Bionicle was my introduction to mechanical design and although the characters themselves weren't mechs, they still hold up as some of the best designs for fictional creatures ever. Ironically, I now collect Gundam model kits, which are similar to Bionicle (buildable action figure), but based on Japanese Anime shows and grown up because, again, model kit.
The reason the Mask of Light story followed those two seemingly random guys was because that was the silent player avatar in the Bionicle flash game, which made it really cool to see him actually in the movie, and then mind blowing when he went on and became the seventh Toa
Its also really cool that his friend in the movie would then become the leader Toa in the line that revitalized the series. The Toa Ignika is one of the more popular lines that kept the series going a few more years.
It also possibly took inspiration from Lord of the Rings, follow the plucky little guys on their quest, and see the badass heroes and villains from their perspective
The single greatest thing about bionicle. Was the commercial with them busting down a gate with “Move Along” by the All American Rejects playing. My 11 yr old brain just died of a dopamine high.
I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I really appreciate the bits where you actually took the bionicles outside or elsewhere to get appealing angles or think of actions for them to do. I like the extra effort!
Great video Flandrew. Bionicle was a big part of my childhood. Lewa was always my favorite Toa, especially his Nuva form. I really liked the Toa Hordika line as well. MNoG is awesome and really set the lore for me.
Fun fact: It wasn't LEGO Star Wars but Bionicle which saved our favourite Danish building block company from bankruptcy. Bionicle was a last ditch effort while the company was in dire straits, the gambit paid off and left us with many amazing childhood memories.
And while all good things must sadly come to an end, it still hurts that the Bionicle series was axed. Hero Factory just does not live up to its predecessor
I was the kid that got featured in the Lego magazine question and answer where I asked if Lego would make a Bionicle movie. Still have that copy of the magazine and one of my favorite childhood memories.
The Tia Inika were cool but my memories with them revolve around Jaller’s limb sockets all breaking. Those damn translucent pieces were almost as brittle as the classic brown Lego bricks
Bionicle was such a cool concept. I remember having super fond memories of playing with my Toa Inikas, Baraki’s Mahri and Pirakhas. And i thought the Vezon and Fenrakk set was one of the coolest sets ever made.
I had all 6 books and a bunch of Bionicle toys too. I liked them because they had way more maneuverability than ANY other toy out there. Great Video! You should do the later versions of them because those were the ones I had, like in a "where are they now" type of video.
12:13 - The reason why the protagonist of Mask of Light is a Matoran instead of one of the Toa is because Takua (the blue & red Matoran) is the main protagonist of a lot of the Bionicle media of the time such as the Mata Nui Online flash game, some of the GBA games, and the web animations. Not to mention, the movie is about Takua becoming the 7th Toa, so it makes sense that he would be the focus.
Of all the franchises I was into as a kid, Bionicle has had the most absurdly dedicated fanbase. They're still putting on annual fan conventions and building out catalogs to organize the existing lore.
We had way too much fun rebuilding those sets! All worth it! Video came out great!… But now I’m gonna badger you for another one covering Metru Nui! Need my boy Toa Lhikan represented!

My God, the nostalgia! These were probably the last great toys before the era of advanced gaming on PCs, consoles and smartphones. If you still have any, don't get rid of them, ever! Very few things in life can equal with the amazing feeling you got as a kid, when looking at the "Bionicle" section in a supermarket. Some even now, as adults, report having "the Bionicle dream". I wasn't a Bionicles kid but by golly I'll never forget the toys both in commercials and in stores, or the games and the movies being advertised everywhere lol. This is definitely one of the most nostalgic videos for me even if I never owned one. Top tier content as always Flandrew!
Oh man, I could talk literally hours or even days about my experience with this franchise. Those early days prior to the Metru Nui arc were just my jam at that age. I dropped out in 2004 then returned in 2009 and caught up on the story at that point, just as the franchise was wrapping up. Even met one of my longtime internet friends while browsing early TH-cam for archived Bionicle clips. It's one of my favourite franchises ever and has defined my own creative outlets. Long live the Great Spirit.

Same with my brother. We used to think Bohrok were Toa's pets, and they had trouble controlling them. We got the CD game, but neither of us understood English at our ages. The game itself was incredibly hard, and we got extremely exited when we heard first time the announcement: "Level two".
There's a bit of two steps forward, one back with the rest of Bionicle. We never got anything as mechanically complex as the Rahi until the 2008-2009 vehicles. The lime green sockets in 2007 and the new socket in 2008 was fragile as hell and could break easily. We lost gear functions after 2005, and we had some ugly mask designs (looking at you 2006). But in the "two steps forward one back" tradition, 2015 had a juvenile and bare bones story, and while the figures recaptured the 2001 feel; it completely crashed and burned in terms of story and market impact. Thank you so much for making this video! A lot of great memories came flooding back in to my mind! Between the figures, Mask of Light movie, and the GameCube game it was truly a great time to be a kid and love Lego!!!!!
