    This is a remarkably even-handed review considering what you are going through with the camera. But then again, that is why I trust your reviews.

      Seething inside, believe me. But, my frustrating experience with the camera shouldn't be the core of the review. That wouldn't be fair to the camera itself and likely wouldn't benefit anyone except those who like to ride the downward spiral.

    Well, I had to return two defective brand new X-T5s before getting a "good"one, so I wouldn't call the X-T5 bomb proof either. I also just returned a defective new XF 16-50 kit lens. Fuji appears to be struggling with quality control in an attempt to make production match demand.

      I also returned a defective X-T5. I wasn't referring to the QC there so much as the overall quality of materials, buttons, and the weather resistance.

    Ive been a Fuji user since 2012 and I have noticed their products slowly fading in build, operation and production quality since the X-Trans III models, the last of the great Fujis in my personal and experience and observations. Coincidentally that was the last of the Made In Japan models, kinda weird right.

      I experienced the same! I sold my xt-5 because it felt a bit cheap compared to earlier models I owned as well as the autofocus problems. Bought the Nikon ZF and really appreciate that camera. Next to that I also have my Fuji x-pro 2 still that I use for personal work, which will probably always be the favorite camera I ever owned!

    I was thinking about "upgrading" my original X-T30 but, and this is far from the first story I've heard about this camera's reliability, have decided to keep the X-T30 which is utterly reliable and is one of the most enjoyable cameras I've ever used - definitely a lot more fun than my GFX100Sii. Wonderfully honest review and many thanks.

    Hi Dylan, sorry to hear you got a lemon xt50. I have had mine for a couple months also and it has been a positive pleasant experience. I’ve had a couple cameras where the card is in the battery compartment with tight spaces , hard to get out trying to grab it with your fingers.Dont know if this helps but I found there is a lip on the card and I use my fingernail to pull it out enough where it is easier to grab. Hope mine continues to be good as I do like the form factor of this camera. I also put a small rig grip which makes it easier to hold well ,my only real gripe is I find the on off dial a bit small. Good luck to your ongoing experience with this Fuji👍😀

      Glad to hear you haven't gone through the trials and tribulations I have. Thanks for this honest and enlightening report. My X-T4 is my first Fujifilm camera. I greatly enjoy the Fuji experience with the dials and have had a great time using it. But, six months out of warranty the LCD screen developed a major issue. So disappointing. I did not upgrade to the X-T5. My plan was to wait for the X-T6 (2025 maybe?), but now I am rethinking Fujifilm altogether and considering another brand. Fujifilm's delivery issues have also been an abomination. I have been trying to get an X100VI for a carry around and that looks to be an impossible dream. Fuji is seriously letting its customer base down. Sad now with these QA issues.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We'll see what the future holds, for sure. Delivery is a real issue for Fujifilm now. In Korea, they're still not done delivering their pre-orders... I chatted to my local store and he said that at this rate, they won't be able to actually get one on the shelf for sale until next year. It certainly speaks to the power that showing your camera on TikTok can have, but it's disappointing from the perspective of those who actually want a camera to make photographs with.

    I bought an XT5 when they first came out but returned it after about two weeks.
    In the time I had it I didn’t get a single sharp image out of it, with a variety of lenses. Fujifilm diagnosed it as a faulty IBIS system, which appeared to be making the sensor twist as a photograph was taken.
    I went back to using my Xpro2, which I adore, and was quite happy.
    I then bought an XF 33mm, and am having trouble with it missing focus intermittently.
    Fujifilm build quality isn’t what it was I fear.

      I get sharper images with my X-T30 than with the X-T5. I've found the camera disappointing. You're right though: I should see if it's a fault with the IBIS system or something.

