Proud owner of the X-S10 here. I must say fujifilm did exactly what i was hoping for. Included 10-bit 4:2:2, open-gate 6.2K video recording, new double capacity battery and much upgraded autofocus. What more could i wish for? It's a complete package in my opinion. I only wish they made the body weather resistant. Thanks for a great review.
I agree with you. I too was an X-S10 owner. After seeing what the X-S20 was capable of, I immediately put my camera up for sale before it lost its value and successfully sold it. And I will wait for the new camera to appear in my country and immediately buy it. I think this is a perfect camera for this price.
A great second body to the XH2S for those not working full time as professionals. Really happy to see this camera a reality. For video work, it's a way more affordable option to partner with the XH2S for some of us.
this is a travel and reportage hybrid masterpiece, it ticks all the boxes, including the now almost always discarded built-it flash....if they add also a high res pixel shift function via a firmware update it would be really perfect...

This will be the 1st Fuji I buy since the XT3. I was tempted by the XH2 but I'm mainly interested in stills. The only reason why I didn't care for the XS10 was the battery life.
Ahahah, Chris's surprizing appearance here was brilliant) Eleven years later after I discovered your channel you keep the same level of quality! So nice some things stay the same in this world)
Finally…a Cameralab review on the new Fuji…and a comprehensive one at that! Well done! Actually short of effective IBIS for video and weather sealing it ticks most boxes, so if not a run and gun, all weather outdoor shooter likely one of the best choices. I did think that it looked a bit weird (sci- fi like) using the new lens…but suspect that is simply too wide of a lens in this case (subjective).
How is "Auto subject detection" not a thing in their other, MORE expensive models? 🤯 I kind of doubt we'll ever get it, but this feature should also come to the other cameras. Having to go into a menu to change subjects just isn't practical.
I am enjoying all your reviews. Thanks heaps! I have a Fujifilm X-A2 for ages now but have recently bought Instax Wide Printer, Instax sq6 and S-20. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your knowledge.
I've been massively impressed with my X-S10. It does lack the character of previous Fuji cameras I've owned, but more than makes up for it in features. Thanks very much for the great review Gordon.
I wasn't aware of the auto subject detect only working when in full auto mode. That is silly. I agree with you. We need auto subject detect when in aperture priority mode, manual mode, etc.
Yes, I'd like to do some comparisons between all three sensors with the same image processor. I'd expect them to be very similar in style, but you never know!
Hi Gordon, great to finally see your review on this new camera. One question I have, in full auto mode on detecting lat us say a dog, will the camera also select an appropriate shutter speed? Like increase the ISO to be ble to use 1/1000 sek? Thanks for the in depth review.
I think they did it because the normal menus were already written and they didn't have time or budget to change them plus they assumed people didn't mind. i hope they can change this
Both very good options. There's so many pros and cons to them both, not to mention the styling and lens selection. You'd have to go through the features to see if anything stands out as important to you personally. Video AF is better on the Canon, but I really like the 6.2k open gate mode on the Fujifilm.
@@cameralabs Thank you, Gordon! Yes, at least on TH-cam it appears the R50 image looks a bit better. Of course the stabilization on the R50 is junk and better stabilization on the Fuji, so that’s its main advantage that I see. I’m leaning toward R50 for better price and sharper/cleaner image. I’ll also have to turn down contrast a lot because both cameras appear to have way too much contrast in standard color profiles.
Looking at the feature set combined with my own knowledge of the Fuji Eco system. Then yes what more could they have offered? Looking at the list price. That is damn close to what an X-T3 used to cost at launch. So is it actually a mid range camera? For me it’s more like what the Nikon 7200 was under the D500. En enthusiast but not professional grade camera. That can do everything you could possibly ask.
would love to see more recording limits testing, if the recording time limits is still limited, then it means my time with fuji is over and jump to sony for this reason.
You didn't mention it so maybe it doesn't exist - in video is there the ability to tap on a subject and have the device just track that subject around the frame?
