  • Note - At 0:25 - we wrote that Sydney ran a time of 41.46 in 2022, which would be amazing but that time at least at the moment is completely impossible. That time should have been written as 51.46 seconds - thanks for understanding.
Nobody has been able to beat Sydney McLaughlin over the previous 2 seasons. Is 2023 the year when that changes?
Thanks to Horta Sorta for the footage!

2:30; Femke who ran her fastest ever 400mH opener of 53.12 in Belgium last Saturday said she was testing out her new 14-step pattern and it went well until the 7th hurdle; “Then it became a mess, but I had a lot of energy left.” Britton Wilson on the same day in Sacramento ran 53.71 (her 4th fastest time) just 30mins AFTER running 49.51 (3rd fastest time) in the flat 400m!🤞Syd, Femke, Britton, Shamier & Dalilah all stay healthy & in-form right through to the WC!

@All In The Game the 14step is a huge factor for Femke. It's pretty ridiculous that she was even capable of being top 10 in the world at her height doing a 15 step. Once she gets adjusted, that should be an easy full second or more off her 400h without getting in better shape.

I would say that any hurdler that has an indoor or outdoor WR in the 400m is a more than viable opponent. It will be an absolute race. Bol in her current form is a much more formidable opponent than Muhammad was when she was in WR form and that is speaking volumes as to how this event has exploded with the top 3 in the last year all doing crazy times. Sydney is definitely the strongest and that shows but just like Wayde Van Niekerk on that special Olympic finals - anything is possible at any of these races.

We’ll have to see. You are probably right, but the gap is not as big as last years WC suggest. I think the gap in the Olympics is probably closer, with both having improved a lot since then. Bol probably has more room for improvement, she is changing to a 14 step like Sydney and her technique is also still not as good as Sydneys.

“Underrated” has become overused. It’s a throwaway line by this time. It typically comes off as a mild diss to the audience, as it says “I, who am really aware and smart, understand how great she is, but you, the huddled masses, don’t rate her highly enough.” Please, pay no mind. It’s part of the social media colloquial dumpster. Here’s the main point: Sydney knows exactly who Femke is, and vice versa. They do not and will not “underrate” each other! 😅

Femke is amazing, but if she improves by a full second (very difficult) she still won’t be challenging Sydney in the 400m hurdles. The open 400 remains to be seen since Sydney hasn’t run one since college, but I have a feeling it will be pretty darn fast. I know it’s good for clicks, but will Britton challenge Femke might be a better debate.

    • @jkf9167
      @jkf9167 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I’m not sure if Sydney will be running the hurdles this year, but if she’s been working on her open 400m times, it’s certain she will run faster over hurdles as well. Since Femke is working on 14 steps for this year, I’m sure she will improve her time, but a full second is a lot in track. Last year she had a great season and didn’t improve her time at all. She is due, but we will see.

@@lasvegas4164 I do think Femke can gain a second. She somehow did not improve her PR last year due to a lot of bad weather races and the Sydney blitz in the WC. But she was clearly already a lot stronger than the year before. This year she is again clearly stronger, plus the change to 14 step, plus still room for improvement ninths hurdling technique, so a second faster is not that strange.
Where Sydney is at is a bit more difficult to predict because she never runs races. But of course she will be very strong again.

Yes, Ive taken notice and clocked her in 48.86 in last year's WC 400m relay leg.. Clocked Sydney 3 times in 48.7, 48.93 and 49.13. My overall clocking of the 4 X 400 was 3.17.50 just 29 1/100's of a second faster than the official time. Don't know how they clocked Sydney in 47.93. Brittney is the one to beat this year with the fastest outdoor 400m time of 48.99. The fastest 400m runner doesn't necessarily win the 400mh due to hurdle technique which is why Sydney is able to run the hurdles closer to her open 400m time. Sydney also alternates her hurdle legs, too.

Id say shelly/ Lyles were more dominant, shelly did the diamond league circuit + world championships. Excluding that one blip where she lost to Shericka after an injury she dominated every race. 4 races vs 9. She raced Shericka 4 times, Ta Lou 6 times and those are her biggest rivals. Sydney raced Femke once last year, Dalilah once. She only beat them once, I can't say she dominated the entire season. Noah Lyles 8 races, won every single one and ever race sub-20 also won the DL and #3 all time in a much more competitive event. Face his biggest rival Erriyon 5 times. He was dominating too. As a sports fan, the best thing about living outside the US is the consistent exposure to international athletes and a wide range of regional and global sporting events. It gives some perspective to the Sydney hyperbole. Sydney is one athlete only and, as incredible as she is, her very limited number of regular international competitions keeps her in a sort of niche superstar role in a moderately fringe or second-tier global sport. Right now she is a Big Fish in a moderately sized lake. It will be interesting to see what her image management team does moving forward. The world is ripening for the emergence of a transcendent female athlete and icon brand.

No hero or villain could stop him, not even Superman. He has his op infinite mass punch, he can time travel, think infinitely fast, and even vibrate through things/people to take out important life needing organs. Don't get me wrong -- I want to see her do well and am as big a fan as any. But unless I'm wrong, we haven't seen her have the winter and spring that Femke Bol has been enjoying thus far in 2023. 4:55 Usain Bolt 2009 would like a word. Since 1976, her event has dropped roughly 12% and she herself dropped it significantly lower with runners within a few % pts but she she’s still well clear. This suggests there’s still room to go on that record despite it being insanely impressive. There will be athletes that challenge that.
However bolt in one championship meet pushed 2 records that have improved marginally (3% and 1%) since 76 (using % change as it mitigates and issue cross comparing different distances.) also both of Bolt’s performances earned world scores +30% stronger. It wasn’t even just that meet. 400mH it’s more important to win heats of course bc you run less of them. The only races Bolt “lost” were quarters and it happened twice - once en route to his 9.58 haha.
I say all this NOT bc of Sydney. What’s she’s doing for her events are generational. I just feel like we were all lucky enough to witness not just a runner of his time that will fondly be remembered as youngsters pass up - but a machine that truly was the outer limits of what is possible for the perfect frame and strength to cover 100 meters. Fun exercise I didn’t know I wanted to go down so badly haha

This is hardly a two woman competition in the 400m this year. Britton Wilson and Marileidy Paulino have been just as impressive this year. Bol's run 49.2 indoors is only marginally faster than Britton's 49.4 in at the NCAA Indoors. The 48.98 Paulino ran last weekend has to make her the favorite until someone puts down a 48.6, which would be an American record. Wilson virtually can't do that while she is doubling in races 30 minutes apart so we won't likely see her best until USATF, and who knows which event she picks. June will tell a lot certainly.

Talking underrated; Femke Bol wasn't even nominated (final 4/5) for Dutch sportswoman of the year...

Whatever the outcome, the 400m and the 400mH are mouth watering events on the women's side. I could wish the timing of the events is more suitable for them to compete in the double.

Did Dalilah Muhammad retire or something? Why wasn't she included either in the hurdles or the open 400? She ran some fast times last year as well

Sometimes other great runners will push you to be even better. I'm sure Sydney will welcome the competition.

16 years old Sydney ran her 4x400 split in 49.5 ! At 17, she ran 400 flat in 50.07 in the rain. She would be 4th at the Worlds with this time. How much can she make today at 23?

Maybe you should wait till Sydney starts competing in 2023 before you make predictions as to who will challenge her
