If you go back and listen, she never says that he's the love of her life, but that's how he always referred to her, even though he never followed through on any of his promises or even acted like she WAS the love of his life. But in her reflection in the aftermath, he's the loss of her life. I swear, every listen, I feel new emotions. Absolutely gut-wrenching!

MH went to her ERAS concert n her mouthed, I love you n she did too. It’s saying I love you repeatedly, then talking rings n cradles, then gone in the morning, wt.. was cruel of him, he drew heart in thinking of a future together.. then abruptly be gone in the morning is cruel! I get why she felt down bad with no convo of knowing, just gone.. you go from hurt to ticked off n hurt! Thanks

@@anoes_br3884 Yes of course! To me, the "dancing phantoms" represent past-Taylor and her muse when they were happy (and doing cute things like dancing on terraces). They're ghosts (aka "phantoms") because what they had between them is now dead, and they're embarrassed of how depressed current Taylor is over the end of the "counterfeit" or fake relationship.

I always thought this was a little about Joe (stand up guy) and Matti (low down boy). Cinephile (Joe) Mr Steal Your Girl (Matti). Both made promises they didn’t keep and strung her along.

Absolutely agree. She mixed up the muses on a lot of the songs. My hot take was the "loss of my life" was really more about her dream of finally having "the one" and starting a family. She was shit talked by both of the guys into thinking they had something with a future, and she felt like she wasted her youth so that dream was out of reach. It ties back to So Long London and the Prophecy.

I think the loss of my life line is referring to the loss of the dream he sold her. Which is why she feels embarrassed that’s she’s mourning something that never really existed.

I took “loss of my life” to mean that with all of the promises he made and things he said she started imagining/planning their future together so when he left she lost this life that she had been planning. There is a quote that by a guy named Søren Kierkegaard that says “The most painful state of being is remembering the future, particularly the one you'll never have.” and that’s what her saying “you’re the loss of my life” makes me think of.
Her voice is melancholy which adds to the song.

I think Taylor is at an age right now where she is feeling her biological clock ticking, she wants to have a family and somebody acting like they want it to but then making fun of that fact behind her back, and then just ghosting her after telling her they could have that, it probably felt like the loss of her life at that time because it wasn't just the dude that she was losing. Like, the dude is one thing but the promise of a lovely life together with a family, that's a whole additional thing to mourn. She was literally losing that life that she'd dreamed about with that person. I really wish people wouldn't pretend to want those things to get what they want from somebody and then just bail when they've gotten it. Its the very definition of cruelty.
It almost sounds like he was "future faking" something narcissistic people do to draw people in and then when you try to hold them to their word they freak out. It's so painful.

Obviously it wasn't working out with Joe, but having a third person in the mix had to have added HUGE stress to the entire situation.
I think it's that realisation at that point that now she needed to really, really start from scratch with someone new, and her time is now finite for having her own biological family.
The more times I listen to the entire double album, the more I hate ratty Matty 😤

This is my favorite song off TTPD, and easily one of my favorites EVER. It’s so hauntingly beautiful, and heartbreaking and so perfect.
Love your reactions. For a woman of a certain age, the timeline to having a baby is often on the brain (“gotta find the right guy, we have to be together for x time before we can try for a baby,” etc.). We don’t want to admit we do it but we do it. To have maybe thought her 6yr relationship would achieve that only to have it fail and then rekindle a relationship with Matty Healy only to have it spectacularly fail - it’s a lot of loss. No partner, no marriage, no babies, no family, just more loneliness. Also, the jalapeño comment!😹🫶🏽

I think the loss is this dream of finally finding your soulmate and have the happily ever after, and then just have that dream ripped away before it becomes anything substantial. It isn't just the relationship that dies, but also all the possibilities that were connected to it and that could have lived on if they never tried to realize the relationship.
I try not to speculate too much about her personal life, but the short (although long thought of) relationship comes right after the slow deterioration of her longest relationship and I would think that kind of compounds the pain. "Are they second-hand embarassed that I can't get out of bed 'cause something counterfeit's dead" is one of the hardest lines I have ever listened to from her, I sometimes get teary-eyed just thinking about it. Ugh.

Glad to see that I’m not the only one with this thought process. The only word linking to Joe is cinephile, but Matty definitely is one too (see the black and white esthetic of videoclips and the artwork of The 1975).
I’ve listened to this song once since it was released, bc the new album came out after week after my breakup lol but this was the perfect way to revisit the song. Her poetry and lyricism is so good in this one 🖤

Never before, and ever since” from verse 2. the first time i noticed the switch from never since to ever since, in reference to different feelings, i was in shock and had to fully pause and digest. so subtle, yet so powerful. this song is full of some of taylor’s best writing yet and very underrated imo.

I think it’s about Matty and not Joe. Joe wasn’t the cinephile but Matty was. We also know that he also “shit talked” her during an interview that got printed. They spoke for a decade, making plans for a life together and then was finally with her after Joe and he ghosted her. Joe didn’t just disappear, he was lost in his own world that didn’t include Taylor.

this song is abt her previous 6 years long relationship wt joe alwyn (an actor - that's why the "cinephile" mention) and how he spent the whole relationship promising marriage and kids and it never happened

-They moved too fast to all in like " One kiss to getting married." and " a get love quick scheme"
-"We were just kids, babe." Referencing when they were first romanticly linked 10 years ago.
- The cemetery references they shouldn't have tried to make their situationship become a relationship. Especially with moving so fast, they nothing really change.
- "Mr. steal your girl. And make her cry." Hints to the making those promises Joe wouldn't make. But then, not following through. Same with the "something counterfeits dead."
- The coming in and love bombing her before ghosting her. "what a valiant roar. What a bland goodbye."

Joe was the ultimate loss of her life. 6-7 years down the drain after YEARS of promising her a future of marriage of kids.. but his depression was pulling her down, also the fact that he wanted to keep her private when she wants to be out there literally expressing her love and life. But she gave him all her youth.. she would have left earlier if she wasn’t so willing to believe him through his counterfeit love.
The fact that this guy she is singing about wrote songs about her. Contacted her and emailed her over a ten year span. And then once he had her, treated her badly and then ghosted her would make anyone spiral. Especially, since she finally got out of her old not working relationship to be with him. He really played the long con there. I would never trust anyone again.
