    I have no problem acknowledging RE6's faults while still enjoying the vast majority of it. Try playing it on mouse and keyboard, and the added flexibility that comes from that control scheme turns it into the Devil May Cry of third person shooters. The amount of action movie bullshit you can completely improvise, especially with a coop partner, rockets this game up to one of my favorite action experiences out there.

      I've unironically loved the shit out of RE6 since the original release although the remastered port makes it far better. I really never understood the hate for RE6, then again I'm the type to love oddball or flawed games.

      Take away the "Resident Evil" title and characters, and you end up with a 90s action movie-like game with lackluster story, explosions everywhere, and entertainment for those who can turn off their brains and enjoy it.
      PS: A game that takes the idea of L4D2 with the controls of RE6 would be very cool these days.

    The zoomed out factor of the 1080p versions isn't because of resolution. It's all about performance. The zoomed in 720p doesn't have to draw as many assets at the same time, so the framerate will be more stable. People complained about how close the camera was to the player when it first came out too, and Capcom updated it to be more zoomed out

      It's called FOV is a normal staple of pc gaming (being able to adjust) and some console games offer limited access to adjust it for a select few games.
      Devs have also been known to release updates like this when they find they can open up the viewport without it hitting performance too hard.
      On pc with all the different variations of performance they can just leave it open with a default choice thag works for most and let users customize it to their liking / systems ability.

    • @unsavourylittlerunt
      @unsavourylittlerunt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know about the original console ports but on PC you have the original low FOV camera by default but they patched in three separate camera settings you can increase to match the PS4 version's default. Resolution would only really affect something like this if the aspect ratio was different

  • @natayaway

    15:37 - mt framework was never the bottleneck, the game was designed for the xbox 360 and ps3 with 512MB of shared memory/256MB of dedicated VRAM respectively. and unlike RE5 before it, the textures they employed in RE6 were not overly repeated/tiled with vertex painted masks to hide the repetition, they actually went and textured almost everything uniquely, and had exponentially more individual set dressings per level than in RE5. that explains the necessarily low resolution textures.
    16:40 - some of those QTEs that you're displaying are actually just standard button prompts with very loose/no time component attached to it.
    18:35 - the auto action button also applies to some gameplay QTEs, like the train in Leon's campaign
    23:18 - they just copied RE5's button prompts -- interact button for doors, partner button for level loading doors, dpad for switch to items, Y or triangle for inventory which was separate from the dpad, mix herbs with button prompts in the inventory screen. they also made an auto mix herbs button combo, it was RB + X or R2 + square.
    the inventory system feels slow but in fairness they brought back the same classic item juggling and because of how much flak people had with eggs taking up the same amount of space as a rocket launcher in RE5 they separated weapons slots from inventory space and just copied the XMB cross menu from ps3 because of how much praise it got that generation. this isn't even really a criticism, just an opinion of not liking it (which is fair, i still think it's awful compared to others in the past).
    24:47 - the partner button on partner doors has two additional functions in RE6, hold to see where the partner is from their camera angle, and press repeatedly to call their name which was meant for veteran players who'd played the level to "mentor" new players, which was more applicable due to 4 campaigns.
    25:06 - the interact and pickup buttons were switched from RE4/RE5 to RE6 because often times people would encounter and do the wrong option for item pickups when they meant to melee or go through a door. it's such a nitpicky problem, but would happen when there's a crowd of enemies nearby a door, and eliminating some would cause item pickups to spawn. most of the game's changes from RE5 were based on criticisms found circa RE5, such as not being able to move and shoot, not being able to aim with center of screen instead of a laser pointer, not being able to run while holding the stick all the way down, sprint not being that fast so they added an actual sprint, not being able to switch back and forth lefthanded & righthanded... these all got fixed. i dont think anyone that played RE5 complained about too many buttons for RE6, they complained that it wasn't the Gears of War button control scheme instead... of which, capcom literally lifted half of their RE6 controls from Lost Planet 2 which people loved that control scheme so it really was a catch 22.
    36:55 - the color banding is due to targeting 360/PS3 consoles in the initial release, where the colorbanding wasnt immediately noticeable because both consoles black levels and gamma correction were inconsistent. they authored the game in non-linear color, where gamma correction ends up getting applied more than once thereby causing the game to look very washed out/dark, and that resulted in most of the game's nighttime or dark sections being completely unplayable, requiring a third brightness filter (the one in the settings) so you could actually see in the dark.

