Sibelius violin concerto is an adventure, and what made this performance impeccable was the excitement being generated with Shoji's extraordinary energy.
Sibelius' Concerto may not need added passion over what it possesses of its own, but there is no doubt about the devotion, straightforwardness and sincerity which Sayaka displays in her performance. Sibelius would be deeply moved watching this young violinist from Japan performing his masterpiece. There can be no bigger accolade for a composer than seeing his work praised by young musicians all over the globe one century after its composition.
In the light of the very many talented performers of today, this performance is indeed (and justified) on the very high end. The sound is incredible, emotion, passion - everything is on the defined place. LSO and the veteran Colin Davis added their quality to this supreme rendition of Jean Sibelius' concerto.
>> This performance is on the very high end. @zzp1 But how did that happen? Don't orchestras these days tune rather meticulously to a standard A = 440Hz?
This violin concerto is one of my favourite works as far as violin concertos are concerned. What charm, modesty and sheer brilliance we have shown to us in this performance by Shoji. Why do we not hear and see more of this wonderful artist?. Anthony Sharp
Ps… Tons of other very accomplished violinists have done this piece. None, whatsoever, NONE have come close to her performance… NONE. She is the best at this piece hands down at skill, tone, passion and understanding of this piece. Well Done. Very, VERY well done.
The slow movement, which starts at 18.15, is particularly ethereal. The incomparable delicacy of the sculpting of the vibrato sections bringing the rapt expressions of the conductor and the soloist are just exquisite; the viola player sitting behind seems to be blinking away tears of disbelief through much of this wonderful movement.
OMG! What a fiddler!!! Once upon a time, when I was in my prime, I could put my whole body into a passage or a series or notes....back when I was a fiddler in various bands....Watching her play is in and of itself a sublime experience..
Incredible intense performance by Shoji, you feel each note! , wonderful orchestra, lots of moods and colors - definitely one of my favorite sibelius-performances.
Love this a bit more each time. Sayaka, then in her twenties, still looks every bit the lovely, adorable child of her teenage years. Every facet of her screams quiet intensity.
She is without a doubt a musical genius. The intensity is unrivaled (I get tired only by looking at her physical activity), the musicality and technique (not orthodox) too.
Lady Sayaka, I love the way You feel this music of one of my most beloved composers! Thank You! Your's sincerely - JV, musician himself, but another level
Sibelius's violin concerto performed by Sayaka Shoji is a wonderful performance that makes me feel even the forests, lakes, and air of Northern Europe, In addtion, the London Philharmonic is performing with a sense of rhythm, and is performing with a wonderful performance in harmony with Sayaka Shooji. The one who excels is the cconductor, Colin Davis, who conducts with all sprits so that the performance of Syyaka Shoji can proceed well. Just like seeing his daughter! Many times listen, I'm impressing with the wonderful performance.
I would love to see and hear her playing in that Paganini competition (must look for their website and for archives of previous performances). There is no doubting her technical skills despite her tiny hands, and definitely no doubts about her interpretive abilities if this performance is anything to go by. Truly one of the my favorite performances of this concerto. Brava!
Sheesh.... 34:05 and on... Tell me that the beauty that flows off her bow just does not make the hair on your neck stand straight out! I swear that I saw sparks fly off her bow more than once.... WOW! JUST WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Note the incredible sound of Mme Shoji's instrument. London Symphony obviously doesn't play around with bad sound but this is quite excellent for YT standards. Mme Shoji is almost a benchmark for the present generation.
This is a miracle. Something is haunting her. She recently performed well with Israel, but it was not a miracle. Here the co-performers gradually realize the descent of God and become serious,,
There are many interesting episodes of Shoji in Japan. Her first solo recital was in summer in 1996,at Fuchu, suburb town of Tokyo, where 800audience packed in the hall . She received Rostropovich's Master class lesson ,4th.Jan.1997. She was a middle school student(Gl) of Kokubunnji ,Tokyo. She was awarded in a student composition contest ,too.where she claimed the necessity of the efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of her native town Kokubunnji.
I knew her name, famous in Japan, but actually didn't know her performance ...that's so amazing. Every note makes me cry, although I rarely listen to violin concertos.
Your description is always so vivid! You already saw?(Eng.Sub)Sayaka Shoji&Yuri Temirkanov Interview. This is very interesting. She is an unprecedented intelligent violinist.
Curiosity about a 16-year old Paganini winner drew me into this strange world where one is not considered as having had a smashing time unless one has gone through a whole box of Kleenex and has had one's perspective warped! I have listened transfixed by Shoji through so many masterpieces, almost all of them for the first time, in their entireties. I have also learned that a soloist need not necessarily mean Jimmy Page! The eternal gratitude of a leftover Zeppelin diehard to Shoji for the passport to her planet from which I may never leave.
In June 1999 (a few months earlier becoming the first Japanese to win Paganini competition) Sayaka took part in Viotti Valsesia Violin and Orchestra International Competition getting the first prize: she performed Sibelius Concerto. The Jury and the whole staff (I worked for) of the contest couldn't believe such a young girl (despite her true age she still looked like a little girl) could play so well.
A fantastic performance! She has a real dramatic flare along with the technical and musical abilities. I see the performance was in 2004. What were the orchestra and conductor? I ordered one of her concerto recordings recently -- Tchaikovsky D major and Mendelssohn E minor, but I was disappointed that I couldn't find a recording of the Sibelius by her.
Please look at "Sayaka Shoji discography" Unfortunately she doesn't record Sibelius yet. I have all her CDs except Tcaikovsky's concerto. In this concert 2004 in Kyoto, the conductor was Colin Davis .And the orchestra , LSO. PS. Her Bach&Reger ,and Shostakovich's concerto are my best favorite. I will be very glad if I can read your comment on them.
MGH cnsGABA I am a new comer and fall in love with Shoji's playing intermediately when I first listened to this. I am just wondering if these CDs (that imported from Japan) will play on regular music play as I saw from Amazon saying the format is in Japan CD. Thanks for the feedback.
Is it her violin problem or the orchestra is a bit louder? Her violin voice did not really soar out to the hall. Anyway I like her interpretation of Sibelius.
I respect understanding of Manuela Santos and of AndMakrid,2013/01/19. I feel this is an elegy.I imagine layers of grief over there. In my taste ,I don't like neatest and emotionless versions of this piece.
i think she is so exhausted after so many concerts, some bowing was not present well..anyway, very good!!!!!!!!!!!! I would prefer her Brahms concerto, and Akiko suwanai for sibelius..
This was far less interesting than the Brahms. The music ought to suit her well but she turned it into a show of bitterness- the amazing technique and glide is there but I wonder if the snooty nastiness of the LSO didn't help on this occasion.
Wow. It's one thing to not be taken by her playing, people like different things. But dude... she's way, way over the "competition hound" level. Actually, for that matter, I'm not sure any actual "competition hounds" can even PLAY Sibelius's Violin Concerto.

