The Pet Rock Fad - As Crazy as It Sounds?

  • The Pet Rock was a short lived fad that peaked in popularity during the 1975 holiday season. It sounds ridiculous on the surface but maybe not as much when given a closer look. It's considered to be one of the best marketed products of all time and though that statement may be true, this video offers a alternate way to look at it.

Mine ran away. Sadly, many were taken from the wild. Without proper domestication, they were untrainable. But most were calm, respectable pets.

    • @grantbitman1448

It's a myth that any rock can be domesticated. They are all wild underneath that calm exterior, and will turn on their owner in a moments notice. How many bruises and head injuries is it going to take to convince people that rocks are a dangerous pet?

    • @Riley1800

Rocks are dangerous creatures and can attack any moment. Everyone with a rock is in danger and needs to send them to a proper facility.

Personally, I think you nailed it when you credit the manual as the actual product. My father bought one back when they were new, I was only 7 at the time, and he laughed at the manual saying it was comedy gold. He lost the rock, the box and the stuffing, but held on to the manual until his death. I found it in a box marked, "70s" and it was in there with bits and pieces of 70s stuff; Hot Wheels car, McDonald's toy, Atari cartridge, Captain & Tennille 8-track tape, a KISS doll, etc.

I remember it. I was in college in Chicago. It was treated as what is known as a "gag gift". That's a gift intended to be s silly humorous gift, like a "round tuit", a bottle, or can, of air from (location name goes here), etc. They are generally inexpensive and intended to amuse the recipient, the recipient's family or co-workers. It worked, too. Everybody chuckled for the entire Christmas season that year, and not one of them was returned for being the wrong size, or color. The ASPCA did get a few phone calls about people abusing their pet rocks, but they were all deemed unfoounded.

One thing all of you must remember: At the time of marketing, Monty Python was starting to find a foothold in the USA with _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ and PBS airings of the _Flying Circus_ show.
The Pet Rock is peak Python absurdism: a hunk of matter which is being treated with all the seriousness of a pet hamster.

I was in college at the time and didn't know anyone that didn't get it. I thought the Pet Rock was hilarious, it was the epitome of the perfect easy to care for pet and a great joke and conversation starter all in one with the book being at the center of it all. I knew people that had little houses for theirs with a bed and bath who would take them outside for walks, etc. and for them it was maybe taken a bit too seriously. For most it was just fun and to answer why the craze? People want to be in on "it" whatever the "it" is and when one person sees what alot of other people want, they want it too. That's all, human nature and why clever advertising works.

3:21 hilariously this is ACTUAL advice for a lot of pet reptiles. Once you get it, you put it in the tank and leave it alone (still feeding it regularly, of course!) for like 2 weeks. Otherwise they can become overstressed and their health will suffer.

I'm old enough to remember that period clearly and how people joked about this silly product, I didn't buy it and didn't know anyone that did. I'm surprised it sold for $4 which was a good chunk of money at the time when gas was 0.70/gallon. It was not until 1980s when a commentator summed up why it was so popular. 1975 was two years after gas prices doubled, Vietnam war ended and US didn't have much to show for it, Watergate concluded a year before, inflation was running amok. It's as if the illusion of US is #1 in everything from incredible economic prosperity from 1950s through 60s, landing a man on the moon, concept of road trips when gas was cheap and plentiful (and the gas stations were service stations because they pump the gas for you plus clean windows, check oil, tire pressure). The Pet Rock was comical relief during this period of time.

There's a period context that understandably, without having been around during that time, you haven't picked up on. There were multiple fads of essentially useless products through the seventies. It was a period when people loved jumping on the fad train for the latest gimmick, for no better reason than to belong to the rest of the group that had. It still happens today of course, but in the '70s it was still novel, so the products and their marketing could be very simplistic, with no need to concoct a basis of value or efficacy. Simpler times.

When he was a kid, my dad wanted a lizard. My grandfather bought him a pet rock instead and said he could have the lizard in 3 months if he properly cared for the rock. My dad got an aquarium and put the rock inside, gave it (fake) food each day and changed the water every few days, and added stuff to the tank each week to make it a cool place for a lizard to live. Three months later he got his lizard and kept the rock in there to keep the lizard company. When the lizard eventually died, he buried the lizard and the rock together in his backyard. Maybe Gary Dahl could have spun it that way too, like as a "starter" pet as well as a gag gift.

