    Victoria Mullova is the best, I met her 41 years ago in Moscow, Russia. We were at the same school. She was my hero!

    Just discovered this. Is this the last of the line of the old Russian school? It is absolutely stunning. So musical, So dynamic. This must be not just talent but also a tribute to the Russian school of technique and intelligent teaching, plus years of dedication and self-discipline. And the music making is direct, no nonsense, with no acting, pseudo drama or unnecesary crowd pleasing bodily gyrations. Just a direct line to Sibelius. Tremendous stuff.

      yes, very monumental performance indeed, I burst almost every time to tears whenever I hear her playing,knowing her fight to escape terrible life under soviet comunism...This was her only way, music...

    She must have been 20 when she performed this and she has so much assurance.... technically perfect.. She is so "Zen" that it looks like anyone could grab a violin and play this....I even prefer this live recording to her recording directed by Seiji Ozawa.....and besides, she speaks 4 or 5 languages....she's just a Genius .......................

    My goodness, where to start? Love the left hand. Love the fourth finger. Love a "Sibelius" sounding violin concerto. Love the vibrato. Love the dress. Love the face. Super amazing. So deceptively hard and she "owned" it. How many thousands of hours of hard work it must have taken.

      It has not only taken time, this kind of effort is heroic, Sibelius new the instrument, and the total picture of his works is arctic fight in nature, where you have to win to go on living. The hardship of night contrasts days charm.

    So true!
    this is one of the really great performances. even among the greats it is seldom to hear such "on point" clarity of pitch, especially in double/triple stops, turns between figures, that seems to be so necessary to this concerto's almost wild harmonic leaps. just beautiful, fiery, but also retains a certain classic elegance . amazing. it doesn't hurt that her demeanor and physical beauty actually come together with the music and performance quality.

    Toinen tämän esityksen virtuoosi on Jorma Panula. Täydelliset tempot ja ei yhtään turhaa, yleisöä kosiskelevaa liikettä. Kaikki tulee käsistä, pienieleisesti - orkesterin fortekohdat pidetään aisoissa sivistyneen maltillisilla vihjauksilla (ei kyyristytä telineen taakse niinkuin joillain "huippukapuilla" on tapana). Huippukapu. Ja RSOn soitto on tietysti aivan loistavaa. Hauska nähdä 80-luvun silmälasi/hiustyylissä monta tuttua kasvoa...osa valitettavasti jo poistunut keskuudestamme.

    She is wearing her lucky dress - the same one she wore when she won the Tchaikovsky competition. Leonid Kogan taught her how to articulate for great clarity. Her playing technique and style have changed over time, especially her vibrato. She may have won this competition on the basis of her great temperament.

    @thomasenglish4859 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I won't list the other recordings I have of the Sibelius Concerto, but her recording with Ozawa and the BSO is superior to all. The only flaw is the Phillips sound which they had remedied for a while with a 25 bit stream remastering. The current performance is surprising only in that the depth of the emotion in the performance doesn't show up in her facial expression. The comment by the reviewer who felt she didn't show enough emotion in her playing must have been made by a man in need of a brain transplant.

      Hi Thomas, I just came across this recording and your comments here. I think there are some technical flaws, but are completely understandable and one can completely overlook it for the no non-sense, breathtaking interpretation + execution. That said, I am wondering what you think of the David Oistrakh recording of Sibelius with Rozhdestvensky as conductor and USSR Radio Large Symphony Orchestra?
