I'm sorry this comment is so long: Mr Crilley, when you put the two faces side by side, my mind was practically blown! This video reminded me of a tutorial of yours I watched years ago- 'How to draw manga eyes: Male vs Female.' Of course, the eight-year-old me attempted to copy it for a "battle" scene (in the violent sport of rock, paper, scissors) for one of my comics! I had discovered your videos; and from then onwards watched them and I am now hooked onto manga! You're a great teacher! I'm still young, but I hope I will grow up to be like you and other great artists out there! I'm sure other viewers of yours think the same! Thanks for being awesome ^-^
Meaghan Eruless The Security Guard We know Manga, what it is and how to draw it. A million people draw it, teachers want you to became an original artist. Develop your OWN style, not copy others.
Thank you for these video tutorials, it's a nice surprise to find an illustrator giving help to the community beyond their books. Your tips helped me see that some of my instinct drawings got some things right about male faces vs. female faces. Watching your videos is like having a mentor to guide through drawing and writing. Thanks again (and I will be picking up your books in the future soon!)
Blushies! I love it when male characters have blushies! ^o^ Also thank you for being so cognizant of what's considered "feminine" and "masculine", i.e. that these are conventions used by illustrators. It's refreshing to hear a point of view that doesn't assume these traits as givens.
markcrilley, I must thank you. You are my boss lol. But like, I'm recommending you every time somebody appreciate my drawings (I draw while in class :/) Your point-perspective videos are the ones I pay the most attention because of the magic of building things in two dimensions XD, and the narrative in the tutorials is just great for following up your demonstrations while fishing some good tips! I feel I have all the things I need to learn in your channel. Sincere thumbs up!
He said something about artist tend to try and make male and female look different by exaggerating features, but I ended up laughing thinking, I watch way to much anime where you literally have to think for a little bit before you can decide what gender some characters are..
I know what you mean, but maybe he was referring a little more to older manga types. Just watched another video of his and I noticed that the male faces (prominently the eyes) had many sharper lines than the female faces. I noticed that a lot of the styles are from older Japanese animations, not the normal typical anime they've got now.
yea if you were to draw feminine lips on a male it'll look weird and also it can tell the gender as well as the eyes( bigger eyes female. smaller\longer make)
Can you teach how to draw a curly hair? I have this character of mine and I want him to have curly hair but just don't know how to do it. Like can.you shoe different tipes of curly hair, like really curly, a little curly, short curly, long curly (not too long, not even reaching the shoulders)
Heya, Mark! I got in on your how to's and stuff a little less than a year ago, and I got glued to you! You make things so detailed, and seeing the process makes me think "Wow, how come I've never been able to do something this easy?" So I'd just like to say, thank you for being such a helpful influence on my art skills, and thank you for being awesome! Your Mastering Manga 1 book is amazing by the way =). Have a great day!!
This vid definitely helped me to see key differences in the male and female faces. The only thing i wouldn't change is the contour of the face. I like that smooth look that it has but i can see why you changed it the way you did.
+Andrew D. Usually, I've discovered that when you draw eyes facing directly forward, they're going to look at bit cross-eyed. The catch is that you have to make it subtle enough to look not actually cross-eyed. One thing I do when I have trouble drawing eyes is to make very light guide-lines from the irises to the object/direction they're looking at. Since eyes are apart but they're both looking at one thing, it should generally make a triangle, and the triangle will get bigger the further the object is from the face. I hope that helps!
Mark,i have been with you since the very start.i remember reading Akiko at my school library that was a GOOD time then Miki Falls came out and loved every moment of it.and then Brodys Ghost came out and i am looking forward to your future Mangas/books.many times i have gotten discouraged then i watch your videos... it incouraged me to keep trying and not give up.you've helped me countless times thank you Mark, thank you.
It's really good that there is someone, good in art, that can explain everything we need so simply ading some sence of humor of course!! If someday i have a trip to America i will defenitly buy these books!!
could you please do a video on realistic steampunk drawings? and i love your videos, i found you because my art teacher at school has used a couple of your time lapse videos to teach us.
wow, I am so impressed by your efficiency. you don't ever seem to put a stroke out of line. I mean, I'm confident I could produce something of a similar standard but thats after a lot of touching up. making sure the eyes are balanced, the ears are in the right place the necks the appropriate size etc. you seem to knock it out of the park on the first try. amazing.
This is so awesome! I've actually just thought that it's a fantastic way to draw identical twin characters :D I didn't draw this as you did because it's 01:41am and I should really be sleeping but I'm not, but I will certainly be trying something like this sometime soon x3
I love your channel! :D For me, it's not so much about whether the character is a male or female, but about how each individual character is built. It's cool to see other artist's style however, and this video is pretty interesting. :3
I love you! This is just what I needed. It's amazing to see the transformation, and good call on keeping the hair the same. It helps keep the focus on structure. I always love the blushies.
This was so great. I haven't watched Mark Crilley in a long time now and it was like visiting an old friend. Your videos have helped me so much over the years and I've really improved as an artist. Thanks for everything, Mark
I just bought your book, Mastering Manga, and I'm finding it very helpful so far. I'm just starting out as an artist so watching your step by step videos is very inspirational for me as well, keep up the great work.

