    I guess I'm a movie plebian here, but I was never bothered by the Rocky robot. Rocky got rich fast, he managed his money poorly as demonstrated here, it became an issue in Rocky V and he ended up more or less broke in Rocky Balboa. Seems like a realistic (albeit cliche) path for many athletes.

    • @linkeffect82
      @linkeffect82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I can agree with that about most athletes managing their cash poorly, but there's a dozen other less science fiction ways to show that , with Rocky buying Pauly gold plated belts, a Lamborghini , or other expensive presents rather then buying a robot servant with A.I, that's reprogrammed later to worship it's owner with a sexy voice.
      Critic put it best, that is shark jumping to the max.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Sports people get thrown out just for being suspected of it and yet this guy who they literally came out in the media and stated he was on several of them gets to fight

    • @ChakatStripedfur
      @ChakatStripedfur 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Actually, in Rocky V he went broke because Paulie gambled it all away by making bad investments. Rocky's mistake was not only letting Paulie get anywhere _near_ his fucking money, he made him his accountant. Paulie stole all the money and blew it on the stock market (as well as putting his house and cars up as collateral, thus losing them too), so Rocky had to file for bankruptcy.
      I've always hated Paulie, he just seriously grated on my nerves every second he was on the screen (in any of the films). Not saying his actor was bad, or anything, I'm just saying I hated that character.

    Rocky beats the Super Soviet that killed his best friend in a revenge fight that takes place in the USSR on Christmas Day, forcing him to forfeit his HW Belt for no money by essentially training crossfit and zero sparring.....yet as a child of the 80s, I still absolutely love this movie.
    I probably saw it 5 times at the Highway Cinema...which was the local cinema I went to when I was a kid. Tickets there use to cost only $2 and it had only 2 theaters in it. I miss the good ol' days.

    This is one of the most '80s movies to ever come out of the '80s. Seriously. Robots, '80s rock music, lots of montages, Sylvester Stallone, American patriotism (even if it's odd with that James Brown sequence), anti-Soviet themes, and a message about getting along with each other at the end. That said, I love Rocky IV! It's so fun to watch!

    Btw, after seeing *CREED*, i never looked at Apollo the same again.
    He was already stubbornly manly and awesome before, but knowing he left behind a successor _(That's not as tame as Rocky's kid),_ his character possesses a whole other level of depth.
    *Makes me wish Apollo had a prequel film.*

    • @martyc909
      @martyc909 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      L Kururugi I'd love an Apollo prequel, I just image them really going with the movie version of Ali and protesting the Vietnam War and everything. If they did a prequel, he might become the most in-depth character in the series.

    • @danielclark241
      @danielclark241 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      L Kururugi Creed was good overall, but I just didn't like the prose behind the whole thing.
      "This guy is Apollo's son because Apollo had an affair"
      Why not just have the character be the son that Apollo already had? Oh right, because the character needs to be no older than 30, otherwise, they'd have to have the movie take place a few years (or more) earlier.
      It just reeks of plot convenience to me.

    • @AgentRedgrave
      @AgentRedgrave 7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Actually, making Donnie Apollo's illegitimate son did add some depth to the story. The fact that Donnie didn't always have everything growing up. That he was, presumably, born to a poor mother, who we know he lost as a young boy, and spent time in boys' homes.
      The fact that Donnie feels the need to prove that he's "not a mistake" as he says to Rocky during the end of the film. Think about it, he was born out of wedlock (Which in itself is very common nowadays) from a one night stand of an extramarital affair. Being born from such circumstances can give a guy self esteem issues, it be very easy for him to see himself as nothing but Apollo's "mistake" and unworthy of his name (Which could very well be why he kept the name Johnson, before he finally changed it)
      It also adds to Mary Anne's (Apollo's wife) character. She should have every reason to despise the fact that this kid even exists, and what does she do? She takes him in, and raises him as her own. That right there, is a good woman.

    • @DSan-kl2yc
      @DSan-kl2yc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      L Kururugi how does cheating and being a sbit person make Apollo better? they didn't even focus on it so it didn't add anything. it could have started without that and been exactly the same.
      but it did vaguely affect him. he was successful before being a boxer so I don't know what he had to prove by then.
      but like I said it could.stste why he had emtoional problems. except he didn't have any problems and was even trying to be in a serious relationship and wasn't violent or anything. like he had already gotten over it.
      it's hard to know when it's his personality or some problem from his childhood because again he was successful and already proved it so the boxing thing was just a passion.
      maybe he had a chip on in his shoulder but that frustration is equally justified from just trying to be a boxer

    • @martyc909
      @martyc909 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      D. San it gives Apollo a more realistic depth to him. Many boxers have similar issues. Even modern boxers, Oscar de la Hoya who's famous for having affairs, his son out of one of them is becoming a boxer after having a pretty tough life without his father. Apollo was modeled after Ali, and Ali was famous for his affairs and many marriages. In the series, it makes Rocky into the ideal "white" boxer which America wants to root for, and it re-enforces Apollo as the more "realistic" flawed champion.