    • @TFSned
      @TFSned 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really good technical analysis. It's a shame Capcom didn't keep the source textures and use them for the PC/next-gen ports, but it's still a great looking game if you can overlook that.
      I think RE6 uses PBR textures, which use more VRAM but reflect light more accurately and allows the game to have much better lighting and contrast. RE5 looks very drab and washed out unless you disable the filter on the PC version. RE6 also uses deferred rendering so having multiple light sources is more efficient, while RE5 is usually just 1 dynamic light source (the sun) along with pre-baked lighting.
      It also seems to stream level data in rather than having areas separated by loading screens. Online co-op is also seamless instead of requiring you to reach the next checkpoint or reload the current one to let someone join.
      Basically, RE6 is Uncharted with full game co-op and split-screen, actual enemy variety and depth to the combat system. I like Uncharted enough to have played all the games, but they fall apart on the higher difficulties and could never have a ranking system like RE6 because of all the trial and error involved.

    • @natayaway
      @natayaway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TFSned RE6 is a pretty game, but it's definitely not PBR. modders have been able to reverse engineer some shader effects using RE5's shaders as a base. capcom did improve upon RE5's shaders for RE6 by way of making it a layered shader system, where you could put another shader on top of the existing one. the layered shaders were pretty much exclusive to playable characters (and bosses) though. all characters and enemies used a diffuse and normal channel, specular map, and a light catch fresnel. playable characters had a sequential dirt shader layered on top depending on which chapter which would also affect the specular map, and a "blend" shader that added specularity any time a character got wet (im pretty sure it's a phong shader) that would procedurally blend in and out over time. but it wasn't PBR, everything was driven by raster image texture files.
      they never bothered to implement PBR for MT framework because it was reaching end of life with the upcoming console generation. the last 3 games of that generation that used MT framework were revelations 1 for 3ds, mercenaries 3d for 3ds, RE6 for 360/PS3/PC. and then revelations 2 (and the port for rev1) was a crossgen title that actually reverted back to the RE5 shaders without some of the fancy layering, probably because of their episodic production schedule. and by then, they were knee deep in RE engine development.
      another dead giveaway that it's not PBR, you need linear color source textures before any color transforms to get photoreal. the game's files are a mess of various non-linear color elements shuffled together.

    6 gets a bad rep when really it was just too much for people to handle. Capcom basically gave us 4 games in one all with complete stories and yet fans complain about gameplay. We get a Re4 gameplay style with Leon's/Helena's story, a RE5 with Chris/Piers and a hybrid of both with Sherry/Jake's plus a bonus Ada which was unique and held up on it's own. I have been saying this since it first was released stop the RE6 slander it's an underrated gem.

  • @TheTopgeartony
    @TheTopgeartony 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    I think RE6 is a good game and a logical escalation of what 4 and 5 were leading to. The backlash made Capcom go back to base (kinda) with 7 but after 8 we're already seeing that escalation again so 9 might be another bombastic affair.
    As for gameplay I think 6 is fun but the constant interruptions with cutscenes, camera shifts taking control away from you (while enemies can still hit you) and QTEs every 5 or so minutes is what really drags it down. I legit think if the game respected the players intelligence more by not showing you every point of interest in an area with the character going "I wonder how we get out of this one" or it didn't need to shove a set piece down your throat every other room it'd have been received better because people would have been able to actually play the combat portion of the game more with less interruption.
    I think the new direction they took with 7 has retroactively helped 6 in many ways. Now that it's no longer the flagship posterchild for where the series is heading and is seen more as this really dumb entry in a very eclectic series people look back on it far more fondly. Sadly we'll probably never see another like it that maybe tries to address the issues 6 had. Capcom were going with a dual approach once with Revelations filling in for the classic action-y 3rd person RE games but because of how much Revelations 2 sucked and how they completely borked it's release that idea died with that entry
    Now we have the remakes and they're 50-50 so far with 2 being really good (when it's being classic RE and not a terrible 3rd person action game with awful boss fights) and 3 feeling like a really soulless cashgrab. I'm dreading the rumoured remake of 4 honestly, gonna lose all that cheesy charm imo.
    As an aside I did the hardest difficulty on the 360 version which is not ideal. Not only was the game obviously not tested at that difficulty (you can actually die when the camera is taken away from you to show you points of interest if enemies are still around you) but that performance, it's telling because I breezed through it much easier on the same difficulty on the PS4 version.

