This song is heartbreaking because he sings “You never gave a warning sign” and she responds with “I gave so many signs.” It just shows that they have had miscommunication for so long that she just had to leave and move on.
They have two more songs together, Evermore from Taylor’s evermore album. They also worked together on Renegade a song from a project with Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) and Aaron Dessner. Aaron has produced all their songs together. Similarly, she has two songs with The Nationals, Aaron Dessner’s band. Coney Island on Taylor’s Evermore and The Alcott (aka one of my favorites ever) from The Nationals’ album. Happy discovery!
They sound so amazing together but their voices ALMOST clash - it's almost a perfect disharmony, which is perfection for this song. Once again. Genius.
Hi guys, Taylor wrote the song with William Bowery (Joe, her ex), and Justin Vernon wrote the bridge. She talks about it before the music starts. You should watch the Long Pond sessions special because she explains the writing process, and I'm sure you'll like it 🙂
This song was actually written by her and and her then boyfriend Joe Alwyn, they're both massive Bon Iver fans and they got Aaron to ask if Justin would want to be featured, he wrote the bridge to the song and then sent it to them and it was added to the song. So the song was technically written by all 3 but in an "individual way".
Taylor said that her and joes favorite things were sad songs so I think that’s why they made so many together and also why in You’re Losing Me she says “how long could we be a sad song till we were too far gone to bring back to life”
Yes, Taylor explained that this is 2 ex lovers meeting when the woman is with her new lover (first verse), and they start talking about their different opinions of the breakup ( to him it was out of the blue and as she says I gave you many chances and many signs that this was not working), and as the song progresses they are no longer listening to eachother and screaming. Him singing harder/ almost overpowering her in some parts and her lighter is intentional in the song, showing their dynamic in their relationship and their miscommunication.. Taylor and her ex wrote he song and she then asked Justin to feature on it and sent it to him, and he then added a bridge.
In the documentary part Taylor said she was nervous to ask him to feature because it would suck if he said no, she was really excited for the opportunity to work with him! I think her wide taste in music impacts what she does in really interesting ways.
You should try the Long Pond Studio version of “This Is Me Trying” but make sure to watch the video where she explains the meaning of the song before she actually sings it!
When Bon Iver does that whoo-hooo thing towards the beginning (sorry- don’t know what it’s called either…😉) it’s haunting because it resembles a lonely animal howling but is still clearly a human voice, so it sounds primal, visceral and beautiful all at once.
@@TAHBofficial it's called a falsetto or a head voice I'm pretty sure, but I'm not versed in western music terms to this level (Indian reporting again lol) so I mayyyy be wrong.
Since you guys really liked this song with them together, they have another song with Bon Iver on it as a feature called evermore from her album evermore. Just as beautiful and could most definitely hit you right in your c-spot
This song is GORGEOUS but the part that gets me every time is “never gave the warning signs” “I gave SO many signs, so many signs, so many times.. didn’t even see the signs” 💔😭
Love this song, glad you guys do too! Thought it was just me ;) You can almost see my house out Justin V's studio window, I'm a huge fan of him and Bon Iver. Justin's voice makes this song, but credit Taylor for her wonderful voice and contributions/collaboration. Lyrics are incredible. Makes you feel! That's what music is supposed to do, and this did. I'm a fan of Taylor now too ;) Swiftie I think they call it! Then they start playing Bon Iver songs when I shop at the grocery store and visit recreation centers here in Eau Claire, played on radio stations and recognized throughout the country? They made it!
I absolutely love this song, and you should listen for the live at the eras tour. The entire stadium sings the duet with Taylor. It is one of the coolest song in concert!
Thank you for pronouncing Bon Iver right lol. I always love your Taylor reactions; it's so fun to watch 3 grown men be so affected by Taylor songs. It truly warms my brittle little heart. So I'm still (un)patiently waiting for you to do Don't Blame Me from the Reputation Tour...
