Just discovered this. Is this the last of the line of the old Russian school? It is absolutely stunning. So musical, So dynamic. This must be not just talent but also a tribute to the Russian school of technique and intelligent teaching, plus years of dedication and self-discipline. And the music making is direct, no nonsense, with no acting, pseudo drama or unnecesary crowd pleasing bodily gyrations. Just a direct line to Sibelius. Tremendous stuff.
yes, very monumental performance indeed, I burst almost every time to tears whenever I hear her playing, knowing her fight to escape terrible life under soviet comunism...This was her only way, music...
She must have been 20 when she performed this and she has so much assurance.... technically perfect.. She is so "Zen" that it looks like anyone could grab a violin and play this....I even prefer this live recording to her recording directed by Seiji Ozawa.....and besides, she speaks 4 or 5 languages....she's just a Genius .......................
My goodness, where to start? Love the left hand. Love the fourth finger. Love a "Sibelius" sounding violin concerto. Love the vibrato. Love the dress. Love the face. Super amazing. So deceptively hard and she "owned" it. How many thousands of hours of hard work it must have taken.
It has not only taken time, this kind of effort is heroic, Sibelius new the instrument, and the total picture of his works is arctic fight in nature, where you have to win to go on living. The hardship of night contrasts days charm.
Fantastic beautiful genius lady!! Watched her live many years ago playing Mendelssohn in Copenhagen Tivoli and it was just a perfect stunning performance!
@@ultimawerewolfbluephoenix9670 Sibelius did not want to offend anyone, so you need to be critical of what he said later in his life. Bustabo did play the Finale very fast, which Sibelius clearly intended it to be.
The best Sibelius violin concerto players are Really=Guila Bustabo( the Queen Tiger!) Viktor Tretjakov( the King!!) Myriam Fried Itzhak Perlman Gidon Kremer live hurricane version not his recording! Leonid Kogan in 1974! The Really bad Sibelius concerto players=Sarah Chang colorless dry thin violin sound like a black and white tv picture! Ann-Sophie Mutter restless! Out of the rhythmic balance all the time! James Ehnes( the weakest Sibelius of all time! Ehnes his Sibelius a horror show
I would argue that Ida Haendel's version is also quite good. Sibelius himself even wrote her a letter and said that he felt fortunate to have found her to interpret his concerto as good as he imagined it upon hearing it on the radio. Also I really Vengerov's and Cho Liang-Lin's versions too. Hilary Hahn also good.
So true! this is one of the really great performances. even among the greats it is seldom to hear such "on point" clarity of pitch, especially in double/triple stops, turns between figures, that seems to be so necessary to this concerto's almost wild harmonic leaps. just beautiful, fiery, but also retains a certain classic elegance . amazing. it doesn't hurt that her demeanor and physical beauty actually come together with the music and performance quality.
Well from Australia 2020 have watched a most wonderful performance and without any other Viktoria plays Sibelius with such conviction to make the master proud Viktoria as I do not play intruments but love classic you certainly are perfect and will continue to follow your performances keep going into the future
They should make a movie of her exciting life, first winning two most prestigious violin competitions, the Sibelius and Tchaikovsky, then deflection to the US from Finland enroute Sweden to US with her lover, not to mention her three children by three men including Claudio Abbado.
Une interprétation qui vous dilate le cœur, qui vous emmène dans un rêve immatériel. La plus belle interprétations avec celle, en juin 1980 de Yuzuko Horigome au Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth de Belgique (1erPrix)
She is wearing her lucky dress - the same one she wore when she won the Tchaikovsky competition. Leonid Kogan taught her how to articulate for great clarity. Her playing technique and style have changed over time, especially her vibrato. She may have won this competition on the basis of her great temperament.
Toinen tämän esityksen virtuoosi on Jorma Panula. Huippukapu. Ja RSOn soitto on tietysti aivan loistavaa. Hauska nähdä 80-luvun silmälasi/hiustyylissä monta tuttua kasvoa...osa valitettavasti jo poistunut keskuudestamme.

The comment by the reviewer who felt she didn't show enough emotion in her playing must have been made by a man in need of a brain transplant. Tom English
Hi Thomas, I just came across this recording and your comments here. I think there are some technical flaws, but are completely understandable and one can completely overlook it for the no non-sense, breathtaking interpretation + execution. That said, I am wondering what you think of the David Oistrakh recording of Sibelius with Rozhdestvensky as conductor and USSR Radio Large Symphony Orchestra?
Even though the orchestra has no sense of line nor care for timbre quality Mullova finds ways to amaze. Must've been really to play with such dantesque entourage.

I'm much, much more impressed with the clarity, intonation, and fire coming from the orchestra than I am the violinist. For the first 6 min. or so of the first mvt. I hear real intonation issues (passing notes). After that Mullova settles down and her playing is mainly distinguished. Cudos to the conductor and his choice of tempos.
Victoria Mullova is the best, I met her 41 years ago in Moscow, Russia. We were at the same school. She was my hero!
Sibelius and Mullova, a marriage in heaven. What a legend she is.
Viktoria Mullova! What a violinist! What a performance! Such passion, such tenderness, such honesty. Absolutely fantastic!

As a German, I say: This is the real "Anne - Sophie Mutter" for me. I mean: She is the female violinist I really admire or even love, in any case.
Ann Sophie Mutter is so restless and out of rhythmic balance all the time! Mutter never played in the big violin competitions and the reason is no prizes for Mutter! Mutter is famous only because Karajan was her friend!!

After this contest she escaped from Soviet Union to West by arrangement to proceed to Sweden. Asylum in Finland was not possible in those days.

To be exact, she deflected in 1983 from Finland during a recital to Sweden then two days later to the US.

How does it compare to Joshua Bell's interpretation?
Both are equally good. Depends on your own taste of interpretation. Personally I prefer a darker, gnarly rendition.