This video sparked emotions, nostalgia and memories I had forgotten. Thank you. Just remembered sitting in my grandmas living room assembling one of those after I convinced her to get me another one. Meanwhile she'd be in the kitchen making some chocolate pudding. Man, I miss being 6 years old.
Oh my god I had completely forgotten about all the different versions and series. This video made me remember so many awesome childhood memories, thank you!
Thannk so much for bringing me back some bright childhood memories, I remember trading codes with the neighbors kids to unlock all of the movie clips. Seeing all of these figures again, I don't remember precisely which of them we had but I remember the fun we had for sure. Never had any of the videogames or comics but I like to rewatch the mvie all of a sudden.
I really loved the rahkshi and mask of light!! Thank you for the nostalgia! Bionicles were really awesome! I didn’t know Lego was struggling at the time and this saved them!
As a kid I loved the world of Bionicle and looking back the early simplicity of a bunch of robots mucking around the jungle translates pretty well to playing with them in your backyard. Kinda became less enchanted with the brand as it grew in complexity and lore. Hoardika being the last I really kept with it when we still had familiar characters but I was also just getting older :p
I was 7 at the time of Bionicle's rise to fame. Man, I had almost all of them. Begged my parents to get me the ones I wanted! This video was awesome and put me in full nostalgic mode. Brought back great memories for me. Thank you!
As a kid born 1993 I was the perfect age to appreciate LEGO's launch of Bionicle. I received the very first Bionicle comic from my monthly LEGO magazine subscription (2001, I think), and was instantly obsessed with getting a Toa of my own. I remember hoping to get Lewa, but settling for Kopaka as my first, since he was what was available in store shelves when mom took me looking. I still have portions of my collection. I played the 2003 video game (there was also a gameboy advance version not mentioned here; you could play as the OG Toa), and can quote the Mask of Light movie to this day lol ("unity, duty, destiny!") I drifted once the shift from Bohrok/Rakshi to Metro Nui happened. Will always have found memories of Bionicle shepherding me through childhood. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Man this really unlocked some core memories... I think I had almost all of these up until the toa of light, which I don't think I've ever seen. And I remember being so hyped over the gold masks
Bruh... You unlocked a childhood memory i totally forgot about rock raiders! I actually had the first couple of bioncle magazines when lego magazine gave them for free..... sadly we were in a Christian church and my parents threw them away not a day goes by i wish i ahd them now as a 33 year old theyd be worth a pretty penny
Anyone else out here still have “Bionicle dreams”? Where you walk in to a store and discover that they have a ton of Bionicle sets (new and old) and then right as you start throwing them in to your cart, you wake up?
Mate thank you for this video I'm like fully reliving my childhood right now and I'm loving it while dying with a cold so this has cheered me up big time I didn't even remember half of these especially the sliser things and the mohawk Darth maul ones
Flandrew, I’ve been watching your stuff for a long while now and I have come to the conclusion that we would have been very good friends in another life. Every video you have put out speaks to me on a very deep level about things I have the exact same view of as you. Keep up the great work.
Sir, you just brought back a core memory of mine....I was obsessed with these when I was younger and forgot about them halfway......never saw them again sadly...
The one memory that I remember the most was the disc slinging bionicle figures that I had when I was younger. I used to play all the time it got me exploring the entire franchise and later, it expanded to other franchises like Star Wars, marvel, dc Star Trek, etc. It also got me creating my own worlds inspired by or encouraged by Bionicle. Such memories to remember.
I misread the title as "When Bionicle Ruined The World"... either way 😂 Great video! Me and my brother had a few of the toys, I remember the Rakshi ones, so cool. And we absolutely loved the film!
This video was a great nostalgia trip for me. I was really into LEGO in the late 90’s early 2000’s. I had the throwbots and the early Bionicle. I even wrote to LEGO and was able to get the happy meal toys I missed mailed to my house. I stopped when the redesigns of the main characters came out - my mom was annoyed that I was going into high school and asking for LEGO for Christmas / Birthdays plus my little brother and sister were born in 2001 and 2002 and started getting into my stuff so my LEGO toys got packed away. I still have most of my Bionicles packed away, I should find them and put them up for display one day.
I personally never was into Bionicle when it was good. But hey, I did find intact Takanuva and Makuta at my local antique mall a few years ago. Those two look great on my shelf. Plus, I acquired all 7 great kanoka disks, (yes, I’m counting the disk of time in that), and a very nice shadow Kraata for my Makuta’s chest Kraata compartment. Now then, I’m off to go enjoy staring at them some more. Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
Great overview. Those knees were pretty sweet at the time, so many more fight poses. You could’ve shown the instructions.. now that would be nostalgic. They’d have special super builds that would need parts from multiple sets.
Man does this takes me back, me and my best friend would play with our Bionicles all the time I think we were possibly the only ones in our year group who liked them but it was almost ever lunch time. We didn't have the internet at home but he did so when I got to go the his place we would watch the little on line series and play the game what great memories.