      Also, I even think REmake3 is great! Its just insanely short for a full price game. What's there is good. It's just that a 5 hour campaign only works for 2 because of it having 4 scenarios to play through. if it had only been Leon A, people would have the same problem.

Every campaign has a grind spot that's amazing to abuse through the easier difficulty settings like normal or amateur.

    Or does the door have to be opened, which can also be the kind of door that requires a partner, putting you in a state where you can't pick up the item because you have to advance to the next area or trigger a cutscene, meaning you'll lose the item anyway?
    While RE6 might have too many key mappings, mapping too many functions to a button can have that kind of situation, too

    I play a lot of PC games with a hybrid left hand on a PS4/PS5 controller and right hand on a mouse.
    I use the most recent version of DS4windows. It allows you to remap every input to a keyboard or mouse command instead. Customization includes changing the PS button's function, the dual sense mute button's function, the touch pad left click, touch pad right click, and inputs for touchpad swipes up, down, left, and right. There's also an option to hide the controller from the OS. It's worked for me in games that usually allow for only one active input at a time.

    From what I've seen, it seems like the first 3 RE games, Zero, the GameCube remake, & Code Veronica are all (more or less) in that original, pre-rendered camera, 3rd-person, slow-burn style. Games 4, 5, & 6 & spinoffs like Operation Racoon City are in their own cheesy, action-movie style focused around setpieces (and there are hints of this in earlier games - the way you were encouraged at certain points to use more ammo in 2 & 3, the opening cutscene to Code Veronica, the self-aware (?) ridiculousness of the original trilogy's setups & villains, etc). Revelations & its sequel, as well as the remakes of 2 & 3, meld the earlier titles' inventory management, slower pacing, & emphasis on exploration with the setpiece focus of the action titles, along with a return to the 3rd-person camera; & finally, RE's 7 & 8 take all of those elements, add a first-person camera, lean more heavily into subgenres like psychological horror, & (in 8) mess with a hub & branch model similar to RE 4.

    Ever since around Devil May Cry 4, Capcom seems to have concentrated their development as PC first, that's why the PC version is the best one and it released the same year as the PS3 and 360 versions. Even then, the game was very well optimized and considering the really good graphics for the time (save for the low poly textures you mentioned) and it ran on mid-range PCs. I remember actually, the hating reviews still mentioned the PC version being a great port and possibly the best version.
    7 and 8 are the same, 8 having the DRM issue at the beginning but was quickly updated and it still will run better than on PS5 and Series X, because it has the potential to run at 144 fps or more (if your gpu and monitor can handle it of course).

    Glad you acknowledged RE6's story. While also not my favorite, I find it objectively better written than the western entries (RE3:R, RE7, and RE8). The scenario and tone of RE6 have a clear objective, that being a larger than life '90s Hollywood action film with zombies, with extra DNA cribbed from John Woo's western films like Face/ Off. The characters are all consistent with their depictions in earlier games, and the sincerity of the game's theme is completely lost in RE3:R and RE8. I really like the way Japanese writers continue to depict earnest heroes while establishing stakes and people worth saving. I got the impression in the western games that people who would rather be writing for films were using their gigs to shove out whatever script they had already cooking, appropriating the characters to tell their own story, rather than honoring or continuing what came before. And don't even get me started on the inconsistencies of the western titles, particularly with tone and plot. RE6 was truly a "we didn't know how good we had it" type of game in terms of story.

    • @saloz9483
      @saloz9483 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea that's a hard disagree on RE3R. I'm guessing your one of those people who had a problem with Jill. Jill is my favorite character in the series and I felt they did her just fine in the remake. In fact I felt most of the characters were served better in the Remake. Just look at Tyrell who had no real character or even presence in the original. In the remake he was an actual character.