As long as the autofocus system isn't reliable I don't care. Yes they are building fantatstic cams with nice focus. But the colours I can change in post not if the focus is not on point. I had a Fuji X-T5 for one day (made a video about it). And it is in so many ways better than my good old A7III. But the Sony Autofocus is just terrific and something I can trust 100%!
So the X-S20 is better than the Sony A6400 and A6600, and the new A6700 is only supposed to have a 26mp sensor and front scroll dial in terms of physical improvements. Looks like the XT5 and XH2 are going to be ahead of whatever Sony releases this year (and after a massive 4 year wait from the last APSC) - I sense a change of brand coming for me personally.
the A6700 should have better AF and IBIS than the X-S20, WR and 2 card slots. And I suspect a better fps (8 for X-S20, maybe 12 or 15 for Sony) and buffer, but comparable specs in video (maybe not the 6.2K but 4K 120). But I also think it will be at a higher price, 300 to 400$ more and fuji has an edge in the lens selection (not as big as with Canon tough). If am wrong on the price, the Sony sound like a very good deal... But personally, i'll stick with my X-S10 for now and maybe "upgrade" to a used X-T3 in a year or so
Sorry but why do people say X-T5 is better than the AIV. Sony is king in autofocus, sharpness, noise reduction and color reproduction. Fuji is nowhere near based on the photos I compared on dpreview. Fuji images are too soft for me.
@@claudiuoroian3911 nobody is saying that the X-T5 is better than the A7IV but it is 800$ cheaper whilste being made for photographers fisrt... Sony is the best in AF sure, but for sharpeness there's plenty in all systems, noise reduction that's appaantly AI territory and color reproduction, Sony was behind until last generation (don't really know about this one but Fuji colors are "subjectively" gorgeous). FF has it's avantages over APSC but APSC has it's avantages too, heck even m4/3 can produce pro images. I do think that the next A6700 will be better than the X-S20, but Fuji has a lot more to offer (XT5,XH2 and 2S and even XT3 or 4) if you want to stay in the system. If you go Sony, you have to go the FF route eventually, wich is fine but not for everybody.
@@showdaKOstrue. That’s the reason why I just sold my a6500. Sony really pushes you to upgrade to FF, but lens prices, dimensions and weight is cursed if you’re not really pro. Now I’m choosing between x-t4 and x-s20, because of the same price 😅
@@showdaKOs Hi. Hmmm, your reply here is interesting. I was once tempted to replace my XT3 with a discounted brand new X-S10 because I like to have the Classic Neg sim and a more compact form factor. But you intend to upgrade from the X-S10 to a used X-T3? Why's that? And having read that you're also considering the X-T4 and also the X-S20. So which camera did you end up with? Thank you.
@Benson haha! i mean in continuous rain, as opposed to splashed. anyway hi, comrade of the grammar and proper English police, I am usually one of you ;-)
One thing I discovered when recording video is, if using 10bit 4.2.2, All-Intra, and at the maximum 360Mbps (in any mode), the camera will only allow up to 45 minutes continuos recording time (without the fan). I have a Lexar 128GB SDXC II, V90 card. This was a disappointment. However, If I choose Long GOP, then it can record up to 5 hours. The good part is, there is no overheating issue or shut-downs.
I wish Fujifilm had added some weather sealing to the X-S20 given the price and target market. It's a travel camera. Weather is unpredictable and one doesn't always have the luxury of working around the weather when travelling.
I know what you mean, but not much else is properly sealed at this price. Some claim it, but I wouldn't trust it under really tough conditions at this end of the market. TBH, I travel a lot to many different places and I have never travelled with a truly weather sealed camera, and I've never had any issues, as I just try to be a bit more careful with it.
Great review. I’m looking for mid-range APSC camera for video my sons sports. I’ve always liked Fuji but the autofocus on fast moving subjects could not keep up with Sony. Now that Sony is coming out with the A6700, that will be an interesting choice between thhat and the XxS20. The Fuji glass seems better, but the A6700 should eventually have 4K120, but probably not 6K open gate. At the end the consumer wins with Fuji continuing to focus on an excellent APSC range that helps keep lenses at a manageable size and weight. The pricing on the XS20 seems super competitive as well.
