Definitely 100% agree. If you had already had APSE lenses I would’ve definitely just stuck with the FX 30 but now that you’re invested in the full-frame line there’s no point you going with this camera unless you want a running gun type of cinema camera that you can use your full-frame lenses and then just buy one APSE land for the wider shot and be fine for a condensed camera for video for other than that I would just stay with your cold frame and maybe eventually get A FX 3 or a7siii
I shoot with the a7siii, the primary reason I want the FX30 is to run it with the 18-105. It's just the most practical Gimbal Run N Gun kit in all of Sony.

A7IV's low light is much better, Stabilization looks better on A7IV as well, and my main concern is IQ ... the picture is pretty flat ... I don't know how to explain it, but it looks flat. A7IV and A7sIII create amazing depth of field and the video looks more alive, not as plastic as on fx30, you know what I mean, right? So, yes, the price is good and there are so many features, but do I like the image quality? I'd rather say no than yes. and I believe that's why the price is so aggressive. I do think A7IV wins low-light, no question. However I think the Fx30 had clearly better rolling shutter performance than the a74. Not as good as the fx3 and a7siii but still very good. I think if you're a hybrid shooter the a74 is definitely the way to go. If you're a video content creator (especially if you're just starting out) I believe the fx30 to be the better choice. Cheaper body, better video-focused body, cheaper lenses (although you can use fullframes if u want), and also has some specs that are better than the a74. I wont be getting the fx30 but I think its a great new addition to the lineup
I had the FX3 and sold it, never really needed 120p 4K. Although it was a great camera, I decided to get and A7IV bc I need a good camera for photography as well. I absolutely love it. Only "bummer" is the 60p crop bc I shoot 90% of my video work in 60p but also do not shoot wider than 24mm ever. So paid with the 17-28 and 28-75 G2 Tamron, It is perfect. I see the FX30 for people who already had a crop sensor camera and lenses that want to get a more cinematic camera. Otherwise I would much rather have FF and FF lenses. Bodies will come and go. If the FX"4" gets Full DCI 4K I would think about getting one of those in the future. I actually prefer the Blackmagic cameras but since I am a solo shooter I could not deal with worrying about focusing all the time and was the reason I sold it too. If need, I can always rent any camera I want.
That makes a lot of sense honestly! I totally agree. If you’re in apsc it’s a great camera the fx 30, but if you’re going from full frame, it would only make sense maybe if you need a b cam. For me the fx30 would be a great starter cinema camera if I didn’t own any previous gear and was trying to start getting into videoing more. If you want a hybrid camera then the a7iv will be it definitely!
Yep, this is why I’m replacing one of my A74 with this amazing FX30 - compact lenses, no crop 4K60, no overheating for daylong shoots makes this my new run-n-gun camera
Owning the a7IV, fx30 would have caught my attention a little more if that second native ISO was 6400 or 12800, and it cleaned up as well as the full frames. I know that’s unrealistic.
There are pros out their who've shot super 35 their entire careers, who are going to buy the FX30. There are documentary filmmakers that will make this their main camera. The cinema lenses designed for super 35 is insane. It just makes sense. You can match almost any shot with the glass out there now. Calling it a "start up" cinema camera is really selling it short. Productions out their with the budget for one FX3 b-cam, will likely be buying two FX30s instead. With all the used a7IVs hitting the market, hybrid shooters will have something to think about.
Definitely agree! Only reason I see it as a start up cinema camera is for the price point since people can start with this and move on their way up to the full frame eventually! People will definitely have some options going forward regardless.
4K huge crop in fx30 is a great deal ? I think hardware is bad in this camera, but software make it good for some point but not in this price rage. It’s not worth to buy fx30 vs 7iv.
If you are a cinematographer and you use full frame, raise your hand 🙋♂️ A super 35 sensor is not a deal breaker for me. Blackmagic, RED and ARRI use it so 🤷🏻♂️ Yes, you do have less background compression, and I think the dynamic range on the FX3 is just 13 stops as compared to the FX3's 16 stops. For cinematography The FX30 is a camera I would recommend before the FX3. I currently use my A7IV as a B camera and for taking pictures and don’t own any FX line cameras. I prefer the more straightforward menus found on most dedicated cinema cameras, as well as the color science that Sony cameras lack. At the end creating content and being good doesn’t have anything to do with gear or sensor size
Very true but I mean still 4k though and also since it’s already an apsc mode camera id probably not notice it haha but it being 4k is nicer to me than 1080p for 120 without a crop
The only advantage to me is the new menu. The A74 is much better value. If you don't need the top handle whats the advantage. Less DOF Less lowlight No EVF Less dynamic range. Tamron are about to release a 20-40 f2.8, try to match that type of lens on a crop body.
