  • For those of you who only know about this song through Pearl Jam's truncated tribute, Brudda Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and the Makaha Sons of Niihau break it down so thoroughly, that even a haole like you will understand its true meaning.
    Ua mau ke ea o ka `âina i ka pono `o Hawai'i

    Hawaii needs to be a free country and not a star on some other country's flag ! I've never been there but I think Hawaii must be free ! This song is about the anguish of a conquered people. May they once again be free.

    "Haole" is not a color, nor a nationality.. it is an attitude. Some with pale skin, like myself, carry hearts that are Hawaiian. We feel the aina, we feel the pain of the Kanaka, they are our brothers and sisters.

    "Peacefully changed the direction of the island?" "Peacefully?" Really? Have you forgotten the injustices/indignities suffered by Queen Lili'uokalani & her supporters?

    @Shaysailor Use the system that stole your freedom in the first place? That works about as well as asking your kidnapper to set you free.
    Still, if an Egypt like grab for freedom could happen anywhere in America, it would be Hawaii.

    took? Kuleana... No one can buy unless someone, the owner sells! Auwe! Modern world, kids need jobs, if not they end up in Halawa,
    If someone is mean, or gives you da hana ino, love them. Smile, look them in the eye, "malama kou loko maika'i aikane". I am one the few, not Haole, but Kane Ke'o ke'o, that can read, write, and speak Haw'n. I learned it from a 90 yer old Kane in the 80's Everyday we spoke. The Alzheimer got worse, and I translated for his ohana. No hana ino, malama pono:)

    I don't understand why Hawaii is a part of the USA. I can get to foreign countries faster. I think it's sad that Hawaii was taken over, but if not for our military it would probably be a third world country. The majority of the people in Hawaii are very poor. It's too late to give them back their island now. It's ruined with high rises, tourism, and traffic. It's still very beautiful. This song touches my heart and makes me sad.

    haole is what I am according to some Hawaiians. I am caucasian but feel for the people of Hawaiian. They did not know the true meaning of hypocites when the plantation owners were in their mists. They trusted because they thought that the Christians were honest (im Christian) some give Christians a bad name. They were duped by slick, smooth talking, GREEDY people. And for this I am so sorry. We took a country and made it part of ours. But visited big island and fell in love.

    Read my description and comments again and tell me where I "presume to speak for Hawaiians", because I believe that I never did such a thing.
    I posted a song of HAWAIIANS speaking for the Hawaiians.

    Когда англичане открыли Гавайи, коренное полинезийское население уменьшилось с 300 000 до 3000 от болезней, завезенных европейцами. Затем Гавайи были силой захвачены США. После этого туда завезли китайцев, японцев и филипинцев. Желаю гавайцам свободы от любого государства и иметь собственную, свободную страну!

    @joepod  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @quick225silver Are you talking to me? Because I'm not Hawaiian at all, and I am lumping myself in with the rest of the haole who took their country away from the Hawaiians. At least I am offering my sincere apology.

  • @LawtyBobby

    a Haole, non Hawaiian...but has come to mean a white person. I never hear a Japanese or Chinese person called a Haole....without breath...whatever that means....

    • @vickiolson2012
      @vickiolson2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Japanese makes up more of their tourism than white haoles. I lived there for four years. They really don't calls us Haoles out of kindness, most of them do not like us. They treat you really well when you are a tourist because we give them money. I have vacationed there twice after moving, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the best time of my life and my daughter was born there. The people of Hawaii aren't so friendly when you live there.

    Because I am a member of another ethnic minority. And I recognize liberal guilt when I see it or read it. Your phrase "the rest of the haole who took their country away from the Hawaiians" is fraught with liberal guilt. It would have been better and been more respectful if you had simply kept quiet.