I can’t help feeling a little disappointed with this product launch. Was really hoping for some new GFX news and particularly Xpro4. Am wondering whether there was some major problem with the Xpro 4 that was uncovered before the supposed April launch, and they’ve just gone with this to avoid too much disappointment??
Rumours can often lead to disappointment! I'm sure there will be an X-Pro 4, so if you're waiting for one, just wait a bit longer. I'm sure one will arrive in the next year. No point speculating unless you have firm info,
@cameralabs I am really, really liking this camera, by all accounts. Couple of Qs: So, you can get subject detection on non-Auto modes, yes? Pity it wasnt in place automatically. Is it possible this could be offered in a firmware update, do you think Gordon? AND, does the XS20 offer focus stacking and multiple exposures?
When you record video in open gate 6k , can you turn on/see on the screen a grid guide lines helping you frame correctly for both vertical and horizontal content 16:9 and 9:16? Or you just need to guess and hope you have it right? Usually you have rule of thirds grid available on cameras but with open gate it would be useful to have 16:9 grid too.
That's a great idea, but in practice each composition could be different, as in my two examples, i took a portrait crop from the middle and from the far left side, plus in one the horizontal was higher than the other. So I think the solution is to have TWO 16:9 frames visible, resizable and repositionable. I bet nobody does this!
Thanks for the info. Would a main point of difference between the Xs20 and EM1mkiii/OM1 be the lack of weather sealing? (apart from sensor size and resolution)
Hi Gordon, thanks for your reviews, they're really helpful. I have a Canon 6D and I'm thinking of upgrading. At first, I was considering the 90D but then I saw your review with the definition comparison charts, which led me to two other options: the Canon R8 and the Fujifilm X-S20, which are similarly priced. (Except I'd have to buy new lenses unlike with the Canon 90D.) I understand that the main video difference is between 4K and 6K, and honestly, that doesn't appeal to me that much (although it's nice to have as a future option) since I make videos for social media, institutions, or tutorials, so I'm more interested in good definition and autofocus. What do you think? Thanks a lot for everything.
Recently getting the Fuji 150-600 I’m wondering how much better the AF is over the X-S10. Got some great eagle pictures recently but missed a lot. Might have to get one
It'll be faster and the subject detection will be better BUT I'd recommend renting or borrowing one first before you buy to make sure it's a big enough change for you. It might be worth making the bigger step up to the faster and more robust XH2S or XH2.
I have an old Canon 7D and want to upgrade it to a lighter and more modern mirrorless camera. I am trying to decide between the Fuji X-S20 and the Canon RP. I mainly use a camera for still photography - predominately people, landscapes and buildings. I take animal shots but but fast action sports that would need a high burst speed. In both instances I would mainly couple it with a 24-105mm lens as this meets 99% of my needs. Any help or hints very welcome!!
The RP might be a bit slow for you and lack the better AF of the newer Canons. Since you have an APSC camera and the XS20 is also APSC, then maybe you should be considering an APSC Canon alternative as well, like an R10 or R7. The R7 would be closest to your 7D experience.
Is there much benefit in image quality and sharpness/detail switching from JPEG to HEIF? Or just lower file size? Always been curious about that for Fuji cameras as they are my favourite SOOC system.
It depends how the company implements HEIF. They have the potential to be smaller than JPEG with the same quality, or better quality at the same size, plus there's a 10 bit potential too. not 100% sure how Fujifilm balances it but I'll try to find out for a future video.
Thanks Gordon. This camera really ticks many boxes for me. I would like to upgrade my aged canon M50. I have just warries about AF for taking head videos and I noticed in most reviews the video is very magenta. I am not sure if switching from canon I would be happy? I wish canon give me camera with those specs for that price!
Thank you for the video! How would you rate the picture quality in the x-s20 vs the XT-5? Also, since this camera does not have the traditional dial to go through your most recent images taken, what dial is used? Lastly, isn’t this camera really made to compete with the new Sony a6700 and not the a6600?