I saw this some years ago and imo the best Part is the training to defend you part:
    Attack Training.
A rock is a loyal, devoted pet that can
easily be trained to protect you and
your family. Woe be to the burglar or
prowler who ventures into the home
guarded by a PET ROCK-or the
mugger who attempts to accost a PET
    ROCK's master.
There are two basic attack methods to
    teach your PET ROCK.
    1.) Long Distance Attacks
    2.) Close Range Attacks
    Long Distance Attacks.
In those instances when your adversary is at a distance (such as when a
bully kicks sand in your face on the
beach and keeps on running), your
PET ROCK will respond to the challenge instantly and effectively in assuring that it never happens again.
First, wipe the sand from your eyes.
Next, pick-up your PET ROCK. Shout
    the command, ATTACK!, and throw
your rock at the bully with all your
might. This method of protection is
    sure-fire and results are guaranteed,
although you may want to practice your
    aim before attempting this maneuver.
    Close Range Attacks.
If you are threatened at close range
always use the Close Range Attack
Method; it is the ultimate form of personal protection. The element of surprise enters into this attack method,
    thereby making it doubly effective.
A pet rock poised for the attack.
    When the adversary approaches within
arm's length and demands all your
money, credit cards, and other valuables follow these easy steps:
Reach into your pocket or purse as
though you were going to comply
    with the mugger's demands. Extract
your PET ROCK. Shout the command,
ATTACK. And bash the mugger's head
    in.
PET ROCKS really seem to enjoy this
exercise and, in most cases, come
away from the attack little the worse
    for wear.

Unfortunately, all I had were Post-it Notes, so i had to break up the message in two parts. The note was supposed to read:
"You seem so lonely, here's a pet rock to keep you company.
Get out of the house before you die."
Even though I had a couple of problems delivering it to her, number one of which was that her window was closed. The first paragraph fell off the rock before it made it, but I think she got the idea. Before too long, there were lots of people at her house.

i've known about the pet rock my whole life because my mom told me about it since i was little! but- i only knew about the rock part of it and thought it was bizarre and silly. i had no idea about the manual, but damn if that doesn't contextualize the fad... thanks for the great video ^^

My mom told me about pet rocks when I was a kid and I loved the idea so much I made a sculpture inspired by it! I took two rocks, painted faces on them, hot glued them togther, and displayed them with a label explaining that the pair were conjoined "magnetic twins."
I was a slightly weird child.

This was WAY before my time, but I understand at a glance that the idea of a "pet rock" is a very clear and obvious parody of the concept of owning a pet. Of course a rock can't be a pet... But that's why it's funny. Four bucks are totally worth the fun of your friends coming over one day, and you getting to tell them, "Oh, watch out for Rocky there, he tends to bite". xD

    • @flinch622
      @flinch622 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

And... for some parents the gag was too good to pass up. Maybe they didn't want to feed an animal/have vet bills so they foisted this half baked prize on junior as a "compromise" gift. Others who rented and suffered a 'no pets' clause found some much needed relief knowing the furniture would never be clawed, or that the neighbors would never be whining about barking habits - very handy in some place like NYC. Place conspicuously where the landlord could spot it during a visit and dare them to set foot in court on an eviction action!

But four dollars was a lot in 1975. I always wanted the submarine and x-ray glasses sold in comic books. I even made one very expensive spear as a child...cut a broom handle and hammer a nail in it. Then grind the head off on our fancy electric can opener with knife sharpener...basically a grinder. Brother throws spear into my foot playing chicken..doctor visit that night. Horrible pain in my eye that night resulted in multiple visits to remove metal from my eye...with a tiny drill. My Mother said next time she would just buy me a spear...much cheaper. Total of about 300 dollars in 1966. We rode bikes without helmets, rode the insanely dangerous park merry go rounds that you pushed as fast as possible. Cars did not even have seat belts. We even had bb guns at 10 years old, and walked to school. We never even went inside til dark. Even when I remember it all it was surely dangerous, and yet we survived it all, and even went to drive in movies a lot. Somehow I look at kids today with their ipads and mp3 players and know they are deprived. Adults worked hard and children played hard and inside was where we would eat and sleep. I think our generation had the best childhood in history, and the current children can not even come close. Somehow all the electronic gadgets have worked to make family less close, and less fun. People have many more conveniences now, but that has come at a high cost to what was always most important.
