I'm afraid I don't understand Farid's response, though. Does the Qur'an not refer to the Scriptures the Christians and Jews had with them at the time as authoratitive? That is, it refers to them as accurate in the present (at the time) tense? We have copies of those Scriptures, and they match the ones from both before and after the time of Mohammed - did I somehow miss when Farid explained that they are not affirming currently (at the time, which matches both earlier and later manuscripts) available Scripture?

And they will suffer a painful punishment. 5. 4:44 Have you 'O Prophet' not seen those who were given a portion of the Scriptures yet trade it for misguidance and wish to see you deviate from the "Right' Path? 6. 4:46 Some Jews take words out of context and say, “We listen and we disobey,” “Hear! May you never hear,” and “Râ’ina!” [Herd us!]-playing with words and discrediting the faith. Had they said ˹courteously˺, “We hear and obey,” “Listen to us,” and “Unẓurna,” [Tend to us!] it would have been better for them and more proper. Allah has condemned them for their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few. 7. 6:91 And they have not shown Allah His proper reverence when they said, "Allah has revealed nothing to any human being." Say, "0 Prophet," "Who then revealed the Book brought forth by Moses as a light and guidance for people, which you split into separate sheets-revealing some and hiding much? You have been taught through this Quran' what neither you nor your forefathers knew. 8. 3:78 There are some among them who distort the Book with their tongues to make you think this 'distortion' is from the Book-but it is not what the Book says. They say, "It is from Allah"-but it is not from Allah. And 'so' they attribute lies to Allah knowingly. 9. 5:15 0 People of the Book! Now Our Messenger has come to you, revealing much of what you have hidden of the Scriptures and disregarding much. There certainly has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book 10. 62:5 The example of those who were entrusted with 'observing' the Torah but failed to do so, is that of a donkey carrying books. How evil is the example of those who reject Allah's signs! For Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. 11. 5:13 But for breaking their covenant We condemned them and hardened their hearts. They distorted the words of the Scripture and neglected a portion of what they had been commanded to uphold. You ˹O Prophet˺ will always find deceit on their part, except for a few. But pardon them and bear with them. Indeed, Allah loves the good-doers. 12. 5:41 O Messenger! Do not grieve for those who race to disbelieve-those who say, “We believe” with their tongues, but their hearts are in disbelief. Nor those among the Jews who eagerly listen to lies, attentive to those who are too arrogant to come to you. They distort the Scripture, taking rulings out of context, then say, “If this is the ruling you get ˹from Muḥammad˺, accept it. If not, beware!” Whoever Allah allows to be deluded, you can never be of any help to them against Allah. It is not Allah’s Will to purify their hearts. For them is, disgrace in this world, and they will suffer a tremendous punishment in the Hereafter. 13. 7:162 But the wrongdoers among them changed the words they were commanded to say. So We sent down a punishment from the heavens upon them for their wrongdoing. 14. 3:187 ˹Remember, O Prophet,˺ when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture to make it known to people and not hide it, yet they cast it behind their backs and traded it for a fleeting gain. QURAN & SCRIPTURES OF 7TH CENTURY ARABIA: The Quran was not addressing the biblical scripture available today. The Quran addressed the oral and scriptural traditions of the Jewish and Christian tribes and clans inhabiting the 7th Century Arabian Peninsula which included Mandaeans, Manichaeans, Collyridians, various Gnostic sects, Trinitarians, Rabbinical Jewish sects as well as the idol worshippers. These traditions differed widely from the canonical texts accepted into Christianity and Judaism. These religions and their texts were in a state of flux. The differences became more acute as interpretations steeped in Western hellenism were imposed on these Middle Eastern scriptures, which were already imbued with hellenism due to more than 900 years of occupation by the Seleucids, the Ptolemies and the Romans. Add to this the prior influence of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians and the Persians, the Biblical texts are filled with 'foreign' cultural and linguistic influence, both from the ANE and the West. That is why these texts are so interesting to explore. The Quran has preserved the oral and written traditions of 7th Century Arabian Christians and Jews. This preservation sheds light on the religious traditions that had not yet come under the influence of Rabbinic and Roman attempts at orthodoxy. It is absolutely amazing how the Quran addresses the issues of the Christian and Jewish tribes from their own perspective, so as not to offend members of these sects, but have them focus on the monotheism presented in their own texts. The Quran is amazing!!! It is the prime example of how to approach religious beliefs from an understanding and tolerant point of view. Quran 16:125 says: " Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knows best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. SOME 7th CENTURY CHRISTIAN DOCTRINES ADDRESSED IN THE QURAN: The beliefs of these sects in 7th Century Arabia are referenced in the Quran as the Mandaean name for John the Baptist which was Yahia Yahona (Yahya in the Quran) and the Manichaean Docetic doctrine which states that Jesus was a spirit and not flesh and blood. The Quran addresses this issue in Quran 3:59: Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allāh1 is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was." So, Jesus is like Adam, in other words, they were both flesh and blood human beings. Another doctrine is the trinitarian doctrine which addressed in Quran 4:171: "O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs." Mandaean doctrine is addressed in Quran 2:138: (As for) Sibghah Allah which Sibghah can be better than Allah's? And we are His worshippers." Sibghah is a Mandaean ritual in which the believer is immersed 3 times in flowing water, like a river. The Mandaeans, known as Subghah in Iraq, were known for this ritual. In this verse, Allah is referring to immersion in Islam, the religion of Allah rather than the watery Mandaean ritual. Collyridians were Mary worshippers. This worship is addressed in 5:116: And [beware the Day] when Allāh will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allāh?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen."
@Johnonymous: Heretics??? According to who, the Roman Church??? The multitude of 7th Century Christians who did not subscribe to the Church of Rome condemned the church 'canonized gospels' as well as their 'ecclesiastical' doctrines as heretical. The Quran does not condemn these Christians as heretics and future denizens of hell as did the Roman Church. The Quran presents these various Christians doctrines as deviations from the primacy of the core biblical belief expressed in the first of the ten commandments that ALLAH IS ONE. According to Quran 9:31: "They take their rabbis and their monks for their masters apart from Allah, and also the Messiah, son of Mary, whereas they were commanded to worship none but the One True God. There is no god but He. Exalted be He above those whom they associate with Him in His Divinity." In other words, the Quran presents a commonly held Abrahamic belief in the oneness of God and then presents church doctrines as contradictions to this belief.