Christine Wang but who knows!! fans might've confirmed this and i could be wrong. Or Hanji is indeed a non-binary character, like Hideyoshi, Crona, and many more!!
This is the most helpful video you've done in awhile, and the idea was very creative. You should try making a video from start to finish on how to draw a comic book page, maybe one from your next Brody's Ghost book, to go along with your manga-making series of videos

Male character already started looking like a male character right after you drew the first eye. You could've changed just the eyes, and it would've been a believable male character, albeit slightly feminine.
Jonét Harry ikr! I just made the ends of the jaws a bit masculine ish (not so masculine that it looks more abstract than something Pablo Picasso painted, and definitely not as masculine as the one on Mark's video)
Hey hi crilley, just wanted to tell ya great video you did here today The male vs female is pretty good comparison between the two its like you drew the husband and wife because they look great together these characters. And keep it up inspiring your viewers an teaching us your ways Sensei because that's what you are to others a great art teacher ^-^
Awesome tutorial and video. You are literally one of my top three artist idols. Jim Lee, David Finch, then you and also Robert Marzullo. Well that makes four, lol.
love your lines and how easy you make it look to add the details in the females eyes. it was just an empty socket , then *poof* pretty eyes! love your videos!
Historically, males and females both actually had long hair generally, especially those of the upper class. Cutting your hair at all was considered taboo in a way, and only the poor did it, that is, if they could afford the tools. And then they had a really messed up looking haircut, because they did it themselves with old shears. Of course, this is just a generalization, but. . . . On a side note, I tend to draw a lot of long-haired male characters. I don't know why, but I just love the look of it.
It depends on when and where, but yes, that happened at one time too. Although, I'm not so sure about the shaving of their heads part. I know that during a part of the Renaissance, people wore wigs powdered with mercury to kill lice, but that didn't mean they shaved their heads. (The unfortunate side effect, of course, was that their hair could often fall out from mercury poisoning.)
Thanks for making so many great videos, Mark Crilley! I never thought I could ever become an artist without your videos! They have really boosted my confidence and have helped me to find out what I want to be! :D Thank you so much! :D
When I make a manga, I want a character who either looks like a girl, is mistaken for a girl, but is actually a boy, or a character who looks like a boy, is mistaken for a boy, but is actually a girl.
Mark, your video's are always enlightening, whether I'm drawing along with you or not. These tips will help me with my biggest problem being very unisex looking characters. I'm also planning on buying the Brody's Ghost series due to how often you reference it. It look like an amazing series.
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for all the the videos you made because they really helped me to get better at drawing! You are my inspiration and I hope that one day I can draw as well as you :)
