And suddenly, the song started to play. The song that for me and many others, represents speedrun and it history better than anything. Then I knew, this video *is* great.
Actually, timers in home console games like Super Mario Bros does serve a useful purpose. If the player gets stuck in a level and can't move, a softlock, the timer that kills the player will solve that problem. Some games, mainly puzzle games, even have a dedicated kill button to reset the level, such as Adventures of Lolo.
As much of a pain it was to fully read as a kid, Homer's Odyssey was a neverending tempestuous journey across each and every corner of the Mediterranean -- its cast constantly toyed with by the Gods' whims -- that still resonates within even if I forgot most of it since. Not dissimilarly, every video from Summoning Salt feels like a record of a proud but torturous adventure that never seems to end for those involved, with only a bittersweet ending at best for those that manage to make it out on top of the grinding trudge.
🤯🤯! When I was a kid my dad gave me a printed out walkthrough including maps for Wolfenstein. Never knew Romaro was the person who actually made it! Instantly recognized how he displayed the maps!

It's in the very nature of TH-cam video essays to include the most tortured cross references possible. In that sense, this may be the perfect video essay: informative, wide ranging, and stuffed with as much classic literature shoehorning as the form can bear. I love it!
I keep looking for discussions of the "meaning" of speedrunning, or if you will the literary criticism of speedrunning. You're the closest I've seen yet. Excellent work sir!!

Honestly, over time I’ve come to respect the Glitchless/Deathless perspective more. I think there’s more merit to “how the run looks” over absolute speed than most people consider. Real sports nerf broken strats all of the time just because they make the game less elegant. Loosely enforced ideas that include intent, like grounding calls in football or icing in hockey. We even see this in modern running with no ACE categories being more popular than ACE, and 16 star being more run than 1 star which is more run than 0. I’m not saying the way the scene is now is wrong but I think the idea of playing a game to its *intended* limits has a lot of beauty, especially in a time where most games still had so many seconds to save just off of playing better.

i used to watch the cosmo streams, (narcissas old name) then when the sex change happened most people were super supportive in chat! but the streams were just whining about money problems and even begging and crying for money and that people didnt understand her and were transphobic for unsubbing.... but yeah, i had to unsub too, it was barely any gameplay, just whining chat streams ... the angle she tries to convey about the chats being toxic and transphobic are totally BS, it was supportive towards her sex change, just not supportive about her content, wich was just chatting and really weird dilusional ramblings and begging etc so obviously more and more people unsubbed, wich triggered her to be even more unreasonable with calling everyone transphobic etc, endless cycle
One minor nitpick in an otherwise flawless video: You keep saying that Morimoto's TAS was "not performed by a person", but it was performed by a person, it was just not performed in real time. Morimoto is still the one who did the work to identify strategies, and set up the TAS to execute as he planned. It's like saying that a recorded piece of music that was mixed together by sound engineers was not performed by a person, because it isn't performed live.

It'd be nice if you could have added some more context for Narcissa's behavior, she was dealing with a lot of harassment due to her transition. She didn't just have a mental breakdown because she lost one competition.
The funny thing about this, is that Narcissa Wright was insturmental in the popularity and proliferation of speedrunning as a genre, especially in regards to races and streams. The Gamer community literally owes their popularity, and the existance of many of the people who later became speedrunners, to a trans woman. Some people should maybe consider that before being a douche
