The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a 2004 American live-action/animated adventure comedy film based on the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, and is the first film in the SpongeBob SquarePants film series. The film was directed, co-written, and produced by series creator Stephen Hillenburg, with live-action sequences directed by Mark Osborne. Age has nothing to do with the movie's message outside the characters in the film underestimating Spongebob and Patrick. All the movie is telling is just to believe in yourself.

Personal story: I auditioned for a stage production of A Charlie Brown Christmas. The audition required us to use a monologue from a children’s show or movie. I used the Goofy Goober speech for my audition and went all in on it. Everyone laughed their heads off and soon after that, I was cast as Pig Pen. And that’s the story of how SpongeBob got me my first paid gig.
I did the same thing as a wizard of Oz production!! I recited the part where spongebob thought he won manager. It landed me the spot of lollipop munchkin. This would have been a couple years after the movie came out

What I like the most about this movie is that when SpongeBob and Patrick head to Shell City and everything gets gloomier, yet they're still acting like kids.
When Patrick looks around the car at the skulls and bones on the ground, freaks out, and yells to SpongeBob to ask him for chocolate ice cream hahahah
To this day, I still can't get over how emotional the scene with SpongeBob and Patrick drying up to death was. It was so heartbreaking and tragic to watch, and yet it was executed so beautifully, that I could not look away even when I had so many tears in my eyes.
my brother made fun of me for crying during that scene as a kid lmao. But looking back yea it made sense why i would cry. Two of the happiest characters in fiction facing death is unexpected and sad.

The ONLY Spongebob movie for me. I love how it’s a classic hero’s journey with plenty of humor and heart. I first watched it when I was 12.

I love this collab because unlike most NC collabs where it's usually the guest who has to adjust to the Critic's style like Todd, Lindsay, or Brad; here, it's the Critic who adjusts to Strider's style.
I think that's mainly because whenever they've collabed in the past, it's usually been Strider's video on HIS channel.
Another Fun Fact from this amazing film that we all love so much is: David Hasselhoff's part was written before the actor was even approached. He readily agreed without reading the script, largely at the behest of his daughters.

Another Fun Fact: The idea for the frog fish to catch SpongeBob and Patrick came from series creator Stephen Hillenburg, who mentioned on the special feature "The Case of Sponge Bob". He explained while the film was being made Stephen went snorkeling in Hawaii and he saw a frog fish hiding behind a yellow sea sponge. And as Stephen watched it he figured he should use this in the movie. Also real frog fish have a thing on their head called a small worm lure to catch their meals. But for the movie they changed it to a sweet old lady selling ice cream sundaes which attracted both SpongeBob and Patrick.
I remember being ten years old, the absolute HEIGHT of Spongebob fame, this was the biggest movie in me and my friends lives. We all had this sense that once the movie was over, there'd be no more Spongebob and a chapter of our childhoods would close forever. I remember just sitting in the theater through all the end credits, something I had never done before, not crying or anything but just kind of like watching the sun set and accepting "Well, adios Spongebob."
And then...well, y'know.
That death scene. Holy shit Nickelodeon had the absolute balls

I've found that younger fans (who didn't grow up during the initial airing of seasons 1-3) tend to view this movie as perfect more often than older fans.
It's unironically my favorite movie of all time.
Another Fun Fact: The ship used for the live-action pirate scenes in the beginning was the 1960 replica of the HMS 'Bounty', a merchant ship used by the British Empire in the late 1700s. The replica ship was sunk in late 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. (In fact, there's a character in the movie and series that is named Sandy)

Spongebob is a comfort show for me. I grew up watching it and now, I'm almost 20 and I still watch it lol. I have the first 3 seasons on dvd and it's my go to show to watch when I'm working on homework. I can literally quote most episodes (and this movie) line by line

Seeing this movie in the theater on my 13th birthday was one of the highlights of my childhood. My friends and I literally cheered during Goofy Goober Rock and that song has been permanently on every music device I've owned since.