Isaiah 54:10 says: Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of Shalom/Islam be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Ezekiel 34:25 says: “I will make a covenant of Shalom/Islam with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.” Ezekiel 37:26 sats: “I will make a covenant of Shalom/Islam with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them forever.” The covenant promised to Aaron, that of a perpetual priesthood which would abide in peace, and the covenant given to David, that a patrilineal descendant of David would reign in peace forever from Jerusalem, were to be fulfilled in Jesus. According to Jesus’ genealogy in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, Jesus’ father, Joseph, was a descendant of David and Jesus’ mother, Mary, was a descendant of Aaron (Luke 1:36). However, the Jews refused to follow Jesus, so the final covenant of Islam was transferred to Bani Ishmael when Muhammad was appointed as Allah’s Prophet. According to the Quran 61:16: Jesus foretold Muhammad as ‘the Praised One’: “And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is the Praised One (Ahmad in Arabic).” But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, “This is obvious magic.” Jesus foretold of Ahmad/Muhammad when he quoted to the Jews Psalm 118: 26 in Matt 23:39 & Luke 13:35: “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time comes when ye shall say, “The Praised One (Ahmad/Muhammad in Arabic) is he that comes in the name of the Lord.” In other words, the Mosaic and Davidic covenants which the Messiah was to fulfill, would be cancelled and the covenant of Islam would be transferred to the Praised One (Ahmad/Muhammad) who came ‘in the name of’ God or Allah. Luke 13:35 confirms Matthew 21:43 in which Jesus says that the kingdom of God would be taken from the Jews and given to another nation. “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.” So, the houses of Aaron (the priesthood) and David (kingdom of Judah) remained desolate and expelled from Jerusalem until Omar ibn Khattab restored the Christian expelled Jews to Jerusalem in 637 CE.