This is for anyone who's like me and loves Hybrid shooting. Id personally go with the a7iv due to it does everything the Fx30 can do and some even better, the only thing is its a 1k more than the fx30 but if you cop the external mic set up that automatically comes with the Fx3, then the fx30 is pretty close price wise with the a7iv...and there are a7iv kits that has everything for just under 3k. So if ya'll shoot BOTH Cinema style footage AND photos equally...then the fx30 might not be your bag. HOWEVER the fx30 does have 26mp in stills so if you're not doing prints, that could be a great entry cinema cam with good stills capabilities as well. Either way, think it thru on what works BEST for your workflow. For me the a7iv is perfect for ME.
@@Military872 if your budget allows, I would look at the Sony A1 since it has very fast shutter speed for photography and it’s good with high shutter and information but if your budget doesn’t allow it I would get the Sony a 74 because it’s a phenomenal photo camera and it’s very fast that they call it a baby Sony A1. And I would just make sure to keep my shutter speed. Hi so that you can freeze the shot and keep it sharp!
@@Military872 ahh ok haha well for video for that depends. I’d you have already apsc lenses then go for the fx30, but if you have full frame lenses then I’d go for the fx3 or a7siii! The a7siii & the fx3 low light is great so that’s something to consider depending when you plan to shoot the videos.
I’m not familiar with either camera but I rather spend it on the fx30 because it’s affordable and up to date… plus already spending so much on the PC build a year ago I rather just buy the fx30 because It’s at my price range.
What’s your thoughts on pairing the fx30 with the A7IV? I was also considering maybe a A7C for my photography camera and my A7IV for video? I would love your thoughts.
I would definitely pair the a7iv with the fx30! That’s at colour matching would be easier than the a7c in my eyes. The a7c isn’t bad but having only one card slot isn’t too good in my eyes and for the price I’d probably upgrade to the fx30 with an a7iv for the best bang for your buck for a long while!
I think the only one who actually compared those two was Jared. And like he says it all depends on the type of use if it’s video then this one make sense, but if you’re a hybrid shooter then the a74. Hey Im back around🤘🏼😅
So true! I did notice him making the comparison which was awesome because I kept seeing everybody comparing this camera to other cinema line cameras, which in reality doesn’t make sense despite of Sony trying to make this camera be a cinema camera it’s still not going to be in the same league as an FX3 or the other ones. But I’m glad to have you back around!

Are the stills good enough for product photography? Was considering the A6000 series but it's kind of outdated. This would double up great as a video (and limited-use still camera) if the stills are great
For more stationary shots I heard it’s ok but it’s not fully meant to be for photo due to it being a “cinema” style camera. I’d look up some examples since I sadly don’t have any!
Looking to upgrade my camera. I’m currently running an a6500 and a7rii. Been doing way more video than photo so this FX30 would really make sense for me. I had the same thoughts you did about the video features. I’ve had issues with overheating with my cameras and I’ve read and watched video that say the A7iv has overheating issues as well. The FX30 has the body of the FX3 that doesn’t deal with overheating like the A7iv. I’m hoping the FX30 doesn’t either.
If you already have apsc lenses and want to do more video then definitely go for the fx30! I think it would be very beneficial then for you to not have to spend more on full frame lenses if you already have the apsc ones for videos
So I just bought the a7iv a month ago and am still in the return period to bnh photo. We are a 2 shooter team and also have a a7siii. I shoot much of my work (wedding video) in 60fps so we obviously deal with the crop and had a few apsc lenses from a previous camera that we use with the a7iv. The reception time at a wedding has some hugely changing lighting conditions. The a7iv has more auto focus points like 725 or something and the fx30 450 or something in that range. any input would be appreciated.
I’d personally just stick with the a7iv if you already have it and is pairing with the a7siii. I think the low light might be better due to the full frame size that might be more beneficial for you in my eyes. But that’s just me. If you didn’t own the a7iv and wanted a good camera to match your a7siii then the fx30 could’ve been great for the budget.
