    1:48 maybe it's just camera effect but I can tell the fake instantly just by the quality of the dial. The real is so crisp and defined. The fake is blurred and crude. Just compare the lettering of Seamaster and the crisp colour of the Asian continent

    7:35 That is the nice thing about Omega featuring mainly display casebacks these days: it makes it extraordinarily easy to spot a fake. That lever is the real escapement. The "escapement" and full bridge that sit on top of it are totally fake and inoperable. Basically, the majority of what you see there is a decorated cover plate, that sits over the real movement. Very few replica houses actually replicate an in house movement (I believe there is a Rolex Daytona super clone that does). The majority simply use a Chinese manufactured ETA clone, and I am aware of no one who has ever cloned an Omega co-axial escapement, so you can always see the standard Swiss lever under the faux bridge.

    An absolute gap-filling video and spot-on review as well! In my opinion, there’s only one way you can really tell whether it’s a fake or not is under micro lens or by using a Lupe for close inspection. Additional red flag: (around 7:38) on the case back, right under the balance wheel you can easily spot even with a naked eye that this watch is using a basic anchor escapement instead of co-axial escapement.

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @herewegoagain...
      @herewegoagain... 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is what is great about Omegas from the later 2000's and on: the co-axial escapement. For better or worse, it is a 100% replica tell. Even a Rolex 3135 still uses a swiss lever escapement, making it easier to clone. But I am aware of no one who has ever attempted to reproduce a co-axial escapement... because it is a colossal pia to do, and the Chinese Rep manufacturers still haven't figured out how to, at all, let alone in a cost effective way.
      Legend has it that the only reason they are so good at the standard swiss movements is because ETA supposedly at one point have some Chinese factories manufacturing their movements, though I have not personally tracked down evidence to verify that claim.

      This is what I was thinking - the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Platinum is running well over $100k USD on the secondary market. Would I wear this watch everywhere? Probably not. I would be slow to surrender one of those versus a super clone costing less than $2k. I'd part with the super clone and wish the new owner well vs. getting into a serious security situation where my wife would tell me to quit being stupid and hand over the watch.

    • @BoleDaPole
      @BoleDaPole 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Clone or real the issue of theft remains. A platinum Rolex goes for 100k on the secondary market, but that's one that is completely legit, with box and papers. A stolen one will be much harder to move and won't even sell for half the price, most likely it will go for about 10-20% its market value.
      The famous Rapper Pop Smoke was murdered for his Rolex, a watch that retailed for over $30k that the killers sold for a measly $2,000.. and that was during the height of the rolex craze.
      Not all robberies end in both parties walking away, if you're really concerned about it then simply don't buy them at all. A shiny bauble really isn't worth dying over.

I’ve been at watch meet ups, and the subject of fake watches came up and one person was bold enough to say that anybody owning a fake watch, should be arrested. I don’t agree with that and from what I’ve seen owning a super clone is completely legal.

      @@TheTimekeeper I understand, it is a complicated topic, I suppose that if what you are looking for is the history and innovation of the watchmaking company, an authentic watch is the best option, but if what you are looking for is good functioning, design, basically a watch that does the job, which is what I'm looking for in this model, then a super clone is the best for you, in the end the big watch houses get rich by inflating the prices of pieces that aren't really worth it, and I guess that's fine, that's how it works. capitalism, China is releasing its own brands with better calibers at very affordable prices, it will be interesting what will happen to the watch market in the future. Where did you buy this one? And how expensive

  • @herewegoagain...
    @herewegoagain... 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It always amuses me when the gap between replicas ("fakes") and homages is presented as some sort of monumental divide in legitimacy. I honestly fail to see how. Illegality of using a trademarked logo notwithstanding, on the consumer level, buying either a replica or an homage serve the exact same purpose: the buyer refusing to purchase the real watch, in favor of knowingly buying a watch its maker blatantly ripped the design off another company, in an effort to obtain, and show off, a watch that looks exactly like something more expensive. Whether it is 99% the same or only 98% the same, and what tiny logo printed on the dial is, that no one can see from more than a foot away, is of little consequence. Objectively speaking, from the consumer standpoint, buying either is effectively the exact same thing.
    Now on the manufacturer side, of course, the unlicensed replica practice is indeed illegal, but we all know that, and no one is disputing that. But the vast majority of contempt in this line of discussion is aimed at the consumer, rather than the manufacturer, which is why I pointed this out, because I honestly see little difference, ethically, socially, or financially, between the two, on the consumer side..

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see your point. I think homages exist to fill a gap for those who simply can’t afford the luxury watch that they desire. Even you can afford the watch, you can’t simply walk into the store and walk out with one (specifically taking about Rolex). Although totally legal, homages seem like a grey area where folks can get a taste of the real thing. After buying my gevril, I have not purchased another homage. There are so many original watches out there but I understand the appeal.