Taylor has another song with a feature that is set up like this-the last time ft. Gary Lightbody on her Red album-where it’s not like a typical feature song and more of a collaborative piece between the two of them. I highly recommend you guys listen to it
My FAVORITE Folklore song...and definitely close to being in my top 10 Taylor songs. It is so good...love when Taylor duets with a male. Evermore and The last time are also favs of mine!
You guys really should watch the long pond sessions in full, you'd love it. Before each song she explains the writing process and and what each song is about. After she wrote this she was nervous to send it to him but he liked it and here we are
Yes def a C spot song! Elated that you guys reacted to this!!! Here’s the lore. Her then boyfriend under the pseudonym William Bowery actually wrote the first verse and music for it. Taylor overheard him playing it and she fell in love with it and wrote the rest with Bon Iver. She hinted to Aaron who is on the piano and one of the Folklore producers, that she hoped Bon Iver would be interested in collab-ing. Aaron having a close friendship with Bon Iver given their bandmates, made it happen. Bon Iver wrote the bridge “so step right out, there is no amount of crying I can do for you” verse. And a trifecta of poetic brilliance was created. Thanks again guys. Always love your reactions. ❤
What I can’t believe is that they recorded the two halves of this like a thousand miles apart. Like… “exile” sounds like it’s knit together by angels or something, and they weren’t even in the same room. Just…how? Anyway, everybody else offered backstory already, so I’ll let that sit, but I totally understand not watching her little interviews since you wanna go in blind and make your own interpretations. I don’t think you should have to watch interviews to understand a song; how it resonates with you is what matters, y’know? Anyway, loved the reaction. Thanks for sharing!
Joe sang the entire 1st verse while with tayler exactly as it is now. She asked Joe if they could write the rest of the song and theyre both huge fans of Bon iver. Justin who is the singer from the group Bon iver created the bridge after it was sent to him and it's a masterpiece!
Voice teacher here, hi! I think the words you may be looking for to describe Bon Iver have to do with vocal TONE which has lots of gorgeous GRIT and GRAVEL. 😊 Enjoyed this reaction very much, thanks!
This live performance and My Tears Ricochet from the Long Pond Sessions are my absolute favorite Taylor performances, up there with Out of the Woods on tour, and All To Well at the Grammy’s, and I’m constantly looking for reactions to those performances so thank you lol♥️
The relationship you all have with one another is pretty amazing. I don't have a sibling or a cousin I'm this close with. Love seeing the connection the three of you share. And love seeing that connection come out as you discuss Taylor's music! Thanks for great videos.
So Taylor wrote this song and sent it to Bon Iver to see if he would sing it with her. He included the “woo hoo” part from the beginning which adds so much.
As many have noted in the comments here, this is one of my favorite songs. It seems unique to me because rather than hearing about the breakup, it's as though you are witnessing the breakup through their "conversation." Thanks so much for your reactions!
Taylor's boyfriend Joe Alwyn plays the piano, very well. Taylor heard Joe playing the first verse, and singing part of the opening lyrics that he wrote. She loved it, especially with a man's voice going first. It's as if they are having a conversation while singing their frustration at not being heard by each other, as they sing this sad goodbye. Taylor and Joe, finished writing the song, with Justin Vernon contributed the lyrics, "So step right out, there is no amount Of crying I can do for you..." Taylor talked about it in the Long Pond intro to this song. Exile, is my #2 Favorite Taylor Swift song... All Too Well [10 min] is my #1.
Taylors songs with bon iver: Exile, Evermore, and his song renegade with big red machine featured taylor. He also did backing vocals on her song marjorie (& its suspected a few others from evermore album)
once again an awesome reaction. Y'all are my favorite. If you want to see something that will shock you get the Live Taylor Swift video for We are never ever getting back together (Rock Version). Yes Rock version and she crushes it. Electric guitar and all. It is incredible
Your commentary about Exile was insightful, spot on, and held my attention until the end of the reaction video. On another note, I noticed the rapport among the three of you is reminiscent of what makes the Kelce brothers' podcast so successful -- just a little calmer, not so over the top. That easy ebb and flow is organic and can't be manufactured which leaves me surprised your subscriptions aren't, at a minimum, in the six figures. I look forward to future reaction videos from 2.5 brothers.
