Man, it feels like this camera just came out. Today we're not only talking about the a7s3 but also how quickly modern tech moves. The Sony A7S mk3 is my main camera and I use it every single day for not only it's primary purpose of video creation, but also for photography. I absolutely adore the A7SIII for not only it's specs but also it's form factor and the general feeling I get when using it. I think it's going to be an incredible camera for years to come, but is it still a smart buy for professionals almost 2 years later? Let's find out.

Thank you for this great video! I have had the Sony a6400 for almost 3 years now. I feel like it's time to upgrade to the Sony a7iii and I wasn't sure if it's worth it, especially because of the price tag. I do mostly video content and your video definitely helped me to decide.

I’ve been loving my A7SIII since I got it back in December. While higher frame rates and more color bit rate sounds enticing for the next upgrade (either the A7SIV or FX3 Mark II if Sony ditches the 7S lineup), the video quality that this camera produces is insane already. I think this one could easily follow in the footsteps of the A7III which more than a half a decade later it is a decent buy this day and age.

Truly appreciate your videos on this camera as I’m about to trade for it for my a7IV. I do anticipate a mind blowing a7S IV update in the near future. I can’t wait to see what this low light beast is all about. It’s still hard to appreciate it from TH-cam videos.

It’s a perfect camera. The only upgrades I see would be to create larger version with a built in battery grip, larger and better quality display, and possibly a triple ISO at 25,600. Maybe some features from the A1 like the dial on the top for different FPS.
I'd also like them to give us the focus breathing comp and an anamorphic mode. Those are all great features

After watching a several dozen videos on the same subject, I’m quite impressed! Your video was excellent, informative, and allowed for your opinions to be personal yet informative in the objective sense. Im currently upgrading from an A7II, and I’ve been trying to decide between an A7SIII and an FX3. Thanks for the video! Question though, if you were planning to vlog and EDC this camera, which lens would you consider? I’ve been looking at the 24mm GM since it seems the most versatile, and it’s small enough to flip the camera and screen around with.
The 24mm gm is a great lens. If I was buying only one lens I would start on the wide end and move in towards telephoto because you can always get closer with a wide angle but you can only get so far away with a telephoto. Among a bunch of other reasons. Either one you pick you'll be happy with

shooting stills the numbers of shots can be determined thus evaluating how much the camera was used, but can video usage can be found when buying second hand?

Really in-depth video and I appreciate your nuance. I'm coming from micro 4/3 so I am really trying to figure out the best camera. 4K 120 full frame is a must for me
Just be aware that I felt that way too (4k120 is a must) and I almost never use it now.
@@SamuelJamesVideos well I shoot in 4K 60 so all might be rolls shots will probably be 120. Although I'm thinking about renting a camera first and testing out. If the Sony A7S3 was not 2 years old that would be my first choice. A lot of people are telling me Cannon is the way to go. It's hard

You wont be disappointed especially if you get the right lenses to go along with it

Do you think a7siii worth to buy in 2024 or should i go with a7iv?
I'm looking to buy the Sony a7S iii for video work. My priorities are low light capability and auto focus. Now the Sony FX3 is out and close to the same price. My questions are:
1. Is the FX3 as good as the a7s iii for low light and auto focus? (I think the answer is yes but I'm just checking.)
2. Will I miss the view finder?
2.1. In bright light, is the built-in monitor on the back of the FX3 bright enough to judge the focus.
2.2. Is there a reasonably prices external view finder you would suggest?
2.3. Is there an external monitor with all the bells and whistles (false color, zebras, histograms, waveforms, and RGB parade) that you would recommend?

The FX3 is the exact same internals/performance as the A7siii - If you don't have a separate photo camera I would want a viewfinder so I at least had something for photo - Personally I don't use an external monitor but I would if I could afford a good one - Atomos Ninja V - There's also a Monitor + app for android phones that's great and has all the bells and whistles as you put it.
@@SamuelJamesVideos Thanks for the response. That's a good idea. I just upgraded from the Pixel 3 XL to the Pixel 7 XL so that would work. Another point, I think Sony is updating the firmware on the FX3 more often than the A7S iii.

You really don’t know how much you value a good screen until you use a camera with a good screen. An a7s4 with a high quality & larger screen would DEFINITELY be worth the upgrade for me. Other features would be:
-Even higher dynamic range (wud b insane)
-Shutter angle
-Focus breathing comp
-More exposure tools
I hope Sony listens. In the meantime I agree this cam is still a beast
I'd love if they just made at least like a cellphone sized screen on a camera. I'd take the larger form factor for that. It'd be amazing if it were an OLED as well
The Sony A7 R5 better than the S3 tho? R5 is the same price and also much much higher res just don’t know how the video compares

The a7siii has a 12mp sensor, and I'd imagine a lot better features overall. I would wait however because I think the price will come down soon.