The 6700 was still secret when I made the video, so I couldn't mention it. Xt5 has 40mp sensor vs 26 here. Check out my xh2, xh2s and xt5 reviews for sensor comparisons
Hi Gordon, thank you for excellent review! As you have reviewed the Canon R7 few months ago, would you mind making a comparison between the two? I am deciding on which one to get for hybrid video/photo mostly for travels and hiking. From reviews to me it seems R7 has a (small?) advantage on autofocus and IBIS plus has weather sealing (very good for hike) and two cards slots but very few Rf-s apsc lenses; X-S20 has better/more video codecs and many more/better lenses and a bit more compact. What would be your impression on this?
I think you've pretty much nailed it actually. I'd also base a lot of it on the lenses you're planning to use and the actual physical style of each camera and their default image quality.
Thank you Gordon. Definitely not a clear winner! Which would you pick for yourself for hybrid adventures hikes and travels? Did you feel big difference in autofocus and IBIS or quite a little one?
If the af is good it maybe the best budget option for vloggers for fujifilm. The xh2 just costs a lot more and is a bit bigger, and the xt5 has no flip screen sadly.
i have a bucket list trip to SE Asia planned this year. i want to upgrade my kit to something with a modern focusing system. (My current cameras are XT3, 80D and RP) I'm trying to decide between this and the R7. I will be in big cities and more undeveloped regions. I need this camera to day everything - landscape and portrait pics and video. Which camera would you pick? I have good XF and EF-S glass so that’s not a factor.
Both are great choices. I'd go with whichever inspires you the most and which lens system you prefer. Both are up to the job. Do you prefer the images from your XT3 or Canons?
@@cameralabs Wow, thanks for the reply! I love the velvia film simulation on the XT-3 for both stills and video, although I find that Canon’s JPEGs are more amenable to editing than Fuji’s (forgive me Fro’ but I don’t shoot raw). Also, I noticed that the XT-3’s JPEGs fall apart fairly quickly once the ISO starts going up. Do you think the new processor will improve that? On a different note, the weather sealing of the R7 is appealing to me. I live in Hawaii, so I’m around salty air and the shoreline a lot of the time when I take pics.
All honest reviewers mentioned that xs-20 af and IBIS is improved upon xs10 but still behind Sony and Canon. The question is, how far is it behind? What about compared to their own flagship? same as XH2? Is IBIS 7stops worse than even Nikon Z5?
It's not better or worse, it's different and you have to find the system that works well for the stuff you're using it for. The Fujifilm IBIS can be brilliant for mostly static handheld compositions, but I personally find it less good when walking and vlogging, at least the way I hold and film with it.
@@cameralabs wonder if Sony Panasonic Canon Fuji systems reply on IBIS alone, digital off, how would you rank them in walking vlog usability? Many thanks Gordon
Are you talking about video? Cause for photos (and static handheld video), even last gen Fuji ibis is much better than Sony. Though I heard it's not very stable with walking/panning in videos.
@@cy9nvs the mechanical of Fuji IBIS is very strong which means it can correct large movement unlike Sony's previous gen IBIS up til A7RV however Fuji software implementation seems to be jarring.
@@cameralabs Appreciate it. Nowadays it's hard to get honest reviews as most youtubers are sponsored by the brands or just wanna sell the cameras through their affiliate links... IMO it"s a great camera but not specially for vlogging given that shaky IBIS.
the xs20 is ticking just about everything i want right now. shopping list is xs20, 18mm f.14 & ex60 flash.. also former sony user. need something small, quality & attracted to fugi's longer support for existing cameras with firmware updates.
Thanks for the review. It considering this model since the H2s price is to much to swallow and is bigger and heavier. How is the general build quality of s20? Is the top plate metal or plastic and what about the rolling shutter? Thnx
Rolling shutter is much the same as XS10 and other X-Trans IV, although I hope to do a fuller test of that. Build is ok for the price, not sure about actual materials, but not equivalent to flagship models obviously. It's a mid-range camera.
Lack of weather sealing and IBIS worse vs Oly/OM system body still not concerned me to move. Image quality from M43 with pro/prime/leica lenses is still decent enough.