@@EasyTigerCreative Its amazing how a professional can go out and shoot a video and make it look amazing even on a cheap camera. I want to be that guy someday. We are implementing more lighting at our wedding shoots and its so amazing! definitely helps with low light problems but as a wedding videographer their is always a situation you cant light what or don't have time to
@@sunnymeadowproductions739 definitely! Knowing your lighting conditions and being able to light things properly will always help to create better videos regardless of the camera! But definitely helps having a great camera to do the job easier haha
@@Minsetti yeah I know this is a video camera but the photo specs seem very basic which is a shame. Bit annoying they hold stuff back like this. Also annoyed that my 7IV has better features than my SIII, Sony firmware updates have been very disappointing so far.
Iso performance in full frame cameras tend to be better than apsc so the a7iv will have an upper hand technically but the fx30 having 4k all throughout Can help with quality still and the 10bit colour so it’s fine still!
@@EasyTigerCreative i just find information on one web site that, that you can use a focus breathing compensation feature in catalyst up to 4k 120p, so i think that we can use it and for gyro stabilization too) stiil thanks for your answer)

@@EasyTigerCreative thanks for your answer ! Sometime I work in good light conditions, sometimes in music studio, or backstage with poor light, or dance floor during wedding. I'm interested in the FX30 aslo for the 4k 120. I wish I could afford an fx3 or A7sIII but not for the moment !
@@sonjaudiovisuel3165 if you can, I’d look into more low light comparisons of it to see if having 2,500 iso for the dual iso works for you with the fx30
@@sonjaudiovisuel3165 I did the same haha so totally makes sense! I’ve enjoyed the low light with the a7iv at 3200 iso but from what I’ve seen with the fx30 it isn’t too bad. Apsc will make it not as smooth as others but for the price it’s not bad at all!
a7iv can be also a crop camera just press the crop button!a big advantage!!the absolute HYBRID CAMERA!fx3 and fx30 use the description "cinema line" for marketing reasons, only!!if you want cinema camera look for bm,red, and arri!cheers!
That’s true! But having a cheap video camera compared to everything else with that quality of specs is quite nice though! It won’t be a cinema camera like the ones you said but it’s a starting point for someone still!
Can you do a video on the a7iv comparing Raw L, Compressed Raw, Uncompressed Raw? Can’t seem to find out the differences 😅. The Sony a7iv has a 7K downscaled sensor it’s sharper than the fx30. But to be honest we always want new gear and convince our minds we need it when we really don’t.
I’ll definitely do a comparison and see what I can find out and share it here! And well the fx30 has a downscale sample from 6k to my knowledge too! So not too bad but the a7iv seems to be sharper and better fully. Just the price point for the fx30 is pretty good for getting into a cinema camera for only video rather than a hybrid camera with the a7iv.
This is amazing Kevin, im actually surprised sony doesnt send you cameras to review as your work and reviews are on a whole different level, but as you said maybe one day they will, i heard so much about the FX30
@@EasyTigerCreative i know it will happen because your way talented, i seen people whos work isnt as good as yours but still they represent sony cameras getting sent to them, i definatly believe it will happen one day for sure
I have an a7iii and getting itchy for a new body, especially with the mic in port being dead on it. I'd like to do more video stuff and the FX30 is really enticing. I probably wouldn't get rid of the a7iii for it though. Before it was announced, I was thinking about the a7C, but I hate the EVF on it, so the body on the FX30 is almost perfect. My only concern is that I love my 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180 on full frame, so the crop is a bit of a worry. Then maybe I can find someone to buy my a7iii and upgrade that to an a7iv if I do get an FX30 and decide I "need" my photo/video camera to be new too...
All solid reasons and options haha what you could do is still use the fx30 for video and only get an apsc lens for the wider range and use the rest accordingly! And then you can use your a7iii for photos! Apsc lenses are cheaper so that’s always nice if you need yo get like an 11mm

Get the A7IV friend. Trust me, you are going to miss that low light capability, and the full frame sensor will be veeery missed. Also, you'll really dislike having a bunch of noise at 3200 ISO. The FX30 is veeery noisy even in sunlight! I also own the A7III and I wouldn't trade it for the fx30. Because even tho it doesn't have 10bit, the image looks cleeean!