  • @SummersSnaps
    @SummersSnaps หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    First off, I can understand your motivation to pick one up. I used to run with an XH2S and XT30II, I loved how different the two cameras were and there existed plenty of opportunities where I didn't need the flagship weight, size and features and appreciated instead something much smaller and compact yet still giving me the same Fuji colours and IQ. XT30II+Zeiss Touit32 was a match made in heaven 🥰
    Secondly, I think perhaps you have been unlucky or there is a bad batch/box that you keep getting fed from. I have not heard of so many of the issues you've had, but all your points are valid. When I consider I picked up my XT30II new for a little over $1000AUD, this XT50 is over $2000AUD!, this is not a small mark up, its TWICE the price! And at this price point, for a single card slot play thing... its really a big no deal from me. Everything you mention is almost palatable at $1000AUD, but $2k?! Hell no! I spent $2000AUD on the XS20 as a bridge till I could afford a second XH2S and that being equally as expensive and single slot never sat well with me.. I couldn't wait to shift it and replace with a second XH2S (mind you the XS20 was a great camera, no issues with it whatsoever).
    I'm a firm believer in bad batches. Matthew Rudderman fell out of love with his XH2S for similar QC issues to yourself, however I sit here with 2x XH2S's that never missed a beat..
    And about your warranty, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth, especially because you shoot professionally with Fujifilm. I can only think either they don't know who you are (and they really ought to, you're ambassador level of output and voice!) or they do and are cautious about the message they send to the broader community that they too can get refunds so easily?
    I appreciate your feedback, its surprising how the silly things like no lock on the dial or annoying card ejection practices can affect the user experience. There's too much rushing with new bodies these days, take a little more time in R&D Fuji.. it'll be worth it in the long term.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks for taking the time, as always, to chime in with your detailed thoughts.
      I'm right there with you on the "bad batch" etc. All it takes is a tired worker to miss a few faults and that can happen to any company that has to pump things out as quickly as people desire in the modern world.
      But, the customer service was ridiculous. Blaming me and refusing to even push it up the chain left a sour taste, indeed. I'm currently working with a GFX 100S, a pair of X-H2S bodies, and an X-T5, not to mention all the bodies that went before them and the lenses that mount to them. Regardless of my little reach into the world of potential customers, Fujifilm should really be trying to keep me as a happy and loyal customer, as they should to everyone who comes through the door.
      This experience has tarnished my view of their overall offerings, to be sure. What will go wrong next? How much will it cost me? It's hard to shake those feelings.

    • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Yeh it really is hard to separate and compartmentalize the brand (as a whole) from the local district response. I've only positive things to say about the brand representatives and offices here in Sydney, but I know that this is not always the case in other countries and regions. I think you would have been very well looked after over here. Also staff come and go, next time your experiences might be very different. Try not to let Fujifilm leave a bad taste in your mouth, the company would actually be probably quite shocked at your treatment and heads would roll if they properly knew...

    I've been a long term fuji user, and a Fuji X shooter since 2016.
    I started with the X-T10 which was £499 body only (XT-50 is £1250 body only)
    The X-T10 was my primary go to camera for almost 4 years (I shot with X-Pro 1 and 2, X-E2s during that time)
    The rubber on the X-T10 needed gluing back down after heavy use, but it was still working till the day I sold it (Earlier this year) .
    Since then I've owned X-T3s, X-T5s and an X100VI
    I have no build quality issues with any. But your issues with not 1 but 2 X-T50s make me wonder about future build quality... If the X-T50 was still sub £1000 , you can expect some compromises, and it is a camera I'd have considered as a 2nd body when shooting with the X-T5 but at the current price, I'd be more inclined to get a 2nd X-T5 if it was absolutely necessary that I had 2 interchangeable lens cameras with the same sensor(however it is easy enough to edit the X-Trans 4 and 5 files to get a similar result)

    Great video, thank you. I bought an XT-50 about a month ago but don’t use it that often so I’m still in the process of setting it up. It’s my first Fuji so I’m still coming to terms with the system. Personally, I hate custom buttons and dials so I’ve switched them all off aside from one that I use occasionally to toggle from EVF to rear screen. I’ve moved the Q menu to the button next to the shutter release so that I don’t keep activating the menu accidentally.
    I don’t want to mess this up by experimenting but I’ve heard that the FS buttons on the dial can be used as different user profiles, not just to add different film sims to the dial. Is this right? As I will be using the camera on a tripod a fair amount, I’d like to be able quickly to switch to a tripod profile (eg no IBIS, RAW only, rear screen on, horizontal/vertical assist etc). Can I programme one of the FS dial positions to do that?

    Sorry you had a bad experience. I switched from the S-X20 to the X-T50. My dials are all firm and only get knocked out of position when it gets snagged in my bag. I also never had the heat issues. Shot in Istanbul in the middle of summer and it never felt hot to the touch. I absolutely love mine, but I am not using it for vlogging or professionally. I am at about 10k photos and it has worked perfectly.
    One misconception people have is this is an entry level camera. It is not. That is the X-T30ii. In my opinion, this is for the top of the fuji hobby market, where I am.

      I am a photo centric amateur user so the x-t5 was overkill. I really didn't like the flip out screen on the X-S20 and wanted a shutter dial, plus I don't vlog. I bought the 50 and ran them both for 3 weeks thinking I would just return the 50 within the 30 day return period if I didn't like it. I ended up loving the 40mp sensor. I liked the extra crop and digital zoom when shooting photos, which was unexpected, plus it has a native shutter dial. The screen, digital zoom, and 40mp sensor are the three reasons I kept it. Also, MPB gave me a killer trade in price so I didn't feel like I was taking a hit on the trade in.