Hey, I'm a bit torn between this and the XT-50. I'm new to Fuji, past canon user. I would be using it as a hybrid video / photo although I do have a Canon C300 MK II for higher end video. Would appreciate your info. Thanks!
@@cameralabs Thanks! I was leaning towards that. Now to decide to buy with the 15-45 ($100) cheap kit lens, the 18-55 ($500) or buy just the body and get the sigma 18-50 (600). Decisions, decisions...
I’m very curious about the 4K crop for 50/60p, as even their website does not list any cropping at all unless you go into HD LP modes.. unless you’re getting into UHD vs DCI ratios or something?
They do list it in the movie specs, but you really have to read the table carefully! It's near the bottom of this page, and I believe the crop for 4k 50-60p is 1.18x without digital stabilisation: fujifilm-x.com/global/products/cameras/x-s20/specifications/
You mean the rubber eyecup? They can deteriorate over time depending how it's stored or transported, but they normally slide off and can be replaced if you like. I've not tried this on Fujifilms, but assume it's possible.
Really wasn't expecting the triton fountain in Valletta at 13:25 to appear in this video, didn't know you visited Malta :0 How was your experience here?
@@cameralabs Glad to hear :D Quick question, which camera would you recommend between this Fuji X S20 and the Sony A7C? I'm mostly looking at getting a reliable and portable video camera which will be used for both vlog style and cinematic video with light colour grading.
Me again… hopefully they’ll have a firmware where subject detect is in all the modes. I’ve discovered I don’t like Velvia…. I actually shoot Kodak film sims on 2 of my custom settings on my X-S10
Thanks for another very detailed review. I need a new video camera soon and am tempted by much cheaper canon r10 + adapter + Efs 18-55 but xs20 + 15-45 might be a good start too with the option to buy a cooling fan if needed. UHS ii cards seem to be half the price they were a couple of years ago too. Too many options……..
Try and hold each camera in person. The Canon won't be as nice with an adapted lens in terms of size and looks, much better to go for native lenses when you can.
Gordon, I dont understand, when you are comparing the 4K vs the 6k, why the same with? Doesn't the 6K have more with? 4160? I mean isn't the 6k open gate vs 4K equals to 6240 x 4160 VS 4096 x 2160 ? Is more resolution only verticaly? Sorry for the question. Thanks
The 6k is open gate, so full sensor shape, which is 3:2. The actual coverage widthways is the same, but it has more pixels for more detail, allowing you to zoon in on a 4k project
As someone that is new to Fuji offerings, what are your thoughts on this vs a future xt40? I would love something to take with me everywhere and not cry if I got robbed. I don't really have need for all the video functions, I love the fuji colors and would be more interested in the photography results. Thank you Gordon. Have been following you since 2011.
Thanks for sticking around so long! A future XT40 will have the vintage styling which you may or may not prefer, and the grip is traditionally smaller, but I think the body will almost certainly be too small to have IBIS and the bigger battery. So the XT double-digit is about the style and smaller size. Of course this is speculation based on earlier models.
@@ActuallyJamesS are you suggesting there won't be a new XT double digit, or it won't be called a 40? I'd line it up with the single digit, so skip to becoming an XT50. Anyway, finger's crossed as it was always a favourite.
Would you suggest X-S20 to someone who takes photos most of the time instead of vblog or video? X30-II is a bit old in the spec, and Fujifilm wants users to use XT5 for taking photos. Do you think so?
Hey, need help to choose budget camera for only trips and street photoraphy. Options looks like olympus em d10iv, fujifilm x30ii, canon r10 or anything better u have as a option. Thanks!
You contacted me on Twitter as well, best to use one platform when contacting. You could honestly use any camera for trips and street, so go for the one with the looks / design you like and the lenses you can afford.
In 2024 what would you get. Fuji XS-20 with 15-45mm lens for 1400 or Panasonic S5 body only for 1000, looking for something hybrid that will last me couple of years.
X-S20. I believe the slightly smaller body will be easier to deal with and Fuji X bodies all have a plethora of reasonably priced lenses to choose from.
