2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Review / "That's the V8 one"

  • The fans asked for it, and Ford responded. After the previous generation Ford F-150 Raptor was omitted with a V8 engine, the new 2023 Ford F150 Raptor has a V8 once again under the hood. So is this Raptor V8 better than the other “Super truck” on sale today; the Ram TRX?
    The V8 under the hood of the F-150 Raptor R is no ordinary V8. It is a 5.2L supercharged V8 from the Shelby GT500. Albeit, the engine had to be tuned to be more truck friendly so it doesn’t produce quite as much power as it does in the GT500. But it’s still a potent 700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque (522 kW & 868 Nm). With the truck tipping the scales at 2,756 kg (6,077 lbs), it can still accelerate from a stop to 60 mph (96 km/h) in about 3.7 seconds. No matter how you look at it, that is seriously fast. It almost boggles the mind seeing and feeling something this big accelerate so quickly. The top speed is limited to about 185 km/h.
    Of course with such a big engine and such a big truck, fuel economy is going to be worse than dreadful. Officially the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R is rated for 22.8 L/100km (10.3 MPG) in a city and 15.9 L/100km 14.8 MPG) on a highway.
    Like the other supertruck on sale today, the 2023 Ford F-150 raptor R is expensive. The V6 Raptor starts at $105,275 CAD ($76,775 USD). The Raptor R Supercharged V8 is part of a package that will cost you $40,730 CAD ($30,575 USD). With a few extras added on, this demo truck came equipped at a price of $149,955 CAD ($110,140 USD).

    The super charged whine is subtle on the RAPTOR R that's how I like it.

    I love that the Raptor R has a rwd option for drifting dirt roads if you choose to do so, where the TRX is only all time 4wd. I think the TRX has a better SC sound, better interior & heads up display. But I’m a Ford guy & my 23 Raptor R is scheduled for 4-3-23 delivery date. I’ll keep driving my 22 Raptor until it arrives.

      Nice! Did you have to pay dealer markup for the R or did they offer it at MSRP?

      @@MGReviewsBlog I had to pay $10k mark up but I’m not complaining after seeing what most people had to pay.

      Good luck! I ordered mine going on 11 months ago. Scheduled delivery date?? Lol that is funny. I had a build week date, chip hold wait date. Scheduled delivery date. Surpassed all said dates. Ordered mine on day one of banks opening.

    They tuned it for more low end torque. Yes on paper the GT500 puts out more power but most of its power comes on the top end vs the Raptor tuned V8 where the power comes in a a lower RPM.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, as I said in the video, it's tuned to be more "truck friendly" haha

  • @lunamaria1048

    The Raptor R sounds great, but tbh it sounds more like a modern muscles car, or German V8 sports car and not like a "truck". The TRX sounds like a proper truck, truck.
    That is just my personal opinion, obviously!

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. The Raptor R does sound different than the TRX. It sounds more "modern" like a current generation Mustang. I know that the 5.2L engine uses a cross-plane crankshaft but I'm not sure what type of crank the TRX uses (if someone else can chime in). But either way, I think they both sound awesome :)

      The V6 loop to loop exhaust design was so good that the sound of the V8 is not that far, and you are definitely right the Raptor R sounds like a race car not like the TRX sounds muscle truck.

    • @lunamaria1048
      @lunamaria1048 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ilocanodetoy2225 I just read that Ford bench-marked the Nissan GTR exhaust for the gen 3 V6 Raptor. Another car sound, cool or not lol. The gen 2 sounded worse than a Corolla!

    • @jimh.412
      @jimh.412 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is different sounding exhaust modes you can control from the steering wheel.

    You mentioned it didn't have Blue Cruise, but I thought I saw the two seniors needed for it. So I went back and it was at 1:51 and they are there. So are they only on your demo model?

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I noticed that too. I thought it had it when i pickup up the truck and went onto a highway where Blue Cruse worked in the Mach-E GT that I tried it in before. But this truck just had the regular lane centering, not Blue Cruise. I looked all over their press material too and no mention of it. I can only assume that the sensors are there for some driver attention aware or perhaps in the future Ford can add it on to the Raptor R. If it already has the sensors, then Blue Cruise is just a software download.

    I prefer the sound of turbos to superchargers

  • @apexresidences6815
    @apexresidences6815 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Does a supercharger help with increasing air flow into the engine the way a turbo or twin turbo does? Or put another way, does a supercharger help performance in any way similar to a turbo or twin turbo compared to a naturally aspirated engine at high altitudes? Is that "quiet mode" also in the regular raptor, not just the raptor r?

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A supercharger does the same thing as a turbocharger, it forces air into the engine. But a supercharger is driven by the engine so it requires power to produce power. This makes it not as efficient as a turbocharger. However it does not require as many components to function so it is a bit less complicated than a turbo setup.
      As for the quiet mode, I have not driven the standard Raptor so i cannot comment on that. Perhaps an owner on here can comment on that part.

      I don't mind their electric cars & SUVs but I just recently drove the F-150 Lightning and I can't see that truck being good for truck stuff like towing and carrying a lot of payload over long distances.
