I have always wondered how a trials bike would do in an extreme enduro event. I used to compete on them back in the 80’s and they were a lot of fun on tight trail rides and general exploring outside of trials events.
I see desert racers running. Trials tires? A punchy ties is good for traction and the tread seems friendly in all conditions. I ride EUCs and want to see a trails tire on my ride.
Great channel. So refreshing to see a dirt ebike properly ridden on dirt. Not that there's anything wrong with other TH-camrs riding Sur Rons with mirrors, and slick tires, it's just odd seeing dirt bikes on the road. Thanks for the feedback and good luck on the race.
@Juan Garcia Thanks man! Different strokes for different folks. Cool to see all the uses for Sur Ron's but we're definitely off road focused here at ECR. 👍
I'm so stoked you picked the EM! I got my '22 Escape R at the beginning of summer and have like 20 hours on it, it's a an incredible machine especially in the PNW. For stiffening the suspension I got Jitsie heavy duty front and rear springs from Trial Store USA and changed the fork oil weight to 15. Reiger also sells a 3 way adjustable rear shock that the pro e-trials riders use and comes stock on the Epure Comp. SXS sells a full skid plate that covers the linkage as well, it's plastic and goes over the stock metal one. I've also been toying with the idea of getting a different front sprocket to increase top end for when I'm going on rides that aren't as technical. CPD sells those for the EM. One last thing, if you're tall like me (6' 1"), you can take the footpegs off and move the spacer from the bottom to the top, helps a surprising amount. Can't wait to see more EM content!
@Trevor DePender This is awesome insight, Trevor! I was expecting to have a little more time to set this bike up before TKO but now that we're only a few days away from departing, I'm going to have to run the EM fully stock. The suspension mods you mentioned seem like they would be hugely beneficial. I can see running a different sprocket as well, the torque at low speed is great but it really signs off at higher speeds. Thanks for sharing all of your mods, I'll definitely check it out! 👍
We received our pair of them in November last year….absolutely love them….yes it’s definitely time for suspension work as I am heavier. Thanks for the idea…I will hit up Trial Store. We used to get a ton of gas bike trials parts from them in the past.
Thanks for that info. I'm 6'4" and will definitely look into doing the peg drop. And even though I have orangutan arms I find myself wanting to roll the bars towards me. At 240 lbs in gear, I should probably respring as well but I don't want to lose the trials maneuverability of it.
We have a new 22 ktm electric…haven’t rode it much but planning on mods….probably a set of 85 cone valves and get the shock done. We own 2 electric motion escape r 22. You should try a 2 inch handle bar riser…I run a 2in riser, a ktm 85 front fender…it looks better. We also use bark busters with a thin hand guard so it’s easy to see around. For night rides we use a cyclops helmet light system mounted on the bike…..absolutely amazing. We are the Black Sky entertainment crew, so we have talked before.
I’m curious to see your take on the choice after the race. I would’ve taken the KTM for the fast sections as it would be harder to make up the positions lost in the fast sections when you have a slight advantage through the very tight technical areas where it usually gets clogged up and you have to wait for the carnage to clear
The escape R is the bike ive wanted most ever since I first saw it. Im glad to see it performs to expectation! The only other bike id like to see is the Kolter Banshee storm: 4 gears, with clutch, 96V. It looks like a Drill one EVO on steroids!
The electric motion is definitely more expensive….I have ridden several mod sur Ron…definitely not the same creature. The Ktm is the only comparison. I have both now….the electric motion with the manual clutch is my pic for technical riding. Just different tools for different jobs.
I already posted this above but since you wanted to know I'll post it again: Some facts from TKO results that will blow your mind. There were over 300 gas bikes in Race1 and only 23 electric bikes. The #1 electric bike across the line finished Race1 in 3rd place overall beating over 300 gas bikes. The 2nd place electric would have won race1 if his grip didn't come loose and cause him to drastically slow down allowing 2 gas bikes to beat him. In the top 25 of race1 there were 4 electric bikes. That's pretty impressive for the first time that electrics have ever competed in TKO to see these kind of results.