    I have the XT3,XT5, XT50 and XH2. the my work Horse is the XH2, it is the largest body that is able to use even the biggest of lenses. the XT5 is a good camera but the body and the 100-400mm lens is not a good match. it's better with smaller lens. the XT3 and 50 have the same battery, the xt50 does not have a separate battery charger so I use the one from the XT3. I have only used the XT50 on two outings one with the 16mm F 1.4 the other with the 16-80 F-4 with good results and no issues. The SD card set up is the same as the Nikon ZF & ZFc. it is easier to remove the card with out the battery but if you push the card down it will help push the card up enough that id does not come flying out of the camera. I have the SmallRig grip and the grip does help and the lower plate is designed to mount on a tripod. the problem is because the camera body is smaller than the XT5 so the space between the lens on larger glass is tight. I purchased the half case and the leather case does make the grip of the camera better, the bottom of the case has a metal plate that increases the overall height of the camera slightly. I have a Peake Design ( Leash ) camera strap ann it works well. If you want to use the Fujifilm cable shutter release you will need a 2.5- 3.5mm adapter as the shutter release port is 3.5mm.

    I’ve been a Fujifilm shooter since the X-T1 came out. Not exclusively, but consistently. I’ve owned the X-T1, X-H1, X-S10, X-E3, X-E4, X100S, and X100F. I was in on the pre-order list at my local camera store for the X100VI and missed out on the first shipment by two cameras. Unfortunately, I’d already sold my X100F to help fund the VI. When it became clear that I was in for a very long wait, decided to get an X-T5. I loved the size, weight, tilting screen, and the prospect of some of the newer film sims. Sad to say, the camera had issues. I could not get even single point AF to work even with plenty of light; the camera would indicate it had acquired focus, but the images were not sharp. Not at any shutter speed, any aperture, and distance, with any lens. Worse still, the image quality was awful; no punch, no contrast, no clarity or sharpness. The images looked washed out and reminiscent of very old film stock in some cases (and not in a good way). After a few days, I returned it to the store and ended up with a second Nikon body instead. I’m still on the list for the X100VI but I don’t know if I’ll buy it or not, should it ever arrive….

    Extremely frustrating how Fuji snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with this camera. All they had to do was stick all the modern bells and whistles into an xt20 and they made a mess of it. The film sim dial is an abomination. Poor idea that was also poorly executed. They need to remove the focus-wart and put the d-pad back. The price point would've been just about bearable without these substantial missteps but with the xt5 only $300 more its a no brainer which is so annoying for those of us who love this small form factor. The XT** line is supposed to be 85% or the XT* line at half the cost. Now it's 60% of the features at 90% of the cost and a larger body too. Feel like Fuji have started to lose their way over the last 18mths and that is from a pretty fanatic fuji fanboy...

      Calling the Film Simulation dial an "abomination" is just so ridiculous. It's been a greaet workflow enhancer in my photography. Of course it would have been better to let us assign custom recipes to it, but other than that it's been nice to quickly try different looks for the same shot. THe form-factor of the x-t50 make it a no-brainer it's basically a smaller x-t5 for a few hundred bucks cheaper. I got the pancacke lens for that saved $300 and now I basically have an x100VI/X-T5

      @@compteprivefr there aren't many wrongs or rights in photography but this is one of them and you're wrong. If quickly trying different looks is your thing just bracket your favorite sims which is a thousand times quicker and better than flicking the dumdum dial in between shots. The bracket setting is conveniently located on the drive dia....oh wait, they took it away for the abomination.
      No argument from me regarding the form factor. It's one of the things I loved about that line of cameras. but it's not supposed to be a few hundred bucks cheaper than the xt5, historically it was always half the price.
      i would say that the dial is doing exactly what is was designed to do. Entice and fascinate new shooters who have already been duped by the x100 hype and can't be bothered to figure out a camera for grown-ups...

    FWIW I had the same experience with the xh2. First body died the afternoon I bought it, second one had two repairs before I eventually gave up and swapped it for the older (more reliable) xt30ii 😂 After 8 years of using Fuji gear exclusively I sold all my other Fuji lenses (about 6 at the time) except for the small 35 f2 and bought a collection of sigma i series primes and a Sony a7cr. I use the Sony 90% of the time and especially when I need reliability (auto focus and build) or to shoot in low light, I use the xt30ii when I want to shoot static subjects in daylight in JPEG. I feel like Fuji puts all their quality into the GFX line now and the x series range has become a cheaper range for casual shooting. It’s a shame as early x series cameras felt much better built and were much more reliable.