Such a brilliantly produced song that just tells such a heartbreaking picture story on your minds eye. Bravo!! I’m so happy you saw the unique brilliance in each other. YES!! Make an album together!!
I love her first line: "I see you staring, honey, like he's just your understudy, like you'd get your knuckles bloody for me." It illustrates so much story with just one lyric.
This was a fantastic reaction, thank you, guys! Your chemistry is off the charts. It would be great if you had the time to react to all Long Pond songs, you're amazing people reacting to amazing content. Thanks again!
What i s amazing is that they were in two different locatio ns and this was during the pandemic. He wore a kerchief because there was a person there I think, to set up the csmera and sounds..
i was just wondering when yall would swing back to ts. great great sad sad song. the demise of a relationship perfectly explained from both sides. well written well performed
Taylor and Joe Alwyn wrote this song together during the early months of the lock down. She collaborated with Aaron Dessner for the first time on this album. She really wanted Justin Vernon of Bon Iver to sing with her but didn't know him. She idolizes him. He is friends with Aaron who pitched it to him. He ended up writing the bridge. So it was quite a collaboration between all of them.
I want to let you know that when I need cheering up I turn on one of your reactions. I enjoy listening to three men who clearly along with one another for the most part from slightly different perspectives who come together to give their reaction to something that can sometimes be pretty emotional. I don't think the collective "we" are wanting you to cry. It's just so rare as a woman to see men react to something that is written from a female perspective and have that aha moment where it's like wow, that's something I hadn't thought about before or wow that's something I want to be aware of in terms of educating my daughter in the future. So thank you.❤
absolutely loved this one!! can't wait for you to react to some of the other 'c spot hitting songs' 😂 you'll love champagne problems, right where you left me, this is me trying, tolerate it
This song and video makes you feel like you are watching a real couple still madly in love and you start cheering for them to figure out their communication.
we didn't know we needed this until we got this collab they must have felt this too, so they made another collab for the song Evermore from the Evermore album 🤎 and she gave so many signs, man
A few of Taylor's songs she has a feature sing the first verse and then she comes in, I've noticed mostly when the features are guys. It's that way in The Last Time, as well. That's also a great sad song. I think it's maybe because the song is supposed to be the couple speaking to each other, so it's just whoever "started" the conversation.
I love Folklore album and glad you guys are reacting to songs off this album; I love Exile! But I also love August, Mirrorball, The 1; But would love for your reactions to more of her Reputation or Midnights albums. Midnights: Maroon, You’re on your own,Kid
Taylor and her ex, Joe, wrote it together. She presented the lyrics to Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Justin said that he would never say that in this kind of a relationship fallout. He changed some of the lyrics to be more accurate to what he would say and this is the magic that came out. Makes you wonder what the original lyrics were.
Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) received the unfinished song and he wrote the amazing bridge for this, which occurs twice. He sent the bridge back to Taylor Swift and she was amazed by it and the rest is history. I’m assuming by giving him the first verse, she’s allowing the female to respond, which I understand. Also, giving him the first first may simply be in deference to Justin Vernon, who she REALLY respects
exile is from folklore, but taylor teams up again w bon iver on folklore’s sister album evermore. the song is called evermore and it’s equally amazing!
they have another song together!! evermore, it’s the closing track on her follow up album to folklore, i highly recommend! if you want another long pond song, i’d suggest “the last great american dynasty” for lighthearted or “seven” for c spot lol
have you all seen the surprise song version of this? unfortunately bon iver wasn’t there for it but the crowd sang those parts and it was also a beautiful rendition
i'm obssessed with your taylor reactions. if you loved this you should also react to evermore from taylor's evermore album and renegade from big red machine. both songs as basically taylor and bon iver throwing lyrics at each other!