I need to get my mo income up. I am pretty deep into Canon. But I really want to play with Sony a bit. If I was going into Sony Today.. I'd get two bodies since I do both photo & video plus I generally need 2 bodies when shooting video. I'd get both the A7IV & FX30 I'd eventually scoop up an FX3
Had this come out a couple of months ago I would have bought it instead of the A7iv. Now however I'm a bit torn, because if I have to sell my A7iv, it will lose too much value, and I'm not sure this camera has that much new to offer. It's mainly the 'cinematic' form factor, being able to implementat LUTs, and better cooling that appeals to me. But the low light is not as good, the stops of dynamic range is worse, the rolling shutter strangely seems to be about the same (at least in cropped mode), plus the A7iv is Full Frame. All in all from my view point it makes littles sense. For someone like me looking for a similar camera setup, there are a lot of money to be saved.
I’d just keep that a7iv at this stage haha but maybe if you ever need a second camera this could be a great option to have one camera more video centred and one for a hybrid. That’s what I do with my a7siii and a7iv!
Keep the A7IV friend. Trust me, you are going to miss that low light capability, and the full frame sensor will be veeery missed. Also, you'll really dislike having a bunch of noise at 3200 ISO
That’s true! But oddly enough I haven’t had my a7iv overheat. But I also haven’t left it on consistently to have it overheat but it’s nice the body of the fx30 honestly.
bought the a7 4 half a year ago. seeing this now makes me feel kinda sad. dont get me wrong im pretty happy with my a74. and also got into photography. but still.... seing 4k120 makes me really sad cuz i really want that. i guess the fx30 will be the candidate for my future b cam. would love a comparison between fx30 4k120 vs a74 1080p120. great video sir
Well yes but if you already have a cropped sensor you’d be a little more fine with a slight crop in 4k 120 but at least it’s 4k. The a7iv is 1080p only sadly. But if you get some third party lenses you can build a solid setup!
@@nightshooter9013 how is it misleading? I’m saying since I already own the a7iv I wouldn’t get the fx30. If I had to choose one and didn’t own the a7iv, or my a7siii I would’ve gotten it since it’s such a good price for the specs.
FX 30 is a great second camera for podcasts and interviews, great for new content/video makers. But I don’t see reason for intermediate level video makers switching from A7IV to FX30
Definitely wouldn’t switch to it if I already have an a7iv, but if I was trying to do only video and didn’t own either, I’d definitely look into fx30 since the specs for that price is too good! But wanting to do more serious videoing then I’d definitely look into investing into something better but that’ll be a bigger jump in price sadly.
Kinda torn, I’m a photographer first looking to get into video, I already have the a7riv for photos so this is enticing. But a7iv will allow me to have another backup photo camera and a solid video camera, will also allow me to have a dual prime lens setup during shoots.
If that’s the case, and I would just go ahead and get the A74, if you already have prime lenses for full frame and another full frame camera, it would just make more sense to me because the A 74 has phenomenal videocapcapabilities and phenomenal photo capabilities The only reason that the FX 30 is a great choice as if it’s just only video that you’re looking for because I know you could do some stills but they’ll be in crop mode which personally I prefer full frame
Because it’s my opinion and my channel and subject that I felt like talking about. I’m able to make an opinion on the fact of the specs and the footage that have been able to review and things that I can compare because I’ve had the experience with plenty cameras.
1, your colors are awesome in this video. 2, I don't have time to watch full videos and only watch parts I'm interested in. Please put chapter markers! :D
Thank you! Appreciate that! And I usually do put chapter markers haha just this one was a bit tough to put with what I was talking about but I’ll try to do it more going forward! 😁❤️
I kind of feel like giving you the lecture my dad gave me about never taking a job for less money than your last. You DO NOT go from full frame back to starving artist APSC. The A7IV is better for video ALL DAY LONG. Not even just for the camera itself but equally the lenses. I feel like you have no clue what you are taking about so I am not sure why you are making these videos. Yea, it can't do 230fps to capture a drop of water falling in a 20 second video at 1080P, but for that rare as heck case my iPhone sure as hell can. Even if this is your 2nd or 3rd camera it sill makes no sense by the time you buy baby lenses for your APSC if you already have full-frame. Don't hold your beath for Sony to start sending you cameras until you study a bit harder. How someone makes review WITHOUT even RENTING the camera to use is ASANINE!