@Electric Is Better Awesome man! The Talaria is a solid platform, for sure. I know of a few others running them at TKO so you'll be in good company. Would have considered it more if I could have modded it a bit. See you in a week or so 👍
Hope EM do a more traditional trail bike. Love the clutch, but prefer the mx look and size. Great to have so many options available regardless. Cheers for the awesome content.
On the KTM, if you put the left hand rear brake back on you can use it in low speed techy terrain to soften the hit of power when coming on throttle. I used that method alot riding enduro on the Alta redshift. Worked great.
@Drope Thanks man! The KTM is a solid bike but a few tweaks here and there and it could be really good. I know KTM is working on it... Future is going to be pretty bright!

Great ride video and information. I am surprised you picked something with so small a battery and run time. Race must not be too long. Maybe this was shot before the surron ultra came out but would like to see that compared in every way thanks.
Seems like there gotta be a way for manufacturers to write software to give you a clutch without anything mechanical changing on the bike. Some algorithm that emulates a clutch but is just a sensor.
Admittedly, it’s been a while since I’ve been out trail riding, but…..DAMN! You keep SO much momentum through even the gnarliest stuff - on both bikes! Wow…..
@Electron Racer If anyone can throw down on the XX, it's you! For sure, power isn't the most important piece of the puzzle. Look forward to seeing you next week dude 👍
@chris b The Freeride is a great bike, for sure. Like any of these eMoto's, it really depends on rider weight, terrain, riding style and power mode. I'm usually able to get 20-30 miles in the highest power setting on Colorado singletrack.
As far as I know you can use it to load up the engine when going over logs and stuff like that (while standing) but when you want to go really slow through rough terrain and you want to modulate the power it does not help too much I guess That’s just a guess, only time I did ride the KTM freeride was on a motocross track, so there it was no issue… my own bike for trial riding is a 350 so I can only imagine how it would be.
The brake does not help like a clutch does. I've got a Cake, SurRon, Escape R and a GasGas 300. If you want to modulate your power better. Have a second "off" switch so you don't whiskey throttle it and easy easy front wheel pops. Splats. Double blips. The real useful tricks for tough terrain, you want a clutch.
@fooblahblah Thanks for the offer Jeff! I was definitely on the fence between KTM and EM but I think lightweight and traction in the technical sections was the biggest deciding factor, and that is where the EM has the KTM beat. The 220v charging was enough of a tick against the bike, with my current setup, to go EM. I guess we'll see if I was right or wrong in a few days!
Awesome video! Im looking into buying an e-bike to go with my KTM 200XC-W and a 350EXCF that ride offroad, most single track like this as well, in NE USA. How far can the Talaria be modded and when both are modded, what would be better most likely, the surronx or the talaria? What kind of range are you getting out of the KTM and the Electric Motion bike, at the pace shown in the test video's?
Gr8 video Mr ECR! I also want to do comparison video soon and was going to call it the Shootout too! We are obviously in telepathic contact :) - but you still beat me to the post
It's hard to say this was anything close to a shootout between 4 bikes. I really dont see why the Surron or Talaria were even on there except for clicks
Great choice. It was amazing how much faster you were on the EM through the tight technical stuff. The weight, geometry and lower center of gravity really show up.
Are you in northern co? Saw your elite motorsports hat and looks like you're back in Bellvue somewhere. I'm waiting on my Talaria to come in next week, let's go ride if you're nearby! I'm outside of Fort Collins
HELL YEAH!!! Home boy shreds!! Watching halfway through that ride got me so stoked that I had to pause the vid n'go fire up my XCW for a rip through the woods!! Course my ride will look nothing like that but its still a good rip..
I recently purchased an Electric Motion Escape R. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get some handlebar risers for it. I ride standing most of the time and the stock riding position is way too low for trail riding. Thanks.
Hi man ✌️, great your video. I am about to buy my first electric motorcycle and I hesitate between a Sur-Ron / talaria "modify" or an "Escape R" from Electric Motion. I was a motorcycle and mountain biker too. Given your experience, which one would you advise me? Thank you in advance for your advice...
