    Next time I’ll remember that heroes can’t move and search for hidden treasure / secret doors in the same exploration turn. Wouldn’t have changed much. Mainly just a couple of extra GM turns.

    I spent many an evening after high school delving under the Old World with AHQ. It's great to see people playing it still. It's a hidden gem!

      My high school days were spent in corridors of Space Hulk and the lands of Talisman. Lots of GW memories, for sure. Do you still play? Using a certain set of house rules?

      I had a few adjustments for solo play. When populating rooms I would roll 2d10 for row and column positioning of each monster (dividing by 2 when walls were only 5 squares). Then I'd roll surprise and follow the normal rules after that. I also used the same method for furniture, at least 1 of the occupied squares needed to be covering the one rolled for it. I did help craft one of the many doorway exploit fixes on BGG, but that was long after my time with the game.

    There are days when I have debilitating anxiety, a lot of days, and these videos really help. Thank you. I have been binge watching your WHQ classic playlist for over 2 weeks now, especially to fall asleep.

    AHQ is awesome! definitely one of the best dungeon crawl board games ever made and it's extremely customizable. House rules, damn! do I have a lot of them for AHQ the main one is when it comes to rolling dice for passage and room generation, I use two different coloured D12 one red one blue or use whatever colours you prefer? the result of one of the coloured dice is counted as the passage length, then both dice results are counted together as passage features and passage ends on their respective tables, so you are only rolling once not three times in the exploration phase. I use a similar system for room generation, roll two D12 simultaneously one dice is counted as room type the other is door type, again this prevents the need to roll twice and speeds up game play so more looting a killing can proceed unabated.

    I think your token system for increasing the threat level works fine, and you've obviously thought about it and refined it. Just off the top of my head, another way to steadily increase jeopardy as the quest begins to reach its climax would be to increase the number of D12 rolls for traps and wandering monsters in that phase; such as, with every room opened roll an extra D12. So once five rooms have been opened, roll 5x D12 to see if a 1 or 12 is rolled. If that becomes a bit extreme, maybe if a 1 or 12 is rolled, those additional D12 dice rolls are then discarded, reverting to one D12 roll and they build up again with every subsequent room.

    I used your house rules to try out Advanced HeroQuest over the weekend, and I had a lot of fun! There's something so enjoyable about how granular every step of your adventure is, and the kind of emergent stories you create. Going from my first quest, where no one but our dwarf could hit anything, to the second where my elf managed to roll three crits against a chaos warrior made for some amusing imagery. I'm looking forward to more of this series!

      Are you using the Dungeon Counter house rules? Finding it fun? I've updated the Google doc a bit to reflect how I'm playing in this video series.

    I know I'm commenting on an old video, but I had a thought re: your trap/ wandering monster house rules. You're taking the total sum of them all, so that the plus and minuses can cancel each other out. What about if you only count the ones of the type you just drew? So if you pull a trap chit, you subtract one for all the trap chits already out, and ignore the wandering monster ones. If a trap fires, return all trap chits to the cup. But leave the wandering monster ones out.
    It seems like the way you do it here, the more you draw the less likely it is that anything happens since they cancel each other out.

    I enjoyed the playthrough - brings back so many memories. I've always loved random tables to generate characters/locations/events. The only problem I have with spending an afternoon like this (or playing similar setups with Roll and Write games like *D100 Dungeon* and *Four Against Darkness* ) is the generic nature of it. There is no specificity in any of the things generated. And that's fine - it certainly doesn't diminish any of the fun but it does make me wonder if, at least, the setting could be updated. For instance, one could 'map' random tables to Lovecraftian horror/Victorian steampunk by repurposing Mansion of Madness tiles, minis and item cards. Or, use any other genre dungeon crawler to create that kind of atmosphere. Of course, you'd still have to create your own little story in your mind to logically knit the things you encounter together but it might be a cool experiment that, at least, lifts the solo dungeon crawl experience up from the high-fantasy dungeon and into other genres...

      Have you seen Altar Quest?

    • @arcubal
      @arcubal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KingBlazerXS I have and I was originally very enthusiastic about the potential of Altar Quest. Regretfully, I was turned off by many of the design choices of the Sadler bros: the dungeon tiles, the token gestures to make the fantasy theme less generic, the complexity of their modular deck system, and choosing random (endless) replayability over a structured set of well-written scenarios. I really wanted ot love AQ but in the end passed over other dungeon crawlers more in line with my style (Drunagor, Arkeis, Machina Arcana, etc.)

    I was thinking that you can easily play on warhammer quest board. When you explore a room you just mark it to know how many ypu explored. The thing is, you put away imo a bunch of corridor rolling and table checking, which is always benefitial.

    Love these videos. However if i was to choose this or WHQ, id pick WHQ. For me, as much fun as AHQ is, there is to much die rolling. For a sandbox Dungeon Dive, it wins hands down as you can make rules etc and epic quests. But in terms of fluidity and mechanics and setting, during and after quests, WHQ wins it.
    Great videos 😊❤️ new sub right here

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would TOTALLY pick WHQ over AHQ. On that we agree. It's slightly more streamlined, and more fun, IMO. Although I do like the D12 system in AHQ.
      Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

      I love WHQ as well. The only thing about AHQ that I think is better is dungeon size and generation. WHQ dungeon size in particular is too small and too similar across dungeons. But all other things I much prefer WHQ, especially for events outside the dungeon and hero improvement. Both games are great though.

    I've been torn about getting this at the price it goes for online. I could print it but then the cost of a good print'n'play with the added minis could add up to. Hmm. I love standard heroquest but it's tough to get the group to play something as basic as standard HQ. AdvHQ being a solo game could scratch that HQ itch.

      I cannot recommend paying the money for the official release. You barely get anything in the box. Probably GW's worst boxed game in terms of value.

    hello, i'm french player and sorry for my mistakes. I realy appriciate , but can you explain the spécial rules with the GM token , during the Gm phase , you take one tokens and after you roll a dice( what does it mean?) . i see in solo rules that you roll dice and if it's one result, so you can you take a token . thank for response.