Those who follow the Messenger (Mohammed), the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them (7:157 MP). And when there cometh unto them (Jews) a Scripture (the Qur'an) from Allah, confirming that in their possession (2:89 MP).
What is more likely, that Hisham ibn Sa'd fabricated the "odd" part of the hadith where Mohammed placed the Torah on a cushion and said, "I believe in you and in the one who revealed you", or that other hadith transmitters dropped the "odd" part because it showed Mohammed praising the Torah? Ibn Hajr, one of the hadith critics who pushes back against the report was already aware that some were using the report in favor of the Torah. He says, "... Some used this hadith as an indication to show that the Torah that the Jews presented, at that time, to the prophet was all sound and correct and not being altered." This shows that Muslims were aware of the implication of such a report from Hisham ibn Sa'd! And that there was an incentive to suppress it. But this is totally against Farid's claim that the classical Muslim scholars who reported minute details, did not hold/share the different position that the Torah was uncorrupted. Ibn Hajr says otherwise! He is full aware that others held that the Torah "was all sound and corrected and not being altered". And he is pushing back against the opinion in his Fath-al-Bari. Now, don't dare count on Farid to tell you that other scholars deemed Hisham Ibn Sa'd reliable. Ibn Kathir reports and comments on this hadith. That will be too much to ask.
@@letmetalk2240 It a version available to the Jews. One that your prophet approved. All that matters is that in the 7th century, Jews possessed a version of the Torah which your prophet said he believed in. Note that your prophet never said, "I believe in the original version of you". He just said I believe in thee. Besides, why is he placing a "corrupt" Torah on a cushion? Didn't he know that others would use his words to show that the Torah was not corrupt?
@@IbnSalama-ok2os >>>Besides, why is he placing a "corrupt" Torah on a cushion? ==================================== I did not say it was a corrupt Torah that was put on the cushion. For argument sake, if the Torah was truly intact, my question is which version of the Torah? Can you be certain that the version of the Torah was still in use today?
@@letmetalk2240 If there was an intact Torah in the 7th century, with the Jews of Mohammed's time, then that is all David needs for the first leg of his dilemma (i.e., that the Quran affirms the inspiration, reliability, and authority of the Torah!) All he needs for the second leg of the dilemma, is to show that the Quran contradicts the Torah. But that's the easy part. Muslims, Jews, Christians and atheists all agree that the Quran contradicts the Torah. Therefore, the Quran contradicts scriptures that it affirms. You see the problem?? The only way out of the dilemma is to claim that the Torah was already corrupt before the time of Mohammed. And that is why Farid is keen to reject the hadith where Mohammed places a copy of the Torah on the cushion because he recognizes the problem with Mohammed affirming the Torah at that time. We have copies of Torah that are older than Christianity and Islam! The Dead Sea Scrolls are more than 2000 years old, and they say that the Jews are sons and daughters of God (Deuteronomy 32:19). Every "version" of the Torah says the Jews are the Children of God. Hebrew versions, Greek versions, Syriac versions, and even Samaritan versions! But the Quran denies that Jews are the children of God. Again, do you see the problem??
@@IbnSalama-ok2os So you cannot provide a definite answer which version of the Torah placed on the cushion still available today. Why? It is because there are many versions of Torah. From the Muslim perspective, Prophet Muhammad SAW did not acknowledge the physical Torah he placed on the cushion. Rather, he referred to the Torah revealed to Prophet Musa AS (Moses). Why did he place it on the cushion? As it was someone's holy book, he respected it. Interesting facts:- 1. The KJV Old Testament was translated from the Masoretic Hebrew text. The Masoretic text manuscripts which are completed 400 years later after Prophet Muhammad SAW. 2. Google How Old Is the Oldest Torah? The scroll contains the full text of the five Books of Moses in Hebrew and is kosher.

