    Excellent tip about using those books to add flavour to the dungeon! Thanks.

    Good stuff. Thanks for sharing your perspective. Nice shout out to HTHAD, BTW. That was a great little role-n-write. I spent hours with it.

      Isn't that a great little game? So creative. I would have LOVED it as a kid. Would have filled so many binders.

    It's funny how different your experiences can be based on how the dice rolls. In my second quest, for example, I ended up fighting many, many monsters and those wandering monsters would be reinforced by further monsters! While I can see how it can lead to some boring situations, I do like the way every quest can feel really different.

      Oh, for sure! I've had a near TPK on like the second turn before. My last few games have all kind of gone like this. It's very weird!

    Hi! I don't use the base combat rules/Warhammer fantasy battles statics sheets when playing AHQ, I have always found the system to be slow and clunky the system worked well for Warhammer fantasy battles when you had large units of troops battling it out on the table top but for use in a dungeon crawl setting the system is just tedious. I personally use the original 1989 Advanced fighting fantasy system of rules, the rule set is elegant and flexible with the depth of character races/skills/magic/levelling and the combat is fast and deadly. Almost every type of monster you could imagine is covered statistically in "Out of the pit" and creating custom monsters/weapons/Armor/magic items for AHQ using the AFF system is easy. Anyway! thanks for the AHQ content and other dungeon crawl goodness.

    Another excellent video full of great ideas using a dungeon that we've created along the way for a future expedition with all the extras at our disposal and I just typed Table Fables into Google and was pleasantly surprised to see books 1 & 2 as well as Arcane Artifacts & Caurious curios 1000 Magical Artifacts at Amazon for £30.67 so I've purchased those little gems and the comments look fantastic.

    Hi Daniel, Russ here, do you have anymore AHQ videos in the pipeline. I quite enjoyed watching these, so basically I want more lol. Cheers 👍

      Hey there! I do not, unfortunately. I should revisit the game at some point.

    Love this game and it doesn't bother me if nothing happens adds to the tension also original WHQ could have entire dungeons with nothing happening esp if you never rolled a 1 to summon monsters. Also I like the idea that not all dungeons are full some maybe long empty with nothing inside.

    Yo dog I hear you like games...😆...I enjoyed the ideas about creating different elements to add some spice and detail to your AHQ game when you have an empty dungeon...I am going to incorporate some Fate cards and WHQ event cards and Morcar Spell cards through the AHQ tokens to create more interest...And of course the furniture...

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At what point would you just be better offer playing WHQ though? ;)

    • @pedrowayne4675
      @pedrowayne4675 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok…I can now say without a doubt that AHQ at its core is way beyond WHQ in just about every category. The ability to mod it and tweak it to your liking. The dungeon generation is absolutely the best! The ability to create characters. The combat and ALL the detail sets it a part really from every other dungeon crawler out there. I’ve always been bothered that WHQ monster generation can lead to literally filling an entire room with monsters. The sense of heroic yet fragile characters battling it out to the end is a constant in AHQ and I love that. I’ve “completed” my AHQ build but am still adding to it. If These games were siblings of the DC world WHQ would be the little brother of a mature and well developed man in AHQ…😉…in the end though there are some redeeming qualities of WHQ, (and I’ll incorporate those! 🤓) it just falls short of AHQ as a complete experience.

    When you do the monster vs. heroes initiative roll.... i think the manual calls it a 'surprise roll' , and I have always played that the monster will go first if he wins, so would often be right up in the heroes face! I think it says something about if the heroes win, the monster can be pushed back a space. It gets a bit trickier placing multiple monsters and not blocking corridors/routes so sometimes i do exactly what you have done and also place them out of range, or sometimes protecting a character monster (in a room)

    When rolling to hit, 1 is a fumble and 12 is a critical which gives you another free attack. When rolling to wound there are no fumbles and when you roll a 12 it counts as a damage and is rolled again for critical damage. If you roll a 12 again you do it again ect..

      Interesting. Tell me more. How do you mix the two?

    • @matthewelzenbeck4025
      @matthewelzenbeck4025 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDungeonDive I think the wizard in AH sucks, you have to use components to use spells, and when you run out, no more spells. You could use all of your spells in the first or couple rounds of combat. Then what? No healing? No more descent attacks? I use my own spells and play the Wizard in the WQ fashion. Power roll, along with power stored tokens. Roll d6 a 1 causes an event or triggers new wandering monsters. And then the use of cards. A card for everything. Every rope, Greek fire, gold crowns at differing rates, screech bug. A card for every magic treasure. 17 different wands, 6 rings, 3 shields, 2 helms, 5 different bows, 7 different swords ect.... it's a lot of work, gonna hand write each card on card stock with the use of an art trading card puncher. For me it doesn't need to be pretty. My home made tiles and dressings will be the nice thing. I gotta stop now before I write you a book lol

    This is really interesting. Always wanted to try HQ or AHQ. so if I did get my hands on AHQ would I be able to play it solo in some form, right outta the box?

    Hi Daniel, great to see part two of this series. It's a shame these are so expensive now to buy, along with Heroquest and Warhammer Quest. Maybe one day I'll find someone who owns them to play but it had been great to see these as a history lesson. I hate to derail from your subject matter. As you may know by now, I'm still on the search for that solo dungeon crawler/adventure game that speaks to me. When I can get in that head space, I'll try to listen to those radio shows you recommended, anyway, as I stumbled across this game in development. I thought it might be of interest to you. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/219650/arydia-paths-we-dare-tread
    It is a legacy game albeit one you can reset but I'm not sure if you said that isn't a sub-genre you were into. I got strong Fabled Lands vibes from it, from what is known about it, seems to be very easily in development. The art is fantastic in my opinion.

      Good question. I’m always on the lookout for this kind of thing. Have you tried Mage Knight board game? I know it is not a dungeon crawler as such but it gave me all the right vibes. Pretty heavy to play. Plays well solo. Amazing game. The other solo experience I would mention is Bag of dungeon, which Daniel recently reviewed. It work solo, but it’s very light and quick to play, but is a true dungeon crawler.

    Hello, it would have been nice for you to simply decide what you roll so that the viewer can see the action of the game unfold. I'm watching your video understand the mechanics of the game, and looks like it'll be an hour into the video before I see meaningful mechanics unfold.