      @@saloz9483 Jill, but primarily that game's tone. Have you played it recently? There are so many inconsistencies most people don't even recognize, I wonder if the hype and presentation blinded people to the actual content. It seems like that game was the victim of a western writing room without an authoritative voice to reign things in. The Japanese games typically only have one or two writers.

      I actually would have to agree on this. I think the games from 7 onward feel really tonally confused in terms of writing, with RE3 in particular feeling like a breathless self parody that surpassed 6's excess.

    • @parissmith5727
      @parissmith5727 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattmedrala1947 That's what I thought too. Village has what I call "Netflix Originals" syndrome, and RE7 (which I think was the best of the western games), at least establishes a consistent theme and sticks with it, though it doesn't withstand a minute's scrutiny. I could go on and on about the lack of a central vision in RE3:R, and I notice how bad it is because it's the only western RE that's also a remake. I have a theory that one of the script supervisors wasn't even alive in 1998.

    Out of ammo thing is not players' fault. Anyone familiar with the survivor aspect of the genre knows that ammo conservation is one of the key elements. You can't just ammo dump without consequences. But the players who are new to the series don't know that. The way Capcom represents the game is where this confusion begins. Constant running, shooting, Hollywood action, explosions make the player think that this is one of "those" games where shooting is the main element and ammo is abundant. So they start blasting.. for a short amount of time.

    The controls are so fun and give you so much freedom, that RE6 might be my favorite Mercenaries game ever made, and with PC mods + the L4D extra enemy pack... it's even better. There's even a PC mod to allow you to play it up to 4-6 players in Mercs as opposed to just 2, it's by making the room think it's a Survivors mode room by switching while everyone's in the room or something along those lines... it's been a while since I've done it.
    Kinda sad they limited movement a bit in Rev2, but still a very enjoyable experience with a fun Raid mode which definitely adds more to what Rev1 already added with its first attempt at this new game mode.

    I’ve heard a lot of things said about RE6….. but I’ve never heard someone say “Maybe it was too good looking for the hardware it was released on”…. The reason everything is pitch black and not shadowed is to hide all the subpar near late ps2/early ps3 textures. I agree the playable character models look phenomenal especially for their time and hell even today, but everything else is an EXTREME step down from what was presented in RE5. Just look at the npcs….. I like the damage enemies could take, but the cost of that was very basic enemy models. The majini in 5 were at the time the most detailed mob enemy of the series and I’d argue they still hold up. You could see the sweat glisten on those guys. I think 6 both deservedly and undeservedly gets its reputation. Aside from the Dino fight and the first chapter once you get to the university, Leon’s campaign is a snooze fest that doesn’t know what kind of game it wants to be. This is multiplied by 10 for Ada, it hurts the campaign even more because hers barely had a story and was suppose to be the finale that tied everything together…. Chris and Jake (half of his campaign anyways) are the only ones that knew what they were doing and went for it. It’s a solid 3.5/5 propped up mainly by the mechanics, mercenaries and Chris.

    People that run out of ammo while playing Resident Evil 6 are just playing it wrong. It’s a simple as that. They’re not using the games new melee system, they’re probably using the context melee system (which has slightly changed from the previous two games) even less than they did in Resident Evil 4 and 5, and they’re probably trying to play the game as a cover shooter a lot of the time... which like Vanquish before it you really aren’t meant to do despite the cover system being there.
    When I first played Resident Evil 6, there was a point with Chris where I was getting pretty low on ammo, I realized I was playing the game wrong, and I never even kind of had ammo problems after that. Funnily the only other time in a Resident Evil game where I had ammo problems was when I played the original as Chris and after a bit was like: Oh, this is now how you’re meant to play this game. Although I got better with the knife in that old Sega Saturn game than in any RE game since.

    I believe that calling the 7th generation of consoles a "stumbling" point to be a generally ignorant take since those consoles essentially were what gaming would be like going forward. Online capabilities from the start, wireless controllers, multimedia functionality, a digital storefront. Not much has really changed from 7th gen to current gen, the hardware just gets better but what they are fundamentally able to do is still the same. My biggest gripe was that the generation lasted too long. These consoles were still getting new games released for them into 2014 when they were already showing their age by the beginning of 2011. If you formed your argument around this then it'd be understandable since this console generation lasted longer than any other before it which created the sentiment that everything on these machines ran poorly when that wasn't the case for the first half of support (at least on the Xbox 360 side of things).