Another fascinating tutorial! Thanks, Mark! :0) Looking through the comments, I noticed what NICE people watch your lessons! Everybody is supportive and helpful to one another! Where someone has suggested a topic for your next video, which has been done before, unbeknownst to them, either you give them a link to your previous video on that subject or one of your KIND subscribers does. So cool! Way to go, CRILLEY Subs!!!
Yeah, i absolutely love that too. Happy there is a little love between all the hatred on YT!(i must say im having a great time like this on DeviantArt too!)
Fascinating, and very helpful. What I found interesting is that when you started the changes I saw the face change from young boy to adult, which suggests to me that young girls and young boys would be pretty similar stylistically.
markcrilley I believe you already have said something about this in one of your videos, but I can't find which one. :/ I'v been really getting into my drawing lately, and I have been thinking about going somewhere with it, but I'm still in high school. I enjoy the manga/anime style. Any advice?
Lovely art as always, Mark. But I gotta say, I've noticed that your music composition skills have vastly improved over the years as well. Very nice. ^_^
Can you show us how to make watercolour backgrounds of scenery if you haven't already? Where it simulates an out of focus background in photos. Those are great.
I've drawn a full body and split it down the center and made one side a man and the other side a woman! It was very interesting to see the difference in bone structure, muscle mass, and proportion. I'd love to see you do a video like that Please!!! I don't think I could bring myself to erase a drawing like that…Oh, Everything you do for us Mark! All in the name of Learning!!! Thanks Mark!
Mark, can you do a video about how to draw eyes, looking in the different points (up, down to the left or right, on the viewer)? Or maybe do it like a challenge: make a few couple of eyes (faces) looking at each other (for example, 4 faces, each in one quarter of paper sheet,1 looking at 2, 2 at 3, 3 at 4, and 4 at 1).
Thanks for this! I love to draw, but I'm not very good at it (besides lightsabers and axes). These videos help me so much when I'm trying to draw my many OCs or me and my friends as different fictional characters! Though you are not the only artist I watch, you are still an excellent teacher!
Another great video, and as usual, it's really helpful :) Thank you Mr. Crilley! I hope that in a future video you can also talk a little about composition.
hahaha awww the "blushies" make them both so cute! Great job on the video as well, definitely helped me out a lot!! I really struggled with drawing males..they always looked too feminine for my tastes...now I know why! Thanks again~!
Hey Mark, thanks once again for a great vid :) I was just wondering if you had any plans to do a video outlining the steps you take when doing a sketch, like for example those in your 'comparing yourself to other artists' video. They really stuck me as stunning, and would love any tips/tricks or info on how to better my own sketches, also many thanks for all the great videos :)
Does anyone else not draw the little sketch lines to shape the face cause I don't and it turns out fine plus the lines they bug me to be not fully rubbed out :)
Male character's jaw line could cut diamonds.
XXXDDD
LAWL!! 😂
IKR 😉
TOTALLY
oh boi thats a good one
Mark: makes a perfect circle in 10 seconds
Me: makes a perfect circle in 10 minutes
I cant even make a perfect circle
XD
XxIPukeRainbowzzxX I use a cup.. But shh!
XxIPukeRainbowzzxX Me:Doesn't even make a circle
Me:Can draw a cube instead,a 3D cube without any ruler ._.

