The castle is my favorite set of all time. I remember my grandma got a bucket of 90s LEGO at a yard sale and this set was in it. I build the castle and I played with it for hours and hours without getting bored.
Honestly one of my favorite things of this era of Lego is the variety of soldiers, from factions and prints. Having three torso prints for a faction is crazy tbh
HE DID IT! BRAD HAVE COME HOME! :D Love that faction. Would be awesome if they made more cameos in future lego castle sets. And a fun thing about the lions, Denmark have the 3..."lovely" lions in thier crest, Sweden have 2 pompus lions, Norway a dancing lion and Finland....well....they have a "special" lion. Again, awesome work! The best faction now have representation.
I figured it was time that some positive stuff was said about the royal knights! Definitely and underrated faction! Hope we see a remake of the king someday!
This is the first faction I got as a kid. So many great memories came from playing with the Royal Knights! I'm only missing one set: the blue catapult.
I can understand why people hate on them. But I do agree they get more hate than they should! Especially fright knights! I may be biased but basil the bat lord is top five original Lego characters!
Did you change your style of thumbnails? I love it. Never actually thought of the Royal Drawbridge being connected to the Royal Knights Castle. Great research.
Honestly just been trying some different thumbnail styles to see how the video will do! Also trying to find a way to make mine stand out. A friend told me about that and I had to include it because it’s so cool!
Always ready for a new Tavern Talk! :) In the two German audio dramas, a LEGO club board game and internal LEGO story documents, the land where the two castles stood on opposite mountaintops was called "Tarenta".
Oh that’s so cool! I was having issues when trying to do research into the audio dramas so I didn’t learn much from them. Now I feel like I missed important information 😂
I take umbrage that the Dragon Masters are considered the replacements for the Black Knights. Especially when the two were in conflict. The Black Knights will never be replaced in this Castle Lego fan's heart. Never!
I agree black knights are there own thing. But at that time Lego put out dragon masters to phase out the black knights just like how the black knights phased out the black falcons. Lego then phased out crusaders with royal knights and Wolfpack/forestmen with dark forest, and fright knights was also sort of a replacement to dragon master and the other “bad guy” factions. Like was trying to make a new era of castle that was almost an updated darker version then the original era
Absolutely love the Royal Knights. Such a cohesive theme. 6090 (Royal Knights Castle) has so, so much going on in it. Awesome video!! This was a fun one! Love that people are discovering the drawbridge thing.
A brother in-law got the Royal Knight's Castle for Christmas, and I had the pleasure of helping him assemble it. I had the smaller sets, including the royal king. I gave that away, a long time ago. Kinda wish I hadn't, now. Nobody I know actually got the river tower, though.
These were my castles. I had the dark forest and the main castle. I don't know if I still have it, but this makes me smill so much. I miss these, and loved them so much. I don't know if I want this faction again, but I am happy to see them again.
Hi, great video as always ! I really think Lego missed something in the Royal Knights minifigures, especially the knights. As a kid I felt quite a disappointment after Dark Knights and Dragon Masters to have what : A king apparently going into battle with just a shirt instead of an armor ? A champion with just a tabard ? A third knight with just a Hauberk ? yuk ! for a total of only 3 mounted knights for the whole faction. IMO, the castle is the best designed of all Lego castle before the 2020ies : no dead angle, two main gates and a secret way, the well... (I remember the well in the Black Knight's castle and a fountain in the middle-size Dark Forest set, but that was so rare !). As for the ghost, its cache is much more similaire to the one in the Crusader's castle. I see it as the last standing parts of a former building the castle was build on the ruins. And the outpost... I find it terribly lame and ill-designed, nothing to save ! What's the logic at all to give your ennemies the opportunity to hide and protect just under your feet, then undermine your walls ? Oh, and skeletons were as many lost opportunity for an additional real minifigure (prisonner, princess, civilian, maybe even a magician). Looking for your next videos !
The Royal King was one of the first castle minifigs I owned. I lost his original head over twenty years ago & had to make do with De Martinet pulling double duty. Luckily I picked up an extra at a flea market, so now the og is back in charge and can once again lead his men in many a diorama.
I don’t even like the Royal Knights, but this was still great, Brad. The comparison of the crowned lion to the Denmark coat of arms is a genius bit of research.
