She didn't strugle
Her voice unfortunately wasn't loud enough/strong enough (sounded better previously on the radio). I just knew we wouldn't do well after hearing this.
It should have better background vocals. The producers were a bit naive.
Mix came off all wrong. Couldn't believe the host could have got it so wrong.

Mae is a woman that says that she hates the Britain. She is a traitor. Now she is applying for a German passport to live in Spain, hope that this witch never comes back.
They did , so much more than everyone else but apparently her rehearsals were terrible and this was the best performance that she gave
She has the worst voice. An absolute clownshow of a so-called vocalist. Off-key, weak, out of tune, unable to handle the end of phrases in particular. unable to project her voice. If she'd had to compete for it, she'd have been bottom-ranked and ejected in the semis. Instead we got to listen to her absolute pisstake of a performance alongside powerhouse young singers like Alessandra, who btw also has ten times the charisma of 'Mae'. Every single other singer in the whole event was a vastly superior vocalist.
I don't think it's the mic, her voice isn't that strong, would have been better for someone with a stronger voice.

She seems like such a nice girl, the concept and staging was good, but something obviously went wrong sound wise. She didn't deserve all the backlash, it's just ESC, it's supposed to be fun, not a platform for spreading negativity.
Mae always said that they asked her if she wanted to do Eurovision and they were literally like we need a yes or a no now. Maybe they didn't put too much thought into this year. I know in Sweden for example their songs are written specifically for the song contest and they always write solo or collab with an established artist. Seems to have done the Swedes no harm so maybe something similar is needed in the UK rather than just finding a song and hoping it's Eurovision friendly. Surely we all see that Eurovision is a thing unto itself and what may work in the wider world won't necessarily work at eurovision
Her soft vocals sounded fine in the radio version of the song, but she should have adapted her vocals for the Eurovision show. The vocals weren't powerful enough for a live performance.

I really liked the song when it was realesed, but I have to admit that Mae has more to work on to perform on a stage of this magnitude, which of course makes sense. You can see that she has the basics and the song was really good, I wish her only success in the future and I'm sure she will improve a lot!

I completely understand why the BBC didn’t want to win this year as it would mean spending millions to host again, but the fact that the UK has one of the worlds biggest music industries and does this badly so often in Eurovision is a disgrace. We’re not asking to win every year, we just want a song that we can be proud of and entries that consistently finish on the left-hand side of the scoreboard.
Well Eurovision is a for-profit event. So even if they would spend millions on hosting, they'd definitely earn it back immediately, and even in the later years due to increased tourism.
I mean this was a decent song with a fun staging, the vocal performance ruined it.

As soon as I heard this live I just knew we’d have another James Newman flop on our hands. If you compare this to the likes of Israel for example and how much stronger their vocals and performance was in comparison to the UK, I’m really not surprised where we ended up. And then Sam Ryder comes out in the interval and shows EVERYONE up just to add to it.
James Newman has a great voice, just maybe the song wasn't right... But this... It was hard to listen 😅

Regardless, it was generic pop trash. Cant be coming with this forgettable dirge after Sam Ryder showed what it takes to get into top 3 with effortless charm and raw talent and a bit of class and showmanship.
Mae wrote a very catchy pop song that works on the radio, you can't fault that, but her vocals were just not on point enough on the night, especially compared to some of the other contestants. She wasn't loud enough/strong enough. Her vocals got lost in the backing track. Well done Mae, you tried your best I'm sure. It's easy to just sit at home and slag it off.

People are oblivious to how bad their lives really are. They have a medieval system (their government) where important government posts are only open to the elite - who are lazy and illiterate. They have one of the most politically ignorant populations on the planet, followed by an equally illiterate Royal family. I remember talking to a 'so called educated' English guy once who said Christopher Columbus was American. English generally eat badly and live badly. Opening a bottle of wine for dinner - whilst normal in rest of Europe - was considered a treat not long ago (oh dear! ).

man, I and my family got really excited when this song was announced our entry. it's honestly a bop! (even if I prefer my eurovision a bit more... out there.) but then seeing the preview for the live version during the semis, I don't think I've been filled with dread quite so fast by a song. it's a real shame they didn't manage to iron out the bugs in the performance. even though she has some moments to shine, poor mae sounds breathy and wobbly in a way that signals either inability to handle live performances (which seems at odds with what I've heard about other live stuff she's done?) or a nasty illness. plus the sound technicians have done her NO favours, with levels all over the place and a mic that only seems to pick her up half the time.
just all in all such a waste of potential. but ah well, at least we can commiserate with our lifelong bottom-of-the-board buddies germany.

On the radio was a studio recording. Live performance is a different beast - but the whole setup was also dogshit, bad sound mixing, vocals too quiet, music too loud, couldn't hear most of the lyrics.

The bar I was in (not in the UK) went crazy when this song came on. She’s definitely a fan favorite but they really should have helped her out with backing vocals, she’s obviously been struggling performing this live. Some training with breath control would be good for her.
If she requires training and needs help with backing vocals (which she definitely did)...she shouldn't have been there in the first place. The BBC should have looked into her live performances before offering her the gig. We are heading back into the habit of trying to prop up unknown to middle of the road singers to try and gift them a career off the back of Eurovision. It only worked with Sam Ryder because he could actually sing...