    I personally don't think gaming outlets caused the backlash on this one. There were many RE fans like myself and some of my friends that were kind of pissed at the time that it was like a michael bay film. RE5 was already too much action, the trailer for 6 had real zombies so we thought it was going to be back to horror but instead felt like a huge middle finger.
    I still had lots of fun even though it dragged at some points. I'd give it an 8/10 as a game but the fans were mostly pissed even if they didn't see the reviews.

    you didn't installed the patch to fix the character being so close to the camera- If you install it it'd be pretty much like a RE4 engine on steroids. The same thing happens in RE5 (character is too close to the screen) without the patch it becomes an obstacle with such a fast paced action gameplay.

    I think the reason RE 6 received so much hate (including me), it's because it is everything but a Resident Evil game, I imagine the fan base was getting tired of the IP going from 'Horror' to Gun-Fu.
    In retrospective, I think the game would had been received better if it was a new IP, or anything that isn't a supposed Horror IP
    But I do agree with your counter-points, business, like everyone else, can pseudo-predict the demand of a market, with the info available. If literally everyone buys you apples, why would start to make oranges?

    Btw why is the switch version being rendered at 1080p? I thought the screen on those things are only 720p.

    This game definitely feels like a product of it’s time and just the push for each successive game to be ‘more’. One thing I will say that I totally agree with that really soured me on this when it came out was the controls. They are very strange and clunky, and I had a lot of trouble with some of the repeated button press events. Honest to god, there was a scene near the end I believe where you had to climb a rope or something and I couldn’t get it to work right. It should have been the simplest thing to do and I sat there for 10 minutes trying to climb a rope and the button prompts were ridiculous and not registering right or something. I’ve wanted to play through this one again tho as I haven’t since the original and I’m sure there are some good things in it I’ve forgotten about. Nice coverage here

    I never knew we could dual wield two handguns even the official strategy guide I bought day one made no mention about it, went years thinking it was just a cool trailer detail

    Dude, when you were talking about being sick and mentioned razor blades in your throat, I imagined it and reflexively cleared my throat....then you mentioned if anyone cleared their throat on your account. You're fucking awesome man LMAO!

    Resident Evil as a title means more to me then the gameplay style of the originals. Resident Evil is really a story of bioterrorism and following a group of characters through time. So I’m really lenient with the changes of gameplay style. Also I feel like RE4 is closer to the old trilogy then it is to 6. Most of 4 is take controls with a 3rd person camera. It’s got more involved combat but still has Some survival horror in it.

    I know you did a video with Mayo and Sphere Hunter, but are you gonna do a retrospective for the abomination that is the new RE movie?

    As someone who has played RE since 3, I gotta say 6 is one of my favorites besides 3. It's so over the top and campy and actually a blast. The different campaigns and gameplay was pre gud. I've never had an issue with how different it is.
    Visually it still holds up (there are some textures which look stupidly blurry but overall aesthetics and detail are pleasing (minus that mineshaft section).

    Bodyslamming, Suplexing, and Dropkicking zombies and J'avos was fun. Shame Capcom didn't make more use of this perfect asskicking combat. ORC + RE6 Combat, I still think of what could have been.

    I've always enjoyed resident evil 6 it was fun end really cool to play in multiplayer. I had wished for something closer to the earlier games in the series but also knew at the time this was the direction the majority of people playing the series were pushing for. It was the knee jerk reaction, however that allowed us to hit the reset button and move on to more horror centric stuff found in Resident evil 7.

    I loved it when it came out and I still love it to this day. It's one of the most fun Co Op games I have ever played.

    Agreed. I didn't love RE6 because of its issues, but I absolutely still had a blast playing it with a friend.I wish more games had its gameplay. Being able to shoot, slide and then kick zombies in the face should be in more video games. I feel like if this would've been called anything else other than RE, it would've at gotten more 8s and wouldn't have garner all the hate it gets.