I can’t take full credit for that bit of info😂 I remember seeing it when reading comments on a video a while back and has stuck with me since then! Just been waiting for the right video to put it into😂
I had to watch this one. What a blast from the past. I completely LOATHE the royal knights. This was the beginning of my “dark ages”. What an awful design, in my opinion. This theme knocked me right out of Lego for over a decade. Got back in with 2012 kingdoms. I can’t stand these Lion factions. Unfortunately I missed out on dark forest and fantasy castle because of this. Oh well, no regerts, we’re in the golden age of Lego right now. Good vid. Keep up the good work.
The 697 Idea Book, released in 1997, features building instructions for a Royal Knights fort. It's in a kind of 2D style and uses a skeleton as decoration. I really like that "set" and how it somehow resembles real medieval art.
I gave Richard's torso black arms, dark grey gloves, a black waist and dark grey legs. Added an old dark grey helmet and it became a cool looking lineman. Just like a new faction.
On of the best castles Lego ever released. And the faction was so cool. The only flaw was that mounted knights didn't have any armor, as we were used to see for Black Knights, Crusaders, etc.
This was the era I grew up in, while definitely not as good as the themes before but there is some great sets, namely the Castle, it's one of the best from the classic era.
@BrickingUpBrad good deal, glad to hear that. I've been keeping an eye out for that one or the 1st knights kingdom one if I can find either for s solid price
First baught of the king with his trusty stead I've baught the set probably 4 times but wish I could have gotten more to build up a small garrison of spearmen the boat wuld be perfect
So German localisation for Knights Kingdom 1 they had King Leo called King Richard. So I guess in Germany King Leo and his Lions faction are supposed to be King Richard and the Royal Knights but when he's older and having a slight change in coat of arms. Though I think there probably is family relation between King Leo and King Richard. Like they could be brothers or cousins who went their separate ways off to rule their own kingdoms or King Richard could be Leo's father (this would explain Princess Storm's red hair).
in skeleton surprise the goblet I think is knockoff because there is a ring at the bottom where lego never had that, might want to check for ID and lego logo
The Royal Knights don't deserve the hate they get online. The 6090 castle is great and criminally underrated. It's my oldest son's current favorite set.
@@BrickingUpBrad Can't wait when you get to Fright Knights and Knights Kingdom 1. Especially with KK1 and all the tiny bits of lore explained in Creator KK's manual and the story book Medieval Mischief & Mayhem.
HAHA ! even more proof for my theory that the lion knights and black knights intermarried (there is a wedding and a feast as alternate models to the black knights vs Lion Knights joust set)! The proof is in the scale mail torsos! and because the lion knights were the dominant / maybe richer faction, they took most of the lion design, but kept stuff like this in - and most importantly, the colors - blue and red with black. The fact that they use the Black Monarch's ghost is even more reason to believe that the black knights married into the lion knights and made a special royal house with their combined resources and manpower. That's what usually happened in real life as well after a war, or 2 - especially when one faction was getting desperate because their "monarch" died - and now have to find a replacement mid war with invading dragon masters - it tool a while, but they married, and consolidated power, and won against the dragons, just to get mind controlled and bamboozled by Wila the witch later on as antagonists for the Frightknights. Regarding the sets, I always loved the drawbridge (and I am sure I saw it somewhere, in one of the old old LEGO booklets. connected to the side entrance of the huge castle. On the big castle, the more I see it, the more I start to love it. I never liked this faction much (mostly due to the ugly lion head htat didn't seem to fit the rest of the heraldry) but the castle itself is a really good castle, not as iconic as dungeon master's castle, but I daresay equally well built. Also I love those corner machiculation prebuilt huge pieces from the Dactaca set. I really wish there was a good way to recreate those in a more detailed way. Alas, I've been trying, and failing - for now. The king's barding would have been so much better without the lion head, and just the red and white with dots part.
I never collected any of the Royal Knight sets besides the king. I thought they were ugly and too wide open-looking. The Fright Knights had a similar problem. The sets that came before, and after were much better.
I would disagree. I think all eras had there issues. Personally the era of dragon masters to fright knights had a lot going for it and I don’t think it makes it worse then other eras of Lego castle.
Denmark? Really?.. I guess it's just a coincidence how closely the lion knights, crusaders, royal knights coincide with English history. Nah, definitely quiet old Denmark, that didn't do a single thing worth talking about during the medieval period. Lmao
