I think what is more impressive is that the lower-end SKU AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile 5-Series chips are outperforming a lot of the Intel competition at almost 1/2 the price of competing chips from Intel that come under the "Core i7" series.
AMD have done amazingly well with the Zen 2 microarchitecture and the TSMC 7nm Node. These new Ryzen 4000 mobile chips are absolute bargains and frankly I fail to see any reason to buy an Intel-based performance laptop when AMD are so far ahead and their CPU's run noticeably cooler, they somehow even manage to get more performance out of lower tier dedicated GPU's (See the AMD Ryzen 4900HS + RTX2060 equipped laptops VS the Intel i9-9880H + RTX2080 equipped laptops)

I'd just build a tiny mini-ITX machine and carry a portable monitor with that if I needed the power. For convenience on-the-road use, I'd just buy a cheap APU-based (no dGPU) notebook, so I don't feel too bad if I end up beating it up.

This is where 14nm really falls short. Sure on desktop you can add more cores, up the clockspeed and jack the power usage up to ridiculous margins to get the performance up to the competition.
But once youre power limited that 7nm efficiency will make it impossible to match with a 14nm cpu

    • @herobrinecyberdemon8104
      @herobrinecyberdemon8104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You can't put more cores forever whether on mobile, desktop or server with a larger node, not to even mention the size and yield limitations of monolithic dyes (renoir is monolithic as up to 8 cores it works good). For example, Xeon 8000 is up to 28 cores MAX. They can't put more on a single dye, so that's why shittel has made Xeon 9000 with two 28 core dyes and 350W TFP at base clocks (it's basicly over 400W). And why this is important is because it sits on intel's site as the best "datacenter" CPU, beating 225W 64 core EPYC in AVX-512 they specially put on it. And the benchmark was kinda off too, having disabled SMT on the EPYC (but that's intel and nobody bothers preventing this from happening).
If software used all the Zen cores you have intel would be done last year. But we are always limited by software.

AMD doesn't just offer better value. It's on top performance and efficiency wise. The 4800H beats the i9 in most tests despite using almost half power. 3950X, Threadripper, Epyc... Intel is just desperately clinging to the one thing it has, gaming. And even that is debatable. The 3300X is on par with the i3 processors, the 3600 competes with the 10400.. as for the other processors, you need a $1200 graphics card just for 5% better frames at 1080p. Is it just a marketing thing that consumers not in the know will think ryzen = better for price/performance than raw performance (in reality, it's better at both rn lol) and won't purchase? If true I wish companies would give consumers more credit, anyone can find a few benchmarks.

The Ryzen 4000 series would be best seller in 2020. Half the price of the Intel flagship laptops yet give you good value and performance. Only several people would buy that insane price.

A 10 core i9 in a laptop would've been madness. They put 8c16t into an i7, wish they add in 2 more cores into the i9. But i guess thermals would go crazy.

If (cpu)productivity is the main focus, just go with the XMG Apex 15 with the R9 3950X🙌🏻

it's pretty good since of smartshift. allowed a 1660ti level gpu to perform like a 2060, so probably one of the best options right now

I really need a professional laptop as an electrical engineer to do simulations. I was thinking XPS 17 with i7 8 core CPUs. All theses AMD vs intel videos are making me wary of buying intel CPU based laptop this year though... But I can't wait I need a laptop by July. Do you think XPS 17 with 10875H i7 8 cores and GTX 2060 maxQ is good buy right now for 2200 USD?

I bought the Zephyrus G15 (I wanted the second NVMe slot) and overall I am very impressed, it's not hot while doing basic tasks and blows me away when I want to game. I can get 75 FPS in mostly high settings for AC Odyssey. I use my desktop for gaming and my laptop primarily for basic tasks and keeping me distracted while I update old computers and clean them up for family members. It took my Grandma's PC 3 hours to update Windows, so l played a lot of games.
Overall Ryzen is perfectly fine for me, it's a powerful laptop for a cheap price considering it's an 8 core and I can rely on it for anything. Before I primarily relied on my desktop for everything, that's not portable though. My desktop is a Ryzen 3800X, RTX 2080, and 32GB DDR4 3600 CL14, so it's nice to have a small powerful laptop to use on the go.

Why is Jarrod tied up in ths corner?

I guess the OEM's weren't really convinced of AMD's performance claims and thus paired them with less performant GPUs. Though it is probably also partially the customer behavior. But it would be interesting to see what a Ryzen paired with a top-end GPU in a laptop would be able to do.

i have 650 watts psu i added an rx 5700 mech oc , the problem is my gpu isnt always using 100% its always below 50% 60% 70% note that cpu usage is always lower than 60% in all games so i dont think its a bottleneck problem plz help me am losing my mind here

    • @bananya6020

might be a ram or storage bottleneck, or you might have capped your fps. just trust your senses and logic-- if it isn't the cpu and not the gpu that is bottlenecking, what are other parts of my pc that may bottleneck it?
