    Though Hideo Kojima's MGSV has been out since 2015, many of its secrets remain hiding in plain sight. In this video, Jorin explains an unexpected yet vital 'missing link' concealed behind the drapery in THE PHANTOM PAIN: how the antagonist Skull Face comes to haunt the entire series, via the cipher of Eli, aka Liquid Snake. Along the way, we also discuss the concept of memes in the Dawkinsian sense, how Skull Face and Liquid are parallel characters, and how MGSV uses them to explore concepts like race, fate, and more!
    *********
    Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a third-person action-adventure game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on September 1, 2015.
    The tenth and final main installment of the Metal Gear series, Phantom Pain follows legendary mercenary Big Boss (now known by his codename "Venom Snake") as he awakens in 1984 from a nine-year coma following the destruction of his private military company "Militaires Sans Frontières". With help from his old business partner Kazuhira Miller and rival-turned-ally Revolver Ocelot, Snake must rebuild his mercenary army (now called "Diamond Dogs") while plotting revenge against the shadowy organization "Cipher," as well as its XOF paramilitary unit led by the enigmatic Skull Face.
    Similar to its standalone prologue Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain focuses on executing mission objectives in open world environments set in both Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the Angola-Zaire border region of central Africa, complete with dynamic weather and day-night systems. Stealth is a major component of gameplay, but often optional thanks to Snake's arsenal of combat gear. Players can also upgrade Diamond Dogs' new "Mother Base" in a fashion similar to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, allowing them to develop new weapons and items. In addition to its single-player campaign, the game includes two player-vs-player multiplayer modes, as well as optional microtransactions and other paid downloadable content.
    The Phantom Pain is notable as the final game in the series with involvement from series creator Hideo Kojima and his Kojima Productions team. Several months before the game's release, Konami began a major restructuring of its games division, ultimately leading to Kojima Productions being treated more as a contractor rather than an internal studio. Unlike prior Metal Gear titles from the same team, Kojima Productions' logo and branding is absent from promotional materials and packaging for the final game. After leaving Konami, Kojima would go on to establish a new independent studio with the same name in 2015.
    The Phantom Pain was bundled together with Ground Zeroes and all DLC as Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience in late 2016 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Phantom Pain's gameplay and graphics engine were later reused for the 2018 survival-focused spin-off title Metal Gear Survive.

      @@mist12345678910 The living through the arm thing is real though. When Liquid takes over Ocelot in MGS2 that's actually happening in the lore of the game. Ocelot removed liquids arm from his body and replaced it with a robotic arm for that very reason. Because of the possessions though, it gave him the IDEA of self-hypnosis as a convenient cover, using double think in order to covertly realize the will of the Boss by pulling the wool over Snake's eyes by occluding his true goal.
      People forget that Metal Gear as a series is, and always has been, a "magical realist" setting. Magical realism is a literary genre defined by oxford as "stories that have, typically, a strong narrative drive, in which the recognizably realistic mingles with the unexpected and the inexplicable, and in which elements of dream, fairy story, or mythology combine with the everyday, often in a mosaic or kaleidoscopic pattern of refraction and recurrence."
      Some other great examples of Magic Realist narrative are the novels "Midnight's Children" by Salamon Rushdie, "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Grabiel Garcia Marqeuz, and the novellas "The Trial" and "The Metamorphosis" by German novelist Franz Kafka.

    I remember first playing this and hating that they changed snakes voice because i was like he doesn't even sound like snake. Then by the end i realized that it wasn't even the snake or big boss i thought i was the whole time and it made so much sense haha. Especially since they kept everyone else's voice actor the same or at least something that sounded like their younger version.

    I will die on the hill that the possession we see on the Tanker and perhaps even on Arsenal Gear WAS genuine. Otherwise, why would Ocelot replace the grafted arm with a prosthetic between 2 and 4? He figured the guise of Liquid could actually be used to his advantage, but only if Ocelot had control, thus he ditched the arm and switched to hypnotherapy.

    • @homelessgenie3366
      @homelessgenie3366 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it was genuine until Kojima decided hypnotherapy was more convenient.

    • @2yoyoyo1Unplugged
      @2yoyoyo1Unplugged ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@homelessgenie3366 If you REALLY knew your lore you'd know that both explanations are true, and that your cynical take on Kojima seems to come from a place of bad faith. I am not speaking theory. The Tanker possession is backed up by OFFICIAL sources, and there is no evidence to suggest that specifically was ever retconned, whereas there IS evidence that the arm was replaced post 2 and it IS confirmed that he used hypnotherapy to maintain the guise.

    Oh my goodness I thought I finished this game! Apparently not, I remember sneaking into the castle at the end and the metal gear coming back to mother base then I thought it was game over and it was just the multiplayer mode left 😅 whole bunch of cutscenes I’ve never seen, thanks, pretty much watched all your MGS vids! Amazing.

      There's a bunch of cut content cos MGSV was rushed and only about 70% finished when it got released, also why Kojima got mad and left. Konami were too money hungry.

    • @sweetvillasis11

      @@herbdelarge8784 Kojima blew threw MGSV's budget on a lot of unnecessary additions, and that's why Konami forced him to release it early.

      I think everyone forgets, Ocelot faked hypnosis in MGS2 so why wouldn’t he here? I feel like MGSV was the first game to omit “the truth” about Ocelot’s role in post credits. I’d also love to see a game that shows more about Liquid Snake and Ocelot. Especially this union of two characters-how and why Ocelot chose to fake possession. Liquids SAS and FOXHOUND days are still widely a mystery.

    I’m hoping that Konami don’t mess this remake up. I’m not convinced they won’t but one can hope.
    Even if they do mess it up we’ll always have the original vision of snake eater. A brilliant game.

    I have a question for you. In order to make these analysis, what did you study and for how long? I'm talking about references from philosophy, politics, books, etc. I wish to be able to make this type of analysis for myself with other types of media. But I have no idea where to start. Maybe sharing your creative process is not something you wish to do, but it would be highly appreciated. Amazing video btw 👍🏻

    Mantis is supposed to have some sort of visual cue to identify who's controlling him right? Like he has the horn for Venom, the Beret for Eli, the fire for Volgin, etc.. Why doesn't he have some visual cue for the few seconds he's controlled by Shabani? Someone should mod the game so he does. I propose that for that cutscene alone he appears with an afro, just like Shabani has. For lore purposes of course.
