About the price tag, it should be noted that $40 in 1989 when accounting for inflation is just short of $100 today - it was not exactly a cheap game back then either

Hang on a second. NES games were $50-60 on release in the 80’s. It does not make sense to adjust for inflation in this case. So this is just crap. The game should have been $50 for the rerelease

@@ALK82 I’m sorry I was only using video games as an example. I can say that the analogy applies to most products. You can’t pick and choose when to apply an inflated conversion.

The best thing about Hero Quest is the role-to-move rule. Will I trip on a flagstone, or leap heroically into battle?

I had the original Hero Quest as a kid! I never really played the game much, but I used the figures and furniture for all sorts of stuff, from playing out my own little adventures, to decorating my D&D adventures.
We moved a lot as a kid, and that cardboard box got beat all to hell. I think it lasted 15 years? Of constant moving, being dragged to friends' houses, going to my Grandma's for vacation, etc. I still have a few of the figures, but most of it is gone.
I'm really tempted to buy the new one, even though I still probably won't play it much as intended.

Captain, this brings back some very fond memories. A friend of mine (who I still play DnD with) received this game for Christmas in ‘90. We played the heck out of it and used the minis as pieces for regular DnD play. To this day we still say “checking for traps” and the Dread (Chaos) Mage is the quintessential BBEG figurine. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I’ll be sharing this one with my group for maximum nostalgia.

Hello and thank you for this video.
I still have my old box. Its condition is impeccable, for its venerable age (1989).
She will be enough for me.
That being said, I suppose that this reissue also serves to calm the price inflation of the first edition, which has become almost unobtainable here in Europe.
The complete range in "relatively good condition" sold for nearly €700.
While waiting for new videos, I wish you good games and dice 20 per thousand!

I loved Hero Quest as a kid. Battle Masters too! They were sold at a yard sale at some point, and then, when I became a young adult I eventually rebought both games on Ebay. This new release looks pretty neat...I guess they've changed "Chaos" to "Dread" and the Fimirs to the Deep One things due to licensing (Chaos and Fimir are both Games Workshop things) - but I liked the cool Games Workshop flavor of the old stuff. I remember growing up and then as a middle schooler discovering Warhammer, and then seeing the Warhammer fantasy stuff and realizing Hero Quest was connected - that was really cool!

Hero Quest was a great introduction game to RPGs and Dungeon Crawling. It gave young kids in the 1990s a chance to explore the fantasy realm of Warhammer or D&D and Tolkens Middle Earth. Who could forget naming their Barbarian either Connan or Barbie? Or rollong poorly wiy the insufferable wooden combat dices (skulls when saving and sheilds when attacking) Looking back it was a visually great looking game but also had poor game play.

My father wasn’t a board game player and I can still remember it. I loved this game and currently I’m playing Oathsworn which feels like the pinnacle of the game type evolution

Nice comparison video. I would offer some constructive criticism, if you don’t mind. I’m someone who is unfamiliar with both versions of the game, so when you compared minis/cards side-by-side, I couldn’t always tell which was which. Perhaps you could always put the one version on the same side to avoid confusion. Just a thought. Keep making videos!

I used to have even more, but sold/gave away a bunch years ago. Why I had so many? Toys 'R Us put them on clearance for $10 per set at one point in the early 90s & I bought 10(!!) of them purely for the minis as I wanted a Fimir army in Warhammer. The prices on the Barbarian & Elf Quest packs have gotten completely ridiculous!

Great review! I have the original Heroquest and a guy in my local AD&D group has the new one. While aesthetically I do like a few of the old minis better (as you say, the zombie with cleaver is cool and I prefer the Chaos motif) overall the new version is objectively of higher quality. I dig the art style of the old version but the new one is much more polished. The old cardboard and plastic furniture and doors got the job done but the all-plastic ones are much nicer. That said I'm not sure I'd pay the asking price especially since I have the original. It's not a terrible value by any means- expensive though it is you do get a lot for your money. I am a cheapskate though!😂 FWIW, I got mine for $10 on clearance at Kaybee Toys in the mall in the early 90s.😎

I have the original in pretty good condition, and have made homemade replicas of all the old expansions.
Now I need to find some good scans of the two new heroes and their cards and convert them to match the old school game

This was totally fun to see again. Yes, I had this one growing up and yes I played as much as I could with friends. But, it didn't last and I put it on the shelf when I learned about BBS's and "on-line" ANSI games like Tradewars 2002 and other ANSI puzzle games like ZZT. Since I left it on a shelf at my Mom's house I forgot all about it until now. I'm back in the same house but where is my game? It was on a shelf in the garage and it survived in near perfect condition. I've been playing table top games with friends and their kids for the past few years. Guess the next game i'm going to suggest?