    Wow. I've taken the X-T50 on a month long trip to Europe, from the wet dreary climate in Norway to the heat of southern france, and it held up just fine. and I've been using it for the past month in NYC on street walks. It's odd that you've had to deal with 2 defective units.
    The film simulation dial has been interesting, but the main factor that trumps all is the form factor. Interchangeable-lens 40mp sensor that can fit in my pocket (paired with the 27mm pancacke lens) and just dangle on a writ-strap trumps all other factors. I'm basically getting a more convenient. Sorry to hear that. Seems like your heat problem is related with the battery running low. Anyway, my XS-10 has been great with 2 years of moderate usage, but in this last trip, the top left dial is showing bad electrical contacts problems, switching by itself. I've put the camera down and the problem seemed to go away, but now and then I see it again. That dial is customizable and I could just disable it and that wouldn't affect my photography much, but, if that happens to any other dial on the camera I would be in trouble. I'm not very impressed by Fuji build quality anymore

Quality control for a pricey camera should be much better and your take on the buttons and dials certainly would have upset me as well! Fujifilm has been a frustrating experience for me. As a normally Nikon shooter, I was attracted to their tactile dials and weight, so I picked up an Fujifilm X-T3 used with a few lenses as my street shooter. I was seriously considering an XT5 or the XT50 for the higher megapixel count. But in the end got the Nikon Zf. I will likely sell my Fujifilm gear as it was the focusing issues that I have had especially with the Fujifilm XF56mmF1.2 R. I never know if I have nailed the focus, so I now have to take numerous shots of the same scene. Needless to say, this is the end of my love affair with Fujifilm. Hi Dylan. Sorry to hear about the many issues with the XT-50. I believe FUJI Should have honoured your request for a full refund. Any new camera, regardless of price point, should work properly, right out of the box, period. I know you shoot with Fuji medium format camera & lens & have been using their cameras & lenses for many years, as a professional photographer. The XH2S has been plagued with autofocus issues & faulty firmware updates. Fuji is heavily invested in medical equipment & this is a major source of profit for their company, as opposed to their small camera division. It remains to be seen if their CEO will allocate financial resources to “fix” numerous quality control issues within their camera division. I have invested very heavily in the Fuji lens system, but have refused to upgrade my XT-3 cameras due to these on-going issues with Fuji products. I have recently retired from working full time as a photographer, so my needs are not as “pressing” as someone such as yourself, that still work as a full time photographer. I hope the quality issue will be fixed otherwise it would be a deal breaker and hurt resell value. Aside from the quality issue, in my experience with the X-T30ii, your problems wouldn’t be mine as my hands are smaller. But I do agree with you about the front and rear dials not as refined as the X-T4 and X100V I owned prior (I didn’t like the X-T4 articulating screen and the X-T5 wasn’t released when I downgraded) However I have since learned to live with it. Additionally, I feel the shutter is also not as refined as the X-T4, and only goes up to 1/4000 rather than 1/8000.
    I’m not a fan of the film sim dials because I shoot Jpeg + RAW and rarely change, but I guess it’s gonna be something I can experiment with in the future. If the QA issue is figured out over the coming months, I might just get one myself. Hope your camera will be ok and looking forward to your future videos!

    I am a massive fan of my Fujifilm cameras, yet, I deplore the decreasing build quality in many of their most recent cameras. I am now the proud owner of an X-T5, yet compared to an X-T2, the build quality seems worse… Your experience with built quality also suggests that these cameras are not made to last anymore which is a bummer. For the price of the X-T50, I would have loved to see weather sealing and the three way tilt screen. I really enjoy my X-T30 but the fact that I cannot tilt it vertically is very frustrating as I cannot see what I do when shooting at low angles. That‘s where I would actually prefer the X-S20 screen implementation. Additionally, the use of the older shutter mechanism bugs me. It‘s loud, vibrates a lot and switches to ES at 1/4000s already. But maybe I am also just spoiled by my X-T5 that I love for anything it does apart from the minor built trade offs.