    C'mon how could you not love James Brown in this movie?? BTW, the reason Drago had so few lines is because Rocky's previous opponents, Apollo Creed and Clubber Lang were so outspoken and flamboyant, Dolph Lundren thought this opponent should be just the opposite, quiet and stoic.

And yes, sometimes they go over the top, but there are still a lot of reviews with a skits in the beginning or one in the middle and otherwise simply Doug sitting in front of the white wall, reviewing the film.

    The power and emotion in several of its scenes between Apollo dying, the argument on the staircase with Adrian, the reflective car ride, the press conference blowup, the 2 montage scenes and Rocky winning and delivering his speech, these things make me forgive so many of the obvious flaws Nostalgia Critic alludes to. • @loneronin6813
    @loneronin6813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    An interesting fact: Stallone wanted the fight between Rocky and Drago to look as real as possible. In order to accomplish this, he told Lundgren to punch him full-force. This lead to Lundgren punching Stallone once in the chest so hard that they had to rush Stallone to a hospital. When they treated his injury, they thought he was in a car crash where he had collided with a mac truck!
    The thing is, Lundgren is a Kyokushin Karate black belt. (I don't know to what degree.) For those who are unaware, Kyokushin is a full-contact, bare knuckle style of Karate developed by a man named Masutatsu Oyama, who was nicknamed, "The God Hand," due to his own martial prowess. His approach to martial arts was all about testing your limits in order to be as brutally effective as possible.
    He was even quoted as saying that in order to win a fight one must, "Fight like a demon." So you can understand how someone trained to do exactly that on top of being at peak physical fitness and being as tall and muscular as Lundgren is could cause some serious damage.
    I also have to give credit to Stallone for his absolute mad-lad level of bravery for not only taking that kind of punch, but to recover and be willing to keep things going, although thankfully he didn't continue to insist on the scene being THAT realistic.
    Also, you would be hard-pressed to find a man so sturdy that they would survive such a devastating blow, both figuratively and literally! I have immense respect for both Stallone and Lundgren for all they have achieved in their lives and how insanely resilient they are in both body and mind.
    I felt the need to share this because thankfully it had a happy ending and it's too fascinating of a story that it just has to be brought to more peoples' attention at any given opportunity lol

    I'm sure I will get a lot of criticism for saying this, but I actually like most of the elements in Rocky V and I think it's a decent movie. I like how they showed that Rocky's role as a trainer/coach to Tommy Gunn causes a rift between him and his son. I know a lot of people hate the street fight at the end, but I thought it was a good setting to illustrate that while he isn't in the ring, he is still a champion.
    I also love a scene towards the beginning where Rocky is standing in Micky's old gym and something Micky once told him echoes in his mind. It was a great tribute moment to remember the character's importance as well as showing great reverence and respect for Burgess Meredith as an actor and as an influential role in the films. When I first saw the movie, especially that part, the words, "Micky loves 'ya," nearly put me in tears.
    It may not be the best of the films, but it has some great moments and all in all, it's an ok movie and while I see it as perhaps the worst of the Rocky movies, it's not a bad film in my eyes.

    They weren't the established Mr. T and Hulk Hogan we know today when Rocky fought them. They were still unkown to the general public at the time of the movie

    Critic: "I'm with Drago, here, this is some weird-ass shit."
    Drago: "Um, I don't know what you guys normally do, but in Russia, we just punch one another."

    Yeah but Rocky IV was more than just a movie back then, like TopGun It was a movie that puts the US above the USSR.

      I really have to rewatch 80s movies. I once told my father that the 60s were the most anti-Communist Hollywood got, and he said that wasn't actually the case, the 80s were. And looking back, he actually seems to be right: Top Gun, Rocky IV, Rambo III, Red Dawn.

    The directors cut is definitely an improvement. Especially for getting rid of the robot, giving Drago more depth, making Apollo actually land punches, and not making the Russians cartoonishly evil.

    What I always liked about the fourth one was how it took inspiration from Bobby Fischer and Dan Gable's respective competitions against russians ranging from the vast amount of suspicion towards locals to the local crowd eventually cheered him on, albeit to different extremes but still

    Thing about the robot scene is, nowadays, you actually CAN buy robots just like that.

  • @BayandurPogosyan

    Actually the robot has a name, Sico, and it was designed to help autistic children learn and was used successfully to help Stallone's younger son. So Stallone used the opportunity to show Sico as a part of family life and promote robot-assisted therapy for autistic children. It was weird and attention-grabbing, but well, maybe it was always supposed to be.
    So maybe it wasn't good for the movie, but it was a very sweet and effective promotion by old Sly. And I do believe it deserves some respect.

    One of the things I love about the rocky universe is that James Brown technically witnessed Apollo Creed getting murdered by Drago.

      2007-2010 was classic area with best reviews 2011 was good but not as funny but it did give us the best TGWTG com movie. 2012 was a little less funny what shit to boldly flee . 2013 while less funny he did had good views on movies 2014-2017 I found them funny when I was younger now that I'm older most of the review are extremely cringe and we do not speak of 2018-present

      He said he liked it and was very good entertainment. That still doesn't change how stupid and over the top it is. Being a bad movie doesn't mean it can't be good entertainment.