I just started watching your channel yesterday and I got to say I love everything your saying so far. But you guys should watch the entire folklore long pond sessions recordings. You may find Jake hits his c-spot multiple times. ☺️ Plus Taylor, Jack and Aaron also explain each song before singing them.
So many hear this song and say "see he didn't see the signs!" when "signs" and games are NOT the same thing as communication and actually voicing your concerns and issues.
you guys keep wondering and I don't want to be that person but I'm like... even if it's at the end (so you can figure the song out yourselves) please watch the intro/explanation. taylor talks about loving bon iver and how her co-producer got them in touch, and how she never thought he'd want to collaborate with her, and how he heard the song and was immediately inspired and came back with aspects of the bridge.😅
This song is heartbreaking because he sings “You never gave a warning sign” and she responds with “I gave so many signs.” It just shows that they have had miscommunication for so long that she just had to leave and move on.
They didn't. She did. You can't give "signs". You have to speak up.
@@orphanedhanyou Unless you’re in that situation then you don’t really understand.
@@orphanedhanyoumaybe she did give signs and he just didn’t see them and it could feel like he doesn’t even care about your signs
They performed this live together at a Bon Iver gig in London. The crowd lost their minds when Taylor came out. It’s on TH-cam- you react to it!
Taylor wrote it with him in mind but she was too afraid to ask him. Finally, she sent the song to him. He sent it back with the bridge added to it.
Coney Island on Taylor’s Evermore and The Alcott (aka one of my favorites ever) from The Nationals’ album.

this is in my opinion one of taylor’s best songs and definitely her best duet ever! so heartbreaking and beautiful! ❤️

Hi guys, Taylor wrote the song with William Bowery (Joe, her ex), and Justin Vernon wrote the bridge. She talks about it before the music starts. You should watch the Long Pond sessions special because she explains the writing process, and I'm sure you'll like it 🙂
It's still on Disney.
Watch the discussions about the songs. My daughter and I have watched a zillion times. ❤😊

Great content.
Justin Vernon. Not Bob iver. Bon Iver is a band lol
Long Pond Sessions documentary is a MUST MUST MUST. You will gain even more respect for Taylor when you hear about the writing process.

exile is from folklore, but taylor teams up again w bon iver on folklore’s sister album evermore. the song is called evermore and it’s equally amazing!
they have another song together!! evermore, it’s the closing track on her follow up album to folklore, i highly recommend!
if you want another long pond song, i’d suggest “the last great american dynasty” for lighthearted or “seven” for c spot lol
have you all seen the surprise song version of this? unfortunately bon iver wasn’t there for it but the crowd sang those parts and it was also a beautiful rendition
yay! we finally got jake to cry!!!
i'm obssessed with your taylor reactions. if you loved this you should also react to evermore from taylor's evermore album and renegade from big red machine. both songs as basically taylor and bon iver throwing lyrics at each other!
This is the song that made my hubby be open to listening to other tswift songs. It played at the end of YOU season 3 I think
I just started watching your channel yesterday and I got to say I love everything your saying so far. But you guys should watch the entire folklore long pond sessions recordings. You may find Jake hits his c-spot multiple times. ☺️ Plus Taylor, Jack and Aaron also explain each song before singing them.
So many hear this song and say "see he didn't see the signs!" when "signs" and games are NOT the same thing as communication and actually voicing your concerns and issues.
you guys keep wondering and I don't want to be that person but I'm like... even if it's at the end (so you can figure the song out yourselves) please watch the intro/explanation. taylor talks about loving bon iver and how her co-producer got them in touch, and how she never thought he'd want to collaborate with her, and how he heard the song and was immediately inspired and came back with aspects of the bridge.😅
i think you guys would love The Last Time ft. Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. it has a similar vibe to this one, and is one of my favorites!
This song is gorgeous 💜
Please do more long pond session with her talking about each song and their meaning!