Greatest Sibelius available, best violinist, magnificent acoustic, wonderful conductor and orchestra.
Almost.
When everything is beautiful, Sayaka must be there.

This performance as well as the one she plays with Maestro Paavo Jarvi is outstanding. Shoji pure clean sound. Excellent!!
Great performance! She's a angel! I'm glad they included her bows at the end ...

She's the only violinist who can make me listen to the slow parts. She lovingly sculpts the melody note over note.

The final notes of the second part are the most eloquent and mature I have ever heard.
Incredible intense performance by Shoji, you feel each note! , wonderful orchestra, lots of moods and colors - definitely one of my favorite sibelius-performances.
Small, tiny woman. But the most wonderful violinist I know (including the greats of the previous century).
Outstanding performance !
Hi Antonio! No Italian this time? Where did you learn Japanse? You are - unrightfully - very negative about this genius Japanse violinist.

One of the best performance that I've ever heard!!! Great Job!!!
So Talented and Lovely Lady Shoji!!!
I like your way to play violin. No scratches! You play wonderfully! you're the best!!! lalasoa in Madagascar 2014
Sayaka, c'est tellement beau!!! Merci infiniment.
Thank you Sayaka !!! Thank you !!! Oh, mein Leben profitert von dieser Aufführung...Danke...Danke ....Danke.....
They are swinging sometimes to express grief and pain.Thrilling performance.

super, danke
The violin is an extension of her body, what of course is an extension of the soul. That's what i like to see, not just perfect tecnics.
Amazing, play so nice
I really like this violinist!
Note the incredible sound of Mme Shoji's instrument. London Symphony obviously doesn't play around with bad sound but this is quite excellent for YT standards.
Mme Shoji is almost a benchmark for the present generation.
Almost??? She is the most magnificient violinist living today. And God knows how many talented violinists are out there.
There is a reason why people say that Sayaka Shoji is exceptional, but if you ask me to explain the reason, I can't put it into words.
Rita,
She's so genuine.
Very, very good!
Hells bells she can play!
I especially love the third part for the solo violin.

The best comments for this Sibelius' concerto and Sayaka Shoji in these 2 years,I think, are from Manuela Santos,AndMakrid and Ben White.
Magnifico!
Yes he is Colin Davis
Sir Colin Davis, please....
She was 21years old then.
Try Ligeti’s violin concerto by Shoji at age26 in youtube.
Sayaka es unica!!!
Most appealing.
BRUTAL ...FANTASTICO

35:01 epic and mystic
Is it her violin problem or the orchestra is a bit louder? Her violin voice did not really soar out to the hall. Anyway I like her interpretation of Sibelius.
k grande
Suwanai's Sibelius is one of the best versions out there.
I love Kavakos's version too, especially the 3rd mov't.
the conductor is not clin davis

I respect understanding of Manuela Santos and of AndMakrid,2013/01/19. I feel this is an elegy.I imagine layers of grief over there. In my taste ,I don't like neatest and emotionless versions of this piece.

Have you heard Hilary Hahn's Sibelius? Best in my opinion
@Johnny Appleseed Ya.. Hahn is awesome.. I just compare between Japanese or yellow skin violinist, because the style are different I guess
she really looks tired@@
Dear, of all wonderful solists I have seen and heard, she must be the one with the most energy. 'She looks tired'. Gosh.
i think she is so exhausted after so many concerts, some bowing was not present well..anyway, very good!!!!!!!!!!!! I would prefer her Brahms concerto, and Akiko suwanai for sibelius..
