The first trick Sony played on a7s iii buyers was to release the FX3 shortly after when no one suspected that move. Now the questionable hoax is to release firmware updates to the FX3 and even the FX30 and stomp a7s iii owners in the face.

LOVE your intro - super creative and your reasoning is perfectly logical. It kind of makes sense to push towards the FX3 and a more 'cinema-line' body since the a7s3 is SILLY good and realistically speaking - aimed at professionals. We love our A7s3 but as we have progressed, we would have prefrered an FX3. Great video!

@@TravisVarga That's a really interesting one - we've actually never used the EVF! We bought it as a Video only camera in the first place and have just never found the need for the EVF. But obviously having said that - it's an incredible camera for sure.
I kinda feel the Panasonic s5II brought something to the table, I never knew I would miss this much on my a7siii. The menu stuff. Open gate, internal histograms, shutter angle etc. Even the FX6 doesn't have that AFAIK. Never understood why Sony dumbed that "cinema" line camera down regarding those cinema features.

I think you're right. I own an fx3 and an a7siii, and the lack of firmware updates for the a7siii tells us everything we need to know. It's a shame because there are times where a viewfinder is still really helpful.

Viewfinder is so crucial . I've made so many important focus pulls and subtle framing decisions that would have been impossible for me personally without it.

Yes a viewfinder is all I use since I have to wear glasses for the back monitor and this sucks guessing.....no view finder I will head back to Nikon!
4:04 Not necessarily it would mean more heat. Coming from a more semiconductor industry perspective, how we would make chips faster without more heat is by using a smaller node fabrication. Since there's no public information on what node they used, it'll be a bit of a challenge to guess. Sony may have used the bleeding edge of 2020 and used TSMC's N7 to make the BIONZ XR chip. Or they would've saved a lot of money if they've used older nodes such as 10nm, which surprisingly a lot of companies still use today for niche chips where price is more important than speed. But if they did use something advanced as TSMC's N7 node, we are just about at a good enough yield rates for TSMC's N3 to be mass producing chips. This should be around double the speed of N7 at the same power consumption. Now we are almost approaching the point where quantum mechanics prevents us from making transistors any smaller, and we have seen recent reports with the new n3 node wouldn't make the cache die any smaller. What we do is innovate and start trying to stack chips such as with the Ryzen X3D series of chips or using a big little architecture. As long as humans crave more power, we will find ways to achieve it, even if it's a band aid fix over a major issue. For the longest time, we have been etching wafers with 200nm wavelength light for 22nm, or 14nm transistors, but since 2017 EUV allows us to etch wafers with 13.5 nm wavelength.

I used to like sensors with 1:1 readout however lens corrections applied in camera lose sharpness as the resizing is NOT LOSSLESS. You really need to oversample the image before you apply corrections to maintain sharpness.

other than the firmware update that the A7iv has i genuinely think the a7Siii has soo much going for it now
and getting a new version would only increase it by a small margin such as the Canon R6 to R6ii
the next BIG upgrade i would consider is
12 bit colour over 10bit colour
raw internal recording up to 30FPS
same amazing low light with 26MP rather than 12MP maybe?

You can't achieve the same low light performance if you decrease the pixel pitch. Unless they opted for a black silicon sensor (that means shooting without an UV/IR cut filter btw) it could achieve the same results.
Sony could go the 6k route with an A7Siv. In addition to an improved sensor, more resolution could make for great video scaled down
Easy solution, make the A7Siv bigger (like the C70) to accommodate a faster chip and ndf. I would buy one in a heartbeat. I have my A7iv which is an amazing hybrid camera and I would use that on days where I didn't want to deal with a larger camera.

Ironically, Canon R5 does indeed have almost everything you could wish for with the Canon EF to RF adapter that has built in ND filter, and use a Canon EF lens with the zoom rocker that you put on the lens, thats almost a camcorder at that point. Sony has something similar with their video lenses for E-mount but it does not have ND filter built in. That has to be put on the front, which I suppose is doable.

What camera would you choose, the Sony fx3 or the canon r6 mark 2? For documentary/vlog content, I also take pictures occasionally. Great Content.
Good question. The problem is that once you choose Sony or Canon you’re kinda stuck because all your lenses. I’m stuck with Sony. But if I was starting over today and had to decide between the FX3 or the R6ii, I would lean towards the R6ii because I believe it is a better stills camera and I also enjoy photography and the FX3 is not a great stills camera. But I can respect either choice. Good luck.