I have a 2022 freeride EXC and love it! The charging situation does kind of suck. My longer term goal is to get an electric or hybrid F150 which has a 220V charger in the bed of the truck. That will solve the charging problem for longer and more remote trips. Good luck on your race!
@@brock1732 geez okay that's a big inverter - probably not going to run on your average family car. But a v8/diesel/4wd should be able to handle that size. I can't find specific details of the charger, but 3000w is more than most houses can deliver so should be more than capable of handling it. It might not be ideal, but cheaper than a whole new car hahaha
@@punk46664 at that point the hybrid F-150 is a better deal. It even has Generator Mode. Check out TheTopher and Daily Motor’s videos on it. It charged a Tesla so you’ll be able to see the power output on Daily Motor video so you can know the charging situation! (For someone who might’ve been wanting a new vehicle for outdoors most trucks and SUV’s are already closing in on 80 grand nowadays anyways so get a two or three year old one.)
@RC I wish it had an option to do both. On the one hand it is nice that it charges quickly at home but it definitely makes it tough when you're in the field...
Hello, i'm a multime GNCC Champion but only a 100lb kid, I want a light weight E bike to ride true hard enduro (not hard trails). What is your recommendation please? Thank you very much and great channel!
Do you feel inertia using the clutch on the EM similar to loading the flywheel on a gas bike and does it seem to have the same roll through characteristics?
I have really been hoping to see electric cycle rider get ahold of the nicot e-beast e moto…. It looks enticing from the money perspective, and it also has real geared transmission… but does it offer a good value when compared to others. Happy with my sur Ron but I’m looking for “a little more”….
@Tyler Gardner A Nicot test ride is in the works! Hopefully have something to show with that bike before the end of the year. I know what you mean about wanting a little more...
Heck yeah! So glad you picked the EM. My only worry is you're going to be running it stock. I have the suspension done on mine. I hope you kill it there! Good luck at TKO! You're an animal on Electric dirt bikes, so I know you got this!
@Farmer Fpv Thanks dude! What did you do to your suspension? The suspension and top speed are the parts of the bike that I wish I could improve upon right now...
Nice review. But you removed the LHRB from the KTM? Why? They are a huge advantage IMO. BTW, are you aware that with less than $100 in parts, you can run a LHRB and foot pedal in parallel? Cheers.
@Bob Walters When it was up on the handlebars, I could not get enough leverage for that rear brake to stop the way I wanted it to and high speeds. It's a great option on all the other electric dirt bikes I've ridden but I found it to be sketchy on the KTM. It works fine at slower speeds, for sure, but I eventually chose to relocate it to the foot peg.
@@ElectricCycleRider Huh. Interesting weakness for a KTM OEM part. Didn't expect that, and there are straightforward ways to address it. But it sounds like you kinda prefer the pedal anyway, and you certainly know what you are doing! Anyway, I just wanted to put in a vote for LHRB's -- especially for bikes that lack a clutch. Ride on!
72v bac 8000 talaria sting I’ve never rode any of the other bikes but man this is amazing I’d compare it to my kx 250 easily pulling 650 phase amps at 13kw is amazing at 180 dc amps
EM just looks like a smaller bike that doesn't roll over chunkier stuff as well as the Freeride but I am just looking at a video and haven't ridden either.
Cool vid. I look forward to your posts before/during/after the event! I have a Surron X, love woods riding. Thanks for showing the road/wheelie guys/gals what you can use these bikes for! (Warning, they get dirty!)
@Ian For sure! I did a video about the Electric Motion lineup a couple years back here: th-cam.com/video/JcS98U4aBF4/w-d-xo.html but I will definitely do a dedicated full review on the Escape R once I get more seat time on it. 👍
@@ElectricCycleRider yeah for some reason the Escape R flew under my radar, I thought they were strictly trials, and I'd been looking closely for the last 3 years, kinda surprised I missed it 🤔 and had been watching most of your vids 😉 Oh well, got the SurRon now ☺️
@@PhiTonics I recently got the EM E-pure trials mostly because of the weight (~25lbs less than Escape) and it still CRUSHES enduro trails. The suspension may be setup slightly different but there's a lot of similarities between it and the Escape. If you go looking for tough trails you'll be worn out before the battery is any day.