@@jackiechan8840 you're talking about a whole different camera, the a7(S)III is a video oriented camera, the a7III is a hybrid photo and video camera
Hi Samuel, could you give me a fast advise here? I want to make a nice rig to create action sports content: I'm concern about the a7S III with no cooler in the summer... Would be better to get the FX3 (i don't use any other extra from FX3) just for the active cooler? My concern is about overheating the A7S III in a 34ºC (93ºF) summer in a long shoot! My second problem is about the price: the FX3 is €800 Euros more expensive, just for the cooler! I don't want the cannon R5 C because of the lens, they are much more expensive and have not that much choice as for the E mount from Sony. Thanks for your kind support... Have a nice new year!
This depends on what format you're planning on shooting in. If you're going to shoot in 4k60/4k120 a lot I would say get the FX3. If you're not worried about higher frame rates and want to get the camera faster then just get the a7siii. But if I were in your situation I would save and get the FX3 either way because then you'll have the option to shoot 4k without worrying. Let me know if you have more questions

I saw it! What's your budget looking like? Choosing a new camera system really comes down equally between what glass you want as well as your body selection. They're both equally important and a lot of factors other than price are important. Do you want the best of the best autofocus? Do you want expensive lenses only? Canon does not allow third party lens companies like Sigma to make lenses for RF mount as far as I know so you'll be stuck with the native lenses which are very expensive. This is part of the reason I went with Sony although Gmaster lenses aren't much better but there are a lot more options. Let me know what your budget is

@@Agetcashhh Okay so that's a really good amount to start with. Considering you also want to shoot photography I would go with the Canon R5 or R5C. Canon makes a wonderful product and you're honestly not going to go wrong with either one of the cameras you listed but if I were more into photography I probably would have went with an R5 or R5c. I am mostly a video guy which is why I went with the a7siii plus I already had a bunch of sony lenses. I hope this helps. As an aside another camera I would look at is the newer Sony A7R5. It has incredible video capabilities and even better photography specs along with having a great form factor.

If they released an A7S IV with a higher resolution sensor, wouldn't that enable you to capture higher quality 4k video also? Assuming full sensor readout and no crop, I mean.
That is in theory what would happen, which would be really nice. Even the video on the new a7r5 looks a bit nicer in certain ways than my a7siii. I'm surprised at how nice actually. I'm considering getting one if the a7s4 doesn't have anything really enticing
@@SamuelJamesVideos The a7r5 looks pretty nice, but 4k60p recording is a priority for me and I'm not sure how I feel about the 1.2x crop.
@@SamuelJamesVideos After careful consideration, I think I will go with the Canon EOS R3. However, the Canon EOS R5 C was a close contender. Both of those cameras can record full frame 4k60p 10-bit 4:2:2 with full pixel readout and no binning. The R3 in particular performs very well in rolling shutter tests and is comparable to the Sony a7S III in that regard. The R5C has a higher resolution sensor, allowing it to record up to 8k, but I would personally rather have the better rolling shutter performance. I also find the R5C fan to be a downside, even though it helps prevent overheating when recording at very high resolutions/framerates. Unless I am missing something, the R3 should be better nearly across the board for photography and videography compared to the a7S III.

Right now 100% I wouldn't get it. There's the ZV-E1 that has the same processor and internals and is way less money and then who knows what the a7s4 is going to be like

I picked up the body for 2100 Used in solid condition. I think if you pay anywhere from 2500-2800 it would be worth it in 2023
Realistically until they update the S line (if they do) it's still worth it because it's the most up to date of it's breed. However it's pretty insane that you can get the same internals and sensor in cameras that are much smaller and less expensive from sony now.

But Sony FX30 has already been released, at a price of $ 1800. It has a lot of interesting features that Sony7S3 doesn't have.

I'd agree with the Canon R5, if they had native lenses of any type I'd actually care about.
Sony's lens selection will prevent Canon from earning my money for years to come, going by their pitiful Lens-Roadmap...

The a7s3 needs to go away and here's why. Every single s3 owner that reviews this camera complains that it doesn't have the features of the FX3. It's a horrible hybrid. Sony would better stick with the a7c, a7iv, and FX3. No matter what Sony does to the a7s3 it will never do what the FX3 does. The model doesn't make any sense whatsoever and owners will continue to complain about video features by comparing them with the FX3.
I have no clue what you're talking about I wanted this camera way more than I wanted the FX3 because it has a viewfinder. The s3 is a perfectly fine camera and I love it. The a7c is identical to the a7iii in terms of performance and you're not complaining about that?
@@SamuelJamesVideos Not saying it's a bad camera. It's just photo centric and not the best hybrid. The a7iv makes more sense as a hybrid. If I were focusing on video I would get the FX30 and put a Ninja V+ on it. For photos I have the a7iv and just ordered the a7rv. Again it's all about personal preference and it's clear that a ton of a7s3 owners are unhappy with less features than the FX30 when they both have the same guts.

This probably will never happen, but I think I’d be cool if the A7S IV was medium format. Right now the latest A7S camera has a 12mp full frame sensor and each megapixel is roughly 8.5 microns big. The pixels being that big is what makes the A7S III a low light beast. 12mp on a medium format sensor would make the pixels even bigger thus making the A7S IV a low light god. With a medium format sensor it’s duel native ISO’s could be 1280 & 25,600. If they could throw in a third native ISO, make the camera 12bit, add an XLR port and a 1500 nit MiniLED touch screen the camera would be the mirrorless GOAT for years and years to come. It might even be the first camera to win a Nobel peace prize.
I am in love with everything except the MP. Also medium format means lenses that are ridiculously expensive. I think the resolution leaves something to be desired at certain times. Even my 24mm Gmaster doesn't look as tack sharp as I feel it should. I think a 24 mp sensor would be the perfect spot. Not too much like the a74 but not too little like it is now. Add that to an OLED screen and brightness sharpness bump and we got a winner.