I have like 2 huge crates filled with bionicle pieces at home. When I was a kid I spent hours creating my own huge bionicles that looked like dark creatures and demons and stuff. I would literally sit there for hours and days on end just creating a single one. Rinse and repeat. No other kid in my school or neighbourhood did that. I even used to sell my own creations on fleamarkets and made pretty good money from it for my age. I built and took apart the original bionicles so often too, that I could just build them from the top of my head. My favorites were probably the white Rahkshi, Makuta, Brutaka(my all time favorite) and Axonn and Keetongu. But I literally had almost all Bionicles. The movies were also so freaking cool, especially the first one. They even had comics(or magazines), if I recall corectlly(at least here in germany). This is such a throwback. Love it.😊❤
Onua (mata) had such a huge impact on me as a kid. He was my first Bionicle and so much about him affected my developing child-brain. I molded my personality to imitate his silent but wise demeanor. The way he was always stuck in the background of all the promotions, yet was the strongest toa of them all, helped give me confidence despite my lack of popularity/friends. Earth is always my go-to element for any videogame/media. It’s crazy looking back on all this now.
I'm a very simple man, I see Bionicle I click. What a franchise. Praise the Great Spirit.
Unity, Duty, Destiny.

Thank you so much for making this video! A lot of great memories came flooding back in to my mind! Between the figures, Mask of Light movie, and the GameCube game it was truly a great time to be a kid and love Lego!!!!!
Bionicles are Beyblades in humanoid form
I can't explain why but this comment offended me.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. I like to go on Bionicle nostalgia trip every few months, so this video was perfectly timed.
0:26 well that’s partly false stuff like Star Wars in franchise things that Lego brought also contributed to it and other sort of things too
This video sparked emotions, nostalgia and memories I had forgotten. Thank you.
Just remembered sitting in my grandmas living room assembling one of those after I convinced her to get me another one. Meanwhile she'd be in the kitchen making some chocolate pudding. Man, I miss being 6 years old.
Do a video of the Batman Arkham Games!
please continue this stuff!!! I LOVED Bionicle as a kid and I remember mostly the stuff that came next
Anyone remember hero factory from Lego
Oh my god I had completely forgotten about all the different versions and series. This video made me remember so many awesome childhood memories, thank you!
🦾🗿
Great video! I love a lego vid when the collector clearly has all the kits they are talking about. Throwbots are my favorite!
Love bionicle and your channel man
I was 7 at the time of Bionicle's rise to fame. Man, I had almost all of them. Begged my parents to get me the ones I wanted! This video was awesome and put me in full nostalgic mode. Brought back great memories for me. Thank you!
thank you for bringing up such sweet memories
Thx for the memory lane video
As a kid born 1993 I was the perfect age to appreciate LEGO's launch of Bionicle.
I received the very first Bionicle comic from my monthly LEGO magazine subscription (2001, I think), and was instantly obsessed with getting a Toa of my own.
I remember hoping to get Lewa, but settling for Kopaka as my first, since he was what was available in store shelves when mom took me looking.
I still have portions of my collection.
I played the 2003 video game (there was also a gameboy advance version not mentioned here; you could play as the OG Toa), and can quote the Mask of Light movie to this day lol ("unity, duty, destiny!")
I drifted once the shift from Bohrok/Rakshi to Metro Nui happened. Will always have found memories of Bionicle shepherding me through childhood.
Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Man this really unlocked some core memories... I think I had almost all of these up until the toa of light, which I don't think I've ever seen. And I remember being so hyped over the gold masks
Flandrew the GOAT! Making a video on Bionicle? DUDE BIONICLE IS LIKE MY FAVORITE THING
Bruh... You unlocked a childhood memory i totally forgot about rock raiders! I actually had the first couple of bioncle magazines when lego magazine gave them for free..... sadly we were in a Christian church and my parents threw them away not a day goes by i wish i ahd them now as a 33 year old theyd be worth a pretty penny
i got all of them back then... uhhh lovely memories. nice video!
The “Move Along” commercial from bionical is one of my earliest memories. That thing rocked so god damn hard back then
Omg this was such a throwback! We would play with these so much in school!
Praise mata nui for this video. I didn't know I needed it today. Please make more!!! So many good video games
I love all the grounded shots in your backyard, that really made the video for me.
Loved the time travel !! Big thanks
Getting to watch a Bionicle video from Kevduit and you made my day great...
Anyone else out here still have “Bionicle dreams”? Where you walk in to a store and discover that they have a ton of Bionicle sets (new and old) and then right as you start throwing them in to your cart, you wake up?
Yes, this seems to be a widespread phenomenon among fans.
I myself had several of these dreams.
Thanks for the video! So cool! Lego definitely needs to revive Bionicles! Maybe as 18+ sets, or more accurately 30+
So many memories coming up that I didn’t know I still had! I loved these dudes.
Oh dude, hearing the names "Slizer" and "Robo Riders" for the first time in like 25 years made my neo-cortex hurt.
Love it.😊❤
It seems we all have the same childhood. I love your videos!
This video was hilarious. Just the subtle dry humor combined with how goofy bionicles look in hind sight made this peak comedy
Bionicle needs to make a comeback!