This game along with all the expansions and my unused copy of Epic Spacemarines boxed set were all thrown out by Mother while I was overseas, the basement flooded more than 4ft deep and all of my gaming stuff was ruined. Let's just say to this day 35 years later I still get choked up a bit knowing the value the old sets hold today.

Hi, thanks for the great comparison. I used to play the OG in the early 90s at a relative's place, and pulled the trigger on the new version this year. It is really very well produced, the miniatures are super detailed and lovingly crafted, as you noted. I also like that both the heroes and the villains have female individuals, which is a perfect sign that the game has accomplished the time travel to the 2020's. I also enjoy playing solo "against" the app, which really manages to strike the balance between board game and video game feeling. On top of "being" Zargon, the app provides are great soundtrack and narrative background. Over here in Europe, the game is priced between 80 (black week) and 120 Euros. As you say, not cheap, but you get a lot of well designed and beautifully crafted entertainment for self, family and / or friends. Two thumbs up from me.

I got this for Christmas in 1992. We had the UK version in Australia. I bought all 3 expansions (Witch King, Kellar's Keep, Against The Ogre Horde) with Witch King and Keep priced at $20-30au (one I bought on special) and Ogre Hoard about $40au.
The new price converted to $au will be well north of $150au and the expansions close to $50au but I'd have to see how much local stores sell for or if I am forced to import it. Yeah, it costs more but like many nostalgia toys the price is hiked up as the real target is nostalgic adults with cash to burn. Still, it is cheaper than games like Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer 40k. Seems comparable to starting packs for Battletech currently and you get a lot more game for your money.

Here in the US, its about $110 for the main game and $30 for the witch king and Kellar's keep, and $49 for against the Ogre Horde and Magic Mirrior. To my mind, these aren't bad prices, given the cost of the originals in the 90s

    • @aytakk
      @aytakk 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@captcorajus I looked up local pricing and it is all around $200au for the main game (give or take $10-20) and the expansions are all priced around $100au. This isn't really unexpected and it translates to more than $US value in $au but we have to import just about everything fun like this so shipping adds a lot even when sold locally.
Back in the 90s you could buy Hero Quest stuff in mainstream toy stores in Australia so it made a difference. Now it is all hobby and gaming stores.

I got this game when I was in high school. I had played dungeons and dragons and similar games before getting this. I always felt like it was dungeons and dragons for people who didn’t have 6 to 8 hours to play a board game. I used to play with my brother and my cousin and we would squeeze in 3 or 4 solid fun games inside of two hours.

40$ might be about 96$ today's money thanks to inflation.
The price difference isn't really much there, if anything you get all the extra detail and material quality for 20$ extra.

I really loved this game as a kid, and created so many custom maps of my own. I saw this in GameStop when I was there with my kids and enjoyed telling them about this game. I didn't buy the new one because $140 is just not priced correctly. Yes, it actually is just a little bit of a price grab.

My mother got me the original around 1992 or 1993ish. I was only young so didn't understand the game, and mostly just played with the figurines and furniture. Iv got it on Tabletop simulator now trying to actually give it a go.

    love the old minis

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have a fondness for them myself to be sure. Not a fan of the square bases as in a crowded battle they would interfere with each other. The Plastic was a bit brittle and easily subject to breakage and stress fractures. But they were fun to paint.
The minis have the round bases and the board has slightly larger squares. The furniture itself is a bit 'smaller' which makes it more in scale with the miniatures. The plastic is nicely 'flexible' but also maintains its shape.
Either way, HQ is still the same fun game its always been.

    It is a lovely comparison.
One constructive criticism: when making a comparison between two games, keep the positioning the same for all the screenshots (i.e. new game on the left/top, old game on the right/bottom).
This avoids to the viewer eyes to have to wander around and have to identify what is what.
For the rest, very well done
