Mana Maoli is excited and honored to reveal our next "Song Across Hawaiʻi"! 40 years after it was composed by a teenager on Hawaiʻi island, 100ʻs of youth from 14 schools + 40 artists recorded this song live @ 29 LOCATIONS across 4 ISLANDS. Over a year later, we share with you their rendition of this timeless classic, with an unforgettable message.

While still in high school, Mickey Ioane composed "Hawaiʻi '77", a mele Aloha ʻĀina that quickly spread across Hawaiʻi, when the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau recorded and popularized the song as "Hawaiʻi '78". Israel Kamakawiwo'ole "IZ" further took the song beyond Hawaiʻi's shores.

This is more than just an epic music video. Our Hawaiian charter schools are innovative leaders in culture, community & kaina (kai/ocean + ʻāina) based education. From underground to well-renowned, these artists are among over 200 'Mana Maoli Collective' musicians, engineers and filmmakers who donate their time as role models and mentors to our youth, as part of the Mana Mele Project.
Mana Mele teaches ABCʻs - Academics, Business and Culture - through a Music & Multimedia Academy, and a state-of-the-art, solar mobile studio named Meleana. She also provides live event & studio services to businesses and the public, as a means to feed our programs while providing youth real-world learning environments.

Samuel Mānaiakalani Kamakau (S.M. Kamakau usually) made a profound statement: He and the Hawaiian Historical Society (which included King Kamehameha III) saw what the US government had done to other true natives of the lands where colonialists plundered. They resolved to record the all of the history of Hawai'i, lest it becomes forgotten, lest they become a people without a history like too many Native North American nations and peoples.
He is a champion of scholarship, a champion of all peoples whose past has been stolen from their memories. Never regret this pride, always see this connection. E man, my Armenian ancestors destroyed their own history in the Bible, then later stolen by the Turkish People. It's a scary thing to not know how far your people have come, where they have come from, the importance of their natural landmarks, and of course to feel the pressure of culture thieves on your people's own past.

When my grandma moved to the states she said she never wanted to go back to hawai'i because she said all she saw was her home being destroyed. There was no more beauty and aloha anymore. She passed away on December 31st 2016. I wish she was still here to see the whole world support hawai'i in these times, I'm sure she would be proud. Rest in peace and paradise grandma Fonoimoana...

As a haole I was given the honor of becoming Godmother to 2 Hawaiian children. Chicago is my home but Hawaii is my heart. I feel the depth of sadness that has come with statehood . My heart is heavy for the Hawaiian people. I support whatever has to happen to give the land rights back to them.

I am a Alaskan Inupiat, "Eskimo". I was on top of the Mt. on my Christmas break I cried an ended up sobbing like I was in a funeral, I felt an heard the elders crying. Wondered why there was no Alaskan flag hanging. I want to go back with an Alaskan flag and camp out with the rest of the Hawaiians would be worth it all. Thanks for sharing.

I am 4th generation born and raised in Hawaii. Above all else, Hawaii is my heart and soul. I will forever be deeply in love with my Hawaii nei and I thank all of my brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, kumu, etc - Hawaii is so misunderstood and we were tricked by the mainland. We were never "10 years behind the mainland" - I live in California now and I finally understand that in Hawaii, we are DECADES AHEAD of the entire world in terms of community, connection to nature, pride in culture, and knowing who we are. To all my Hawaii people - STAND UP, we are leaders on this earth and especailly in these crazy times. Our childhoods, the hanabadda days, was our gift from ke akua. We were blessed to have grown up in the islands and I spread aloha everyday as much as I can. Its scary living out here in babylon surrounded by pilau people, but my Hawaii gives me the strength to REMEMBER what I was taught and to keep one foot in the sand. I am tearing as I read this because I know the Hawaii I grew up in is no longer there... Its only a memory now - but US, the people of Hawaii from the 80s-early 2000s, we need to keep our local culture going. The culture created by our elders is precious and unique. Never forget where you came from and for real appreciate how we were raised. We are experts in community, love, and togetherness - took me nearly 30 years to internalize that FACT. On April 24, 2019 I was driving past the palace and this song came on. I stopped near the Kamehameha statue, I looked towards the room Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned in then looked around and began crying to see what has become of our Hawaii nei. Seeing this video brought me back to that moment. That moment when I felt as if our Ali’i was crying for what has happened to their people. To see such passion and mana in this video left me speechless.

Like others who have claimed the same ideal, Israel K was flat wrong with that statement. This is why Hawai'i was taken. There is one type of human like the indigenous native, and a different type of human like the war-thirsty conquerors. There are still more types we live with in the world. I'm swiss. In november 18 we visited the islands of oahu, hawai'i and maui. Before we went there, I planned our visit and discovered the culture of hawai'i. It's not only hollywood,surf and sunshine. No, there is so much more! I fell in love with the aina and as we flight back to switzerland, i almost cryed. Met so much gentle people, and I know, I live in switzerland. But I know, I'm hawaiian by the heart.... I know, I was only a guest for 3 weeks, and I hope, that the native aren't in anger with my words.

