  • At its height in the 1960's Pan Am was the country's unofficial flag carrier to the rest of the world. But by the 1970's some very down to earth troubles were clipping the wings of the Pan Am clippers. "Sunday Morning" opens their Almanac to December 4th, 1991 when Pan American World Airways shut down operations.

    I got to fly on one of the last Pan Am flights to Germany in 1990. We took out of New York and made a fuel stop in Amsterdam and then on to Germany. I was like 10 at the time.

      You will need to have the politicians in your pocket. Politicians and professional jealousy are what pulled PanAm down.

    It's a shame I've always seen Pan Am as the way air travel should be dignified, not the sardine cans we fly in today

    • @Embargoman
      @Embargoman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      devastator5042 The new PanAm is now headuarted in the Middle East it is called Erimites Airlines it is the modern day PanAm.

      Emirates Airlines is hyper luxury. That is not the same as Pan Am offering dignified flying for the middle class. The middle ground has really kind of disappeared. In 2018 you can either fly first class luxury or in sardine class. We don't need to be treated like a Prince but it would be nice to be treated like a human being. What ever happened to wide regular seating with reasonable legroom and good food. That is was Pan Am did best. It was the airline for the middle class.

      Novusod have you been on an emirates plane? I did I was in coach and it’s 100 times better than any other airline, great legroom, food was decent for plane food, entertainment was so great my 9 hour flight felt like 4 hours. Also staff are friendly and generous with drinks and snacks. The hype around first class and business is so/so but economy is also great.

    I still have my Pan Am credit card. A souvenir I have from when airlines didn't squeeze passengers into planes like they're transporting cattle.

    Pan Am was the reason why Boeing built the 747 and that started the "Jumbo Revolution." Back in the day when Pan Am shut down, that was their only option under bankruptcy laws at that time. Today, they could have sold their remaining assets and paid off their creditors, took what money was leftover and started a new low cost, low budget carrier flying B-737's or A-319's. From that, they could have grown, if they so desired or stayed just as a low cost carrier.

    • @G-546
      @G-546 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Big and better planes would have came even if it wasn’t the 747. Maybe we would have supersonic planes today because with no 747 Boeing could have gone supersonic instead. Or we could have just seen Boeing make a plane like the DC-10 or L-1011 instead.

    My last flight with PanAm was between Miami-L.A in July 1991. Working on cruise ships and shifting ships then from M/S Song of Norway to M/S Sun Viking. We from Scandinavia used to fly PanAm from Heathrow, England. Then we fly the 747 when we worked in Miami. Those were the days.

    Pan Am was so innovative over the years, but it's great weakness was that it had no domestic US routes to funnel passengers to its international hubs on the coasts.

    • @G-546
      @G-546 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pan Am also didn’t bank their hubs having all the planes arrive at once than leave at once. That made connections very long.