How are you now?)
Wish my art teachers actually knew how to draw Manga... Much less KNEW what Manga WAS..... Stay awesome, Mark. You've helped me draw so much.

It's a cultural thing nowadays
I personally believe, as an artist, the lips play one of the most prominent roles in the transformation of a man to a woman.

Eyes are EVIL

markcrilley How do you free hand those circles man they are awesome. And almost just about perfect. I can't even do a circle like that.
markcrilley They look like brother and sister now. Way to go on that one lol.
My dad and I are both artists, and I love your videos. They are much better than anyone else's. Just keep doing what you're doing, because you rock.

All thanks to YOU, I've gotten so much better at drawing fan art and making my OWN anime characters!!! Thanks a bunch! Keep it up!
This is so awesome! I've actually just thought that it's a fantastic way to draw identical twin characters :D I didn't draw this as you did because it's 01:41am and I should really be sleeping but I'm not, but I will certainly be trying something like this sometime soon x3
Truly great idea and very clear instructions indicating the differences between the female and male face.
Thank you Mark.

Thanks Mark!!! I asked this question so many times, its nice to know that you listen to your fans. Great video.
You've always been a big help for me over the years :D
This was so great. I haven't watched Mark Crilley in a long time now and it was like visiting an old friend. Your videos have helped me so much over the years and I've really improved as an artist. Thanks for everything, Mark
while he was drawing the Male face I was like " the mouth, the mouth" then he finally fixed it, and I felt pleased...
I just bought your book, Mastering Manga, and I'm finding it very helpful so far. I'm just starting out as an artist so watching your step by step videos is very inspirational for me as well, keep up the great work.
Andrew Teichroeb Thanks Andrew!
I will try to get your books too!
Thank you Aditya! :)
I enjoyed watching carefully each stroked you made. ..thank you. I learned a lot though !
Although this is really late. There are some manga artists that make their character(s) look both male and female and let the readers decide what the gender is. A good example of this is Hanji/Hange Zoe from Attack on Titan (manga not the anime)
+Andrew D. not to forget crona from soul eater. (who is ambiguous in both manga and anime)
But Hanji Zoe is a girl in attack on titan, both manga and anime.
Even though Hanji is voiced by a female VA in the anime, the writer himself, Isayama-sensei, does not want to confirm Hanji's gender. Thus making us free to decide whether Hanji is a male or a female.
Can you do an anime version of Eren Yeager and his Titan Form from Attack On Titan?
He already did Eren Yeager.
ImFrelled Yes, he did. But the drawing he did was actually closer to the manga's art style, which is actually VERY different from the anime's art style. Maybe for a Message to Subscribers video?
I just don't think there's any reason to ask him to repeat himself. Perhaps someone else from the same anime. Misaka? Is that her name?
ImFrelled Mikasa. And yeah, that'd be cool. :D
I see, I transposed the k & s. Some day I just may get Japanese spellings right.
Your videos are getting progressively longer Mark.... I like it!
I can never seem to get guide lines right they're always either to curved or to straight
Great video Mark! This was so helpful. Gotta love the blushies as well lol!
Mark, can you do a video to explain how to do two eyeballs look symmetrical or have you already done one?
Draw the eyes at the same time and not make one eye hyper-detailed before you even outline the second eye
markcrilley Very helpful tips, Thanks again for all your amazing how to draw videos!
when i saw him finsh the Jaw i was like dang boy when was the last time you had a meal
lol 😉
Ah the Blushies!, that's your one liner there Mark. I love the instructor feel and commonalities in your tutorials, you and Jazza should do a comparison video or a collab video that'd be very informative.
Here's the collab I did with Jazza and Baylee Jae: th-cam.com/video/meIdXLwPJ08/w-d-xo.html
Jonét Harry yeah, I always give my female characters eyelashes, surprisingly effective.
Thanks Mark this is awesome- also as an added bonus at 21:12 they look like brother and sister.
Hey hi crilley, just wanted to tell ya great video you did here today
The male vs female is pretty good comparison between the two its like you drew the husband and wife because they look great together these characters. And keep it up inspiring your viewers an teaching us your ways
Sensei because that's what you are to others a great art teacher ^-^
monica rios Thanks Monica!
Your welcome sensei!
Im very inspired to make my own comic book ..thank you very much!!
Has he drawn someone crying?
That would be interesting!
By crying, do you mean a sad face with tears or sobbing beyond control?
Either or
shinypear326 He's done a video on sad-face crying, but uncontrollable sobbing would be a very interesting video. :D
Yeah, that feel-good cry. Exercise your tear muscles.
Awesome tutorial and video. You are literally one of my top three artist idols. Jim Lee, David Finch, then you and also Robert Marzullo. Well that makes four, lol.
Thank you Mark! You are awesome
+Kamila Helena M.M Thank you Kamila!
love your lines and how easy you make it look to add the details in the females eyes. it was just an empty socket , then *poof* pretty eyes! love your videos!

On a side note, I tend to draw a lot of long-haired male characters. I don't know why, but I just love the look of it.
Actually, historically the wealthy shaved their heads and wore wigs. This prevented infestations of head lice, and other critters.