If there is more faces in the frame or the subject is briefly covered, the AF gets lost. For my personal work, I disable eye detection and use a single point to focus my Fuji cameras. Tbf rejecting the refund because of the water issue is understandable from a policy standpoint but a mad decision. Unless the first unit was completely waterlogged and clearly a sign of end user abuse, that the customer has had multiple issues since should warrant the refund.
    IMO Fujifilm seems to have been on a MVP approach to this gen. And this decision seems to have spread to manufacturing and QC standards when considering the hardware issues mentioned. The lacking AF system has also been found out.
    IMO they need to get off this trajectory if they don’t wish to create a downward spiral. A retro design appeal can only get them so far. In time, consumers will also eventually get over the film simulations and the X100 hype. If Fujifilm is willing to let go of the fundamentals, there may not be anything left to shore them up when they fall out of fashion favour

    Oopsies. Getting the SD card out looks to be exactly the same experience as with the X-M1. But that's from 8-9 years ago and is an even smaller camera. I'm quite good at catching the flying SD card now ... but I digress. Given the price, and that an X-T5 is pretty small really, is there a point to the XT-50 being so close to its big brother in the features list? 20-something megapixels is plenty for most users.. Looks like a few poor decisions made by Fujifilm in developing this camera.

    Some thoughts on my experience with the X-T50 as someone who has used and sells it: the Film Simulation dial is a HUGE hit with the audience this camera is aimed at. It's easy, the interface is interesting and helpful. At the camera store where I work, we have had ZERO X-T50's returned due to quality issues. I agree with your comment on the front dial feeling mushy - has been that way for a long time over several generations of cameras. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with this camera from a reliability standpoint. That's no fun, and is cause for worry about quality control issues at Fujifilm. Cheers!

They were irrelevant in the analog and early digital era, they entered the scene 2010s with the xseries and the quality of they are struggling with consistency and quality control big time. They do seem, however, to have amassed legions of fanboys who hype their struff.

    It is interesting because I have three FujiFilm cameras and the two that were made in Japan which are my GFX cameras. I've had no issues with but my XT5 and previous S-10 I've had a few issues with they still work fine but definitely cameras that were made in Japan are much better build quality, in my opinion and that sounds unfair to Fujifilm but that's the real reality. I would also never buy a camera that's not Weather sealed. I'm in fact I don't know why they make cameras that are not properly where sealed it is one simple groove and one rubber gasket that makes it with sealed. It is not expensive to make cameras weather sealed they don't need to be waterproof but seriously designing cameras especially used in Japan Korea and China where a lot of their market is those three places .... Humidity getting into a camera is worse than dust!!

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've had plenty of issues with their cameras, both X and GFX, over the years no matter where they've been made, to be honest. In fact, I haven't had a single camera that hasn't been back to the shop during its warranty period. However, typically, it's been a sinlge issue and not a series of issues. This is really unfortunate as Fujifilm has finally found a wider customer base that might actually be what they need to expand the camera business and stop propping it up with Instax sales. Interestingly, the target market for their lower end bodies has a significant base in South East Asia, where weather sealing is an absolute must.

I don't think anything is made to the same standards of quality control as it was 15 years ago I don't know why that is. Maybe it's the process of trying to make things lighter and cheaper all the time and when you do that you run into issues touchwood I've been shooting with Fujifilm now for about two years and I haven't had any issues with any of my three Fuji cameras except for my XT5 jamming up every now and then but it's only been spasmodic. Like I said it's one simple rubber gasket inside the aluminium body of a camera to make it sealed. I get out and shoot amazing seascapes and landscape so sealing in a camera is paramount.

I had been told by 3 professional photogs that I should get a 2nd even a 3rd body because one was always going to be at Fuji for repairs. The first clues that I ignored were 1) I could only get 170-200 shots per battery. 2) The EVF would flicker very fast. 3) The camera body would get warm suddenly. 9 months later, the camera got very hot, the EVF quit working, none of the buttons, dials, or switches worked, and the LCD screen was very dim. I tried to take the battery out but it was hot and swollen and I had to pry it out. (I had 6 batteries, now 5) Since it was under warranty, I got it fixed for free, minus the shipping and battery. New EVF, new main board. A year later, same thing, but 700 dollar repair bill and I have 4 batteries left. Last summer, same thing again. Have to disagree here. This is basically an X-T5 for people who want a smaller form factor. Is it a couple hundred more than ideal? Maybe, but I want a smaller X-T5, and I’m not as price sensitive as some. So for me, it’s great.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer

      That, I would say is a big oversimplification and assumes that features such as weather sealing, dual card slots, much better durability, speed of operation, longer battery life, and much better screens aren't a factor. The X-T5 is very much a tool that is designed for quick, efficient image making. The X-T50 is quite a toy in comparison. If smaller and lighter are you only concerns, then, sure, the decision is that simple. However, there is so much more that makes the X-T5 a far better choice for a lot of people.