    • @herewegoagain...
      @herewegoagain... 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TheTimekeeper Ya legality aside, I wasn't taking a stance on the replica or homage market, nor was I attempting to admonish the consumers of either. I simply wanted to point out that there is little difference between the two.
      Homages do indeed often serve as a gateway to the watches they are based on in a sort of "try before you buy" way. They amusingly often serve as advertising material for the bigger brands and actually lead to profit for those brands. As for loss of business, I feel that is a contrived and inaccurate argument: I defy you to find even one person that was in earnest going to buy a high end watch, and then decided to by an homage instead because it was a better value, resulting in a loss of sale. So when it comes to homages, while I personally prefer to either buy the original watch or find other, more unique pieces, I have no moral or ethical issues with homages as I see no harm and an actual benefit.
      But my main point is, everything I just said about homages... is true about replicas as well. Again, I know of not one person who was on their way to the Omega store to buy a watch, and then decided to buy a replica from a local street vender instead... someone who can and wants to buy an Omega is going to buy an Omega. They may buy they rep first, but they will eventually buy the Omega. And anyone who never ends up buying an Omega was never going to buy it anyway, replica availability notwithstanding.
      And I have my own admittedly anecdotal story to support this: I was never a watch guy. I always had a watch, but knew nothing about them... until I got the opportunity to inspect a very high end Replica Seamaster. I was fascinated with how close it was to the real thing, and in watching a comparison video on that same replica watch vs the real one, I became fascinated with automatic movements and watches in general. My obsession with watches started because of a replica, and eventually led to me finally obtaining a real Seamaster, and having it serviced directly at Omega. In the irony of all ironies, an illegal, unlicensed replica Omega led to profit for Omega.

      those replicas are created to cheat
      homages are for people who can't afford Rolex or Omega or even Seiko but want to check how any given watch looks on their wrist
      also those homages are great base for modding !!
      Myself, I wouldn't touch SKX but with some homage watch ? why not to change bezel or diar or movement or all at once !?

    • @herewegoagain...
      @herewegoagain... 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tom_Kowalczuk "those replicas are created to cheat" ... I need to you qualify that statement. What exactly do you mean, and how does that differ from an homage?
      "homages are for people who can't afford Rolex or Omega or even Seiko..." Everything else you say after this point is also true of replicas. I still fail to see any distinction between the two, on the consumer level. A replica is also for people who can't afford a Rolex or Omega. A replica also can be a base for modding, and even frankensteining (mixing replica with OEM parts).

    • @cosmodoc
      @cosmodoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wearing a replica is pretending to wear the real thing. Wearing a homage is not. To me, this is a very big difference. A can afford the real thing and I have purchased original Omegas, Rolex, etc, but I also have come across original designs where I thought that the original was not worth buying, compared to the homage. So, I don’t agree with your opinion at all.

      This is beginning to happen in the bicycling world. The Chinese manufacturers who literally make all the carbon fibre frames and wheels, save only two French brands who make everything themselves, are making their own brands with what is measurably better quality than the name brands spec for their frames. The whole bicycle world could be turned upside down as more consumers get educated on the inherent quality of the Chinese brands over the European brands. Hambini has a great TH-cam channel calling out the sad state of the Euro brands and their failure to make decent quality frames and wheels.

    All of the flaws that people are talking about are only visible if you hand them the watch and they know what to look for or have a genuine one to compare. Otherwise, if you can't see them from a normal viewing distance it really doesn't matter.

    When they can make such accurate copies it makes you wonder why a watch has to be so expensive. Probably costs 100 bucks to make the real branded watch and then $50k goes to a Swiss banker. The replicas have a badass, bandit, rebel aesthetic to them.

      Probably costs a lot more than $100 for the legitimate ones. We’re talking several hours to assemble and test from a skilled craftsman. My guess is probably closer to $1k.

      Labor costs are different. I'm sure the Chinese workers work in sweatshops for 14 hours and get paid $10 a day. The Swiss workers get $35 and hour plus benefits.

Let’s be honest, none of us are free from unethical consumption, there’s some parts of what you buy being made by unethical labour. Even Hamilton’s and tissots sources parts that they can from China while maintaining the 60% threshold for Swiss made designation mandated by the Swiss gov.

    This watch is $458 usd. I know this because because I have one like it. Honestly I see no problem with wearing a replica, no point in spending thousands just for the hype. Of course replicas will never be as good as the real deal but they come damn close. I do hate when people pass them off as genuine, sure people may believe you but that's slimy behavior just be honest 🤷‍♂️