WOAH!!! For whatever reason, I stopped watching your vids and I forgot how much I LOVE THEM!!!!! Lol good to see you again! :D
As far as females having thinner eyebrows, I have two words for you, Mark: Kiryuin Satsuki
Can you teach how to draw curly hair? I have this character of mine and I want him to have curly hair but don't know how to draw it
Long lost brother and sister?
Thanks for making so many great videos, Mark Crilley! I never thought I could ever become an artist without your videos! They have really boosted my confidence and have helped me to find out what I want to be! :D
Thank you so much! :D
Savannah Ruth Thanks Savannah!
the dude looks like he saw a ghost and didnt eat for 3 years
ahaha the blushies XD So cute! good video, helped me a lot, thanks! You laid it out very creatively :)
And can you please draw a ninja? Or a dragon (if you haven't done that before)? Oh, and I almost forgot: You're awesome ;)
1. He has done dragons before, both full-body and just a head.
2. On that note: Yes, he is awesome.
Ikechi Ogbuagu Thanks. Then I guess I'll start searching for the video :3
i .candy When you mentioned it, I do remember seeing that one, BUT that one was adorable and cute, not "He-can-kill-you-in-your-sleep"-cool :3
Thank you for another vital video...those blushies worked out quite well :)
When I make a manga, I want a character who either looks like a girl, is mistaken for a girl, but is actually a boy, or a character who looks like a boy, is mistaken for a boy, but is actually a girl.
Me too. I like that look of somewhere in between. ( ^ω^)
Yep!
what was that desc about?????Didn't get a word of it......
XD
Huh?
Great video Mark! The way you challenge yourself gives us more insight on how you work, and inspires us to keep challenging ourselves. Thanks!
Renee Collins Thanks Renee!
Thicker eyebrows on male characters? I blame fist of the North Star
I blame Heihachi
Shive
oh yeah him too, especially in the animated movie
I blame Erwin Smith from attack on titan
I blame all the saiyans
I blame society and tweezers.
Mark, your video's are always enlightening, whether I'm drawing along with you or not. These tips will help me with my biggest problem being very unisex looking characters. I'm also planning on buying the Brody's Ghost series due to how often you reference it. It look like an amazing series.
The character he drew is basically transgender
This is amazing! I couldn't learn how to draw male better! And he's so funny at the same time. I love the videos!! Thx :)
You know your a fail when you can't even draw the circle.
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for all the the videos you made because they really helped me to get better at drawing! You are my inspiration and I hope that one day I can draw as well as you :)
Gender bend versions

No way of describing how awesome this is, thankyou Mr. Crilley, ive been watching Ur vids or over 2 years now! U deserve more subs!!
This technique would work great if you're trying to draw a brother and sister character or maybe fraternal twins. I really need to try this
Fascinating, and very helpful. What I found interesting is that when you started the changes I saw the face change from young boy to adult, which suggests to me that young girls and young boys would be pretty similar stylistically.
You have a beautiful talent Mark, congratulations!
Have you done a tutorial on drawing perfect circles? Because I have seriously no clue how you do it ..
It amazes me how quickly you can draw the face, I lack confidence when drawing and hesitate, making my drawings look patchy and inconsistent.
markcrilley I believe you already have said something about this in one of your videos, but I can't find which one. :/
I'v been really getting into my drawing lately, and I have been thinking about going somewhere with it, but I'm still in high school. I enjoy the manga/anime style.
Any advice?
Best way to start my Saturday :) Thanks Mark!!
Lovely art as always, Mark. But I gotta say, I've noticed that your music composition skills have vastly improved over the years as well. Very nice. ^_^
Windofscarblade Thanks so much!
markcrilley No problem. :D
Can you show us how to make watercolour backgrounds of scenery if you haven't already? Where it simulates an out of focus background in photos. Those are great.
this is the 3rd video I watched from you, you sir just got yourself another subscriber
ToasterBrains Thank you so much :)
Thanks so much for this! I've been struggling with making my make characters more masculine for a while now. Can't wait to give your tips a try!
Thanks Mark!
well this video was awesome. I love those formats and you help me everytime i watch one of your vids
Could you do a tutorial on how you film your videos?
Thanks for this! I love to draw, but I'm not very good at it (besides lightsabers and axes). These videos help me so much when I'm trying to draw my many OCs or me and my friends as different fictional characters! Though you are not the only artist I watch, you are still an excellent teacher!
Another great video, and as usual, it's really helpful :)
Thank you Mr. Crilley!
I hope that in a future video you can also talk a little about composition.

Thank you very much :D
Awesome tutorial! Also it really helps me draw more feminine female faces, hahaha!
Thank you!
hahaha awww the "blushies" make them both so cute!
They really stuck me as stunning, and would love any tips/tricks or info on how to better my own sketches, also many thanks for all the great videos :)
you helped me learn the male and female details and I think you are a good artist
mark can you teach us how to draw body poses
Does anyone else not draw the little sketch lines to shape the face cause I don't and it turns out fine plus the lines they bug me to be not fully rubbed out :)