My favorite line in the movie:

I don’t know why, but that extra “bar” from that one dude at the end of that phrase always made me laugh, and still does.
I just re-watched that scene, and only just realized that the guy who said that extra "bar" only did so because he started saying the line a half second later than everyone else.
I think the joke is that the guy is drunk and thus is slurring his speech.
Another Fun Fact: Patchy the Pirate from the series was originally going to be featured in the theater segments. However, he was quickly scrapped and replaced with the pirate crew when Paramount executives took issue with Patchy's schtick as the host of a cheap kids' show, as anything cheap-looking, even if done intentionally as a parody, made them feel uncomfortable. The pirate's parrot, however, still has the same voice as Patchy's parrot, Potty.
Gotta hand it to Doug, he held out as long as he could when it came to reviewing this film.

I think it was because like many adults since he didn’t grow up with SpongeBob to him it probably looked like a show that was gonna be a dumb waste of time, which I think most likely steered him away from it much like it does for a lot of adults, it’s a show you really have to give a chance and then you’ll see the greatness that lies under the hood

"Australian episode of Bob's Burgers" is truly a hidden gem of a quote
I was never too into SpongeBob and I always thought the movie was ok even at a young age, but because a lot of my friends praised and made jokes about it even to this day, I do appreciate what it tried to do for the fans who did grow up with it. Not to mention I’ve grown to admire Stephen Hillenburg’s choice to see his vision of how the show would end his way. (even if it’s still continuing and even if he briefly came back for a little while. Rest in peace, Stephen Hillenburg.)
I grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants with my dad. I still remember when we saw this together in theaters, I really have a soft spot for this movie.

This is by far the greatest movie based on a TV show ever. The epic story, iconic characters, and banger songs, are all just amazing. And I love the message that it's okay to let your inner kid out sometimes. This is how the franchise should have ended.

I saw this movie in theaters on a school field trip, when I was just starting to watch SpongeBob. This was one of the best theatre going experiences in my childhood.

I was a HUGE SpongeBob fan during its golden years. I had a whole shelf of SpongeBob stuff, and I was ecstatic about seeing the movie. My mom took me and my little brother to see it on opening day, and it it was a memorable experience. I also got the watch that Burger King gave out to promote the movie.
The video game is lot of fun to play, and it serves as an unofficial sequel to the original Battle for Bikini Bottom game. Dennis' design on the level where you fight him on Hasselhoff was his original design before it was changed to what it is in the movie. Plus, the game is the only place where it has the movie's concept art. One of them has SpongeBob sending Patrick away after they have gotten mustaches with an ice cream cone on the ground. I'd like to think there was a deleted plot element where SpongeBob catches Patrick eating an ice cream cone, which angers him since it's not a manly thing to do, so he tells Patrick to leave which makes Patrick sad.
I've been going on and on, so the last thing I'll say is that the soundtrack is lit!
I actually DO see this movie as a masterpiece. Not many movies put being childish or immature in a very positive light. Also, I like how Squidward finally starts giving a shit once Plankton starts taking over, only to be given the bucket treatment.
By the way, this movie came out on my birthday, and I even got the OST CD, which included songs from THE FLAMING LIPS AND MOTORHEAD. Also, it's theorized that the ice cream IS alcoholic because the bar section of the Goofy Goober is empty and dim, implying that it's a place for "adults" only.

It's not the first time. They've done several collabs together in the past. I can't say I was expecting Phantomstrider to collab with the Nostalgia Critic for a review of The Spongebob Movie, but I also feel like I should have expected it as an inevitability, too. ;)
Just gonna say it. This is a childhood classic and favourite of mine. I watched it for the first time in fifth grade. I’m now a senior. It never fails to make me laugh hysterically.

Originally, SpongeBob was supposed to end after their film. But Nickelodeon continued the series after the great success it had with their ratings and plus, it would’ve been devastating for it to end so abruptly.
This was probably the best collaboration I have seen from the nostalgia critic. And Phantomstrider is a fantastic TH-camr that I wish gets even more recognition!
I remember when I rewatched this movie at college. When Spongebob and Patrick came back the crowd cheered. It was great.
Seeing this movie in theaters was one of the best days of my life. Also, the preview for Avatar: the Last Airbender was attached to this film, so that makes it even more important. Also, still shocking that Scarlett voiced Mindy

It warms my heart seeing this movie get talked about in such a (sort of) sincere way, and I agree with the closing statement Critic and PhantomStrider had. It's no masterpiece, but it's more than just a simple comfort movie, and it holds up after all these years

