  • Last year, the Lexus RX entered its 5th generation and it came with the usual updates that are bestowed upon new vehicles. Now, we’re getting the 2024 Lexus RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid. But at almost $90,000 CAD, or roughly $70,000 USD, is it worth the price tag?
The 2024 RX450h+ is powered by a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that is aided by a few electric motors. This powertrain is the same one that is found in the NX450h+. The engine produces 181 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque (134 kW & 224 Nm) on its own. With the addition of the electric motors, total output is 304 hp (227 kW).
If you drive the 2024 Lexus RX450h+ like a normal hybrid, then it will return 6.5 L/100km (36.2 MPG) in a city and 7.1 L/100km (33.1 MPG) on a highway. With consistent plug-ins and short trips, the actual fuel economy can be very good and not require any fuel fill ups for weeks at a time. I averaged 2.2L /100km (107 MPG) during my time with the car.
The 2024 Lexus RX450h+ is rated for 60 km (37 miles) of electric-only driving range. I managed to squeeze out 63 km (39 miles) out of the 18.1 kWh battery pack. From a level 2 charger, the RX450h+ can be fully recharged in about 2 and a half hours. From a normal wall outlet, it could take 10 to 12 hours to fully recharge from 0% to 100%.

Another nice review! Thank you. It was your frank NX 350h review a couple of years ago that helped me decide to buy that one. This RX looks like a winner in my opinion.

Nice video thanks. Do you know how the MPGs compare in normal hybrid vs battery charging modes? Would be interested to know how much it costs in petrol to charge the battery vs from a home mains charger.

I didn't switch it to the battery charge mode for too long. But from what I've noticed in other PHEVs where I ran in this mode for a long period, the fuel economy increase by about 3 to 5 L/100km (around 10-12 MPG or so) and you're not getting a whole lot of energy back into the battery. Maybe something like 2% for every 4 km of driving on a highway. It's the most efficient way of driving the car or any PHEV. It is most cost effective to recharge it from a level 2 charger or a wall outlet overnight.

@@MGReviewsBlog UK. when the battery went flat the car went on to self charging, over a 200+ mile day driving it averaged 48 mpg and kept at that even though battery had gone down, the self charging is incredible, and it stil had th excellent acceleration. plenty fast enough and corners extremely flat, needles to say I am ordering one!

I'm a fan of Lexus and their current lineup but I don't know if I can justify the price of this RX if I were in the market for one. Great review nonetheless!

True, the price is a hard pill to swallow. Hopefully next year's model will introduce lower, & less expensive, trim levels for this car.

Not here in Canada. This 450h is more expensive than the 500h.