I am an italian/german/sinti girl that has never been to Hawaii....... Unfortunately....... But if I hear this song.. I feel "hawaiian". Hawaii deserves positivity and support! Spread love and honor our ancestors, malama i ka 'aina. TAKE ACTION and do your research to care and protect the 'aina and keep Hawaiian culture alive. Some may hold a grudge and bitterness against "foreigners" but that's not going to change the past or what shit is going on now.
I'v met a lot of non-Hawaiians born in Hawaii and people from the mainland who immerse themselves in the culture and work at cultural sites to keep the stories and culture alive. There's parks, arboretums, botanical gardens, fishponds, forest where conservationist and volunteers from the community that are doing their best to protect sacred sites and bring native plants back to restore the real Hawaii and share the culture with others. Yea, it could be better but at least there's people out there trying and there needs to be more people like that.
Our Queen's motto was “E 'Onipa'a i ka 'imi na'auao”- Be steadfast in the seeking of knowledge. And the people are taking action regarding the Hawaiian Homestead Act and the poisonous water pollution the military bases and weapons have given back to the people. Shameful! My sister is bitter because they keep changing the blood percentage needed to be declared half Hawaiian. The list grows longer. But she is slowly becoming more aware that she can do things differently rather than doing things the same. Aloha & Mahalo
Hawaii has changed so much in my own lifetime. I grew up in Honolulu through the late 60s and seventies, and then went to University of Hawaii Manoa. Great times. Now there's homelessness and more violence and drugs. Its sad. But there's also more of an appreciation of what it means to be Hawaiian- the traditions, culture, history and land. Hold fast to that my brothers and sisters.

I'm from the other side of the world and I'm in tears listening and watching this video, for so many reasons. I love Hawaiian culture, language, music, dance, myths ... Please, don't lose who you are, your roots, your lands, culture and voices, NEVER. Same for the rest of Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian people. And it should be the same for the rest of the world. We're a rich planet, we should take care of it, of our house and our many many cultures.

I just listened to this song since it was released. It's so emotional. I'm a history and Sociology major and I've studied so much abt Hawaii and its history. And how our own Pasifika Scholars the late Haunani Kay-Trask fought for the colonial power and free Hawaii from those Colonial power and influence

im not in any way Polynesian, hawaiian, anything. im a white man, yet my grandpa was a huge supporter of the hawaiian sovereignty movement, he lived there his whole life until a few years after i was born and he came back to texas. hes inspired me to learn all about the hawaiian culture. i listen to this song too much, really makes me sympathize. you can feel the mana in this song it makes me oh so happy and yet so ashamed of america. once i get out of highschool i really want to become part of the hawaiian sovereignty movement. so, for what it is worth, coming from a 17 year old white boy, my heart is with you all. aloha, god bless.

Its sad that those who are the leaders are not protecting the heritage and culture of the Islands. Those of us who would like to visit someday don't want it to resemble any other place. I think every country should keep this in mind to value their uniqueness instead of trying to copy other places.

Yes! It is happening here in Canada as well. The young generation of indigenous are completely aware and can see the pain & suffering that our elders have lived through... and are joining together. It’s happening more and more everyday and it’s a lovely thing to see.

No matter how many times I watch this video, I always manage to cry. Those tears are tears of injustice and pain for our Polynesian family. Hawai'i and all the islands are more than a place to take your family for a vacation. They have been robbed of their culture and life. But no matter how much of our culture they take, Polynesia is strong.

I feel so much for this song. It made me realize that we are changing so much and I am so happy that we are making a stand. Our islands are changing so fast and much of the culture is disappearing. I praise this song as it reflects not only Hawai'i but the islands that we call home. I, from the Micronesian islands, praise everyone that is making a difference whether it be small or big because it all matters.

I hope so too. On my trip in the Big Island I got to see the protest in Muana Kea. Locals are fighting to protect the sacred burial grounds but America wants to build another observatory there for University of California and Cal Tech research...
As a UC alumni, I am sad to see me school supports something like this. I think if this situation spreads more awareness online, a lot of students in California will help protest against this too.

Moving to Mau'i and Hawai'i from Chicago and assimilating myself into the Hawaiian culture was a huge eye opener! The Hawaiian people are so humble and was taken in by so many Hawaiian people. Truly touched to see this beautiful collab. I love this song growing up and man seeing how times have changed on the island. Being born and raised, I see how terrible the land is being taken away. With new buildings, houses, rail, etc. Not only that but the people who have come to live and visit the island. Some have come to live and disrespect the island by leaving trash, graffiti, destroy the nature and wild life. And those who come to visit have no class but to do the same. Its terrible, its sickening; and the countless times the natives fight and remind who the land and islands truly belong to goes strong but those who don't belong never truly takes it to heart or listen. Keep fighting is all that we should do!

I came across this song recently from my very first trip to The Big Island. And this songs reflects so much on what I see. There are so many Americans here trashing and disrespecting the Island. I can see why they made a song like this about foreigners changing the land. I see more Americans in the Big Island than Native Hawaiians.

I am Caucasian, lived on the Big Island, Makapala, for 18 years. From the very beginning I tuned in to the history, the depth of the spirituality and culture, as much as I possibly could being an outsider. And maybe I had lived there before in another time. I cannot listen to this music without sobbing because I remember all the feelings and they are alive inside of me although I am not there now. The capacity to feel the land on which I lived and walked, is not something I experience any more, and it is truly missed. I hold a lot of that in my heart still. Thank you, Mahalo.
