelmat?
I've just uploaded a couple of weeks ago, a Golden Retriever video where I'm using this paper =)
Slow down please
The real time version is on Patreon =)