Another Fun Fact: While Sandy has a very minor role in the final version of the film, she originally was a tad more prominent. During SponeBob's morning routine at the beginning, he was meant to go to Sandy's tree dome and find it abandoned. He remembers that Sandy returned to the surface, making him sad for a moment. Then, towards then end of the film, after SpongeBob and Patrick escape Shell City, they were to meet Sandy who appears as a real life squirrel, which disgusts Patrick so much he vomits repeatedly. Sandy agrees to help them return to Bikini Bottom, though she is busy with her own adventure and being chased by a group of men in black suits. While she helps them escape to the beach, they'd run past human versions of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward. Apparently, this scene was cut due to Nickelodeon taking issue with the joke of Sandy being a fugitive on the run from the government and was also due to Patrick vomiting being shown on camera.

Happy Birthday Malcolm. Also, this video was a true nostalgia trip for me. I took my kids to see it when it came out. I have to admit, I was impressed.
This Movie has such a special place in my heart. When I was a kid, I begged my Mom to take me to the theater to watch it, we came late and only saw the last 30 minutes. When the DVD was announced that was the only thing I asked my parents for that year. I watched the movie countless times and loved it, and I even still have the same DVD to this day.

This movie just hits differently for people that grew up during that time period. I remember we would pull the TV into the classroom and all huddle up to watch it whenever it was raining or snowing too hard during recess or lunch. It just has a special place in my heart that makes me tear up, especially that scene of Spongebob and Patrick drying up.
It's always fun when Phantom and Doug collab. You both have good chemistry.

I'm not a fan of Doug as a person but Phantom I can respect. He actually acts chill and respects people even if they disagree with him

According to the creator, Stephen Hillenberg, this was supposed to be the finale of the series. What I really hope the show does in its final season is lead up to the first movie with the building at the Krusty Krab 2.

Just watched the full review. Growing up I absolutely was obsessed with SpongeBob so being a 4 year old around Christmas time getting to see this movie followed by my first snow (doesn't snow here much) and getting a DS for Christmas... Amazing childhood memories

I remember this being a big deal when I was a kid and I honestly still enjoy this movie as an adult. It still makes me laugh and I really like rewatching it to see how many scenes are still used as memes today.
The fact that the movie will always be the actual ending of the show, is such a cool and comforting thing to know

Technically, it’s never actually been officially confirmed as the ending of the show. One writer even came out on Twitter a couple years ago and said no, it’s not the ending because SpongeBob literally has no continuity, so no episode (even if the show ends) nor movie is actually “the end.” That said, a lot of fans consider it the official ending, just because Hillenburg wasn’t planning on anything else after this while writing it.
This review aged like fava beans and a nice chianti.
I definitely saw this in theaters back in 2004, I was the right age and loved SpongeBob. Ill always love this movie and I hope you cover the other SpongeBob movies and more Nickelodeon movies.

Wonderful memories of watching this and the show with my family. My mom took my sister and I to see this opening weekend. The scene where SpongeBob and Patrick dry out, I was squeezing my mothers arm trying not to cry.
I still remember being 7 years old and watching it in the theater. I was a massive spongebob fan as a kid.
I’d love to see more crossovers from the Nostalgic Man.

Really enjoy this crossover! You guys made a great team together with this review. The first SpongeBob movie is one of my favorites when it comes to films based on a cartoon, and I still enjoy many of the songs and memes it came from it!

It implies that Mrs. Puff is an alcoholic that doesn't come into work on Mondays, since alcoholics tend to drink all weekend, then spend Monday recovering from a hangover.

Never saw this in theaters but I was definitely at the right age to know how big this movie was. Even back then SpongeBob was huge, it was really hard to find a single person who didn't know who he was. This movie could've been a proper send off for him, but I guess that's what happens when you're too big. Plus, this film came out during what many consider the apex of Nickelodeon programming.

Was always hoping you get to this movie Doug. I remember growing up with this film, and I still look back fondly on it and it still holds up imo. Easily peak and best that Spongebob has to offer for me personally. Nothing against the other films, which I haven't seen/rewatched, but even then, I would probablys till consider this the best of the three. It's well animated, funny, and just honestly does what a movie based on a show like this needs to do. Just give you what you love but on a grander scale and having fun while doing it. Nothing more to say, it's honestly one of Spongebobs best works for me. Love it to death. Thank you to you and Strider for going over and giving this film some love.