The E-motion is the right pick for TKO. I would like to see a shootout with the current Czem (crazy year over year price increases) vs Cake/modified X/Talaria not for hard enduro.
@xXZombie_EataXx I'll have a review up soon that should explain it more in-depth but I think the Freeride is the better choice in technical terrain. I definitely feel all 290 pounds of the Storm Bee when the going gets rough...
Idk if the Cake is too small but it's got plenty of power! You should've also tested an Alta, if you can find one...their power & range were WAYYY beyond their time!
Cool vid mate how far is this race a buddy has just bought an em and can only get 30 km from a battery on what i call tame single track at old man pace he,s 68 yo and rides well 30 km to me just seams pathetic what do think 👍👍
@The Privateer The Stark VARG would have definitely been a contender if the production model were ready. The one I tested in Spain was a prototype but I'm sure we'll see some on the starting line in 2023.
Imo, I don't see any need for a clutch for this type of riding. I ride the Escape, LOVE it. To me a clutch defeats one of electrics biggest benefits. However, if you do want to hop from big rock to big rock, real Trials, yes get the clutch. There are times when I'm hopping 2 logs that are so close together that a clutch might have helped but I adapt and just don't need it for me. Plus my left hand is messed up, been looking forward to no clutches..
On my SurRon I've got a 72v battery and BAC 8000, and super expensive front forks. A big chunky back tire... The works. It's a great machine. But I haven't ridden it much since I got the Escape R. I like to do technical terrain. I can go lots of places on the EM that I can't get the SurRon to do. It has more traction. More control. The clutch is amazing to have.
I dont quite get the clutch part. It must be that the fine movement is better with the handle than the throttle, as an electric motor does not have enough inertia that proper management with regen would not work. I wonder if the throttle should not control wheel speed more than power at low speeds. I am sure someone tested that tho.
Electric has plenty of inertia. The clutch is still wonderful for modulating power. Popping the front wheel up. Splats. Double blips. Etc. Lots of useful hard enduro techniques are way easier w a clutch
I’m so glad you chose the EM. I think lightweight is key! The ktm isn’t unique imo at 250lbs. Can’t wait to see your footage and results!! Keep up the great vids man! I hope that EM battery will last!! - Also, please don’t tell anyone where you were just riding.. keep it hid bro. Thx
With those seats I'd rather have a endoruo with pedals 5000 watt 72 volt i would be happy, the ones with the bicycle seats so you can put on a nice a seat
The more I watch emoto videos, the more I feel like we're really far away from a 300 or a 500 replacement. EMotion is the best bike because of the clutch. But it's way down on power, and has all of the trials shortcomings: short wheelbase, inadequate ground clearance, small volume suspension.

I think if the electric bikes complete one year of competing against gas that'll be it before they split them off cuz the results already or pretty embarrassing for gas.
Hmmm.... I haven't had the same experience as you. I feel like my electrics are more reliable than the gas bikes I have/had. SurRon, Cake, Electric Motion, GasGas 300, KTM 500. I've put more time and distance on the electrics than the gas bikes, but I've had to fix more on the gas bikes. (other than flat tires. The Cake and SurRon have had lots of flats.)

If 220 is the main barrier I have generator you can take. I think the KTM is the call.
Get you a Motoclops kit brother. I’m working on a kit for the Talaria & currently doing testing. Would love to get you on board
@Kause Awesome 👍👍
@Vincent Johnston Thanks! I wasn't the first and I surely won't be the last, shootout away! What bikes are you planning to compare?
@@ElectricCycleRider well a slightly unusual comparison Sur-Ron LB road legal vs the British Triumph Trekker GT E bike
It's hard to say this was anything close to a shootout between 4 bikes. I really dont see why the Surron or Talaria were even on there except for clicks
Where did you get your surron plastics from
Great choice.
What size rear tire did you put on the KTM?