I could understand back when the UK public had the last say and picked nonsense like that middle aged man rapping about school etc just for a laugh. This was supposedly selected by people who know what they are doing. The song picked two years ago was even worse than this, I'm starting to think they just got lucky with Sam Ryder.

unpopular opinion: this is a good song! although the live version is a bit quiet, I like the song!
Hi, senior musical analyst here /s
There's a few things to note about this song. Firstly for the song itself, it's perfectly fine for a song that would play on the radio, but in Eurovision, you want to put your best foot forward, and do something unique and special. This just sounds like every generic modern pop song and getting back at my ex song. It's not special, and it doesn't stand out in any way. It also doesn't have a particularly memorable hook or melody like something like Queen of Kings had. It's a perfectly fine song, just not Eurovision material.
Mae's singing is...bad. Her voice just doesn't sound good. It's very bland compared to some of the powerful vocals that other countries had, and it's not particularly pleasing to hear either. Also, most British artists when singing will either put on an American accent, or maintain a British accent, but Mae appears to be doing neither and both at the same time, and the end result is just confusing.
The visuals were basically a circle jerk for Mae, rather than attempting to be an interesting or powerful spectacle. They reeked of corporatised pop culture and came across as very narcissistic. The performance was generally not super interesting either, and Mae herself really didn't do anything interesting in her performance, unlike other songs like Unicorn.
That breakdown was one of the cringiest things I've ever heard. Nothing else to say about that.
Overall, it's baffling how this song was the one that was picked for Eurovision in the first place, and Mae's performance of the song didn't do it any favours. I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason Mae was picked was because of her appearance in Grace Kelly or something, because I genuinely struggle to find a compelling reason why this person and this song were picked to represent the UK in Eurovision.
You mentioned that her voice didn't sound good (and I don't disagree) but I noticed this with a lot of the acts tonight. I got the impression that maybe the monitoring was not up to par as it seemed like a lot of artists were not singing that well. If it was just one or two you could put it down to nerves, but when it was so many, it seems like a technical problem to me.

There's some questions to be asked here. The Vocal mixing is so off compared to other entries. Mae wasn't perfect but it could have been put together a lot better. I absolutely adore this entry and Mae is amazing!

I'm no expert in music but the tune, melody and vibe was good. Certainly puts you in the summer mood... Honestly? It sounds like someone deliberately gave her the wrong microphone. It sounded as if she was singing with no mic. I get her 'street' British accent which was something fresh, it just didnt go well with the shitty mic. Bless her... Selection process needs to be from music judges, not public vote, public votes for any catchy trash (nothing wrong with catchy trash, it's just for the car radio and not good enough for Eurovision) and we see entry after entry that's sub par and just below what's expected of the UK.

It was unsurprising, seeing as the performance was in the UK.
The year after Portugal won in 2017 they hosted and came last, seems to be that the host country never does well after winning or doing well the previous year (solidarity to Ukraine but UK basically won on performance last year i'd argue). That being I don't think the song choice was right for Eurovision and the meaning of the song didn't really come across.

Like so many others have said, most other female acts had a touch of class and professionalism about them. They could actually sing and in some cases dance as well. What annoys me is the UK media, mainly the BBC over hyping this song as though it was a realistic contender to win.......really ??

The audio mixing in this year's contest was terrible! It happened to most of the artists, why were their voices so awfully quiet compared to the instruments and backing vocals. Like here, I don't even think she sung that badly but I could barely hear her! Only in few songs, like Sweden or Albania for example, the singers' voices were as loud as they should've been. The same problem occurred in the semifinals and I'm really shocked they were unable to fix it.
Finally someone who mentions this! Like, I couldn't even *hear* Serbia's singer.

I don't think it's the voice, it's the staging, dancing etc. Honestly this could have been alot better aesthetically. It's something that UK needs to work on. Other than last year I can't think of a time UK has had iconic staging in recent history.
She isn't a good singer, what you hear on the studio version is the power of technology.

I am a recent immigrant in the UK but I felt like as if the UK was my home country. It was so sad to see Mae taking such a low place. The singing was not great, but the song itself is very catchy and deserved much better.
But overall the show was great, I really liked the UK as a host country and felt proud to be a part of this country nowadays

Sam Ryder is a great live performer, Mae Muller is not... The conclusion should be to send another great live performer with a great song not to go back to your past attempts at being "out there because that's what works for Eurovision", no, that's not what works for Eurovision. In the past 20 years you reached top 10, even top 5, at the few times you sent people who can actually perform. Do that.

A part of me actually believes the Eurovision doesn't really shoot for putting out the absolute best of the best, because it becomes unrelatable to an audience who are predominantly enamoured by mediocrity. I think there's a eurovision stigma in the UK music industry, eurovision tends to signal the end of your professional music career in the UK; especially if you don't win.