A delightful, informative, and thorough review - as always - Gordon. As a former X-S10 owner, I was overly concerned about the lack of weather-sealing. (A trip to Pulpit Rock (Australia) one evening when the wind was whipping off the Antarctic, and finding my lenses needed the spray removed after each shot convinced me that landscapes were not what the X-S10 was really designed for.) I ended up changing my system and have no regrets. I was also unsure if the IBIS on the X-S10 was as effective as the specifications indicated, because my OM-1 is streets ahead in that regard. That said, the X-S20 seems a worthwhile upgrade and fills a niche that the other cameras in the Fuji range have left vacant. Oh, and to have long battery life is worth the cost of the upgrade alone, IMO!
Does anyone have this issue when shooting video in a custom mode? Every time I move the dial to a custom mode, the shutter speed goes to the wrong setting (not the SS i have set). For example, I have C1 set to 4K60p with the shutter speed set to 120. Every time i move to another setting and back to C1, the SS moves to 60 and doesn't let me change it unless I go into the Q menu. The custom mode is set to video and manual. Please help, thanks!
Does have the dual gain iso feature when using flog2 at iso 3200 like it's bigger brother xh2s?! If so it should make a really capable low light beast on a budget
@@cameralabs It would be an interesting feature if it was procesor related and not sensor wise What baffles me that they never advertise it I found out by chance that the xt3 and xt4 had dual gain iso using iso 2000 in flog only The feature is also mighty useful
Help please i think of bùying fuji xt5. What lens would give 50mm +/_ . Have broken Canon 70d twice within a year. My choice is either Panasonic ir Fuji g95
The APSC sensor Fujifilm uses has a 1.5x field reduction. So if you want the same view as 50mm on FULL FRAME, you should choose something around 35mm from Fujifilm. Note your 70D also has an APSC sensor, so you'll have a similar view with similar lenses. If you like an actual 50 on your 70D, buy an actual 50 for your Fujifilm.

This will be the 1st Fuji I buy since the XT3. I was tempted by the XH2 but I'm mainly interested in stills. The only reason why I didn't care for the XS10 was the battery life.

Remember with any stabilisation, your mileage will vary from mine. I can only show my own experiences though!
How is "Auto subject detection" not a thing in their other, MORE expensive models? 🤯
I kind of doubt we'll ever get it, but this feature should also come to the other cameras.
You're very welcome!
I already pre-ordered one. Many thanks for the review
Thanks for the review. I'm hoping the success of the X-S20 inspires Nikon to launch something similar in the next year or so.
Bonus points for smoldering Chris cameo. I agree. I would like to see the auto subject detection on my X-T5 and H2S.
I've been sitting on that cameo for a few years, but this was the first chance to use it!
@@cameralabs That’s why he looked so young. Lol.
I've been massively impressed with my X-S10. It does lack the character of previous Fuji cameras I've owned, but more than makes up for it in features. Thanks very much for the great review Gordon.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I wasn't aware of the auto subject detect only working when in full auto mode. That is silly. I agree with you. We need auto subject detect when in aperture priority mode, manual mode, etc.
I really hope they can do this.
Great review Gordon, I’m very tempted to get this as a companion to my xh2s. Would be interesting to see how the colours stack up side by side
Yes, I'd like to do some comparisons between all three sensors with the same image processor. I'd expect them to be very similar in style, but you never know!
Great review of the XS20. Fuji is competitive again but the price could be a bit lower
Wow, when you showed the first picture instantly Malta came into my mind. :) Happy that I got it right. Malta is one of my fav places.
Well-spotted!
I just came back from Malta. Cool to see all these sample shots, and recognizing where they were taken.
It's a nice place!
The battery upgrade IMO remedies the X-S10's biggest single flaw.
As a X-T5 owner, I really want the auto subject detection.
Hi Gordon, great to finally see your review on this new camera. One question I have, in full auto mode on detecting lat us say a dog, will the camera also select an appropriate shutter speed? Like increase the ISO to be ble to use 1/1000 sek?
Thanks for the in depth review.
No Auto subject detection outside of full Auto mode? That really is such an annoying omission. I wonder why they would do that? Seems crazy.