Well done Tucker !💪
HELL YEAH!!! Home boy shreds!! Watching halfway through that ride got me so stoked that I had to pause the vid n'go fire up my XCW for a rip through the woods!! Course my ride will look nothing like that but its still a good rip..
such a cool route! Wish I could ride it! Where are you?
The weight difference and the clutch....good luck. Seems like the best choice.
you are a good rider dude
@chris b Appreciate that man! Plenty of guys coming to race that are much faster than me! Haha 👍
I recently purchased an Electric Motion Escape R. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get some handlebar risers for it. I ride standing most of the time and the stock riding position is way too low for trail riding. Thanks.
Beautiful landscpe. Where is that?
thank you.... finally clutch i love this
Hi man ✌️, great your video. I am about to buy my first electric motorcycle and I hesitate between a Sur-Ron / talaria "modify" or an "Escape R" from Electric Motion. I was a motorcycle and mountain biker too. Given your experience, which one would you advise me? Thank you in advance for your advice...
Have u looked at the CAB Motorworks Recon E-bike it looks like a pretty comparable option to what all you have in that line up.
Awesome riding skills!!! 👏👏👏👏
I have a 2022 freeride EXC and love it! The charging situation does kind of suck. My longer term goal is to get an electric or hybrid F150 which has a 220V charger in the bed of the truck. That will solve the charging problem for longer and more remote trips. Good luck on your race!
F150 hybrid is an eMoto's best friend!
Get a 12v inverter to 240v and use your existing vehicle to charge it while you drive.
You wouldn't need a huge one for the charger
@@punk46664 The charger requires 3000w of continuous power. I did a little research and would need quite a big inverter? Is this correct?
(For someone who might’ve been wanting a new vehicle for outdoors most trucks and SUV’s are already closing in on 80 grand nowadays anyways so get a two or three year old one.)
have you had a chance to do a range test on your flat track? Love to see how it compares to the Talaria/Surron for range Thanks!
totally agree regarding KTM charging with 220. I mean get with the program KTM!!! Only reason I havent bought one while I wait on my Stark.
@RC I wish it had an option to do both. On the one hand it is nice that it charges quickly at home but it definitely makes it tough when you're in the field...
You ride some proper trails, reminds me of home except for its dry!
I think the Suron is the cleanest looking and best bike out there
Hello, i'm a multime GNCC Champion but only a 100lb kid, I want a light weight E bike to ride true hard enduro (not hard trails). What is your recommendation please? Thank you very much and great channel!
Do you feel inertia using the clutch on the EM similar to loading the flywheel on a gas bike and does it seem to have the same roll through characteristics?
I feel it on mine. The clutch and flywheel are a huge help.
You're an animal on Electric dirt bikes, so I know you got this!
what did you do to the suspension? it's the only thing that needs some changes on mine.
@Farmer Fpv Thanks dude! What did you do to your suspension? The suspension and top speed are the parts of the bike that I wish I could improve upon right now...
@Jm Fleming Agree!
@@ElectricCycleRider Does the red map now solve your top speed issue?
Ride on!
Would an Alta (defunct) bike or Sur Ron Storm be too much bike for this event? Thoughts?
72v bac 8000 talaria sting I’ve never rode any of the other bikes but man this is amazing I’d compare it to my kx 250 easily pulling 650 phase amps at 13kw is amazing at 180 dc amps
EM just looks like a smaller bike that doesn't roll over chunkier stuff as well as the Freeride but I am just looking at a video and haven't ridden either.
240 pounds for the KTM, my storm bee is same weight with 4.6kwh and 22kw peak, with more suspension travel. These still not avail in the US ?
Cool vid. I look forward to your posts before/during/after the event! I have a Surron X, love woods riding. Thanks for showing the road/wheelie guys/gals what you can use these bikes for! (Warning, they get dirty!)
Not sure what this is. But would love your XX that "you're not riding!" Ha!
Wait.. where did that e-motion come from..?
Never heard of them, can we get a dedicated review?