You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, 'It is from Allah,' to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!"

That's a very simple question!
@@kenid4144
David made the argument that the earliest Islamic scholars said that we must affirm the Bible yet even the companions of Muhammad (SAW) say the opposite.
And if you want verses from the Qur'an to support that, here they are:
1. 2:75 Do you believers still' expect them to be true to you, though a group of them would hear the word of Allah then knowingly corrupt it after understanding it?
2. 2:79 So woe to those who distort the Scripture with their own hands then say, "This is from Allah"-seeking a fleeting gain! So woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they have earned.
3. 2:159 Those who hide the clear proofs and guidance that We have revealed-after We made it clear for humanity in the Book-will be condemned by Allah and ˹all˺ those who condemn.
4. 2:174 Indeed, those who hide Allah’s revelations, trading them for a fleeting gain consume nothing but fire into their bellies. Allah will neither speak to them on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them.
There certainly has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book
10. 62:5 The example of those who were entrusted with 'observing' the Torah but failed to do so, is that of a donkey carrying books.
What a miserable profit!

THE 5TH & FINAL COVENANT, THE COVENANT OF ISLAM (SHALOM IN HEBREW), IS FOUND IN THE BIBLE: The Biblical covenants are: the Covenant of Noah, the Covenant of Abraham, the Covenant of Moses & Aaron, the Covenant of David and the Covenant of Islam. Islam (Shalom in Hebrew) is the 5th and final covenant that God made with those who obey his laws. This covenant of peace was given to the descendants of Aaron in Numbers 25:12 and the descendants of David in Isaiah and Ezekiel. According to Numbers 25:12: “Behold I give him my covenant of Shalom (Islam in Arabic)”. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them forever.”
The covenant promised to Aaron, that of a perpetual priesthood which would abide in peace, and the covenant given to David, that a patrilineal descendant of David would reign in peace forever from Jerusalem, were to be fulfilled in Jesus.
According to the Quran 61:16: Jesus foretold Muhammad as ‘the Praised One’: “And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is the Praised One (Ahmad in Arabic).” But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, “This is obvious magic.”
Jesus foretold of Ahmad/Muhammad when he quoted to the Jews Psalm 118: 26 in Matt 23:39 & Luke 13:35: “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time comes when ye shall say, “The Praised One (Ahmad/Muhammad in Arabic) is he that comes in the name of the Lord.” In other words, the Mosaic and Davidic covenants which the Messiah was to fulfill, would be cancelled and the covenant of Islam would be transferred to the Praised One (Ahmad/Muhammad) who came ‘in the name of’ God or Allah.

Some used this hadith as an indication to show that the Torah that the Jews presented, at that time, to the prophet was all sound and correct and not being altered."
This shows that Muslims were aware of the implication of such a report from Hisham ibn Sa'd!
Which version of the Torah that was put on the cushion?
This is the question.
====================================
I did not say it was a corrupt Torah that was put on the cushion.
Interesting facts:-
1. The KJV Old Testament was translated from the Masoretic Hebrew text.
The Masoretic text manuscripts which are completed 400 years later after Prophet Muhammad SAW.
2. Google How Old Is the Oldest Torah?
Answer: The Bologna Torah Scroll (also known as the University of Bologna Torah Scroll, circa 1155-1225 CE) is the world's oldest complete extant Torah scroll. The scroll contains the full text of the five Books of Moses in Hebrew and is kosher.

I wish David would stop making fun of your perceived accent. Just an unnecessary ad hominem in this discussion.
I wouldn't mind if it was a good impression.