I think they did it because the normal menus were already written and they didn't have time or budget to change them plus they assumed people didn't mind. i hope they can change this
Great review Gordon, appreciate the effort and depth went into this despite only having it a few days. ☕
Thanks, I stayed up late and got up early to pack as much in as possible!
Whoa my hair was black and my voice was deep back then!
So was mine! Thanks for the cameo Chris, I'm going to try and find a way to incorporate it into as many videos as possible going forward!
Excellent. I also watched your review of the Canon R50. Which do you prefer between these two for mostly video use with some photography? Thanks!
Thank you.
This is an incredible camera! Great job Fuji!
How is the rolling shutter compared to X-H2s?
At this level, the lack of weather sealing is really unfortunate- for me a no-go; my cameras get wet continuously.
@Benson haha! i mean in continuous rain, as opposed to splashed. anyway hi, comrade of the grammar and proper English police, I am usually one of you ;-)
How can Fujifilm XS20 compare with Sony a6700 in terms of video autofocus while using 3rd party lens like sigma 18 - 50 f2.8.
Thanks, good info
No point speculating unless you have firm info,
Absolutely, waiting to seeing what they come out with. Have been looking forward to the new xpro for a really long time!
Yes, you can have subject detection in non-Auto but YOU have to select the subject type, for example, human, animal, car.
It's one of the differences, yes
Hi Gordon, thanks for your reviews, they're really helpful. I have a Canon 6D and I'm thinking of upgrading. At first, I was considering the 90D but then I saw your review with the definition comparison charts, which led me to two other options: the Canon R8 and the Fujifilm X-S20, which are similarly priced. (Except I'd have to buy new lenses unlike with the Canon 90D.)
I understand that the main video difference is between 4K and 6K, and honestly, that doesn't appeal to me that much (although it's nice to have as a future option) since I make videos for social media, institutions, or tutorials, so I'm more interested in good definition and autofocus. What do you think? Thanks a lot for everything.
I've replied to your other message - best to stick to one, or they can get lost!
Best reviews hands down. Thank you Gordon.
Thanks!
Was that Chris when he was sick lol
I've been sitting on these for a long time, back around covid times, but this was my first chance to use them...
@@cameralabs I can still hear him saying "livin' la bokeh loca."
Is there much benefit in image quality and sharpness/detail switching from JPEG to HEIF? Or just lower file size? Always been curious about that for Fuji cameras as they are my favourite SOOC system.
I'm not sure if that's actually supported here, but HEIF supports HDR images, which JPEG does not.
It depends how the company implements HEIF. They have the potential to be smaller than JPEG with the same quality, or better quality at the same size, plus there's a 10 bit potential too. not 100% sure how Fujifilm balances it but I'll try to find out for a future video.
I guess I’m deciding between this and the xh2. I have a xt2 and xh1 and want to do more video and vlogs so it’s definitely time to upgrade
Great review!
Can you film video in vertical format in Vlog mode on this Fuji?
Getting rid of the d-pad was a very bad idea. 4 less important keys. no fujifilm that's the wrong way. it could be such a great second camera.
Thanks Gordon. Just bought an XS20 so very timely.
Happy to help!
I've not seen a magenta cast myself, but you can adjust the colour easily if preferred. I've found AF is fine for static talking heads.
Thanks Gordon for the great review...hope you enjoyed Malta ;)
Thanks, and yes I enjoyed Malta very much!
Fujifilm X-S20 AUTO Subject Detection should be in other mode as well. Shutter speed is a bit low for birding in Auto mode
Good point on shutter speed
Very Nice!
Can you record 12bit raw on Fuji XS-20 camera and show it on external recorder?
I don't think so, but check the Fujifilm specs page

Hey, I'm a bit torn between this and the XT-50. I'm new to Fuji, past canon user. I would be using it as a hybrid video / photo although I do have a Canon C300 MK II for higher end video. Would appreciate your info. Thanks!

Hello! Did your EVF, in the part where you look at it, wear out easily? My little one is getting a lot of wear and tear.