@Ian For sure! I did a video about the Electric Motion lineup a couple years back here: th-cam.com/video/JcS98U4aBF4/w-d-xo.html but I will definitely do a dedicated full review on the Escape R once I get more seat time on it. 👍
@@ElectricCycleRider yeah for some reason the Escape R flew under my radar, I thought they were strictly trials, and I'd been looking closely for the last 3 years, kinda surprised I missed it 🤔 and had been watching most of your vids 😉
Oh well, got the SurRon now ☺️
@@PhiTonics I recently got the EM E-pure trials mostly because of the weight (~25lbs less than Escape) and it still CRUSHES enduro trails.
Why not use the Sur Ron storm bee?
@xXZombie_EataXx I'll have a review up soon that should explain it more in-depth but I think the Freeride is the better choice in technical terrain. I definitely feel all 290 pounds of the Storm Bee when the going gets rough...
Idk if the Cake is too small but it's got plenty of power! You should've also tested an Alta, if you can find one...their power & range were WAYYY beyond their time!
one of the lads in our group has the EM escape its a great bike👌 fantastic trails you have to ride where you live... great video👍
Cool vid mate how far is this race a buddy has just bought an em and can only get 30 km from a battery on what i call tame single track at old man pace he,s 68 yo and rides well 30 km to me just seams pathetic what do think 👍👍
I think an explanation is in order if you say you don't need a clutch but sometimes you do.
Would you be interested to test our 12kw Vector Vortex?
Too bad you don't have one, but how do you think the Stark Varg would be in this situation?
@The Privateer The Stark VARG would have definitely been a contender if the production model were ready. The one I tested in Spain was a prototype but I'm sure we'll see some on the starting line in 2023.
IMO, for hard enduro, you want a clutch.
I have the Escape R and clutch use is optional, not required. So we can all be happy with the same bike.
You should try to get a fresh Stark Warg
What trails system is this?
When are you going to get your hands on an Artic leopard?!
@715 Trail Cams I've ridden one, just haven't done a video about it yet!
Excellent
How to do hard Enduro without a clutch?
I know that you've ridden a sur ron with 72v bac8000(albeit limited/loose chain). How does a fully modified sur ron compare in this lineup?
Cheers
On my SurRon I've got a 72v battery and BAC 8000, and super expensive front forks. A big chunky back tire... The works. It's a great machine. But I haven't ridden it much since I got the Escape R. I like to do technical terrain. I can go lots of places on the EM that I can't get the SurRon to do. It has more traction. More control. The clutch is amazing to have.
Do you have to charge or can you swap the battery?
The swap on the Escape R is pretty involved. So not really.
'
which one is better faster run on the motorcycle...
battery or gasoline
I got the ktm. It’s dope
When is the race
You seem faster on the e motion. Good luck!
The EM has a very wimpy main frame to steer tube connection. I would not trust that to be strong part of the frame.
Can any of these do proper trials riding? Thx
Electric Motion certainly can. It really is a trials bike with a seat.
Dude! Can I have your arms?!? Mine are worn out just watching! ✌😎
Thx
What trail is that , looks fun
@Mana Oakes The first rule of fight club... 😉
STARK⚡️
@Ralph Fader Coming soon! ⚡⚡
Some facts from TKO results that will blow your mind.
@@BrianLampright913 the fact his grip slipped causing 2 gassers to pass him, on the FIRST CROSS COMPETITION, really says a ton!
@@BrianLampright913 hey you're going to cause a whole lot of gasbike lovers to get all emotional, I looked at a couple other off so off-road results and I was pretty amazed that the electric bikes were actually competing so soon after come in the market. I think if the electric bikes complete one year of competing against gas that'll be it before they split them off cuz the results already or pretty embarrassing for gas.
You gotta get a 72v in the surron my guy
As cool as these Ebikes are they are EXTREMELY over priced (for me) for how FRAGILE they are in real world dirt running.
Stark Varg is going to dominate the game
problem is the battery isn't removable. i saw another prototype from europe but can't remember the name of them. i think it will be better than varg
EM has a clutch!! SOLD
You must have experience on gas Dirtbikes. The clutch is a must have in my opinion. I don't ride my other electrics anymore, just the EM
@@mitchrichardson744 yes I ride a Beta 300RR for trail and slipping the clutch is second nature and optimizes traction over technical terrain.