Well I guess your dad didn’t lecture you into paying attention then 😂 cause clearly I said if you don’t own an A7iv, and are needing only a video camera, then this would be a great camera to dive into a cinema line and a camera for pure videos for the price point. I even said that full frame is better for low light, and also for other things, but for the price point if you’re having to choose to start into one, the fx30 has a great starting point for the specs for the budget that allows you to get a great image. Full frame is better in many ways, but it’s not better if you don’t know how to use your camera. Anyone that knows how to use the camera correctly will be fine with either, look at people who shoot with Fuji that is apsc… the point is that if you don’t have a full frame camera, or if you’re wanting to upgrade your apsc camera, then the fx30 is a phenomenal camera for the budget to help you get a camera that has amazing video specs. I love comments like yours of people who just decide to comment idiotic things, without watching everything all the way through. Don’t need to rent a camera when I’ve used plenty of them to know what can be good or not. Would it be nicer to have the camera in person to test? Sure, but I can still make a well educated guess from my experiences, but I guess you wouldn’t know anything about that haha thanks for stopping by. Be better and do better next time!
@@EasyTigerCreative I heard you clearly but disagree 100%. There is no reason at this price point to go APSC even if you don't have an A7IV already. It's $600 more and now you have a professional, full-frame camera that can actually take incredible photos as well. There is no excuse to make reviews and recommend cameras to people without having used it. It's rediculous. Even here in Thailand, way up in NE Thailand in jungle land, I can and DO rent cameras to try before I buy. And if you can't afford to do that you are not successful enough in this industry to be recommending anything. It's one thing if you are reading specs and waxing philosophical but the moment you are recommending camera A over camera B when you have used neither, you are literally wasting the time and possibly the money of those who are nieve enough to trust you.

Owning the a7IV, fx30 would have caught my attention a little more if that second native ISO was 6400 or 12800, and it cleaned up as well as the full frames. I know that’s unrealistic.
I totally understand that!
If sony launches a speed booster for the fx30 I might consider switching selling the a7iv.
By the time they launch a speed booster they will have already launched a new camera. Then you will have to sell the fx30. :D
If it’s not for you it’s not for you and that’s ok!
If you are a cinematographer and you use full frame, raise your hand 🙋♂️
A super 35 sensor is not a deal breaker for me.
That’s so true!
The FX30 has a crop in 120fps though
Yeah that’s what is a bit of a bummer for sure.
Very true but I mean still 4k though and also since it’s already an apsc mode camera id probably not notice it haha but it being 4k is nicer to me than 1080p for 120 without a crop
Grab the new 11mm 1.8.
The 120fps in the a7IV is very clean. The 120fps on the fx30 has a crop which may cause a full pixel readout making the image softer.
@@streetlegends that’s what I’ve been hearing, or not hearing, from all the “reviewers” so far.
totally agree! 4k60p on FX30 = 4k60 on a7IV when talking about focal crop
Very true!
The only advantage to me is the new menu. The A74 is much better value.
If you don't need the top handle whats the advantage.
Less DOF
Less lowlight
No EVF
Less dynamic range.
Tamron are about to release a 20-40 f2.8, try to match that type of lens on a crop body.
Yea I totally understand that!
Solid points! Appreciate you sharing!
What would you recommend for shooting fast moving Aircraft.

Totally makes sense! Nothing wrong with that choice!
Thank you, this is exactly the question I had. I have APS-C lenses for use in crop in the A7IV. I really like the smaller form factor of those lenses.
Then the fx30 could be great for video for you!

For more stationary shots I heard it’s ok but it’s not fully meant to be for photo due to it being a “cinema” style camera. I’d look up some examples since I sadly don’t have any!
Here in Germany the fx30 comes in at 2800 $. This is a bummer. I'm still happy with my A7iv, especially cause I'm also more into Photowork than video.

Kevin: I think you made a good choice !!
@@sunnymeadowproductions739 definitely! Knowing your lighting conditions and being able to light things properly will always help to create better videos regardless of the camera! But definitely helps having a great camera to do the job easier haha
Does the fx30 have the full stills capability/ features as the Alpha cameras?
Yea it does! It has a 26mp so you would be able to do stills. It’s just a crop mode camera.
It's very very limited in stills mode. Only available mode is single shot and it has only an electronic shutter, no mechanical shutter.
@@Minsetti yeah I know this is a video camera but the photo specs seem very basic which is a shame. Bit annoying they hold stuff back like this. Also annoyed that my 7IV has better features than my SIII, Sony firmware updates have been very disappointing so far.
What about ISO performance ?
Iso performance in full frame cameras tend to be better than apsc so the a7iv will have an upper hand technically but the fx30 having 4k all throughout Can help with quality still and the 10bit colour so it’s fine still!
With the crop your 120p slow motion is the equivalent to MFT.