You mean the rubber eyecup? They can deteriorate over time depending how it's stored or transported, but they normally slide off and can be replaced if you like. I've not tried this on Fujifilms, but assume it's possible.

Quick question, which camera would you recommend between this Fuji X S20 and the Sony A7C?
Do you know if the 4K 60fps is oversampled even if it has a crop? Crop is 10% right?
I'm not sure, it's been a while since I tested this.
Is this a good replacement for my xt2 for family sports photography and general life stuff?
What's wrong with your XT2?
I am struggling with the 30% price increase. Was it under-priced before, or over-priced now? Or is it really 30% better?
Not sure, but everything is more expensive now.
@@cameralabs Thank you. This is what I needed to know.
@@ActuallyJamesS are you suggesting there won't be a new XT double digit, or it won't be called a 40? I'd line it up with the single digit, so skip to becoming an XT50. Anyway, finger's crossed as it was always a favourite.
what about the canon r8? and what do you think about the 28mm rf pancake?
Haven't I made videos about the R8 and RF28?
Would you suggest X-S20 to someone who takes photos most of the time instead of vblog or video? X30-II is a bit old in the spec, and Fujifilm wants users to use XT5 for taking photos. Do you think so?
I think it's a great choice!
Hey, need help to choose budget camera for only trips and street photoraphy. Options looks like olympus em d10iv, fujifilm x30ii, canon r10 or anything better u have as a option. Thanks!

@@cameralabs hey, thanks for the help.
Is 'Product Priority' unique to this model, or do other models support it, either now or via firmware? Thanks.
It's the first from Fujifilm, BUT you can simulate something similar by just turning off face and eye detection.
Will background defocus work when using in video mode and not in vlog mode? thanks
Is it one of the modes that only appears in vlog mode? If so, just choose a small f number.
Yeah, you have to think carefully about where and how you shoot with cameras to figure out how effective the IBIS and weather sealing need to be.
Would you say Fujifilm color science in videos ( not raw photos) is on the same level as Canon and Sony, better or worse?
It's different, I like it.
Does have the dual gain iso feature when using flog2 at iso 3200 like it's bigger brother xh2s?!
If so it should make a really capable low light beast on a budget
Not sure, as it uses the older 26mp xtrans iv sensor with the latest v processor, so a different combo.
@@cameralabs
It would be an interesting feature if it was procesor related and not sensor wise
What baffles me that they never advertise it
I found out by chance that the xt3 and xt4 had dual gain iso using iso 2000 in flog only
The feature is also mighty useful
@@MrZerosami2 I agree, it's interesting most companies don't mention it.
Thank you very much for the review!
You're welcome!
We need a comparison video between Canon R7 and XS20
Would you pick the fuji xs20 over a sony a7c?
I would, but then I don't like the A7c. Depends which style and system appeal more to you personally.
So tempting, but I need to be patient and see what the A6700 offers before dumping my A6600.
What did you decide? - I'm torn between the X-S20 and the A6700!
@@DigiDriftZone I went with the A6700. Mostly because I have a whole snoot full of Sony glass. APSC as well as FF, and I prefer the Sony options
@@j16m02 after a lot of research, I ended up going full frame Sony as it was cheaper/lighter than Fuji, I recorded a video about it here: th-cam.com/video/aJYSz4mK95Y/w-d-xo.html
I'm a little confused. What does the 24P? And 30P stand for not fame rate. I prefer 24 frames for motion .Is that possible with this camera
24p and 30p mean 24fps and 30fps, although some cameras actually record 23.98 or 29.97fps to match some video standards
Do you think 200P is the same quality as the XH2S?
I show res charts in my XH2S movie mode review at different speeds, so you could try to compare them. I haven't yet
Your eyes see beauty. Good photos.
Thankyou!
For hybrid - this or xt5 for image quality?
XT5 as it has the newer and higher res 40mp sensor
What’s the USB streaming resolution and frame rate? Doesn’t say in the manual or spec.
Didn't I mention in the review? I think it'll do 4k 30
@@cameralabs it can do 4k60. Only mentioned in the press release, not anywhere else. It’s also the first camera with USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10Gbps.