I was there back in those days. They could beef it up and add a nice smooth servo zoom. Not one company has done this. All the lenses that have a powerized zoom are garbage and hard to handle while zooming. 2023 and we still have to go to a camcorder to get this.

FX30 is APS-C while A7sIII and it's predecessors are full frame. I was thinking about FX30, but wouldn't want to go from full frame to crop.

still need... an FX body with ND filters, more options for anamorphic and aspect ratios, and a damn EVF, and a brighter LCD.. and shutter angle.. and global shutter..

What is the FX3 as good for photos? What is the best full frame sony photography camera?
For photos I would choose the Sony a7Rv as the best. The fx3 isn’t great for photos because of the low megapixels and its button layout makes photos a pain to even take. The a7iv is a great hybrid camera because it switches between photo and video well, but for photos mostly, I say the a7R5. Good luck.
browsing the internet it is said to be released in q3 or 4. I am mostly waiting for improved dynamic range, new color science and an 'awsome' 5 axis ibis for steadier footage (specially with longer lenses). btw, cool video!

But the argument about heat doesn't really convince me, given the existence of the Sony A1, not to mention the option of the newest heat transfer technologies, such as those in operation in 2023 thin and light gaming laptops.

Ha! Loved the creative production on this one! I had the Sony VX-9000 back in ‘97. I started using my Nikon D800 for video, realised it’s limitations, and now have the FX30; massive learning curve (despite my background in tech).

@@storybabble it’s shooting log which is baffling me, then post processing. As a photographer, I always shoot raw, and have a good understanding. But as a videographer, woah 🤯. Flexible ISO, Cine EI (or El Cine, as i call it), PP11, Slog, Slog Cine etc. Then when I look at my footage, I’ve completely lost my natural creative flair. It’s frustrating and disappointing. It took a lot of head scratching for me to transition from 35mm film to digital (imagine Fred Flinstone in a Tesla!). I will get there. Always do. But it’s disheartening when I see the creative talent of those decades younger than me who haven’t had the experience i have under my belt, but their work is so inspirational. I have a lot of work to do. Slow and steady!
@@Melenie I feel your pain about S-Log 3. I shoot a lot of things in S-Cinetone when I can control the light and there isn’t a wide dynamic range in the scene. You have me thinking about running some tests between s-log and s-cinetone. Thanks for the reply.

I have the Panasonic GH5 in my ad revenue and income do not justify an upgrade. However I am currently making more videos and I would love a new camera. My list is similar to yours
I see a lot of great work coming from the GH5. But it seems like we all have a similar list for our next camera. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

The FX3 isn't better than the A7s III, you are ditching the photography part of the camera which the A7s series could fair well. Especially if you make content for social media platforms. There are many improvements to be made for the camera, and just because YOUR own desired specifications are met, does not mean that there is no room for improvement. Lack of updates could hint as well for an upcoming new model. The A7 models are trash because they are mainly focused on photography and lack a ton in the videography side of the spectrum. I feel like only the R and S versions should exist at this point. The rumors of the A7s being 24 megapixel are hilarious and is Sony does end up releasing it like that they are beyond stupid. This is going to be a huge hit on low light performence, as well as rolling shutter and it could and will hurt more features. No one needs 6K/8K and if you do, go ahead and purchase a cine camera or a Canon camera. I wish that the upcoming A7s IV would be similar to the Canon ME20F-SH and GH6.

Canon's overheating issues were manufactured. There's a lot of wriggle room with those bodies. :)
I have a fs100. I grow a beard many times waiting for a firmware that came to other cameras. Sony tend to develop new cameras rather tan updating firmware as other brands do

It makes no sense focus breathing and better auto tracking are not cinema camera exclusive features. They are deliberately withholding these features for no reason. I'm not even talking about a new menu or lots. It's crazy. If I had bought the A1...I don't think I would be able to manage my rage after investing that type of money just to be ignored. 3 years later and crickets. They got me this time with the a7s3. I won't be making another Sony purchase mistake again though.

By the way, I have the good ole Sony a6000 (original apsc Overheating Monster). So Sony wants us to move over to the Lumix active cooling cams if we want Active Cooling Hybrids. So it goes. Adios. 😎😎

I do love a good EVF. Maybe they could make it a modular option in future modes. Just an idea.
There are a few EVF options available, the one getting the most traction is pretty much a loupe that you strap onto the LCD with a couple of rubber bands. Doesn't seem right somehow.
